Joseph Haynes

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Joseph Thomas Haynes, age 24, of McKoons Road, passed away on Sunday morning, Nov. 25, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on July 18, 1977, in Herkimer, son of Mark A. and the late Caren Gilligan Haynes.

A lifelong area resident he was graduate of Richfield Springs High School. Upon completion of high school he worked for Haynes Tool & Dye Company in German Flatts. For the past four years he has worked for the USA Remedial Co. and held the position of supervisor.

Joe had a love for the outdoors and all the exciting things to be found there. Hunting, fishing, motorcycling, boating and snowmobiles took up a good share of his leisure time.

Surviving him are his father, Mark A. Haynes and a brother, Jason Joseph Haynes, both of Richfield Springs; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Theresa Haynes of Mohawk; his paternal aunts and uncles, Lee Haynes and his wife, Mary, of Ilion, Marie Joiner of Ilion, Susan Phillips of Mohawk, as well as many other maternal aunts and uncles; and three cousins, Matthew Haynes, Benjamin Haynes, both of Ilion, and Theresa Vogt of Mohawk.

His beloved mother, Caren, preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 1999.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the Richfield Springs Bible Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Mohawk Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6 until 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Joseph Thomas Haynes was loved by all. He will forever be in our hearts.

Helen M. Sledjeski

MATTITUCK — Helen M. Sledjeski, a lifelong North Fork resident, died at her home in Mattituck, on Sunday morning, Nov. 25, 2001. She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Sledjeski was born at home in Cutchogue on Oct. 23, 1914, to Floyd Stepnoski and Jennie Gawrych Stepnoski.

She attended local schools and after graduating from the Southold High School in 1934, studied at the Southold Academy.

On Jan. 24, 1937, she married Stanley Sledjeski in Our Lady of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church in Cutchogue. Helen remained a devoted member of the church and was a member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society. She also taught young children the Polish language.

Helen and Stanley traveled extensively across the country including a trip to Poland, but they were especially fond of the Caribbean.

When at home, she loved to bake and tend to her flowers and garden.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Stanley; their four daughters, Joan Pondolfino of Oneonta, Connie Kreshon, Barbara Goehringer and Dorothy Brannon of Mattituck, Long Island; two sisters, Sophie Burns of Cutchogue, Long Island, and Lucille Stepnoski of Bellerose; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the DeFriest Funeral Home, Inc., 13805 Main Rd., Mattituck. Sacred Heart Rosary Society and Parish prayer services will be held there on Tuesday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Arthur J. Marks

OXFORD — Arthur J. Marks, 74, of 109 New Virginia Rd., Oxford, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton following an extended illness.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1927, in Sherburne, the son of the late William and Ruth (Owens) Marks.

On Oct. 16, 1948, in St. Joseph's Church in Oxford, he married Patricia Tansey, who survives.

Besides his wife, Pat, of Oxford; he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Carolyn Marks of Oneonta, Michael and Susan Marks of East Lyme, Conn., and Richard and Shelly Marks of Oxford; his grandchildren, Derek, Jason and Erika Marks, all of East Lyme, Conn., Kyle Marks of Oneonta and Christopher and Amanda Marks of Oxford; his brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Viola Marks of Unadilla; his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Channing Pao of Sebring, Ohio; his sisters-in-law, Diane Marks and Marie Marks; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Marks, Thomas Marks and Robert Marks.

Art was a graduate of Oxford Academy and Central School, Class of 1945, where he excelled in football and basketball.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Fort Hill Post No. 376, American Legion.

He had operated a family farm on Midland Hill since 1951, and was known for the sweet corn that he grew. He had been employed at the farm at the WRC Home in Oxford until it closed. He then worked at Emerson Co. in Oxford.

He was a former manager of Little League teams in Oxford.

He was a very active member of the Oxford Fire Department and especially enjoyed working at bingo. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and was very active in the monthly fish fry dinners.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, beginning with a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. from the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph's Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Emergency Squad, St. Joseph's Church or the charity of one's choice.

Scott D. Arlin Sr.

MORRIS — Scott D. Arlin Sr., 40, of Morris, formerly of Oneonta R.D., died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Born Dec. 11, 1960, in Amityville, Long Island, Scott grew up in South Farmingdale where he graduated high school and was a volunteer firefighter, and received a dietary degree from Adelphi University.

He married Christine J. Austin on Aug. 12, 1982, in Lindenhurst.

Scott moved to Oneonta in 1992, where, before his failing health, he was employed on the maintenance staff at SUCO, was a member of the C.S.E.A., and had been a Morris resident for the past two years.

Surviving are his wife, Christine J. Arlin; a daughter, Nicole Arlin; two sons, Scott Jr. and Sean Arlin; a grandson, Maxwell, all of Morris; his mother, JoAnne Arlin of Farmingdale; a sister, Donna Thomsen of San Antonio,  Texas; two brothers, John, of Farmingdale, and Craig Arlin, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his father-in-law, Hilliard Austin of Morris; and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call today (Tuesday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the West Davenport Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeffrey Staples, with burial following in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Patricia Slocum

ONEONTA — Mrs. Arthur (Patricia) Slocum, 71, of Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on May 4, 1930, in Delhi, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Jane (Sprague) Stoutenburg.

On Sept. 9, 1951, she married Warren Lee Archibald, who predeceased her in 1966. She later married Arthur F. Slocum in 1979.

Patricia graduated from Oneonta High School in 1947, and was employed by the Public Loan Co. as a secretary. She later worked in the optometric office of Dr. W.C. Lusk and Dr. Karl Schoonover.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta for more than 50 years.

She enjoyed antiques, crocheting and camping with her family.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Arthur; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and William Fennell of West Sand Lake; two grandchildren, William and James Fennell; two stepdaughters, Diane and Dennis Eldred of Locke and Deborah and Stephen Colwell of Saratoga Springs; seven stepgrandchildren, Peter, Todd and Susan Eldred, Rebecca Bostock, and Rachel, Ryan and Robin Colwell; two stepgreat-grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Richard Wickham of Delhi; an aunt, Eva Hunt; cousins, Jane Huyer, Florence Eaton and Harold Swanson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. C. Spencer vanGulick, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who may wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Patricia Slocum.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frederick C. Wiedeman

ONEONTA — Fred Wiedeman, 80, of Oneonta, passed away at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001.

Fred was born on Jan. 10, 1921, the son of Herman and Hazel (Ahl) Wiedeman of  Jefferson.

Fred served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, in England and Germany, where he was a prop specialist on P-52 Mustangs.

In his civilian career, he was employed by Scintilla Corp. in Sidney, for eight years. He then started his own business in auto body repair where he was self-employed until his retirement in 1974.

His great talents were reflected in many ways, most notably his hobby of painting on canvas.

On July 22, 1945, he married Sheila Lack of London, England. Together they raised six children.

Fred was predeceased by a son, Robert A. Wiedeman, Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, whom we lost in Vietnam on Feb. 25, 1968, in service to his country.

Fred is survived by his wife Sheila, of Oneonta; his sons and daughter-in-law, Rick and Mary Wiedeman of Oneonta and Steven Wiedeman of Schenectady; his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Thomas Pizza, Barbara and Bob Purcell of Oneonta and Janet and fiance, Gary Emmett, of Wells Bridge; his grandchildren, Guy and Frances Wiedeman, Shelley Elwell, Brenda Burger, Darrin Dunwald, Stacey Dunwald, Douglas McCann, Stephanie Purcell and Jennifer Wilms; and nine great-grandchildren.

Fred is also survived by his brothers, Doug and Phyllis Wiedeman of  Texas, Richard Wiedeman of Massachusetts, Merritt Wiedeman of Florida, and Carl and Helen Wiedeman of Syracuse; his sisters include Vivian Hamwey of Oneonta, Virginia Butts of Otego, Marilyn Jenkins of Sherburne and Billie Terebo of Otego.

He was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Joslin; and brothers, John Wiedeman and Herman Wiedeman.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will be present at the funeral home Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 85, in care of Walter Henriksen, 748 River Road, Mount Upton, NY 13809 in loving memory of Fred Wiedeman.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Karl E. Edwards

DEPAUVILLE — Karl E. Edwards, age 74, of Depauville, formerly of Morris, died Monday evening, Nov. 26, 2001, at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. He was in ill health for two years.

Surviving are his wife, Winterfred, Depauville; two daughters, Carol Kemp, Depauville and Kae Marshall, Depauville; one son, Scott, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl, Macedon, and Gary, Gilbertsville; his mother, Mrs. Edna Edwards, Oxford; five sisters, Mrs. Robert (Lura) Todd and Mrs. Lyle (Vera) Hoag, both of Morris, Mrs. Jean Glover, Unadilla, Mrs. Robert (Hilda) Holbrook, West Oneonta and Mrs. Michael (Ann) Mein, South New Berlin; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday evening, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home, Inc., Clayton.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Depauville Methodist Church.

Donations may be made to either Depauville Methodist Church or Depauville Fire Department.

Donald Dixson

SIDNEY — Donald William Dixson, 80, of Sidney, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born July 7, 1921, in Mount Upton, town of Guilford, to Clayton and Hazel (Moore) Dixson.

On Sept. 1, 1946, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Waldron at the Sidney United Methodist Church.

He was a 1938 graduate of Mount Upton High School and served his country for six years in the U.S. Army Artillery during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and attended Sidney United Methodist Church.

Don retired as a purchasing supervisor from Bendix Corp. in 1982, after 31 years.

Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Sandra M. Dixson of Kingston; two brothers, Charles Dixson of Conklin and Lewis Dixson of Venus, Fla.; one sister, Doris Campion of Lake Placid, Fla.; three brothers-in-law, Clifford Waldron (Wanda) of Harlingen,  Texas, Claude Waldron Jr. (Marge) of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and John Waldron (Fran) of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister-in-law, Edith Waldron Rando (Joseph) of Missouri City,  Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Nadine L. Dixson, on Dec. 11, 1970; and two sisters, Esther Dixson Duval and Helen Dixson Walters.

Friends are invited to call Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., in Sidney.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. David Masland at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Sidney United Methodist Church with burial Friday, Nov. 30, in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sidney United Methodist Church, 21 Liberty St., Sidney, NY 13838; or to Catskill Area Hospice at 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Terry L. Keeler

ONEONTA — Terry L. Keeler, 50, of Oneonta, and formerly of Cooperstown, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her residence unexpectedly.

She was born May 10, 1951, in  Jeffersonville, the daughter of George and Evelyn (Cook) Keeler.

Terry was a registered nurse having previously worked at Bassett Hospital and also did private duty nursing in the Cooperstown and Oneonta areas.

She is survived by her mother, Evelyn DeMyer of Liberty; two sons, Brendan Slater and Robin of Albany and Rylan Cougear of Cooperstown; one daughter, Courtney and her husband, Andrew Radosti of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Anneke of Albany.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Cooperstown.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Douglas Germond

SIDNEY — Douglas M. Germond, 59, of Sidney, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at his home.

He was born March 27, 1942, the son of William L. and Mary (DeCater) Germond in Schoharie.

Doug married Barbara Shafer on March 27, 1970, in Schenevus.

Doug served his country from 1963 to 1965, in the United States Navy, was honorably discharged, and re-enlisted into the United States Army from 1967 to 1972. Doug served his country in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. He later had 12 years with the National Guard.

He was employed as an inspector for the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Doug was an active member, past commander and current senior vice for the VFW Corporal R.H. Arrandale Post #7914 in Sidney.

He was also the county commander for the VFW, as well as a life member of the Vietnam Veterans in Oneonta.

Doug loved to hunt and fish and was a member of the East Worcester Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Germond, of Sidney; three sons and daughter-in-law, Lee and Connie Foland of New Berlin, James Germond of Sidney and William Germond of Sidney; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Hoag of Owego, Denise McHargue of East Worcester and Shari and Larry Sauerheber of Virginia; and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James Vargo, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Sidney, officiating. Friends may call Monday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a VFW memorial service Monday at 8 p.m.

Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad; Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta; VFW Post #7914 in Sidney; or the Vietnam Veterans of Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the directions of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Marie J. Brown

FRANKLIN — Marie J Brown, 88, of Franklin, and formerly of Water Mill, died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1912, in New York City, the daughter of John F. and Margaret (Leonard) McGrath.

She married James L. Brown Sr., on Aug. 25, 1935; he died on June 29, 1975.

For a period of 30 years, retiring in 1982, Marie was a librarian at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton. After moving to Franklin 20 years ago, she worked at the Franklin school library and the Franklin Free Library.

A devout Catholic all of her life, she was a communicant of St. Paul's Catholic Community in Franklin.

She was also a member of the  Washington Reading Circle.

Marie will always be remembered for her trademark comment, "What a life."

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Russell K. and Jin Brown of Grovetown, Ga., and Mary B. and George Harper of Franklin; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; along with a special friend, Jean Paton of Franklin.

She was predeceased by a son, James L. Brown Jr.; and a brother, Robert L. McGrath.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Mr. Michael Donnell officiating. Burial will be on Monday at 1 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Southampton.

Friends may call Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Franklin Free Library.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home of Franklin.
