Edwin C. Lally

SIDNEY — Edwin C. Lally, 91, of Sidney, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

He was born June 10, 1910, son of the late Joseph and Anna Muller Lally in Brooklyn.

Edwin married Carrie Hallock on Dec. 31, 1955, in Sidney Center.

Mr. Lally was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center, the Masonville Lodge No. 606 F.&A.M. and the Oneonta Lodge of Perfection. He was also a member Scottish Rite Chapters of Oneonta and Binghamton.

Ed served 10 years as Sidney Center representative on the Sidney Recreation Commission and was the president of the S.C.O. in 1968. He served on the Explorer Post Council and was the director of the Tri-County Red Cross for several years.

Mr. Lally was employed as a proofreader for Keith Clark Corp. in Sidney, when he retired in 1973. After retirement he was a teacher's aide at Sidney High School and assistant supervisor of Green Thumb Inc.

He is survived by wife, Carrie Lally, of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Lisa Lally, Sidney Center and John and Melissa Lally, Santa Clara,  Calif.; daughter, Anna and Richard Marchant, Norwich; and nine grandchildren.

His brother, John Lally, predeceased him.

A Masonic service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the United Methodist Church of Sidney Center at 2 p.m.; a service of remembrance and celebration of life will follow at 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center United Methodist Church.

Carl Gifford

MASONVILLE — Carl Gifford, 84, of Masonville, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his home.

He was born Jan. 10, 1917, son of the late John and Louise Hulbert Gifford in Masonville.

Carl served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Beatrice Finch in March 1943 in Sidney. She predeceased him on Feb. 4, 1999.

During his life Carl worked for IBM, Scintilla and was president of the Rock Royal Creamery. He was also a self-employed farmer and logger.

Mr. Gifford served one term as supervisor for the town of Masonville.

He is survived by four sons, John Gifford and Eileen Russell, Oneonta, Michael and Kimberly Gifford, Sidney, David Gifford, Bainbridge and Henry Gifford, Florida; two daughters, Frances and Mitch Goff, Sidney, and Jeanne Gauthier, Guilford; friend and companion, Mary Westfall, Unadilla; 12 grandchildren; one unborn great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Gatje of the Trout Creek Community Church officiating.

Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Frank J. Zwick

ANDES — Frank J. Zwick, 80, of Andes, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2002.

The son of the late Johann and Franziska (Donhauser) Zwick, he was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Amberg, Germany, coming to the U.S. when he was a young boy. His family settled in New York City where he grew up and married Josephine M. Griffin on Dec. 30, 1941.

A World War II veteran (1942-45), Frank served in the Pacific as an Army medic.

A former 19 year resident of Waldwick, N.J., and a machinist by trade, Frank was employed for 27 years by VanVlaanderen Tool & Die Co. in Paterson, N.J., moving to Andes in 1973, and subsequently employed as a driver for Delaware Opportunities for 12 years until his health declined a year ago.

Frank was also a talented upholsterer, photographer and woodworker, and a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church, Delhi, and James D. Calhoun Post No. 200, American Legion, Andes.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Josephine M. Zwick, at home; three sons, Gary Zwick of Andes, Gerard (Kate) Zwick of Newburyport, Mass., and Philip (Sarah) Zwick of Delhi; two grandchildren, Adam and Alison Zwick; a brother, John Zwick of Paramus, N.J.; and a niece and nephews.

Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 11, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Fr. James McDevitt.

Burial will be later in the Andes Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Andes Emergency Squad will be gratefully appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Linda L. Crabill

DECATUR — Linda L. Crabill, 53, of County Route 39, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at her residence following a long illness.

Mrs. Crabill was born Aug. 14, 1948, in the town of Fulton, Schoharie county and was the daughter of Isaac and Helen (Stannard) Armlin.

Formerly of West Fulton, Mrs. Crabill was a graduate of Middleburgh Central School.

From 1996 to 2000, she delivered the My Shopper paper.

Survivors include her companion, Robert Benson, of Decatur; a daughter, Melody Dailey of Esperance; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William and Michele Crabill Jr., of West Fulton, and Timothy Crabill of Conesville; two sisters, Arvilla McMillen and Marion Fisher, both of Middleburgh; five brothers, Philip Armlin of Middleburgh, Kenneth Armlin of Sharon Springs, Harold (Dick) Armlin of Schenectady, Ronald Armlin of Edgewater, Fla., and Kermit Armlin of Middleburgh; seven grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Lisa Trombley of Breakabeen, Pam Savage of Delhi and Sherry Fletcher of Virginia; four stepsons, Rob Benson of Springfield, Dean Benson of Carlisle, Brandon Benson of Decatur and Bert Benson of Schenevus; and six stepgrandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11.

Burial will be in the Armlin Hill Cemetery, town of Fulton.

Daniel Timer

MOUNT VISION — Funeral and committal services for Daniel Timer, 86, of Mount Vision, who passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 8, 2002, at The Meadows in Cooperstown, after an extended illness, will be held Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Bicknell, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vision, officiating.

William A. Dunker

FRANKLIN — William A. Dunker, 95, of Franklin, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Sept. 2, 1906, in New York City, the son of William and Augusta (Bornkiesel) Dunker.

He married Rita Donovan on Nov. 6, 1937, and she passed away on Aug. 16, 1987.

In his younger years, he played semi-professional baseball, and was auditioned by the New York Yankees.

A graduate of New York University, Mr. Dunker was an accountant for 30 years with Sperry-Rand Corp. in Lake Success.

A resident of Franklin since 1987, moving here from North Merrick, Mr. Dunker was a communicant of St. Paul's Catholic Community in Franklin.

He was a member of the North Merrick Fire Department, a former member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Nocturnal Adoration Society of Sacred Heart Church in North Merrick.

He is survived by a son, Brian T. Dunker and his wife, Marie of Hicksville; five granddaughters, Joan Dunker, Victoria Maskulyak and her husband, Michael, Patricia Dunker, Carolyn Holland and her husband, David, and Alison Dunker; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Dunker of Franklin; three stepgrandchildren, Janni Simner and her husband, Larry, Jolie Simner and Bret Simner; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Nicholas Maskulyak.

He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins; along with his faithful pet, Freddie.

He was predeceased by a son, Wallis Dunker in 1992.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at 7 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, with the Rev. Mr. Michael Donnell officiating.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Lawrence Russell

SCHENEVUS — Lawrence H. Russell, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at the Ross Home in Maryland.

He was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Keldron, S.D., the son of Herman S. Ethel (Gladstone) Russell.

He married Georgia Ruling in Delhi on June 26, 1937.

Larry worked in the dairy feed business as a store manager for the GLF Corp. in Middleburgh, Greenwich and Bloomfield.

In 1960, he moved to Schenevus where he managed and later became owner of Farmers Feed Inc., with stores in Schenevus and Worcester. He retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia, of Schenevus; two sons, Howard and Joan Russell of Newnan, Ga., and Wayne and Lela Russell of West Oneonta; his very special niece, Marian Poole of Guilford; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Timothy Russell of Newnan, Ga., on Jan. 21, 2001.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Richard Burke, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place at the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Larry to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Elizabeth Colton

ONEONTA — Mrs. Elizabeth Colton of Oneonta, formerly of Afton, died Jan. 8, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born May 22, 1909, the daughter of Paige and Carrie (Webb) Stillwell.

She married Ralph Colton of Unadilla on Aug. 1, 1929. He predeceased her on July 7, 1990.

Mrs. Colton was a 1926 graduate of Afton High School and a 1927 graduate of Unadilla Teacher's Training Class. She then taught school in one-room district schools.

She was a longtime member of the Afton Methodist Church and a former member of Unadilla Freedom Chapter No. 179, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a longtime member of the Afton Historical Society.

Mrs. Colton is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Daniel Fritz of Oneonta; two grandsons, Robert and Christine Fritz of Staatsburg and Randall Fritz and Joanne Manderville of Oneonta; and a great-granddaughter, Barbara L. and a great-grandson, Robert D., both of Staatsburg.

She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Tryon of Afton; a niece, Mrs. Norman Davies of Chenango Bridge; and a nephew, Richard Tryon of Afton.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m. Friends may call before the service at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Colton's family would like to thank the Oneonta Nursing Home and staff for their loving care and support.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Michael Hromada

EAST GUILFORD — Michael E. Hromada, 83, of Route 8, East Guilford, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2002, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

He was born April 30, 1918, in Binghamton, the son of the late Michael and Angeline Hurskeui Hromada.

On June 25, 1939, he married Florence Fink in Deposit.

Michael was a chief steward at the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney. He retired in 1979, after 30 years with the company.

Mr. Hromada was a member of the I.A.M. & A.W. Local 1529, Sidney. He was a former member of the Bainbridge Civil Air Patrol.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Florence P. Hromada, East Guilford; five sons, Edward Hromada, Afton, Donald Hromada, Bainbridge, William Hromada, Bainbridge, Daniel Hromada, Guilford and Duane Hromada, Bainbridge; two daughters, Barbara Ann Schermerhorn, Lexington, S.C., and Florence Dibble, East Guilford; five sisters, Josephine Cutting, Afton, Minnie Aherns, Afton, Julia Corey, New Jersey, Barbara Bixby, Binghamton and Rosie McBride, Monticello; and a special brother-in-law, James Fink, East Guilford. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Michael Hromada; two brothers, John and Joseph Hromada; and two sisters, Angeline Cutting and Ann Backus predeceased him.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with Fred DeBari, presiding.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad, Mount Upton, NY 13809 if desired.

Ralph A. Goodhill

ONEONTA — Ralph A. Goodhill, 77, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002.

The son of the late Alexander Goodhill and Eva (Sorensen) Goodhill, he was born in Paterson, N.J., moved to Caldwell, N.J., as a child, and remained an area resident until moving to Oneonta, in the spring of 2000.

He married his high school sweetheart, Yvonne, during the second world war, and served in the Army Corps of Engineers as a cartographer in Europe and the Philippines.

He attended the University of  Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts before entering the military, and became a licensed architect through an apprenticeship program in 1956. He worked in his own architectural practice until his retirement in 1999, successfully planning homes for, and pleasing his many clients.

Early in his practice, he transformed his love of photography into an architectural photography sideline, and spent several years developing a clientele.

Ralph was a truly creative individual, modest in light of his accomplishments and without pretense. His dry sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him.

He was a dedicated member of Kiwanis for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne A. Goodhill; his sons, James Montmarquet of Nashville, Tenn., Doug Goodhill and his wife, Jaana, of Baltimore, Md., and Roger Goodhill and his wife, Rachel, of Brooklyn; his daughter, Anne Gohorel and her husband, John, of Delhi; his sister, Margot Gibson, of Massapequa; his aunt, Stasia Flink, of Drumore, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held in New Jersey at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.
