Mason E. Tiffany

WEST BURLINGTON — Mason E. Tiffany, 80, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Gilbertsville, the son of Ellis and Etta (Hackett) Tiffany.

He married Wanda Colburn on July 15, 1950.

Mason retired from the New York State Department of Transportation.

He continued to be active by enjoying the outdoors through fishing and hunting. Many hours were also spent sitting in his doorway socializing with neighbors while tinkering with mowers.

Mason is survived by his wife, Wanda; his children, Barbara Murphy, Linda Winsor and her husband, Robert; his grandchildren, Kevin Rous, Kristie Willix; great-grandchildren, Justin Rous, Jason Rous, Jordan Rous and George Mason Willix; his brothers, William and Raymond Tiffany; and his sisters, Gladys Wright and Shirley Tiffany and Betty Tiffany.

He was predeceased by one great-granddaughter, Erika: and his brothers, Clarence and Louis Tiffany.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Calling hours are Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mason's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Katherine Sapatek

ONEONTA — Katherine MacDougall Sapatek, 92, of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 18, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born in Pindars Corners, town of Davenport, on Nov. 1, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Iszora (Beams) MacDougall.

She married John Sapatek on March 7, 1943, at the West Davenport Free Baptist Church. He died Jan. 25, 1975.

Katherine was a retired second-grade school teacher in the Laurens Central School in Laurens. She had also taught at Butts Corners and Mount Vision School at one time.

She was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Oneonta High School and Oneonta Normal School.

She was a member of the West Davenport Free Baptist Church and formerly a member of the Women's Organization of the Church, the New York State Retired Teacher's Association, Otsego County Retired Teacher's Association and National Retired Teacher's Association.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary MacDougall of Oneonta and Rose Sapatek of Albany; a brother-in-law, Mikael Sapatek of Wellsboro; a niece, Linda MacDougall of Amsterdam; and several great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Henry F. Geerken, retired pastor and bishop for the West Davenport Free Baptist Church and prayer minister of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Katherine Sapatek.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Jane M. Boyd

ONEONTA — Jane M. Boyd, 47, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born May 20, 1954, in Ft. Eustis, Va., the daughter of Lloyd James Boyd Sr. and Helen (Cunningham) Boyd.

Jane was a lifelong area resident of Oneonta.

She enjoyed walking and crossword puzzles. She was an avid listener of the Rev. Mel Farmer's Gospel Hour radio program and enjoyed country and gospel music.

She is survived by her mother, Helen Boyd of Oneonta; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, William and Ruth Boyd, Lloyd Boyd Jr. and Joanne Puylara-Boyd and Ronald Boyd, all of Oneonta; and two uncles, James Cunningham of Oneonta and Ken Cunningham of Colliersville. She is also survived by two nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by an aunt, Ruth Cunningham.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Wednesday evening, Dec. 26, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820; Main Street Baptist Church, 333 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820; or to Oneonta Rescue Squad, 81 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Jane M. Boyd.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Betty L. Johnson

CRARYVILLE — Betty L. Johnson, 57, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.

She was born Aug. 8, 1944, in Doylestown, Pa., the daughter of Dave and Jane (Mays) Strang.

She was a homemaker in Craryville.

Survivors include her father, Dave Strang; three daughters, Tina Chase, Tammy Beecher and Diane Sheilds; grandchildren, Trish Chase, Richard Chase and Gregg Chase; a great-grandson, Gage Ricardo Chase; a sister, Rose Miles; a brother, David Strang; and a companion, John T. Erwin, who resided with Betty for 30 years.

Graveside services and burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Amawalk Cemetery in Yorktown Heights.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Bernice Carey

ONEONTA — Bernice Carey, 78, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 4, 1923, in Oneonta, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Chandler) Ross.

She married Carlton L. Carey Sr. on Jan. 27, 1940, in Franklin. He died Dec. 5, 1986.

Bernice was a homemaker in her own home. She had been employed as a connecter assembler for Bendix Corp. in Sidney. several years ago. She was a lifelong area resident and was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta. Bernice enjoyed playing cards and other games. She enjoyed visits from family and friends at her home.

She is survived by two sons, Gordon Carey and Carlton L. "Sonny" Carey Jr., both of Oneonta; and two sisters, Edna Sobers and Gladys Roe, both of Oneonta. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta. The Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta after noon on Sunday, Dec. 23. The family will be present at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service.

Bernice will be cremated and her remains buried in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy be given to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Bernice Carey.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

William Boise

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — William Boise, 72, of State Highway 23, South New Berlin, well-known area farmer and longtime South New Berlin resident, passed away Friday afternoon, Dec. 21, 2001, in the Gilmour Health Care Facility of Norwich.

Bill was born in Sherburne on Jan. 20, 1929, the son of John W. and Viola (King) Boise.

At an early age, he moved with his family to the South New Berlin area, where he attended the local schools.

When he was 14, Bill began working on the family farm, and it quickly became evident that he was a born farmer. Choosing to make farming his life's work, Bill continued to work the family farm with and for his dad until 1964. At that time, he purchased the farm and lived and worked on it with his own family until 1998, when he retired and moved to Amblerville.

On Aug. 30, 1953, in South New Berlin, Bill married Marjorie Fenton, who survives. Besides his wife, Marjorie Boise; Bill is survived by his sons and their spouses, Larry W. and Elaine Boise of South New Berlin, Carl A. and Vicki Boise of Cincinnatus, and Michael B. and Julie Boise of South New Berlin; by his sisters and brother, Helen Daniels and husband, John, of South New Berlin, Gladys Edwards and husband, Les, of Cooperstown and John M. Boise of Brown Mills; and by his six grandchildren, Veronica Whitehill of South New Berlin, Jason Boise, Michael John Boise, George Boise and wife, Jennifer, Matthew Boise and Jenell Boise. Bill is also survived by two great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Shawna Boise, in 1992.

Funeral services for Bill will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jeremy Stopford, pastor of the Beaver Meadow Christian Church, officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad, care of Treasurer, South New Berlin, NY 13843; or to the Gilmour Health Care Center Activity Fund, 68 Calvary Drive., Norwich, NY 13815.

Joan F. Folkes

PULASKI — Joan F. Folkes, 72, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at her home.

She was born May 26, 1929, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Hendriksen) Edwards.

Joan was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Pulaski.

She is survived by her daughter, JoAnne, and Peter Comino Sr. of Schenevus; two sons, Richard Folkes of New Port, Rhode Island, and Douglas and Chach Folkes of Staten Island; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Arthur Kaht of Long Island; several nieces and nephews; and her companion, Bruno (Dilly) Costintino, who resided with Joan for 32 years.

She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Carolyn Kaht; and a grandson, Michael Gaske.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, from 1 p.m. until the funeral service time at 3 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

Burial will take place at the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Joan to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905-4704.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus, NY 12155.

Irma Nicols

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Irma Nicols, 71, of Cooperstown, died at The Meadows on Saturday morning, Dec. 22, 2001, surrounded by her sons.

Irma was born April 12, 1930, in Weinsberg, Germany, a daughter of Hans and Elsa Magdelena (Ruedel) Barth.

She married Henry Richard Nicols on June 10, 1948, at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Woodhaven, Queens. Mr. Nicols died on Nov. 5, 1994.

Raised in Germany, Irma was a survivor of World War II, during which time her father was imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Nazis for speaking out against the Third Reich.

She attended school in Schwabish Hall, Germany, where she met her husband, who was serving there in the U.S. Army Occupational Forces.

An active member of Al-Anon since the mid 1960s, Irma and her husband owned and operated "Two Roads Manor," a halfway house in Athens for recovering alcoholics, from 1970 until 1976.

Irma was also actively involved as a member of the Boy Scouts of America and served as a den mother in Pack 66 in Queens and in Pack 33 in Hempstead, Long Island. In addition to earning her "Scouters Key," she was a mother and grandmother to Eagle Scouts.

An active outdoorswoman, camper and canoer, she also enjoyed swimming, having swum in competition in Germany as a teen-ager.

She also took joy in her knitting and found great strength in her faith as a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Irma is survived by her five sons and their wives, Henry and Joan Nicols of Cooperstown, John and Diane Nicols of Clifton Springs, Howard and Linda Nicols of Chestertown, Peter and Elizabeth Nicols of Galway, and Steven Nicols and Kathleen O'Donnell of Hartwick; her 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Diana, Ranae, Warren, Jessica, Chrissie, Ben, Hillary, Max and Andrea; her two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Zachary Curtis; her sister, Elisabeth Butcher of Newton, Ala.; her brother, Gerhard Barth and his wife, Lotte, of Weinsberg, Germany; her sister-in-law, Kathleen Nicols McCarthy and her husband, Daniel, of Venice, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Henry Joseph Nicols, who died May 8, 2000.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.

The committal service and burial will take place in spring 2002 in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday evening, Dec. 26, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m., when Irma's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Meadows Activities Fund, Attention: B Wing, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

David H. Oliver

NORWICH — David H. Oliver went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully at his home at age 40.

David is survived by his wife, Marcia; his stepson, Eric Jennings; his mother, Shirley Oliver; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Richard and Mary Oliver, James and Marilyn Oliver and Robert P. Oliver.; his nephews, Andrew, Tyler and Jordan Oliver; and his sister, Susanne Oliver;

David was predeceased by his father, Robert J. Oliver, on March 9, 2001.

Funeral services for David will be held Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Calvary Baptist Church of Norwich. Deacon Mark Fazio will preside.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Contributions in David's memory may be made to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815; or to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905-4704.

Gladys Osterhout

CHERRY VALLEY — Gladys W. Osterhout, 90, of 7 Timmerman Ave., St. Johnsville, formerly of Cherry Valley, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Cherry Valley, daughter of the late Robert and Harriett Eggleston Wales.

A lifelong Cherry Valley resident, she was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School and went on to graduate from the Utica School of Commerce.

On June 28, 1942, she married Earl W. Osterhout in the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, a loving and devoted union of 38 years until his passing in 1980.

During her lifetime she worked outside the home for Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, the Spaulding Bakery of Oneonta and the Cherry Valley Central School cafeteria.

Gladys had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Episcopal life. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley and the Grace Church Women's Group. She belonged to the Cherry Valley Home Bureau, was active in Girl Scouting and was the last living member of The Blue Bird Club.

She loved the outdoors and working with flowers.

She was happiest when surrounded by her many friends, neighbors and family. She will never be forgotten.

Surviving are her son, Robert, and his wife, Rachel, Osterhout of Cherry Valley; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle VanderWerker of Palatine Bridge and Edna Decker of Ilion; three nieces; Susan Barker, Jeanie Morris and Barbara Decker; and six nephews, Ronald Decker, Richard Castle, Steve Castle, Gerald Griffith, Richard Griffith and Robert VanderWerker.

Besides her parents and her husband, Earl, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Griffith.

Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be today at 11 a.m. in Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alvin Burnsworth, rector, officiating.

Spring interment will be in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

The family was present at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, on Sunday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
