George Crossman

WEST EXETER — George W. Crossman, 90, of West Exeter, passed away Nov. 22, 2001, at the Folts Home of Herkimer.

He was born June 14, 1911, in Salisbury, the son of Wesley and Eliza Crossman.

He married Blanche Dickenson on June 14, 1932, in West Winfield. She died Dec. 31, 1998.

He spent his childhood in the West Winfield and West Exeter areas.

He is survived by three daughters, Margaret and Gordon Hughes, Shirley and Brad Edwards and Linda and Peter Tophoven; one son, David Crossman; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was a dairy farmer and truck driver.

He was a member of the West Exeter United Methodist Church in West Exeter.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m., with funeral services at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnson-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston with the Rev. C. Adriance, officiating.

Interment will be in West Exeter Cemetery in West Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to the West Exeter Fire Department in West Exeter.

Kenneth C. Hahn

FLY CREEK — The family of Kenneth C. Hahn announces the sudden death of Kenneth Hahn on Nov. 19, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

He owned and operated a machine shop for about 35 years in Farmingdale.

After moving upstate, he and his wife operated Fly Creek Antiques for the last 35 years.

His wife of 58 years, Ellen, survives him; as well as a son, Kenneth, and daughter-in-law, Judy; and a granddaughter, Meredith, and Laura and son-in-law, Bill Hickey of Rochester.

As per his wishes, he was cremated.

There will be no services and those wishing to donate a contribution in his memory may do so to the Fly Creek Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Martin T. Huysman

SIDNEY — Martin T. Huysman, 84, of Sidney, died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

Marty was born July 7, 1917, in Corona, son of the late Martin Dominick and Catherine (Gerrity) Huysman.

He was raised and educated in Mineola. Marty graduated from Chaminade High School in January 1935. He attended college at the Mechanical Institute of New York City.

On Dec. 17, 1941, he married Virginia Rose Britton of Mineola, in Corpus Christi Church of Mineola.

Martin served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 14, 1941, to Dec. 19, 1945. He participated in the China-Burma-India Campaign from June 27, 1944, to Oct. 22, 1945.

Martin was primarily engaged in communications and intelligence activities and specialized as an aerial photo interpreter and an aircraft warning ground observer officer. Martin was commissioned a first lieutenant and was awarded the American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service medal with three Bronze Stars, American Theatre of Operations Medal and the W.W.II Victory Medal.

Upon his discharge from the military, Marty was employed as a safety manager for Nassau and Suffolk counties with the New York Telephone Co. and resided in Albertson. After 35 years of service he retired in May 1981.

He and Ginny moved to Guilford, and later moved to Sidney in 1997. Marty enjoyed an active retirement. In the early years he and Ginny traveled the nation and Canada in their motor home. They wintered in Leesburg, Fla.

Marty and Ginny were active parishioners at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. Together they worked on many parish activities including the Harvest Festival for 14 years.

Marty was known for the grandfather clocks he would handcraft and donate for the annual raffle.

Marty served as a lector for 20 years. Marty was also a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers and supported many of its volunteer and charitable activities.

Marty is survived by his wife, Virginia; and their seven sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Marguerite, of Pawcatuck, Conn., Raymond and Mary of Miller Place, Michael of Oceanside, Paul and Janet of Fabius, Dennis and Sally of Old Saybrook, Conn., David and Beverly of Remsenburg, and Thomas and Shelly of Aquebogue; a sister, Mary Albiston of Poway,  Calif.; three brothers, George of Saranac Lake, John and Theresa of Narrowsburg and Vincent and Sue of Dunnellon, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial with military honors will be in the New York State Veterans Home Cemetery in Oxford, on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford, the Hospice Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, or Gilead House of Prayer, Unadilla.

Marty's family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff at the Hospice Unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and the NYS Veterans Home for all the wonderful care, kindness and respect that was shown to him.

Marty was a kind and prayerful gentleman proud of his family. We are so thankful for the wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he was. Rest in God's arms, Dad.

Alberta Walrath

MOHAWK — Alberta VanDyke Coats Walrath, 86, of Church Street, passed away on Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, in the Eastern Star Home, Oriskany.

She was born on Oct. 26, 1915, in Cherry Valley, daughter of the late Harry S. and Ruth Haith Coats.

Alberta was raised in Cherry Valley and was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School, where she attained a college entrance degree.

In 1940, she married James W. Walrath in Canajoharie, a loving and devoted union of 43 years until his passing on June 20, 1983.

Mrs. Walrath worked for five years with the Al Leaf Soda Fountain in Mohawk until 1943, when she retired to care for her husband and family.

For relaxation she loved to garden in her yard. An avid bowler, she bowled with both the Herkimer Ladies Nite League and Ilion Bowling Leagues.

She was a member of the Mohawk United Methodist Church and a former member of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Mohawk Chapter #319 of the Order of the Eastern Star. where she was a past matron and had served as the chapter secretary.

Surviving are two sons, Master Sgt. David J. Walrath, USAF retired, and his wife, Martha, of Gulfport, Miss., and George R.S. Walrath and his wife, Susan, of Mohawk; four grandchildren, Tina R. Huntoon of Illinois, James S. Walrath, Robert T. Walrath and Kimberly Walrath, all of Mohawk; two great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, James, she was preceded in death by one son, James "Wally" Walrath in 1968; a sister, Chloris Coats in 1985; and her faithful pet dog, Sandy.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, with the Rev. Deborah Wollaber, pastor of the Mohawk United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday afternoon from 2 until 3:30 p.m.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Eastern Star Home for all the care, concern and compassion shown to Alberta during her stay at the home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The members of Mohawk Chapter #319 OES are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for ritualistic services.

Elaine M. Race

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Elaine M. Race, 74, of Cooperstown, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, at her home.

Elaine was born on Oct. 5, 1927, in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, the daughter of Lloyd J. and Agnes S. (Rundle) Huff.

She married Walter A. Race Jr., on July 6, 1947, at the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mr. Race died on Jan. 18, 1994.

A native of Cooperstown, Elaine was a member of the Cooperstown High School Class of 1947.

For a period of time she was employed by the Harrison Feed Store on Railroad Avenue in Cooperstown. She later went on to serve as a cashier for 21 years at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, retiring from there in October 1989.

A longtime devoted member of the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elaine was a faithful attendee of worship services each Sunday and was very active in the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She was also an extremely vital member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 Ladies' Auxiliary in Cooperstown, serving in numerous capacities including president and, most recently, secretary.

She also was involved with volunteer work at The Meadows.

Elaine is survived by her two brothers, Verne N. Huff and his wife, Jackie, of Fly Creek and Lauderhill, Fla., and Sidney L. Huff and his wife, Onnilie, of Umatilla, Fla.; a cousin, Effie Ainslie of Fly Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Vincent L. Huff, Wallace M. ("Bud") Huff and Willis F. ("Bill") Huff.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating. A time of fellowship will be held at the church immediately following the funeral service.

The committal service and burial, including a service by the American Legion Auxiliary, will take place in the spring in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday evening, Nov. 28, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when Elaine's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4636 State Highway 28, Hartwick Seminary, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frances Weigand

ONEONTA — Frances G. Weigand, 105, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Fox Hospital Nursing Home, after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 29, 1896, in Lebo, Kan., the daughter of Robert and Ellen Douglas (Moss) George.

She married George L. Weigand in Fullerton,  Calif., on Feb. 10, 1920. Mr. Weigand died Dec. 3, 1920.

Mrs. Weigand was employed by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for 20 years, until her retirement in 1961, and was employed before 1940 with the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles.

In 1961, she moved to Oneonta to be with her daughter and has been a resident of Oneonta for the past 40 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Barbara Weigand of Oneonta; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

Services will be held later at the convenience of the family in Lebo, Kan. Burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo, Kan.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Pearl Smith Oralls

BAINBRIDGE — Pearl Smith Oralls, 87, a resident at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, and formerly from Bainbridge, entered into Glory Thursday evening, Nov. 22, 2001, in Oxford.

She was born in North Sanford on Oct. 1, 1914, the daughter of the late Lewis and Lulu Stringer Smith.

On Sept. 5, 1933, she married Elmer Oralls in Deposit. He predeceased her on Jan. 7, 1986.

For 30 years Pearl was employed by the Allied Corp., retiring Jan. 31, 1977.

She was a member of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, Afton Senior Citizens and the AARP National Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a son, Lawrence Oralls, Unadilla; a grandson, Christopher Oralls, Sidney; two brothers, Ronald and Clifford Smith, both of Bainbridge; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Stanley Smith, predeceased her.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, from the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Woods, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the West Bainbridge Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Irving Fierson

ONEONTA — Mr. Irving Fierson, 83, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Brooklyn.

He married Mindy Kaufman on Oct. 10, 1943, in Brooklyn.

In 1964, Irving Fierson, R.T., was appointed to the post of ART New York state representative by the Executive Committee of the organization.

A native of Brooklyn, he began his early training in X-ray technology at the Homer Folks Hospital, after serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in 1945.

Irving was a member and past president of the Oneonta Chapter of the Civil Service Employees Association and vice president of the Catskill Mountain X-ray Society. Other service organizational activities have included the position of adjutant of the local American Legion post. He was also active in the publicity department of the Civil Service union, the American Red Cross and a lifetime member of the D.A.V.

He is survived by his wife, Mindy Fierson, of Oneonta; one daughter, Frances Ruth Fierson, of Batesville, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Irving was predeceased by one son, Charles Edward Fierson.

At the request of Mr. Fierson, there will be no funeral services or calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas J. Baker

GARRATTSVILLE — Thomas J. Baker, 43, of Garrattsville, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born April 13, 1958, in Amsterdam, the son of Thomas W. Baker and Ethelyn Mae (King) Baker.

He was married to Chastidy Winkler on Sept. 11, 1999, in Garrattsville. He and his wife had operated their own dairy farming business in Garrattsville.

Tom had resided in the Garrattsville area for the past 16 years and was formerly of the Fonda area.

He is survived by his wife, Chastidy of Garrattsville; his three children, Kristoffer Baker of Mohawk, and Tara Baker and Thomas J. Baker Jr., both of Garrattsville; four brothers, Timothy Baker of Gilbertsville, John and Richard Baker of Garrattsville, James Baker of Ames; a sister, Denise Lewis of Mount Upton; his parents, Ethelyn Baker of Garrattsville and Thomas Baker of Tribes Hill. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends also survive him.

He was predeceased by a niece, Katlin Hill; and his maternal grandparents, Henry and Ethel King.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Patricia Olmstead officiating. Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from noon on Wednesday until service time at 2 p.m.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in Tom's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
