Christine K. Haus

STAMFORD — Christine K. Haus, 96, died on Dec. 8, 2001.

She was born in Gardner, Mass., the daughter of Edwin H. Kinsman and Claribel Lathrop.

She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and a post-graduate student at the New York School of Social Work.

She was for many years a social worker in New York City. She was employed in family welfare work and was social service consultant to the Visiting Nurses of New York City. She was later with the Health and Welfare Council of New York.

When living in Chappaqua, she did extensive volunteer work in Westchester County

She was married to Dr. Paul Z. Haus. He died in 1973.

She is survived by her son, Paul Z. Haus Jr. and daughter-in-law, Colleen of Teaneck, N.J.; and two granddaughters, Heather of Front Royal, Va., and Leigh of Teaneck, N.J.; and her brother, Oren L. Brown of Northampton, Mass; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Christine was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church and the Stamford Senior Citizen's Club.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at 1 p.m.

Contributions may be made in her name to the Stamford Rescue Squad or the United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A Tari.

Richard F. Shaw

EAST MEREDITH — Richard F. Shaw, 77, of East Meredith, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 4, 1924, in Oneonta, the son of Harry and Mildred (Butler) Shaw.

He married Catherine Wright on Feb. 19, 1944.

Dick was a 1943 graduate of Charlotte Valley Central School.

A lifelong resident of East Meredith. Mr. Shaw was a member of the East Meredith Presbyterian Church and a 50-year retired member of the East Meredith Fire Department.

He retired from Bendix Corp. in 1986, after 35 years.

He is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Catherine; two sons and their wives, Rexford and Eva of Clairemont, N.H., and Richard and Jane of Laurens; two daughters and their husbands, Catherine and Sherman Benjamin of Worcester, and Geraldine and Emil Mercado of Fayetteville; one brother, Gerald Shaw of Morris; two sisters, Betty Dean of Oneonta, and Joan and Forest Wollaber of Cobleskill; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick was predeceased by a brother, Carl Shaw.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Tracie Martin, pastor of the East Meredith Presbyterian Church officiating.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

Burial will be in the spring at the East Meredith Cemetery.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the East Meredith Fire Department or to the East Meredith EMS, East Meredith, NY 13757 in loving memory of Richard F. Shaw.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Paul R. Horth

CHURCHVILLE — Paul R. Horth, 79, of Churchville, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at the home of his daughter, Gail H. Ziegler, on Nottingham Way South in Clifton Park.

He was born in Oneonta on July 7, 1922, and was the son of the late Jesse and Florence (Bugbee) Horth.

In addition to his daughter, he has six surviving siblings, Ione Sprague of Clifton, N.J., Josephine Parsons of Oneonta, Kathereen Toth of Mount Vision, Bertha Redmond of East Guilford, Jesse Horth of Oneonta, and Willis Horth of Laurens. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.

Mr. Horth attended Oneonta High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with General Stilwell's Burma bridge brigade.

After serving in the army, he operated a bulldozer with the D&H Railroad.

He married Sarah Ann Wright on Nov. 15, 1947.

A few years after the birth of their daughter, the couple moved to Sidney, where Mr. Horth began working for the Sidney Central School system. He worked as a bus driver/custodian for the school district for 15 years. Following his career with the Sidney School system, the couple moved to Brockport and then Spencerport, where Paul worked with the maintenance department of Security Trust Bank.

Shortly after Sarah died in March 1980, Paul moved to Churchville. Upon retiring from the bank, he worked for Terrell's Remodeling in Churchville.

Paul was a member of the VFW in Churchville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., in Sidney. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ballston Lake Volunteer Ambulance Service, 1123 Route 146A, Ballston Lake, NY 12019 and/or to the Jonesville Volunteer Fire Company, 953 Main St., Clifton Park, NY 12065.

Ross E. Joslin

FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. — Ross E. Joslin, 87, of 103 W. Lavista St., Fruitland Park, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001.

He was born in Stamford, N.Y. and moved to Fruitland Park, Fla., in 1975.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He was a carpenter and a member of Carpenters Union, No. 146 in Schenectady, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Emory E. Joslin, Fruitland Park, Fla.; daughters, Patricia Gerken, Altoona, Fla., Mary E. Hofmann, Colonie, N.Y., Rosemary Rapazzo, Ravina, N.Y., and Kathleen Parks, Ravina, N.Y.; brother, Ferris E. Joslin, Downsville, N.Y.; sister Theodora McClean, Kortright, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Joyce Fay Allard

PARADISE, Pa. — Joyce Fay Allard, 62, went home to be with her Lord on Dec. 11, 2001, after a struggle with cancer.

Joyce Fay was born May 9, 1939, in Wykoff, N.J., the daughter of the late Herman and Jessie (Brain) Zuidema.

Her formative years were spent in Midland Park, N.J., where she attended grammar and elementary school. She then attended and graduated from high school in Pompton Lakes, N.J., with the Class of 1957.

Through high school she was a member of a singing group known as the Sweet Adelines. She carried a lifelong love of music. During high school she had to travel each day by train. This began a lifelong love of trains and especially old steam locomotives.

Upon graduation from high school, Joyce Fay attended the School of Nursing at Farleigh Dickison University.

She then married Frank Holly from  Texas and went to Germany for two years as a military wife. Her son, Daryl, was born in Germany. This marriage ended in divorce after returning to the states.

Joyce Fay then chose to move to rural upstate New York to raise her son. She and Daryl moved to Happy Valley, Goodyear Lake in 1971. Shortly after moving to New York she started working for the Oneonta School District in the business office where she was accounts payable clerk and internal auditor.

She had been a member of the Clerical Association and a past president. She worked for the school district for more than 20 years, retiring in 1994. Joyce Fay was a former member of the Oneonta Business Women's Club.

On Oct. 6, 1978, Joyce Fay married Frank E. Allard in Milford, N.Y. They were each other's very best friend forever. They shared a love for horses and in 1979, began breeding, raising, training and selling Belgian and Percheron draft horses. They were members of the Eastern Regional Draft Horse Association.

Joyce Fay and Frank moved to their little dream farm on Sperry Hollow Road, town of Maryland in 1986, living there until 1999, when they built a new home in Paradise, Pa.

Along with her great love of Frank, family, friends and her horses, cat and dog, Joyce Fay had a great love of perennial flowers. She grew well over 100 species and varieties, had vast knowledge of flowers and was often asked for her expertise.

She was also a superb cook and baker. She enjoyed birds and all of nature and God's creation. Joyce Fay enjoyed traveling and camping with Frank and they covered many miles with their camper. She was very fond of the Rocky Maine Coast.

Joyce Fay will be sorely missed by family and friends. Along with her beloved Frank, she is survived by her son and his wife, Daryl and Linda Holly, DeLancey, N.Y.; her sister and companion, Lois Roam and Gary Kaneg, Milford Center, N.Y.; her brother and wife, David and Donna Zuidema, Oneonta, N.Y.; a nephew, Mike Roam and companion, Vanessa Perry, Franklin, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

To honor the request of the deceased, there will be no calling hours and no funeral service. There will be direct cremation.

Committal will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Joyce Fay's memory may be made to Lancaster Regional Medical Center Hospice, 250 College Ave., Lancaster, Pa. 17603, care of Bonnie Tedrow or to American Lung Association of Mid New York, 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, NY 13417.

Roland B. Sines

AFTON — Roland B. Sines, 74, of Lake Placid, Fla., and formerly of Afton, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in Afton.

He was born March 26, 1927, son of the late Bertis and Mary Sines in Walton.

Roland is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Loni Sines, Afton, and Roger Sines, Afton; two daughters, Sharon Sines, Annapolis, Md., and Connie Niles, Afton; four brothers, Harold Sines, Oneonta, Bruce Sines, Walton, Lloyd Sines, Oneonta, and Earl Sines, Walton; two sisters, Doris Frank, Connecticut, and Eleanor Fisher, Oneonta; six grandchildren; and several nieces.

Funeral and committal services will be held Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Visitation will precede the service and begin at 9 a.m.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Dorotha Butler

CAZENOVIA — Dorotha Satchell Butler, 94, of Cazenovia, formerly of Sidney, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, following a brief illness.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1907, daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Ward) Satchell in Sidney.

Dorotha married Alton R. Butler on Aug. 19, 1934, in Sidney. He predeceased her on Oct. 26, 1956.

Mrs. Butler was a graduate of Sidney High School and the Good Shepard Hospital of Syracuse.

She was employed as registered nurse for the Gelder Medical Group in Sidney when she retired in August 1978. Mrs. Butler had also been a pediatric nurse in Middletown.

She was a member of the Syracuse University Alumni Association of Nursing.

Mrs. Butler was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Sidney and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cazenovia. She was the first woman warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Lester W. Trees, Cazenovia; son and daughter-in-law, David A. and Dorothy Butler of Norlina, N.C.; sister, Marion Coulter, Sidney; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney at 2 p.m. with Fr. Michael Shank officiating.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney or St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Cazenovia.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Velma Seward

NORWICH — Velma Seward, 79, of Norwich, died Dec. 11, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

She was born Oct. 10, 1922, daughter of Chancey and Shirley Spencer in Colchester.

Velma married Victor D. Seward on July 27, 1946, in Walton. He predeceased her on Oct. 26, 1990.

She is survived by two sons, Victor Seward, Walton, and Roy Seward and Anna, Binghamton; three daughters, Linda and Arthur Christensen, Guilford, Ann Norwood, Roscoe, and Sharon Crisell, Guilford; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral and committal services will be held Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chenango Memorial Nursing Facility in Norwich, NY.

Ingeborg E. Emmelmann

COOPERSTOWN — Ingeborg E. Emmelmann, age 80, of County Highway 53, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1921, in Germany, daughter of the late Kurt and Else Muller Michael. Ingeborg was raised in Germany and graduated high school there.

On Sept. 26, 1942, she married Walter F. Emmelmann in Germany.

A resident of Cooperstown since 1983, she and her husband came to this area from Connecticut.

Mrs. Emmelmann was of the Lutheran faith. In her leisure time she was an avid reader as well as a good cook. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Walter; one son, Peter and his wife, Patricia Emmelmann of Broad Brook, Conn.; a daughter, Inga and her husband, Allan Rudd of Jordanville; four grandchildren, Mark and Brad Emmelmann of Broad Brook, Conn., and Thomas and Stephanie Rudd of Jordanville.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. James Barnes pastor of the Federated Church, Jordanville officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jordanville Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Leland H. Smith

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Leland Harold Smith, age 76, of state Highway No. 20, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1924, in VanHornesville, son of the late Harold and Evelyn Filkins Smith.

A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of VanHornesville High School Class of 1942.

On Dec. 20, 1944, he married Gladys Evelyn Tooley in the Richfield Springs Methodist parsonage.

Until 1967, Mr. Smith owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1967 he went to work for the Remington Arms Company retiring in 1986.

Leland was happiest when he was surrounded by his loving family. He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Gladys; three sons and their wives, Leland R. and Rita Smith of Mohawk, Mark J. and Deborah Smith of Titusville, Fla., and Victor D. and Terri Smith of Cooperstown; five daughters, Linda L. Ramos of Pittsburgh,  Texas, Patricia A. and her husband, Joseph Hectus of Ilion, Wendy S. and her husband, John Willsey of Springfield, Carol J. and her husband, Steven Hectus of Jordanville, Sandra M. Bridger and her companion, Michael Swatling of Hartwick; one sister, Marian Fischer of Lexington, Ky.; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Smith.

Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Douglas Burliegh, officiating.

Interment will take place in Springfield Center Cemetery in the spring.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
