Isabelle Cawley

SIDNEY — Isabelle Cawley, 80, of Sidney, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born May 16, 1921, daughter of the late Elmer and Josie Buchanan Howe.

Isabelle married William E. Cawley on Aug. 29, 1940, in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Feb. 14, 1993.

She was a member of the Sidney Center Baptist Church.

Isabelle is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Earnest and Elaine Cawley of Unadilla, and William and Beverly Cawley of Pecksville, Pa.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and George Barrows of Unadilla, Della and Steve Argent of Roscoe and Patricia and Ron Conn of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Charlene Howe of Masonville and Jesse and Rose Howe of Harpursville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Ken Kinnie of Sidney Center, Ruth and Richard Bristol of Sidney Center, and Marjorie and Clifton Steele of Florida; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers; two sisters and grandson, Jeremy Cawley.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 3 p.m. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Burial will be in Coventry Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Thelma Armstrong

OXFORD — Thelma Estelle Armstrong, 85, a resident of the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford, and formerly of Afton, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Jan. 2, 2002, at her residence in Oxford.

She was born Aug. 2, 1916, in Walton, the daughter of the late Charles and Bernice Tanner DuMond.

On July 29, 1934, she married Donald C. Armstrong in Walton. He predeceased her on March 6, 1988.

For several years Thelma served as the Afton town clerk.

She attended the First Baptist Church in Afton.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald E. and Janice Armstrong of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Donald Campbell of Binghamton and Carolyn and Raymond Neidlinger of Bainbridge; daughter-in-law, Carol Armstrong of Afton; sister, Fern Cranston of Oneonta; and brother, Eugene DuMond of Walton.

Her son, Roger Armstrong; and a brother, Rufus DuMond, predeceased Thelma.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Jack Beukema, pastor of the Park Avenue Baptist Church in Binghamton, officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring at the Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

At her request there will be no calling hours.

Louis J. Donofrio

STAMFORD — Louis J. Donofrio, 86, of Stamford, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in College Point, the son of Carmine and Anna (Guirdino) Donofrio.

He married Carmella "Millie" Ventre in 1947.

Mr. Donofrio was a farmer and carpenter, moving with his wife to Stamford in 1947.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Hobart Rod and Gun Club.

Wife, Millie, at home; two daughters, Barbara (Bill) Lackman of Arizona and Joan (Richard) Triolo of  Pennsylvania; a son, Louis M. Donofrio of Florida; three grandchildren, Erik Lackman, Daniel Triolo and Gina Triolo; two brothers, John (Margaret) Donofrio of Florida and Donald Donofrio of Stamford; and two sisters, Josephine Donofrio and Dorothy Donofrio of Stamford, survive.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato officiating. Calling hours will be on Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association or Sacred Heart Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Marie A. Bergmann

CHADBOURN, N.C. — Marie A. Bergmann, 43, of Chadbourn, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Premier Living Health Care Center in Lake Waccamau, N.C.

She was born Jan. 29, 1958, in Stamford, N.Y., the daughter of Gerald Mestyanek and Nora Roberts Mestyanek of Grand Gorge, N.Y.

She is survived by her parents of Brunswick, N.C., and Grand Gorge; two daughters, Taryn A. and Eddie S. Butler of Taber City, N.C., and Destiney N. Bergmann of the home; one son, Brodie and Tirsta Darran of Whiteville, N.C.; one sister, Linda A. McMullen of Kerhonkson, N.Y.; two brothers, Roger J. Mestyanek of Raeford, N.C., and Lester G. Mestyanek of Newburgh, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Kerstin Hope Bergmann, Eddie Shane Butler Jr., Alyssa Brianna Butler, Alyson Grace Butler and Ashley Lynn Butler; one aunt, Evelyn Roberts of John's Island, S.C.; two uncles, Harold Roberts of Ellenville, N.Y., and Leo Mestyanek of Margaretville, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 4, at 8:30 p.m. at the Worthington Funeral Home Chapel in Chadbourn, N.C.

Alice Chamberlin

LITTLETON, Mass. — Alice W. Chamberlin passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at age 94.

A Michigan native, she received a B.A. degree from Michigan State Normal College and an M.A. from the University of Michigan.

She was married to the late Vell B. Chamberlin, who, along with his brothers, Burr, Ross and Lynn, were born and raised in Franklin and graduated from the Delaware Literary Institute.

Mrs. Chamberlin will be buried in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery with her late husband.

She is survived by her two children, Dann of Groton, Mass., and Grace Kelly of Naperville, Ill., as well as by two grandchildren.

Charles R. Smith

 Johnson CITY — Charles R. Smith, 81, formerly of  Johnson City, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

He was born in Maryland, on Feb. 27, 1920, the son of Charles and Eva (Kilde) Smith.

He worked for the Endicott- Johnson Shoe Co. in  Johnson City.

Charles served with the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict, with the 501st Signal Service Co.

Graveside services for Mr. Smith, with full military rites, will be held in the spring in Elk Creek Cemetery in Schenevus.

The arrangements are by the Behe Funeral Home in Oxford.

Sylvester Merante

WALTON — Sylvester P. Merante of Walton, formerly of Cold Spring, died Dec. 31, 2001. He was 83.

Mr. Merante worked for 20 years as a New York state corrections officer at the Mattewan facility in Beacon, before retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Walton.

Mr. Merante was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Mechanicsville, to Anthony and Josephine Talarico Merante.

He was educated in Cold Spring at Haldane High School.

Mr. Merante served in the Army during Word War II from 1941 to 1945, receiving the Asia Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both of Cold Spring.

On Oct. 22, 1955, he married the former Marion Hall at her home in Cold Spring.

Mr. Merante lived in Walton for the past 10 years. Before that he lived in Fishkill from 1985-1991, and in Cold Spring, where he spent his boyhood and adult years.

In Cold Spring, he was a member of the Cold Spring United Methodist Church, Our Lady of Loretta Roman Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Cold Spring Fire Co., Democratic Club, served eight years as town tax assessor, was active in high school sports and later in bowling leagues, enjoying golf, camping and traveling.

Along with his brothers, Mr. Merante drove truck, delivered ice, and managed a small store in Cold Spring.

He is survived by his son, Ralph; grandsons, Caleb and Joshua; daughter-in-law, Carol, all of Shokan; sisters, Melinda Micucci of Fishkill and Anna Gamello of Valatia; 15 nephews and four nieces.

His wife, Marion, of 46 years predeceased him in September of 2001. Brothers, Joseph, John and Thomas; and sisters, Connie, Lucy and Nora, died previously.

Mr. Merante's family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, at state Route 10 and North Street in Walton, on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. at the Reservoir United Methodist Church, state Route 28 in Shokan, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the survivors of the World Trade Center summer camp and respite program may be given through the Reservoir United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 515, Shokan, NY, in his name and would be appreciated.

Betty Horey

NEW BERLIN — Betty Horey, beloved wife of Brian and mother to Jason, Carol and Marissa, died suddenly in her sleep Wednesday morning, Jan. 2, 2002.

She was born Feb. 19, 1948, in Manchester, N.H., and grew up in Oneonta.

A 1966 graduate of Oneonta High School, Betty earned bachelor and master of science degrees in physics education from the State University College at Oneonta.

She and Brian were married on Sept. 30, 1972, and resided at 3 High St. in New Berlin.

She was employed as a mathematics teacher in the former Gilbertsville Central School District and then in the computer department of Preferred Mutual Insurance Co. in New Berlin before devoting her life's work to raising three children. Betty most recently was employed at the J.C. Penney Store in Oneonta.

She was instrumental in forming the Parent-Teachers Organization at the New Berlin Elementary School and worked with several school activities and community organizations including the Community Readers Program, the Band Parents Association, the Drama Club and most recently the Unadilla Valley Winter Guard.

Betty is survived by her husband; and children; and one brother, Richard Barley of Georgetown.

She was predeceased by her mother, Zella Barley, of Oneonta, who died in 1998.

Funeral arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin. Calling hours for family and friends are scheduled for 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 10 also at the funeral home.

The family asks that donations in lieu of flowers, be made to the "Eden Alternative Fund" care of Phyllus Furgison at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, One Terrace Heights, New Berlin, NY, or to the New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Dorothy Tweedie

WALTON — Dorothy E. Tweedie of Walton, a lifelong resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at her home. She was 80.

Mrs. Tweedie worked side by side with her husband on their family dairy farm and auction business.

She was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Walton, to Andrew and Blanche Van Akin Constable.

She graduated from Walton Central School.

She married Stilson Tweedie on Nov. 9, 1940, in Delhi.

Mrs. Tweedie will be remembered for the many vegetables sold at their farm stand.

She is survived by her daughters, Kay (Rodney) Gale of Otego, Alexa (Richard) Stanton of Edmeston and Lee (Herman) Peterson of Richmondville; her sisters, Iris Elderkin of Walton and Blanche Michael of Inverness, Fla.; her grandchildren, Heidi and Dan Yorke of Schenevus, Brideen and Chris Edwards of East Worcester, Amy and Michael Rifanburg of Edmeston, Jeff Galley and Michel Estell of Garrattsville, Paul Stanton and Julie-Jo Stanton of Edmeston, Michelle Stanton of Michigan, Christie Stanton of Florida, Kimberly LaTourette of Otego, Kathryn Gale of Otego and Lindsay Gale of Olive Bridge. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Emily Rifanburg; and two expected great-grandchildren; a special niece, Margaret Constable; as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Stilson, and 13 brothers and sisters predeceased her.

Memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel at the corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton.

Donations to the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206 in her name would be appreciated.

Corsina Poluliah

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Corsina Celia Poluliah, 88, of Springfield Center, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2002, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born on Sept. 16, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Michael and Laura Marchese.

She married William Poluliah on Oct. 2, 1937, in New York City. Mr. Poluliah died on April 17, 1996.

Early in her life, Mrs. Poluliah and her family moved to the East Side of New York City where she was raised and educated.

For a brief period of time she was employed in a hat factory but devoted most of her life to raising and caring for her family.

In 1978, she and her husband moved to Springfield Center.

She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Mrs. Poluliah is survived by her two sons, Ronald Poluliah of Cooperstown and William Poluliah of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Katherine LaBarbara; and her brother, Phillip Marchese.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Burial will be at a later date in the St. Vladimir's Russian Orthodox Christian Cemetery in Jackson, N.J.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2002, from 10 a.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Carlton H. Slater

COOPERSTOWN — Carlton H. Slater, 67, of Woodside Hall, formerly of Cobleskill, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare after being strickened.

He was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Cobleskill, and was the son of Harley J. and Evelyn (Coons) Slater.

Mr. Slater was a self-employed maintenance worker and also worked at the Cobleskill Sunshine Fair, and the Morris and Schaghticoke fairs.

He resided in Davie, Fla., for a few years and was a member of the local Moose Club.

Mr. Slater is survived by four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Virginia M. and Levi Simpson of Coconut Creek, Fla., Audrey J. Bruger of Davie, Fla., Joyce S. and William Cary of Cobleskill and Lillian S. and George (Buddy) Beams of Schenevus; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard A. and Dorothy Slater of Margate, Fla.; one uncle and aunt, Melvin C. and Dorothy Coons Jr. of Gloversville; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, at 171 Elm St. in Cobleskill, with the Rev. Franklyn Wright officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Schoharie County A.R.C., P.O. Box 307, Schoharie, NY 12195.
