Lorena F. Shaw

ONEONTA — Mrs. Lorena F. Shaw, 95, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born June 15, 1906, in Bristol, Sullivan County, the daughter of Austin and Grace (Bailey) Kouse.

She married Leo D. Shaw on Oct. 10, 1925, in Meredith. Mr. Shaw predeceased her on Aug. 22, 1976.

Lorena worked at the Oneonta Dress Company for 10 years.

She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta, where she taught the Lang-Philetha Sunday School class.

She was a member of the Golden Age Club of Oneonta for many, many years; the Y.M.C.A. Card Club; and the Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railway Veterans Oneonta Chapter.

She is survived by one son, Francis L. Shaw of New Hartford; nieces and nephews, Benjamin Shaw, David Shaw, Sheldon and Theresa Shaw, Paul Shaw and Mrs. George (Betty) Blanchard.

Lorena was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Kouse.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at a time to be announced.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Gertrude Wilcox

COBLESKILL — Gertrude Philips Wilcox, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her home, East Main Street, Cobleskill.

Mrs. Wilcox was born Dec. 19, 1909, at Hyde Park, daughter of Emory and Blanche Blake Philips.

Mrs. Wilcox had resided in Cobleskill since 1951.

She was a 1931 graduate of State Teachers College at Albany, now State University at Albany. Mrs. Wilcox was a language teacher in the Cobleskill Central School System from 1963 until retiring in 1970. Previously she taught at Worcester High School for nine years, and at Oneonta High School from 1961 to 1963. She also worked for the Schoharie County Social Service Department in the Child Welfare Section from 1959 to 1961.

Mrs. Wilcox was a member of the Retired Teacher's Associations of Schoharie County and New York State; Schenevus Chapter No. 138, Order of the Eastern Star; American Association of Retired Persons; the Alumni Association of SUNY Albany; and Schoharie County and Columbia County ARC.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Cobleskill.

Mrs. Wilcox was married July 23, 1936, in Rhinebeck to Lester Edgar Wilcox. Mr. Wilcox died Jan. 16, 1965.

She is survived by sons, Richard Wilcox, Hudson, Robert Wilcox, Brentwood, Long Island, and son and daughter-in-law, William and Carol Wilcox of West Branch, Iowa; grandsons, John Robert Thomas Wilcox and Neal Carwell.

Services will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Steffen A. Zehrfuhs officiating. Visiting is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

The family will appreciate gifts to the Memory Fund of Zion Lutheran Church, Main Street, Cobleskill.

Glenn C. Hawley

COOPERSTOWN JUNCTION — Glenn C. Hawley, 75, of Cooperstown Junction, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Hancock, the son of Clyde and Louise Menhennett Hawley.

He married the former Lulu Sellick on June 25, 1950, in Sidney, who survives him.

Glenn was the owner of Hawley's Auto Recycle in Cooperstown Junction since 1962.

He had been a resident of this area for the past 55 years.

Glenn enjoyed boating and fishing as a pastime.

He is survived by his wife, Lulu Hawley, of Cooperstown Junction; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Susan Hawley of Oneonta; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Denise Hockenberry of Cooperstown Junction, Darlene and David Duncan Sr. of Maryland, Caroline and Steve Duncan of Cooperstown, Cynthia and Martin Belmont of Rangley,  Colo., and Lorraine and Michael Bissell of Maryland; one sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Joseph Mendez of Maine; 15 grandchildren, Scott Norton, Shannon and Jessica Duncan, Danny and Jennifer Belmont, Angela Saggese, Jaime and Glenn Hawley, David and Stephanie Falcone, David Jr., Derek and Naomi Duncan, Christina Gould and Michael Bissell Jr.; 16 great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew, JoAnn, Patricia and Glenn.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Johnny Belmont.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, from the Word of Faith Church, Maryland, with the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken Sr., retired pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be given to the Milford Fire Department, Milford, NY 13807 in memory of Glenn C. Hawley.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Tina Harrington

TRAVARES, Fla. — Tina (Wood) Harrington, 53, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 21, 2001, in Travares, Fla.

She was born in Oneonta, N.Y., and attended school in Oneonta and Morris, N.Y., before moving to Florida.

She enjoyed spending summers here with her family and was a devoted Dale Earnhardt fan.

She is survived by her mother, Mildred Stevens of Laurens, N.Y.; her son, Michael Harrington of Travares, Fla.; her daughter, Michelle Harrington of Travares, Fla.; one brother, Dennis and Sue Heath of Guilford, N.Y.; three sisters, Donna Noel of Rosenberg,  Texas, Rita Davis of Laurens and Judy and Gary Sprague of Hartwick, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and many extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to local fire departments or emergency squads.

Funeral service and burial will be private.

Richard L. Welch

SCHENEVUS — Richard L. "Dick" Welch, 72, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his son's home in Oneonta.

He was born July 27, 1929, in Kalamazoo, Mich., the son of Seymour and Margaret (Simpson) Welch.

He married Alice McLeer on Feb. 13, 1955, in the Bronx.

He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran, first stationed in China and Hawaii, then recalled to serve in the Korean War.

Dick worked at the Department of Water Resources for the City of New York in Prattsville and was a fireman for the New Haven Railroad.

He moved to Schenevus in 1968.

He was a charter and life member and past commander of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752, a past commander of the VFW Otsedal Counties Council, a past commander of VFW District 3, a life member of the Susquehanna Marine Corp League in Oneonta, a member of the Milford American Legion Post 1566, the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, the C.H. Graham Hose Co. in Schenevus, the US Golf Association, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus and also attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; children, William Crawford of Bronxville, Patrick Welch of Westford, Alison and Jim Walke of Schenevus, Carleen Howland of DeBary, Fla., Kevin Welch and Maria of Oneonta; grandchildren, Danielle Welch, Doreen and Tony Wilms, Patrick and Paula Walke, Lauren and Marisa Crawford, Melissa Welch, Jaime, Kurt, Roxanne and Samantha Howland; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Cooper and Juliette; stepbrothers and sister, William Steuber of Long Eddy, Bob Steuber of Florida and Dorothy Vivas of Mt. Vernon; dear friend, Millie Iancono; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marlene Dunning.

Calling hours will be held at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with the family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a VFW Ritualistic Service at 8:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Edward J. Golding as celebrant.

Burial with full military honors will take place at the Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Dick to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820-2034.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Martha C. Stanton

EDMESTON — Martha C. Stanton, 77, of Edmeston, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at her home.

She was born March 4, 1924, in Hartwick, the daughter of Fred and Beulah (Tuller) Morris, the youngest of 11 children.

She married Francis L. Stanton on June 25, 1942, at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston.

Martha was a homemaker and soul mate to her husband, Francis (John). She worked side by side with him on the family dairy farm; and raised five children. In their later years it was common to see them riding on John's four-wheeler, with Martha perched on the side fender.

Martha is survived by her husband, Francis (John); her children and their spouses, Richard F. and Alexa Stanton, Joanne M. and Richard Williams, Donna Stanton, Connie J. and Timothy Lidell, and John E. and Christine Stanton; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one expectant great-grandchild; her sisters, Marion Bowen and Elaine Rundle; her sister-in-law, Margaret Spooner; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Abrams; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston. Calling hours are Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Donations may be made in Martha's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ernest J. Walley

OTEGO — Ernest James Walley, 86, of Otego, and formerly of Franklin, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2001, very peacefully at his home.

He was born in the town of Franklin on Sept. 27, 1915, the son of William and Rose (Smith) Walley.

He married Bernice Nightingale on Dec. 15, 1953.

Ernie attended Franklin School.

He enjoyed farming all of his life. He owned and operated his farm on Walley Road in the town of Franklin for many years. After retiring from farming, and moving to Otego, Ernie enjoyed attending and holding "garage sales."

He is survived by his wife, Bernice, of Otego; his daughter, Dona and her husband, Walter Steenrod of Erwin, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Heather and her husband, Karl Wondersek of Erwin, Tenn.; a grandson, Rhett Wondersek; a sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Harold Stevens of Charlottesville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call on Saturday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin.

Carol A. Kaye

NEW LISBON — Carol A. Kaye, 59, of New Lisbon, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in her home.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1942, in Jamaica, Queens, the daughter of Ralph and Virginia Wells.

Carol married Sidney Kaye on Jan. 15, 1961, and had four sons, Christopher, Robert, Jeffrey and Douglas.

She had worked at the ARC Otsego's Rainbow Project for approximately 10 years before becoming the New Lisbon postmaster for the last six years.

Carol is survived by her mother, Virginia; husband, Sidney; her four sons; seven grandchildren; and her brother, Mark.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. John D. Grenier, pastor of the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, officiating. Committal services and burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you honor her memory by making a donation to the charity of your choice, extending your hand where needed, giving a warm hug to your neighbor, repairing damaged relationships before it's too late, and letting your loved ones know that you love them.

Richard L. Welch

SCHENEVUS — The VFW Ritualistic Service for Richard L. "Dick" Welch, 72, who passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his son's home in Oneonta, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Viola Avery Kelly

MARGARETVILLE — Viola Avery Kelly, 86, of Mountain Avenue, Margaretville, passed away Dec. 24, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born June 3, 1915, in Bushnellville, the daughter of Elia and Lillie (Bushnell) Finch.

Her first marriage was to Marshall Avery on Sept. 19, 1936, in Arena. Marshall died Oct. 22, 1989. Her second marriage was to Howard Kelly on March 28, 1993, in Grand Gorge. Howard died Oct. 24, 2001.

Viola assisted her husband Marshall Avery in the operation of a dairy farm and boarding house in Halcottsville. In 1980, they moved to Margaretville, after spending 37 years in Halcottsville.

She attended the United Presbyterian Church, Margaretville.

She graduated from the Albany Business College.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Vivian and Norman Blakeslee, Delhi; grandson, Dale Blakeslee, Tallahassee, Fla.; granddaughter, Kelly Blakeslee, Delhi; three great-granddaughters. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating.

Burial will be in Kelly Corners Cemetery, Kelly Corners.

Calling hours will be held prior to the service Friday.

Contributions may be made in memory of Viola Avery Kelly to the Memorial Fund of Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Andrew J. Colby

BINGHAMTON — Andrew J. Colby, 77, passed away Dec. 19, 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dora Jane Colby, Binghamton; two daughters, Deborah Neiss, Chenango Forks and Andrea Keenan, Plymoth Mtg., Pa.; four grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was a graduate of Oneonta High School.

He served 21/2 years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also attended the Birritz Army University in France.

He graduated from Nework School of Fine Industrial Arts, N.J.

He was employed as a display designer for Bresee's Department Store and NYSEG before retiring.

A funeral Mass will be held on Dec. 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherines of Siena, Hillcrest.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to charity of your choice.

Irene V. Brown

GILBOA — Mrs. Irene V. Brown, 83, of Keyserkill Road, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare Facility in Cooperstown, following a long illness.

Mrs. Brown was born in Prattsville, on April 19, 1918, a daughter of Nelson and Nettie Merwin Buel.

She was the widow of Raymond Brown, who died on Nov. 2, 1995.

She was a member of the Broome Center Chapel and the Church Guild.

She was a past President of the Gilboa Parent Teachers Association, a former member of the Schoharie County Home Bureau and sat on the Board of Elections for the Town of Gilboa.

She had owned and operated the Sunset Rest Dairy Farm in Gilboa.

Surviving Mrs. Brown are two daughters, Shirley Kutzscher, Gilboa and Bonnie Mace, Gilboa; two sons, James Brown, Gilboa and Richard Brown, Gilboa; half sisters, Helen Germon, Manorkill and Loretta Lounsbury, East Durham; half brothers, Robert Buel, Gainesville, Fla. and Donald Duel, Milford; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ivan Buel, in November 1998.

Friends may call Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, from the Broome Center Chapel. The Rev. Paul Buhrke will officiate. Burial will be in Keyserkill Cemetery.
