Virginia G. Cole

UNADILLA — Virginia G. Cole, 79, of Unadilla, N.Y., went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney, N.Y.

She was born July 27, 1922, in Grand Gorge, N.Y., the daughter of Oscar and Helen (Clum) Bevins.

She was first married to Norris Georgia, who died in March of 1961. In November of 1962, she was married to Rowland Cole Sr. Mr. Cole passed away in March of 1988.

Mrs. Cole was a life long Unadilla resident and a former member of the American Legion Joyce-Bell Post #578 Auxiliary and the Fellowship Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Gary and Valarie Georgia of San Antonio,  Texas; a daughter and her husband, Dale and Larry Kinne of Hamilton, N.Y.; four stepsons, Rowland Jr. and his fiancé , Shirley Reynolds, of Sidney, Richard Cole of Unadilla, Donald and his wife, Jancy Cole, of Unadilla; also 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a stepdaughter Anne Paterson in 1989 and her sister, Genevieve O'dell, in 1991.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main Street, Unadilla, N.Y., with the Rev. Brian R. Cutting, pastor of the Unadilla Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, N.Y. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Unadilla Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, N.Y.

John P. O'Hara

NORTHPORT, L.I. — John P. O'Hara, 65, a native of Oneonta, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001.

He was a retired physical education teacher and coach for the Harborfields School District.

He was a loving father and friend.

Calling hours at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, will be Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 9 to 10 a.m. A funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the family plot at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

In Jack's memory, his children Kerry, Tracy, and Brian request that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163.

Margaret Herring

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Margaret C. Herring, 76, of Cooperstown and formerly of Coatbridge, Scotland, died Friday morning, Nov. 16, 2001, at her daughter's home in Utica.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1925, in Coatbridge, Scotland, the daughter of James and Jeannie Smith.

She married Julian Herring on Aug. 8, 1945, in Coatbridge, Scotland. She came over to the states in April of 1946 as a World War II bride. They were happily married for 56 years.

She was a graduate of Coatbridge High School.

She is survived by her husband, Julian, of Cooperstown and daughter, Heather Herring of Utica; her sister, Elizabeth Wallace and husband, James Wallace, of Linlithgow, Scotland; niece, Jeanette Cairns and her husband, James, of Linlithgow and their three children; brother-in-law, Lawrence Herring and wife, Pat, and their two children; and great nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brother, James Smith, and niece, Patty Ann Herring.

Friends are asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Oneida/Madison County Hospice.

The family thanks all of the doctors and nurses at Bassett Hospital for all they did during her short fight against cancer.

There will be no calling hours.

She will be buried at the Crown Hill Memorial Park in Clinton, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Gladys M. Hurd

NEW IPSWICH, N.H.— Gladys M. Hurd, 90, formerly of Unadilla, died at her daughter's home on Ashburnham Road on Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

Born in New York City, N.Y., on Dec. 20, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Otto F. and Dorothea (LaFrentz) Loeb.

She had lived in New Ipswich for the past seven years, moving there from Unadilla, N.Y.

She had been a cost accountant for Berginfield Bank of Berginfield, N.J., for many years and later she and her late husband were the owners of the Wind Song Farm in Unadilla, N.Y., for 17 years.

She was the widow of Newell P. Hurd, who died in 1992.

Members of her family include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce N. Hurd, of Mount Upton, N.Y., and Alan G. and Pamela Hurd of Sidney, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Lynne E. Gore of New Ipswich; a brother, William O. Loeb of Toms River, N.J.; a sister, Edith E. deKeyzer of Wilson, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, New Ipswich.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Souhegan Home & Hospice Care, 24 N. River Rd., Milford, NH 03055.

The Nelson Funeral Home, 32 Maple St., Wilton, N.H., is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Knapp

ONEONTA — Mrs. Dorothy M. Knapp, 92, of Oneonta, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 19, 1909, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harvey K. and Florence (Leonard) Murdock.

She married Louis L. Knapp Sr. on May 4, 1931, in Portlandville. Mr. Knapp predeceased her on April 12, 1968.

Dorothy lived her entire life in Oneonta.

She attended the Crouse Irving Nursing School in Syracuse.

For 22 years she worked at Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney, as an inspector of electrical components, retiring in January 1973.

Dorothy had a truck garden of fresh fruits and vegetables that she grew.

She loved to sew, knit and crochet. But most of all she loved to travel. She even had the pleasure of visiting England. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Marion Dargan of Mount Vision, Lillian and Robert Milke of Ontario, N.Y., Shirley and Douglas Bennett of Milford and Karen Knapp of Guilderland Center; five sons and daughters-in-law, Louis L. Knapp Jr. of Oneonta, Fred and Patricia Knapp of Walton, Alden and Mary Knapp of Oneonta, Robert Knapp of Oneonta and Glenn and Darleen Knapp of Oneonta; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by a daughter, Helen Button of Harpursville; two sisters, Sarah Sjolin and Ruth Field; and two brothers, Howard Murdock and Willard Murdock.

Private graveside services will be held at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Emmons United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, after 3 p.m. The family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Commission for the Blind, 52  Washington Ave., Rensselaer, NY 12144 in loving memory of Dorothy M. Knapp.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

David O'Hara

CAZENOVIA — David Patrick O'Hara, 54, of 1666 Grassy Lane Road, Cazenovia, died suddenly Nov. 16, 2001, of a heart attack.

Born in Sidney, Mr. O'Hara had lived in Cazenovia for 24 years.

He attained his bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of Southern California in 1971, and earned his juris doctorate from the University of California at Davis in 1974. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1974. Mr. O'Hara was the principal attorney for O'Hara & Hanlon, LLP, in Cazenovia.

He served as both village and town attorney for Cazenovia. He was in-house counsel for Coyne Textiles in Syracuse. He was a member of the Onondaga County and New York State Bar Associations. He was a recipient of the Bar Register of Pre-eminent Lawyers for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Mr. O'Hara was a communicant of St. James Church in Cazenovia.

He served in the National Guard.

Fishing the streams in and around Cazenovia was a real pleasure for David. He loved to spend time hunting and hiking in the woods, especially where he grew up in Otego.

David is survived by his wife of 31 years, the former Virginia Emmons; his daughter, Heather O'Hara of Cazenovia; his sons, Sean and Ryan, both of Cazenovia; his sisters, Karen O'Hara of Liverpool, and Sharon O'Hara-Nelson of Naples, Fla.; his brothers, Michael of Oneonta, Dennis of Otego and Kevin of Bainbridge; his parents, Andy and Rita O'Hara of Otego; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the St. James Church in Cazenovia, with the Rev. Peter Worn as celebrant.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the Tait Funeral Home Inc., 2333 Fenner Road, Cazenovia.

Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in Cazenovia.

Contributions may be made to Otego Fire Department.

The Tait Funeral Home Inc. in Cazenovia handled the arrangements.

William Layman

BLOOMVILLE — William Layman, 71, of Bloomville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Albany V.A. Hospital.

He was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Bloomville, the son of Floyd and Margaret (Haffley) Layman.

He was married to Mary Smith in 1953, who was dearly loved by everyone in the community, and who predeceased him in 1984.

Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving four years in Germany in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW Post 270 in Walton, with Bert A. Welch.

He was a very devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Bloomville.

He worked as a professional chef at the Boy's School in South Kortright and for the State University College at Oneonta, prior to his military service which rendered him disabled.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Geurnsey) Layman, who he married on Feb. 2, 1985; two stepsons, Keith Geurnsey of New Port Richey, Fla., and Thomas Geurnsey of Whitesboro; and also two brothers, Jim Haffley of Rome, and Robert (Bob) Griffen of Bloomville.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, among whom are William (Bill) Smith of Hobart and Larry Dornburgh of Pleasant Brook.

Bill was predeceased by a sister, Leah Layman Sackett, and a brother, Richard Layman.

Friends may call Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street) in Stamford, between 5 and 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the United Methodist Church of Bloomville at 2 p.m. with Pastor Stephen Kim officiating. Interment will follow at the Bloomville Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Howard E. Cutting

SIDNEY — Howard E. Cutting, 81, of 1136 Bundy Hollow Road, Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, Nov. 17, 2001, at Out Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

Howard was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Masonville, the son of the late Harry and E. Hazel Cutting.

On April 20, 1941, he married Marie Knapp in Deposit.

He was a self-employed dairy farmer for several years. He later was a caretaker for the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, and a bus driver for BOCES.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Marie K. Cutting, Sidney; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald Cutting, Sidney, and Samuel and Linda Cutting, Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Richard Riesen, Binghamton; one sister, May Gray, Masonville. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Halsey Cutting; and sister, Helen Gray, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call Tuesday until the time of services at 2 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the American Cancer Society if desired.

Franklin S. Davis

HAMDEN — Franklin S. "Frank" Davis, 78, of Hamden, passed away Sunday night, Nov. 18, 2001, at his home.

The son of the late Thomas E. and C. Elizabeth (Norris) Davis, he was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Shavertown, attended Andes High School and married Barbara J. Todd on July 4, 1943. She died May 28, 1997.

A lifelong Delaware County resident, Frank lived at Bagley Brook, DeLancey, for 35 years where he operated his dairy farm and also quarried native stone. Subsequently he was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Hamden, serving as highway superintendent until his retirement in 1986, at which time he moved to Hamden.

Frank was a strong supporter of youth baseball and was an avid fan of that sport.

Surviving are a son, Thomas J.C. (Karen) Davis of Hamden; a daughter, Nancy L. (Thomas) Guido of Auburn; a close friend and companion, Margaret Drew of Andes; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Abner of Fonda, Bernard of Interlachen, Fla., and Maurice Davis of Arkville; two sisters, Dorothy Rice and Carolyn Snyder, both of Interlachen, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Frank Guido; and a brother, F. Eugene Davis.

Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, and where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, by the Rev. Daniel McCollister. Burial will be later in the Shavertown Cemetery.

Contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.
