Carl A. Shedlock

OSWEGO — Carl A. Shedlock, 82, of Oswego, formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Wilson Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born in Ehrenfeld, Pa., son of the late John and Margaret Lowman Shedlock.

He was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1976. He lived in Oneonta for 50 years before moving to Oswego in July of 2001.

He was a former Communicant of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta and presently a Communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Oswego.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. Captured after being shot down over the Alps on Feb. 22, 1944, he was a prisoner of war for 18 months. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Presidential Medal and Ex-POW Medal.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy M. Kehoe Shedlock of Oswego; four daughters, Marilyn Petkov of Freeville, Margaret Sands of  Washington, D.C., Dorothy J. Shedlock and Patricia Shnen, both of Oswego; three sons, Carl Shedlock of Boco Raton, Fla., Thomas Shedlock of Walingford, Pa., and Robert Shedlock of Clark's Summit, Pa.; three brothers, Joseph Shedlock of Medusa, Robert Shedlock of Spain and Thomas Pypeman of Burbank,  Calif.; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

Burial will be Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held in Oswego at a time to be announced.

Arrangements are by the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, Oswego.

Judy Westfall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Judy Westfall's passage from this earth into eternal rest came on Oct. 22, 2001.

She was born Julia Arlene Dutcher on Jan. 4, 1928, to John and Agnes Dutcher in Pepacton. She graduated from Milford High School in Milford, N.Y., in 1945.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Ralph Westfall; their five children, Bette (Ray) Seymour of Florida, Karen (Jud) Lobdell of Michigan, Jimmy (Kathy) Westfall of New York, Terry (Mike) Andreis of North Carolina, and Aggie Watson, formerly from Missouri; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; as well as her sister, Louise Dutcher of Milford; and two brothers, Rod (Winnie) Dutcher of Otego and Jim (Gwen) Dutcher of Milford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private memorial was held at her home with immediate family attending.

Her final resting place will be Slide Mountain, as she requested.

"There is an open gate at the end of the road, through which each must go alone. And there, in the light we cannot see, our Father claims His own. Beyond the gate your loved one finds happiness and rest, and there is comfort in the thought that a loving God know best."

Joseph Jay  White

ONEONTA — Joseph Jay  White, 44, went to be with Jesus on Nov. 3, 2001.

Joe was a wonderful friend to so many. He devoted his life to helping others, serving as a pastor, social worker, guidance counselor, husband and dad.

His sense of humor kept all of us laughing and lit up any room he was in. He was like a dad to all the kids who filled the house, and he loved them. Joe loved God deeply and blessed us with his faith.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Nichols)  White; three daughters at home, Sarah, Kirsten and Emily; his mother, Irene  White of East Meredith; his brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Debby  White of South Kortright; his sister, Laura Lee Peterson of Ivoryton, Conn.; his mother and father-in-law, Howard and Alice Nichols of Bloomville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gwen and Paul Deysenroth of Bloomville and Maria and Peter Deysenroth of Cooperstown; nine nephews, Devin, Dusty, Dana, Paul, Daniel, Dennis, Kyle, Kelvin and Erik; and his beloved Auntie Anne and Uncle Fred next door.

There will be a celebration of Joe's life at the South Kortright Community Church this morning, Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Karen Porto officiating. All are welcome.

A committal service and burial will follow at the East Meredith Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Connell, Dow, & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Enrico Blasetti

ONEONTA — Enrico Blasetti, 86, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born March 26, 1915, in Berwick, Pa., the son of Serafino and Saveria (Romiti) Blasetti. He married Anna Giardino on Oct. 25, 1941, in Carbondale, Pa.

Rico retired as a track foreman with the D&H Railroad in 1978, where he worked for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Italian American Club and Council 4989, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Blasetti of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Louis and Cheryl Blasetti of Oneonta, Fred and Lorraine Blasetti of Granada Hills,  Calif., Mary Ann and Ron Gleason of Chatham, and Joya and Charles Glad of Lady Lake, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, Carmen Blasetti and his wife, Lois, of Oneonta, Fred Blasetti of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Irene Starkweather of Albany; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother, Anna Primiani, Mary Ferguson and Pete Blasetti.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Tuesday Nov. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Adrien E. Bundy

NEW LISBON — Adrien E. Bundy, 84, of New Lisbon, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Nov. 24, 1916, in New Berlin, the son of William and Flora (Knox) Bundy.

He was married to Dorothy Kennedy. She predeceased him in 1983.

Adrien was a dairy farmer operating on Bundy Road.

He was a member of the Wharton Valley Grange, the Garrattsville Fire Department and a lifetime member of Eastern Milk Producers.

Adrien was devoted to his family and farm.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, William and Donna Bundy, John Bundy and Lynn Alsheimer, Jim and Marilyn Bundy; his grandchildren, Lisa, Keith, Tom, Nathan and Katrina Bundy; his brother, Carl Bundy; and sister, Florence Card.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at noon at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Lorraine Zimmerman officiating. Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to noon before the service.

Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adrien's memory to the Garrattsville Fire Department.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Russell C. Dowie

ANDES — Russell C. Dowie, 76, of Tremperskill Road, Andes, passed away Nov. 2, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born May 5, 1925, in Andes, the son of Andrew and Mildred (Clark) Dowie.

He married Freda Slade on Dec. 17, 1946, in Fleischmanns.

He was a dairy farmer and also was shop foreman for the state Department of Transportation, working at the Delhi substation.

He was a lifelong Andes resident and a member of the Tremperskill Rod & Gun Club.

Russell was a special man and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Freda Dowie of Andes; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made in memory of Russell C. Dowie to the American Cancer Society.

Carl A. Shedlock

OSWEGO — Carl A. Shedlock, 82, of Oswego, formerly of Oneonta, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Wilson Hospital, Binghamton.

Donald Richardson

COOPERSTOWN — Donald L. Richardson, 72, of Locust Lane in Cooperstown, died Friday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2001, at his home.

He was born on June 13, 1929, in Dobbs Ferry, the only child of the Hon. Lester J. Richardson and Frances (Tolles) Richardson.

A graduate of Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, N.J., Don went on to receive a master's degree.

He then moved to  Texas, where he trained to become a Presbyterian minister. Upon moving to Chicago, he became head of the city of Chicago's Welfare-to-Work jobs training program, a position in which he negotiated contracts with many individuals, including Jesse Jackson, who, at that time, was director of Operation PUSH.

Don then became an assistant in Gov. James "Big Jim" Thompson's office, where he dealt with Social Services in the state of Illinois.

In 1992, Don moved to Cooperstown, where he quickly became an integral part of the community. He was an active and devoted daily communicant at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

He served as a lay Eucharistic minister, a lector and as coordinator of the volunteer Eucharistic ministers, who bring Communion to the sick and homebound. A member of the Faith Enrichment Committee, he also served Communion every Tuesday at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

In 1996, he became a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties and served as president of the board from 1997 through 1999. He was the motivating force in bringing the Catholic Charities Golf Classic to the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown and served on this committee in 2000 and 2001.

Don was also the head of volunteers for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, where he served as a counselor to dialysis patients. A member of the Cooperstown Ecumenical Counsel of Churches, he coordinated the CROP Walk each year. A very busy and dedicated man, Don enjoyed spending time gardening.

Don is survived by several distant cousins and his very good friend, Joe Walker of Scotia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating, Fr. Andrew W. Cryans, concelebrant, and the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, retired Presbyterian minister, of Oneonta, assisting.

Burial will be private and at a later date in the Springfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Tuesday evening, Nov. 6, 2001, from 7 to 9.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd Street, Suite 1100, New York, NY 10016 or CROP, care of Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Sidney Swiphas

EARLVILLE — Sidney Swiphas, 99, of East Main Street, passed away on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2001, in Valley View Nursing Home, Norwich.

He was born on April 11, 1902, in Pittston, Pa., son of the late William and Teckla Levisky Swiphas.

Mr. Swiphas was raised and educated in Brooklyn.

For many years, he was a self-employed painter and decorator.

On July 5, 1943, he married Bessie Sponburgh in Erie, Pa. They resided in Richfield Springs until the 1950s when they moved to Earlville.

Surviving besides his wife of 58 years, Bessie; are one stepson, Donald Mason of Earlville; a brother, Andrew Swiphas of LaPeer, Mich.; and two sisters, Ann Swiphas and Teckla Swiphas, both of Sherburne.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Swiphas in 1907, William Swiphas in 1917 and Joseph Swiphas in 1982.

A graveside memorial service will be held in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at a later time to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to the Earlville Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Dorothy A. Carley

MILFORD — Mrs. Dorothy A. Carley, 79, of Milford, passed away on Nov. 1, 2001, at The Meadows, Cooperstown, where she had resided for several years.

Mrs. Carley is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Thomas Seward of Milford; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley, officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home.

Franz Duhacek

EAST SYRACUSE — Franz Duhacek, 82, of East Syracuse, and formerly of the towns of Columbus and New Berlin, passed away Nov. 4, 2001, at home in East Syracuse.

He was born April 12, 1919, in Tvarnik, Yugoslavia, the son of Mathias and Magdalena (Mettler) Duhacek.

He married Magdalena  Schmidt on Nov. 10, 1941. She survives.

He spent his childhood in Tvarnik, Yugoslavia. He moved to the United States in 1951.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of the St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, and St. Matthew's Church, East Syracuse.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Jenkins, East Syracuse; one granddaughter, Laura Jenkins, East Syracuse; one sister, Magdalena Hunger of Brazil; one brother, Mathias Duhacek of Germany; and three nieces and two nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Fr. Francis Case of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Central New York, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088-6148.
