Schuyler L. Swart

ONEONTA — Mr. Schuyler L. Swart, 84, of Oneonta, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born May 27, 1917, in Grand Gorge, the son of J.L. and Sarah F. (Proper) Swart.

He married the former Margaret E.  Taylor on Sept. 21, 1938, in Oneonta. She died March 30, 1993.

Schuyler had been the manager of Wrights Appliance and Electric Co. here in Oneonta before his retirement.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He was a member of the VFW Oneonta.

Schuyler is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jansky of Franklin, Mass., and Marjorie Cooney of Millis, Mass.; one brother, Victor Swart of Syracuse; one sister-in-law, Ella Swart of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by a special friend, Harriet Mitchell of Oneonta.

A service to celebrate the life of Schuyler L. Swart will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial of ashes of Mr. and Mrs. Swart will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

George A. Smith

ONEONTA — George A. Smith, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Susquehanna, Pa., the son of John C. and Eva (Markle) Smith.

George was a 1935 graduate of Oneonta High School.

He married Rachel H.F. Sobers on Feb. 24, 1940, in Sidney. Mrs. Smith predeceased him on Oct. 8, 1996.

George worked for Bendix-Scintilla as a machinist from 1942 until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, a long-term member of the Oneonta Eagles Club No. 1260 and the Sidney Moose Club. He was also a member of the Sixth Ward Booster Club.

George was an avid card player and enjoyed going to the Eagles and Booster clubs to play cards with his buddies.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, George R. and Delores Smith of Maryland and James F. and Patricia Smith of Catskill; nine grandchildren and their spouses, George RJ and Deanne Smith, Christopher Smith, Michael Smith, Stephanie and Timothy Laymon, David E. Smith, Shawn Smith, Patrick Smith, Jason Smith and Jacquelyn Stephens; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, John and Norma Sobers of Oneonta, Edna Sobers of Oneonta, Carl Sobers of Oneonta, Aurilla Stringer of Tallahassee, Fla., and Carl A. Puylara of Oneonta; an uncle, Delmar Markle of Vestal; cousins, Pauline Lucey of Vestal, Robert Wendell of Binghamton and Thomas Lyden of Susquehanna, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by one granddaughter; two brothers, John and Richard Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Ralph Cornell, Lynn Stringer, Sophia Puylara, Alfred and Katherine Sobers, James Sobers and Joanne Sobers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul A. Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends called at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family was present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of George A. Smith.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Christine Preston

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Christine C. Preston, 85, former South New Berlin teacher and longtime resident of South New Berlin, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2001, in the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin, where she had made her home for the past several years.

Born in Morris, Christine grew up there and graduated from the Morris High School, then furthered her education by attending the Oneonta Normal School. Making education her lifelong career, Christine first became an elementary teacher in Morris.

In 1941, she moved to South New Berlin, where her teaching career spanned a period of 24 years, during which she taught many students in that area. She was a kindergarten teacher from 1948 until her retirement in 1972.

Christine was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in South New Berlin and was active in the Women's Auxiliary. She was also a life member and former president of the Fortnightly Study Club, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association and the Chenango Teacher's Association.

Born Oct. 16, 1916, in Morris, Christine was the daughter of Alice (Wilcox) and Louis Card.

On July 24, 1939, in Morris, she married Donald G. Preston, who passed away June 2, 1995.

Christine is survived by her son, James D. Preston and his wife, Constance, of Centerville, Mass.; her grandson, Tod Preston of Alexandria, Va.; her granddaughter, Jennifer Powell of Uxbridge, Mass.; and two great-granddaughters, Casey and Carly Powell; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Packer of Webster; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Christine will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. from St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Charles Taylor, rector, officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery of Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, South New Berlin, NY 13843, or to the South New Berlin Fire Department Auxiliary, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich.

Phoebe B. Baker

SHARON SPRINGS — Mrs. Phoebe B. Baker, 81, of Briggs Road, died Monday, at home after a short illness.

Born in Delanson, Mrs. Baker attended Cobleskill Central School and was a lifelong resident of Schoharie County, living the last 18 years in Sharon Springs.

For 20 years, she was a supervisor for the Department of Motor Vehicles in Albany, retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the Silver and Gold Club in Sharon Springs, the Carlisle Senior Citizens, the Eagles Auxiliary in Cobleskill, the East Worcester Fish and Game Club and a charter member of the Cobleskill Fire Auxiliary.

She volunteered for Bassett Healthcare, WELCA and the Ladies Aid committee in the Zion Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Burtis Baker, whom she married Jan. 11, 1938, died in 1991.

Survivors include two sons, John Baker of Warnerville and Carl Baker of Seward; two daughters, Janet Davis of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Jacquelyn Costello of Sharon Springs; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Chapel, Route 20, Leesville.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lappeus Funeral Home, 113 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Burial will be in Esperance Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, 70 East Main St., Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Clyde E. Palmer

LIVERPOOL — Clyde E. Palmer, 84, of Liverpool, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at home.

He was born in Oneonta. He was a salesman with Kraft Foods for 40 years and retired in 1980. He enjoyed woodworking.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary  Jones Palmer, in May of 2001.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth E. and Donna Palmer of Liverpool; six stepgrandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; and three nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, 7246 Janus Park Drive, Liverpool, NY 13088.

Funeral arrangements are by Maurer Funeral Home, Liverpool.

Daniel J. Clune Jr.

ONEONTA — Daniel J. Clune Jr., 85, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001.

He was born in Oneonta on June 25, 1916, the son of Daniel J. and Myrtle (Reynolds) Clune.

He married Mattie Maurer on July 26, 1942, in Sea Cliff, Long Island.

He was a graduate of St. Mary's, Oneonta High School and Hartwick College.

Dan served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was assigned to the 584th Bomber Squadron.

Upon his discharge from the service, Dan returned to Oneonta where he lived for the rest of his life, and worked as an accountant.

He was an active member of St. Mary's Church and its former Holy Name Society. For 47 years he audited the Bishop's Appeal Fund. He was also a former member of the VFW.

Dan enjoyed sports. From his personal participation in his younger years, he progressed and enjoyed his involvement with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mattie Clune, of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Diane and William Leo of Florida, N.Y., Michael and Heidi Clune of Branchville, N.J., Marie and Jerry Pitarresi of New Hartford, Janet and Ronald Baker of Perry, Daniel III and Martha Clune of Norwell, Mass., John and Colleen Clune of Oneonta, Robert and Linda Clune of Bethany, W.Va., and Paul and Susan Clune of Oneonta; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Gerald F. Clune of Oneonta; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harry and Arthur Clune.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, and his brother, the Rev. Gerald Clune as celebrants. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Henrietta Disbrow

MARYLAND — Henrietta "Peg" Disbrow, 92, of Maryland, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 29, 1909, in Staten Island, the daughter of Jacob and Evelyn (Martineau) Pero.

She married Murvel M. Disbrow on Aug. 26, 1970, in Oneonta. He died March 25, 1996.

Henrietta moved to Cooperstown Junction in 1970, from Lyndhurst, N.J.

She had been employed at one time with the Becton Dickenson Drug Co. in East Rutherford, N.J.

She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in Schenevus.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Buddy and Lillian Beams of Schenevus; two grandsons; two granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Martin M. Mathiason; and a grandson.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Peter Mudge of the Maryland Baptist Church in Maryland, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, before the service when the family will be present.

Cremation will be held at the Hillington Crematory, Morris, with burial of ashes later in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Marjorie Campbell

ANDES — Marjorie Campbell, 87, of Andes, died Dec. 3, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Marjorie was born June 6, 1914, in the town of Bovina, the daughter of Walter and Ina (Lamb) Robson.

She married Duncan Campbell on Nov. 18, 1936. He predeceased her in 1993.

She attended St. Christina's School in Cooperstown and then received her teacher training at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

In addition to assisting her husband operating their dairy farm, Marjorie was a rural letter carrier and later was a postal clerk at the Andes post office.

She had a great love for flowers, plants, deer and birds on her farm.

Surviving are her sister, Grace Herr of Andes; sisters-in-law, Martha Campbell of Andes and Jean Robson of Delhi; a niece, Nancy Worth; great-niece, Jennifer Worth, both of North Carolina; and other nieces and nephews.

Her three brothers, Norris, George and John Robson all predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor of Andes United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the American Heart Association in the name of Marjorie Campbell are appreciated.

Dorothy E. Herr

ANDES — Dorothy E. Herr, 91, of Andes, died Dec. 3, 2001, at Wilson Hospital in  Johnson City.

Dorothy was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Hoboken, N.J., the daughter of George and Augusta (Tousman) Skories.

She married Henry Herr in October 1927. He predeceased her in 1960.

Years ago she worked as an operator for Bell Telephone and during World War II she worked in a defense plant.

A resident of Andes for 60 years, Dorothy loved cooking and people, especially her family.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Adelaide of Wurtsboro and Francis and Grace of Andes; three grandchildren, Susan Herr, Nancy Wanczowski and Andrew Herr; and one great-grandchild, Jacqueline O'Grady.

A brother, Alfred Skories predeceased her.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, with the Rev. John Priest, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, officiating. Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, in the name of Dorothy Herr are appreciated.

Daniel F. Noonan

CHERRY VALLEY — Daniel F. Noonan Jr., 84, of St. Augustine Beach, Fla., and a lifetime summer resident of Cherry Valley, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 5, 2001, at his home on Montgomery Street in the village of Cherry Valley.

He was born on July 31, 1917, in Brooklyn, a son of Daniel T. and Mary A. (Costello) Noonan.

He married Mary Eileen Flynn on May 29, 1947, in Baldwin, Long Island.

Mr. Noonan proudly served his country during World War II as a chief petty officer in the United States Navy and was involved with Naval Intelligence (ONI) in both the Central and South Pacific theatres.

For many years he was employed by Georgia Pacific Corp. in Darien, Conn., and was a sales manager upon retirement.

A devoted Catholic, Mr. Noonan served as a Eucharistic minister for the Diocese of Newark, N.J., and the Diocese of St. Augustine, Fla. He had also served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Augustine Cathedral. For 12 years, he was also a volunteer and member of the board of directors of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

A life member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a member of Council No. 611 and a 4th-degree member of Bishop Verot Assembly No. 166 in St. Augustine, Fla.

A life member of the Disabled American Veterans, he served for 12 years as chaplain of the St. Augustine Chapter. He was also a member of American Legion and VFW Posts in Florida for more than 50 years.

Mr. Noonan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Eileen, of St. Augustine and Cherry Valley; seven children, Joe Heim of Fredon, N.J., Pam Noonan of New York City and Cherry Valley, the Rev. Guy Francis Noonan of the Diocese of St. Augustine, Fla., Gail St. Pierre of Houston,  Texas, Barbara McCoy of Apopka, Fla., Gregory Noonan of Cherry Valley, Daniel F. Noonan III of Campbell Hall, and their loving spouses; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Robert Noonan of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and two sisters, Patricia Walsh Snyder of Brooklyn and Betty-Jean Casey of Gilbertsville, Pa.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Guy Francis Noonan, son of the deceased and priest at Christ the King Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Fla., officiating.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in the St. Anastasia Catholic Church Columbarium in St. Augustine, Fla.

Mr. Noonan will lie in state at his home at 50 Montgomery St., in Cherry Valley, until service time on Saturday. His family will receive friends today, Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., at his home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
