Philip C. Comings

COVENTRYVILLE — Philip C. Comings, 76, of county Route 27, went home to be with his Lord on Dec.

31, 2001, from his farm, "Comyncroft," where he had lived his entire life.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather — a man who daily lived his Christian faith. His legacy is his family, of whom he was very proud.

Born April 17, 1925, in the farmhouse at "Comyncroft," son of George H. and Catherine Evans Comings, he graduated as valedictorian in 1943 from Afton Central School.

He was New York State FFA president and received the American Farmer Degree in 1944 from the National FFA. Following graduation, he went into partnership with his father on the farm.

He married Pauline Jeannette Poole on Aug. 2, 1944, at the First Baptist Church in Afton, where he later was a member and served his church family as a longtime Sunday school teacher, deacon, trustee and church moderator. He was a member of Gideons International.

Phil was a Registered Holstein breeder, and sheep, poultry, maple syrup and honey producer. After selling his dairy operation, he was livestock specialist for 11 counties, working for New York State Ag and Markets, and worked with Heifer Project International and Resource, Conservation & Development. He was also a custom sheep shearer.

He served his community as a 25-year tax assessor for the town of Coventry, was a 25-year member of the Afton Central School board, was a member of the executive board of New York State Rural Schools, was former president of the Chenango County School Boards Association and was a former member of the

Chenango County Planning Board.

He served the agricultural community as past president of Chenango County Extension Service — Agriculture Department, was chairman of the South Central New York Resource Conservation & Development Council steering committee, was manager/treasurer of Southern Tier Sheep & Wool Co-op wool pool, past president of New York State Empire Shepherds, past president of New York State Soil & Water Conservation Districts, former director of the New York Holstein Association and served on the agriculture advisory board to Cornell University in Ithaca.

His many awards for service rendered include the Service to Mankind Award from the Afton Sertoma Club, and the first Soil Conservation Society of America's Merit Award, given by the New York State Chapter of the SCSA.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons and their wives, Patrick P. and Nancy, Troutman, N.C., and Timothy C. and Leslie, Cato; three daughters and their husbands, Sharon C. and Richard Cutting, Coventryville, Laurie C. and Stephen Jones, Ellisburg, and Deborah C. and Timothy Vroman, Coventryville; two brothers, Robert, Canastota, and George, Niagara Falls; and two sisters, Catherine Bickford, Norwich, and Anne Thomas, Sackets Harbor; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Afton First Baptist Church on Caswell Street. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church's Activity Center.

Donations in Phil's memory may be made to Afton First Baptist Church or Hospice of Chenango County.

Arrangements are by the Dorothy Memorial Homes of Afton and Bainbridge.

Joseph E. Floyd Jr.

DELANCEY — Joseph E. Floyd Jr., 78, of DeLancey died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, peacefully at his home in the company of friends.

He was born July 28, 1923, in Newton, Mass., the son of Joseph and Hazlett (Worthing) Floyd.

Joseph was a veteran of World War II and a sergeant of the 74th Engineer Light Pontoon Company.

A graduate of Boston University, Mr. Floyd was a longtime employee of Marine Midland Bank in the World Trade Center Towers of New York City.

In 1997, Joseph moved to his Kilanowsky Road home and soon became great friends with his neighbors.

Joseph was a 40-year member of the National Doll Association, to which John Wayne, the well-known actor, also belonged.

A relative, William Floyd, signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, as a representative of New York.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Hazlett Floyd; and a brother, Jeff Floyd.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Long Island.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Flora Frewert

UNADILLA — Flora Mary (Sullivan) Frewert, 81, of Unadilla died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 4, 1920, in the town of Worcester, the daughter of Charles J. and Ethel (Evans) Sullivan.

Flora graduated from Worcester Central School in the Class of 1938.

She married Robert L. Frewert on July 8, 1954, in  Pennsylvania. Mr. Frewert predeceased her in 1960.

In 1942, they moved to Sidney and Flora worked at Bendix-Scintilla for 15 years. In 1955, they moved to Unadilla. She worked at Wassaic Developmental Center in 1965, until her retirement in 1981.

She is survived by her stepdaughter, Virginia Ireland of Bainbridge; niece, Lynda Galbreath of Oneonta; nephews, Gerald Sullivan of Thousand Oaks,  Calif., and Thomas Sullivan of Hawthorne; six grandchildren, Valerie Perovich of Hemlock, Ronald Ireland of South Lebanon, Ohio, Nadine Fineout of Oneonta, Karen Kantor of Petersburg, Ky., Cheryl Liberty of Clarks Summit, Pa., and Dorene Ireland of Nashville, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Flora was predeceased by a brother, Earl E. Sullivan.

Private family funeral and committal services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with Chaplain Nelson Park, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Worcester Historical Society, Worcester, NY 12197 in loving memory of Flora Mary (Sullivan) Frewert.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Vernon A. Graig

STAMFORD — Vernon A. Graig, 77, died at his residence on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

He was the loving husband of Gladys Hendricksen. They were married in  Jefferson on Oct. 9, 1948.

Vernon was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from the  Jefferson post office in 1985.

Besides his wife, Vernon is survived by his sons, Gary A. of Mesa, Ariz., Thomas A. (Bobbie) of Stamford, and Jeffrey A. (Barbara J.) of Albany. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Andrea, Gary, Emily, Keith, Kyle and Lukas; many nieces and nephews; and a brother, Andrew of Blythe, Ga.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street) Stamford, today, Wednesday, between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at the Stamford Trinity Lutheran Church at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Duchow officiating and Mary Louise Hendricksen assisting.

Donations may be made in Vernon's name to the Stamford Trinity Lutheran Church.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Henry Lundquist

VOORHEESVILLE — Henry P. Lundquist Jr., 78, of Altamont Road, died Dec. 30, 2001, at the Veterans Hospital in Albany.

He was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Waterville, the son of the late Henry P. and Rose Marcel Lundquist Sr.

An area resident for most of his life, he graduated from Richfield Springs High School. He continued his education in electronics, graduating from Hudson Valley Community College.

A U.S. Army veteran, he proudly served his country from 1943 and was honorably discharged as staff sergeant in 1946.

In 1944, he married Shirley Hartwell.

Henry had worked as a sales manager in the Albany region for The Magnavox Co., retiring in 1986.

He and his wife have resided in Voorheesville since 1960.

He was a member of St. Matthews of Voorheesville; St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs, the Knights of Columbus and the Voorheesville American Legion.

Surviving besides his wife of 57 years, Shirley; are two sons, Thomas Paul and his wife, Amy, Lundquist of Florida, and Eric Charles Lundquist of Ravena; two daughters, Carol Rose and her husband, Ronald, Pullmain of Selkirk, and Joan Marie Lundquist of Glenmont; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terance Healy officiating.

Interment with military honors will take place next spring in St. Joseph Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Percy O. Risedorph

COLUMBUS — Percy O. Risedorph, 93, of the town of Columbus passed away Dec. 30, 2001, in New Berlin.

He was born Nov. 16, 1908, in the town of Columbus, the son of Jay and Goldie (Wiltsie) Risedorph.

He married Winifred Louise Rogers on Sept. 7, 1940. She predeceased him Feb. 13, 1999.

He spent his childhood in the Columbus area. He was a graduate of New Berlin Central School.

He was an audio technician for Wilber Audio & Visual in New Berlin. He also worked for Simmons Precision of Norwich and later retired from the State University College at Oneonta.

He was a member of the Columbus Quarter Church in the town of Columbus.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 during World War II as a radio repairman. He was a member of Phoebus Lodge No. 82 F&AM and the American Legion No. 0348.

In the earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, fishing at his cottage on the St. Lawrence River in Canada and playing cards.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Ernest Clemons of Leonardsville officiating. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, from noon to 2 p.m., preceding the funeral service at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Interment will be in Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department, New Berlin.

Halladay Pierce

HAMDEN — Halladay Pierce, 89, a lifelong resident of Hamden, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital of Delhi after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 31, 1912.

Halladay served as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Panama.

Returning to Hamden, he married Priscilla Aitken on April 15, 1949, that year they built their home and established a contracting business, he was known for building and remodeling homes throughout Delaware County, retiring in 1977.

He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Nettie Pierce; and his beloved wife, Priscilla, in 1992.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Merrie Pierce of West Oneonta; and his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and George Bolton of Walton; grandchildren, Eric Pierce and Karyn Pierce; and his brother-in-law, Howard and Doris Aitken of Hamden.

Halladay was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping and camping. He was a member of the Hamden Fish and Game Club and the Delhi Pistol Club. Through his involvement with the Delhi Bird Club (past president) and Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society, he shared his love of bird watching, nature photography and travel.

His musical interests found him as a member of the Delaware County Men's Choir and he shared his talents on the fiddle, banjo and guitar, playing locally with his three-piece band.

He was a member of the American Legion Donald W. Gleason Post No. 190 of Delhi, a former trustee of the Hamden Presbyterian Church and a member of the Hamden Senior Citizens Club.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Halladay Pierce will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Hamden Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Martin officiating.

Before the service, the family will receive friends at 1 p.m. in the church.

Burial will be in the Hamden Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: William B. Ogden Free Library, 42 Gardiner Place, Walton, NY 13856.

Local arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Edmund J. Yenson

SIDNEY — Edmund Joseph Yenson, 86, passed away on Jan. 2, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born April 11, 1915, in Simpson, Pa., the son of Henry Yenson and Mary Stanina Yenson.

He was a graduate of Fell Township High School in Simpson. After high school he joined the CCC's (the Civil Conservation Corps) and worked in western  Pennsylvania.

On May 12, 1940, he married Mary Rose Piegza in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Simpson, Pa.

In the early 1940s he moved to Sidney to work for Scintilla Magneto Co. After a long career as a foreman in the experimental department of the Bendix Corp., he retired in 1975.

Edmund was a former member of the Bendix Management Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and worked with Sacred Heart Boy Scout Troop 88. Until recent years, Ed and his wife, Mary, were active members of a Square Dance Club.

He and Mary spent many Saturday mornings at the Bainbridge Open Air Market.

Ed was a very avid reader all of his life and enjoyed frequent visits to the Sidney Public Library to pick up his next adventure book.

Edmund was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph of Scranton, Pa., and Henry of Bainbridge.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, of Sidney; and three daughters, two sons-in-law, a son and four grandchildren, Joann and Bernie  Schmidt of Chesterfield, Mo., Carolyn and David Doi of Edgewood, Ky., Evelyn Day of Santa Cruz,  Calif., and Charles Yenson of San Francisco,  Calif.; grandchildren, Christopher  Schmidt of  Washington, D.C., Joseph  Schmidt and his wife, Kristin, of Reno, Nev., Susan Anne Doi of Sidney, and Garrett Day of Palm Desert,  Calif. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Riggs of Philadelphia, Pa., and Agnes Stanina of Port Richey, Fla.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will precede the service at C.H. Landers Funeral Home beginning at noon.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Elsie E. Currie

DELHI — Elsie E. Currie, 94, of Delhi, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Jan. 6, 1907, in Bury St. Edmonds, England, the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Bumstead) Bird.

She married John C. Currie on Sept. 7, 1935. He died Dec. 2, 1985.

Mrs. Currie spent a year at the age of 17 in nursing school.

She toured for several years with an all-girl band, playing multiple instruments, ending her Vaudeville career as the leader of a trio.

After many years living on a farm in the Delhi area with her family, she worked for about 10 years as a lab technician at Middletown Milk and Cream Co. in Fraser.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Currie May and her husband, Richard, of Walpole, Mass., and Jackie Currie DuMond and her husband, Larry, of Henderson, Nev.; a son, David J. Currie and his wife, Janice, of Oneonta; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Vance Bird of Lawrence, Ernie (AnnaBell) Bird of Delhi and Larry (Sally) Rigas of Walton.

A brother, Reginald Bird predeceased her.

Memorial services will take place on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with lay speaker Barbara Smith officiating. Calling hours will be on Thursday evening, Jan. 3, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at West Delhi Cemetery in West Delhi.

Contributions to her memory may be made to the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
