Melitta M. Wimmer

STAMFORD — Melitta M. Wimmer, 90, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and formerly of Hollis Queens, passed away on Dec. 28, 2001.

Mrs. Wimmer was the devoted wife of the late Sabastian Wimmer.

She was the loving mother of Irene Willis, George Wimmer, Melitta Dela Osa and Arthur Kusterer. She was the dear sister of Ella Dietz, Beata Hertkom, Hildegard Friedrich, Rita Walter and brother, Alfred Friedrich. She was the devoted grandmother of 12 surviving grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the dear sister-in-law of Vera and George Mitterer, Marie and Hans Reinwald and Anna and Tony Weger.

Friends may call today (Friday) at the Hall Funeral, at 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street) in Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato officiating.

Interment will follow the Mass at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Doris E. Wagner

HARTWICK — Mrs. Doris E. Wagner, 79, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born July 30, 1922, in Baldwin, the daughter of James and Joan (Werner) Watson.

Survivors include three children, Naylan F.W. Haggart, Llelyn D. Ott and Cecelia T. Whalen; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory in Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Otego Presbyterian Church on River Street in Otego, with the Rev. Albrecht officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Hartwick Fire and Rescue No. 1 (attention ambulance).

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Harriett Mitchell

ONEONTA — Harriett Mitchell, age 88, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born in East Springfield on Jan. 15, 1913, the daughter of Ethel (Bridger) Rathbun and Edwin Rathbun and married Joseph Mitchell in Cooperstown on July 9, 1934. Mr. Mitchell died June 13, 1992.

She graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1929 and Syracuse University School of Nursing in 1934. She worked in Syracuse and Oneonta's Fox Hospital and then assisted her husband in operating Mitchell Moving and Storage in Oneonta.

She was active for many years in Democratic politics as committee woman of the First Ward and former city chairwoman.

Harriett was an avid bowler, bowling for many years at the Oneonta Elks Club. She was past president of the Oneonta Bowling Association and held numerous offices in the league. She was voted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in 1994.

She was a member of the former Oneonta Woman's Club, Daughters of Cooperstown, St. Mary's Church and a member of the Otsego County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy Mitchell Brazier and her husband, Ronald Brazier, of Oneonta, Jody Mitchell Barnes and her husband, David Barnes, of Oneonta; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. and Christine Mitchell of Oneonta; two grandchildren and their husbands, Amy and Mark Smithling and Mary Beth and David Stalder of Oneonta; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Guy Rathbun, of Morris and a sister, Fannie Lee, of Oneonta; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani officiating.

Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, after 3 p.m. Sunday.

The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening.

Those who wish may make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St. Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Harriett.

Jean M. Patterson

SIDNEY — Jean M. Patterson, 77, of 12 Lincoln Ave., Sidney, N.Y., passed away Thursday afternoon. Jan. 3, 2002, surrounded by loving family at her residence in Sidney.

She was born June 13, 1924, in  Johnson City, N.Y., the daughter of the late Rev. E. and Hazel Felter Martin.

On July 4, 1942, she married Robert C. Patterson. He predeceased her on Jan. 13, 1984.

Jean was a Sidney resident for more than 50 years and was formerly of the Honesdale, Pa., area. She was a graduate of the Honesdale High School.

For more than 33 years, Jean was employed at the Amphenol Corp., Sidney. She retired Dec. 5, 1996. She was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church and the I.A.M.& A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

She is survived by her son, James R. Patterson, of Sidney; her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gary Richman, of Bainbridge, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Elwin Patterson, of Afton, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Walters, of Honesdale, Pa., and Nina Martin, of Honesdale, Pa.; four grandchildren, Shawn Bradbury, Brian Patterson, Michelle Peck and Alicia Cochran; two great-grandchildren, Skylar Cochran and Joshua Peck. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jean was predeceased by her brother, Gerald Martin.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the Afton and Bainbridge United Methodist Churches.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, in the spring.

Friends are invited to call from 2 p.m. Sunday until services at 3 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts may be directed, in her name, to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

June R. Sullivan

MILFORD — Mrs. June R. Sullivan, 74, of South Main Street, Milford, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on March 20, 1927, in  Washington, Mo., a daughter of Herman and Ellen (Kamps) Miltenberger. She married the Rev. Sanford W. Sullivan on June 23, 1946, in Oneonta, N.Y.

At the age of 7 years, Mrs. Sullivan and her family moved from Missouri to New York City, where they lived for several years before moving to  Jeffersonville.

In 1943 she became employed at Rome Air Field where she met her future husband. Following their marriage, they lived in Oneonta for several years, as well as in Rochester, N.Y., before moving to  Pennsylvania, where her husband served four United Methodist churches.

Mrs. Sullivan was a devoted and faithful Christian. She and her husband enjoyed visiting the Holy Land, which they had done several times.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, the Rev. Sanford W. Sullivan of Milford; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cathleen and Michael Salamone of Spencerport; Nancy Sullivan of Oneonta and Deborah and Joseph Tringali of Wilmington, Del.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Oliver Miltenberger of California.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery in the spring of 2002.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Mrs. Sullivan's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Milton J. Harmon

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Milton J. Harmon "Squach" died on Oct. 27, 2001, at the age of 75.

He was born in Albany on June 8, 1926, to Claire and Milton Harmon.

He moved to Oneonta with his parents and twin brothers Frankie and Johnny.

He graduated from Oneonta High School.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta. In his earlier years, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and grew up with a strong passion to become a priest.

From 1942 to 1944, he was a mechanic at Woolheater Service Station in Oneonta.

In the spring of 1944, he joined the United States Navy. Milt was a veteran of World War II and ship's cook third-class on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was awarded the American Theater Medal and Victory Medal.

After serving in the Navy, Milt's career began working for New York State Electric & Gas Corp. He was employed 39 years with NYSEG until his retirement in 1986. At that time he was chief lineman. He loved his work and enjoyed teaching his crews all that he had learned over the years.

In his private life, he enjoyed many hobbies that included fishing, hunting, snowmobiles, boating, scuba diving, flying and shooting, until the last five years as he was unable to get around without crutches or his wheelchair.

He married Virginia A. Amitrano on June 15, 1947, who predeceased him in 1991.

Milt was remarried to Helen Escobar in 1983. They moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., in 1987. She predeceased him in 1998.

He is survived by one daughter, Carole A. Palmeter, of Oneonta; two grandchildren, Eric M. Palmeter of Troutman, N.C., and Kimberly A. Palmeter of Weehawken, N.J.; and one brother, Frank of Utica.

He was predeceased by one brother, John in 1979; his father in 1956; and his mother in 1959.

In the spring, there will be a private gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life at the time of his burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Donal J. Lifgren

SCHENEVUS — Donal James Lifgren, 67, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 24, 1934, in Bovina, the son of Alfred and Beatrice (Estus) Lifgren.

He first married Beverly Manchester in 1957, and then married Nancy Hodges in Bonita,  Calif., in 1987.

Don moved to Schenevus in 1957. He was a well-known businessman and the former owner of the Schenevus Hotel.

He was the Schenevus town supervisor from 1978-1979. He was also employed by Taggert Electric in Franklin.

Don was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1951 to 1955.

He was a lifetime member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752 and the Delhi American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lifgren, of Schenevus; his mother, Beatrice Mabon, of Schenevus; two children, Debra and Ken Travis of Dover Plains and James and Sandy Lifgren of Santee,  Calif.; three stepchildren, Rhys D'Palma of Oneonta, Sheila and Bruce Latone of Rochester and John Gennarino of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Nancy D'Palma, Kaylee and Dylan Travis, Christopher and Michael Lifgren, Christopher and Rachel Latone; a niece; and several aunts, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was predeceased by his brother, Alfred A. "Stub" Lifgren Jr.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Burke, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

The burial with full military honors will take place at the Schenevus Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Don to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820-2034.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Kenneth H. Songer

MARGARETVILLE — Kenneth H. Songer, 69, of Hall Road, Margaretville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his residence.

He was born April 5, 1932, in Antlers, Okla., the son of Elbert and Donia (Bryant) Songer.

He married Suzanne Humphreys on March 13, 1954, in the Holy Rosary Church, Edgewater, N.J.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955.

He was the owner and operator of an auto repair shop in Westwood, N.J.

He lived in Margaretville for the past 14 years, moving from Ridgefield, N.J.

He was a member of Middletown American Legion Post 216, Margaretville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Songer, of Kirkland, Wash.; son, David Songer of Kirkland, Wash.; two brothers, James and Samuel Songer of  Texas; one sister, Imogene Porter of Hugo, Okla.; nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Committal service will be private.

Calling hours will be held prior to the service on Saturday, from noon to 1 p.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Kenneth H. Songer to the Memorial Fund of Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Ruth E. Thomas

SIDNEY — Ruth E. Thomas, 90, of 3 Sunset Ave., Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Itaska, the daughter of the late Raymond and Kathryn Walter Thomas.

Ruth was employed by the Bendix plant from 1942 until her retirement Sept. 27, 1973.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and the I.A.M. & A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

She is survived by her companion and caregiver, Mary Hart, Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Dorothy Thomas,  Johnson City; three nieces, Donna Verschueren, Lynne Jane and Barbara Elliott; nephew, David Thomas; special friends, John and Val Rowley of Vestal and Floyd and Helen Rockefeller of Sidney. Also, surviving are several great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Eunice Chapel; and a nephew, Dean Thomas.

Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the charity of one's choosing.

Rosalie Faherty

GUILFORD — Rosalie Faherty (nee Brown), devoted wife of the late Peter J. Faherty, died after a short illness on Jan. 5, 2002.

She was the loving mother of Rosalie Joan, Eileen F. Williams and Peter Kevin; grandmother of Douglas, Duncan, Peter and Kaitlin; and great-grandmother of Stephen Francis. She is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews; 63 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 26 great-grandnieces and nephews.

Born and raised in New York City and a graduate of St. Agnes School and Cathedral High School, Mrs. Faherty was a longtime resident of Flushing.

She retired as chief cashier of Bloomingdale's Fresh Meadows and relocated to Guilford in the 1970s.

Mrs. Faherty was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Sidney and a member of the Guilford Senior Citizens, serving as recording secretary and treasurer for many years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Schuck officiating. Friends may call Tuesday with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.
