William McCallum

GUILFORD — William E. McCallum, 51, of Guilford, passed away early Friday morning, Dec. 21, 2001, at his home.

Born on Nov. 13, 1950, in Jersey City, William was the son of Malcolm and June (Shaw) McCallum.

William grew up in Kearny, N.J., and made his home in that area until moving to his present home in Guilford in 1984.

William had been employed by the Mirabito Fuel Group of Sidney as a truck driver.

William is survived by his daughter, Jennifer McCallum of Endicott; and his son, Malcolm McCallum and his fiancee, Melody of Sidney; his father and stepmother, Malcolm and Katherine McCallum of Tom's River, N.J.; and his mother and stepfather, June and Leigh Thaeler of Derry, N.H. Also surviving are his sister, June Ann Michael of Cross Junction, Va.; and his brother, Robert James McCallum of Kearny, N.J.

Memorial services for William will be held at a later date, at a time to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Wilson Hospital, with checks to be made payable to "UHS Foundation," in memory of William McCallum, 10-42 Mitchell Ave., Binghamton, NY 13903.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Garland L. Ryan

UNADILLA — Garland L. Ryan, 73, of Unadilla, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born Feb. 7, 1928, in the town of Unadilla, the son of Jack and Cora Belle (Sisson) Ryan.

He was married to Gertrude Reynolds on May 5, 1946, in Unadilla. Mrs. Ryan passed away Dec. 6, 1995.

Garland was a lifelong resident of Unadilla and a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

He was a member of the Unadilla Friends Church.

He is survived by his sons, Larry Ryan of Unadilla and Leland Ryan of the state of Florida; his daughters, Bonnie Mae Lewis of Oxford, Cindy Palmer of Unadilla and Patty Cornell of Bainbridge; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Jackie Ryan; and a brother, Gradon Ryan.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Robert C. Conway of Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Friends Church, Unadilla.

Beverly Havrish

NAPANOCH — Beverly Havrish, 61, died on Dec. 23, 2001, at Albany Memorial Hospital.

She was the loving wife of John Havrish, who predeceased her in 1998.

Beverly is survived by her children, Allan, Linda (Jim) Reed, Paul (Mildred), all of Clifton Park, and Robert of Napanoch; her grandchildren, Sarah, Robert Reed, Justin, Nick Reed, Jessica Reed and Brandon. Also surviving is her brother, Burl Scutt of Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford, today, Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at noon with the Pastor Elliot Oakes officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Betty Jean Peters

ROXBURY — Betty Jean Peters, 73, of Roxbury, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Eugene and Bessie (Bryant) Bubach.

She married Harold C. Peters on Aug. 11, 1945, in Bloomfield, N.J.

Betty and her husband operated the Betty's Country Store at Hubbell Corners, Roxbury, for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Harold C. Peters, Roxbury; daughter, Sue Pitetti, Roxbury; son, James Peters, Roxbury; brother, John A. Bubach, Roxbury; sister, Dolores Petruzzi, New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Robert J. Peters and Harold E. Peters.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m., at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Charles Gockel, officiating.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday when the family will be present.

Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Wilhelmine S. Todd

DELHI — Wilhelmine S. Todd, 84, of Delhi, died Dec. 27, 2001, at home.

She was born March 5, 1917, in Germany, the daughter of Friedrich and Elise (Koosmann) Sellhorn.

In 1924, due to economic and political changes, the family moved to Brazil and lived in the jungle. Then in 1929, once again the family moved and resided for 13 months in New York City.

Farming was in their blood, so they purchased a farm in Bovina Center.

She married Ferris Todd on Nov. 15, 1945, in Delhi. Together they farmed for many years. For 11 years she also ran a guest resort for families from the city at the farm.

She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi.

Willa had a special love of animals, especially the Holstein breed, horses and her "German friends" dauschunds.

She always had so many flowers wherever she lived. From early spring to late fall, there was always a beautiful display of nature's colors to be enjoyed.

Mrs. Todd is survived by her husband, Ferris, at home; a daughter, Connie Burns, Delhi; a son, Mark Todd, Otego; one grandson, Corin Todd of Otego; a stepgranddaughter, Elise VanGundy; a sister, Elizabeth Rabeler, Bovina Center; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at a later date. Burial will be in Bovina Center Cemetery, Bovina Center.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Ernest J. Walley

OTEGO — Ernest James Walley, 86, of Otego, and formerly of Franklin, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2001, very peacefully at his home.

He was born in the town of Franklin on Sept. 27, 1915, the son of William and Rose (Smith) Walley.

He married Bernice Nightingale on Dec. 15, 1953.

Ernie attended Franklin School.

He enjoyed farming all of his life. He owned and operated his farm on Walley Road in the town of Franklin for many years. After retiring from farming, and moving to Otego, Ernie enjoyed attending and holding "garage sales."

He is survived by his wife, Bernice, of Otego; his daughter, Dona and her husband, Walter Steenrod of Erwin, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Heather and her husband, Karl Wondersek of Erwin, Tenn.; a great-grandson, Rhett Wondersek; a sister and brother-in-law, Leona and Harold Stevens of Charlottesville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call on Saturday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin.

Dorothy M. Winn

BAINBRIDGE — Dorothy M. Winn, 76, a longtime resident of Bainbridge, passed away after a long illness Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born on April 26, 1925, in Vandling, Pa., the daughter of David O. and Maebert (Chapman) Bell.

She married John F. Winn on May 7, 1946. John predeceased her in 1993, after 47 years of marriage.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother. While raising a large family she also played an active roll in her husband's garage business.

She was a lifetime member of Corp. Ralph H. Arrandale VFW Post 7914 Ladies Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for many years.

Dorothy is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, John P. and Nancy Winn of Jacksonville, Fla., David "Mike" and Phyllis Winn, Jerry P. and Corleen Winn, Frank W. and Carol Winn, Thomas K. and Colleen Winn, all from Bainbridge; and one daughter, Mary Lou Winn of Charlotte, N.C. Other survivors are two brothers, James "Cliff" Bell and William E. Bell, both of Oneonta; and two sisters, Barbara J. Winn of Oneonta and Laura B. Haney of Franklin. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, George Winn of Sopchoppy, Fla.; and three sisters-in-law, Margaret Edwards of Oneonta, Carol  Taylor of Cooperstown and Lois Bell of DeLand, Fla.

Dorothy is also survived by 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, whom she was very proud of; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased earlier this year by her brother, David O. Bell of DeLand, Fla.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Friends may call Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, with family in attendance from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts may be made to the NYS Veteran's Home, Oxford, NY or to your local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Irma Belle Sullivan

OTEGO — Irma Belle Sullivan, 98, of Otego, N.Y., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Irma Belle lived with her son and daughter-in-law, James and Betty Sullivan, for three years before going to the nursing home.

She was born Jan. 25, 1903, in Otego, N.Y., the daughter of Henry and Leora (Hopkins) Steenrod.

Irma Belle married Ora Sullivan on Jan. 22, 1920. Mr. Sullivan predeceased her in 1943.

She was a lifelong area resident having worked in the Mica Plant in the 1960s and also worked at Bresee's Department Store. When Ora was the groundskeeper at the Oneonta Country Club during the summers, Irma Belle would work in the kitchen preparing meals. After the death of her husband, she worked as a self-employed housekeeper and would take in laundry, clean and iron it. Irma Belle was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James Ora and Betty Sullivan of Otego; two daughters, Beatrice Holmes of Stanardsville, Va., and Hilda Decker of West Oneonta; three sisters, Neva Mae Utter of Oneonta, Ada Flynn of Oneonta and Albertina Barnwell of Syracuse; two sisters-in-law, Ella Steenrod of Otego and Evelyn Steenrod of Middleburgh; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Irma Belle was predeceased by a son, Lyle Sullivan; one sister, Sara Steenrod; and two brothers, Stewart Steenrod and Emmons Steenrod.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the West Oneonta Cemetery in West Oneonta.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the West Oneonta Baptist Church, West Oneonta, NY 13861, or to the Otego Fire Department, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 in loving memory of Irma Belle Sullivan.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

William E. Hoff

WALTON — William E. Hoff, 67, a Walton resident, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Oneonta, NY.

He was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Jersey City, N.J., to William and Martha (Freese) Hoff.

He currently had a locksmith business in Walton and had previously been a policeman for the New York Port Authority at the Holland Tunnel and had also worked with ceramics for many years, having his own business. He was in the U.S. Navy and then the National Guard for a total of 211/2 years. He was a member of the Walton Veteran's Club, the Walton Fire Police and master of the Walton Grange.

He was married to Grace Bush in Walton on Sept. 24, 1983, who survives at home in Walton.

William E. Hoff is also survived by two sons, Matthew Hoff of Toms River, N.J., and Steven Hoff of Kingston, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Mary Coons of Walton; a sister, Barbara Griffin of Cocoa, Fla.; grandchildren, Josh Butler of Sidney, N.Y., Melissa and A.J. Haverly and Seth, Caleb and Kilee O'Dell, of Sidney, N.Y.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Hinckley and  Taylor Butler.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where friends may call Sunday, Dec. 31, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Cronin, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Walton, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Walton Fire Police, c/o Walton Fire Department, 59 West St., Walton, NY 13856, would be appreciated.

Eleanor M. Stewart

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Eleanor M. Stewart, a 49-year resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where she had recently been residing. She was 87.

Mrs. Stewart was born on Feb. 15, 1914, in Boston, Mass., to Thomas and Helen (Barnes) Mullen. She attended the Boston University School of Accounting.

She married Frank Stewart on Oct. 12, 1942, in Boston, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Women's Club in Ft. Lauderdale and Coral Shores Civic Association.

Mrs. Stewart will be remembered for love of family and for her caring and giving nature.

She is survived by a son, Edward G. Stewart, of Ft. Lauderdale; two daughters, Mary Covell of Walton and Carolyn Dobies of Boston, Mass.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Stewart, of Durham, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by sons Thomas and Frank Stewart.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner North and Delaware streets, Walton, N.Y., where friends may call Sunday, Dec. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at St. John the Baptist Church on Benton Avenue in Walton.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, would be appreciated.

Sarah Preiser

WALTON — Sarah Preiser, 23, died at home in Walton on Dec. 28, 2001, after a graceful and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born June 13, 1978, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, the daughter of Gary and Lynda (Litz) Preiser; and sister of Rebecca.

Sarah attended Walton Central School where she was active in sports, excelling in basketball and track. She still holds the school record for long jump.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Alternative to Violence Program (AVP). She continued facilitating AVP workshops in schools and prisons throughout her college years. Sarah graduated from the University of Rochester with honors May 14, 2001. There, she was active in intramural sports, the outing club and residence life.

Sarah loved outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, canoeing and camping. She was very sensitive to environmental issues. She was skilled in sign language, poetry, song writing and pottery. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble and sunshine. She is remembered for her peacefulness, love of life, beautiful smile and special ability not only to give but to receive love.

Sarah is survived by her parents and sister; grandparents, Marvin and Ruth Preiser of Middletown and Charles and Ginger Litz of New Kensington, Pa.; aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving relatives. Sarah will be remembered by her loving friend, Eric Senecal, and his family and the best group of friends a person could have.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

The funeral was arranged by Clark & Winter Funeral Service.

A private burial service was conducted by Rabbi Donald Roberts at the Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a charity of one's choice or to the Sarah Preiser Memorial Scholarship Fund at Walton Central School, Walton, NY 13856.

Friends are invited to visit the family at their home throughout the week.

A memorial service to celebrate Sarah's life will be held at Temple Beth El, on Chestnut Street in Oneonta, on Jan. 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. Participants may wear bright colors per Sarah's request.

The family wishes to thank the many members of the medical community who cared for Sarah, especially Dr. Laura Weylman and Dr. Sara Jo Grethlein. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to the many generous, compassionate and supportive friends who have sent cards, flowers, gifts, food and love to sustain them through this season.

Fred Ingham Jr.

BAINBRIDGE — Fred Ingham Jr., 79, of Bainbridge, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

He was born Aug. 10, 1922, son of the late Fred and Lottie (Ward) Ingham Sr., in Waverly.

Fred married Eleanor "Betty" Daniels on Sept. 24, 1952, in Genoa. She predeceased him on May 26, 1999.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny Ingham of Bainbridge and Ronald and Tammy Ingham Sr. of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Lou and Clifford Scott of Masonville and Mary Ann and Charles Engell of Bainbridge; a brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Mavis Ingham of Erin; eight grandchildren, Summer and Daniel Hromada, Ronald Ingham Jr., Kristena Ingham, Wendy Engell, Charles Engell Jr. and Ariel, Austin and Reed Scott; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Hromada and Ethan Michael Ingham; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

His brother, Donald Ingham, and sister, Rozella Rivenburg, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 1 p.m. Visitation will precede the service and will begin at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonville Fire Department or the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc., at 21 Main St. in Sidney.
