Joseph B. Fowler

LAURENS — Dr. Joseph B. Fowler, 87, of Laurens, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born April 3, 1914, in Tooele, Utah, the son of Benjamin A. and Rose (Crowther) Fowler.

He was first married to the former Patricia Robinson in 1939. They were later divorced. On March 13, 1970, in Carson City, Nev., he married Lorene Stewart.

Dr. Fowler graduated from Ogden High School in 1932, Weber College in 1934, the University of Utah in 1937, and the University of Louisville Medical School in 1941.

During World War II, Dr. Fowler served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, and held the rank of lieutenant commander.

In 1949, he served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. He then joined the medical staff at St. Mark's Hospital where he continued his practice. Dr. Fowler was credited in delivering more than 2,000 babies, and performing 2,600 major surgeries while there.

Dr. Fowler pursued his medical career in the field of emergency medicine, and took additional training at Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia. In 1971, as president of the medical staff, he was instrumental in establishing the emergency medical department in St. Mark's Hospital, and served as its director for a short time.

In 1973, he moved to Oneonta, where he was instrumental in establishing the emergency department at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. He served as its director through 1977. In 1978, he developed and directed the emergency department in the new Sullivan County General Hospital in Harris.

Dr. Fowler's last position before his retirement was with the New York State Workers' Compensation Board as a medical examiner.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, West Oneonta. He also was a member of several medical societies, and served from 1964 to 1968 on the Blue Cross/Blue Shield state executive board in Utah.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene Fowler, of Laurens; his daughters, JoAnne (Ray) Odorizzi of Taylorsville, Utah, Suzanne (Frank) Bishop of Kalama, Wash., and Pamela Fowler of Salt Lake City; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois (Harry J.) Todd of Salt Lake City, and Norma Rose (Shirrel R.) Young of Provo, Utah; and a brother, Wendell C. (Alice) Ririe of Sandy, Utah.

He is also survived by two stepchildren, Barbara Assadi and Dawn Baron of San Francisco,  Calif.

He was predeceased by a sister, Vella Neil; and five great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Dr. Fowler's life will be held on Friday evening, Jan. 18, 2002, at 6:30 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Balmoral Drive, West Oneonta, with President Mark Madero presiding.

In lieu of flowers and memorial contributions, the family has requested that you do a kind deed for a relative or friend.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary Piscitelli

ONEONTA — Mary Piscitelli of Oneonta died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Kortright, the daughter of Emilio and Carmella (Piasso) DiFiore.

She married Joseph Piscitelli on June 30, 1934, at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta. Joseph died in 1983.

Mrs. Piscitelli was a homemaker and housewife having spent her entire life living on Maple Street in Oneonta.

She loved flowers and had beautiful flower gardens that were widely admired by many people.

Mary was a member of the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Mary's School on Walnut Street in Oneonta.

She is survived by four children, Joseph Piscitelli of Carson City, Nev., Tom and Lisa Piscitelli of Oneonta, Amelia Piscitelli of Harrisburg, Pa., and Jim and Mary Ann Fox of Oneonta; her sister, Jane Knapp; grandchildren, Matthew Fox and Mark and his wife, Cristina Fox, all of Northampton, Mass., and Heather Fox of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Louise LeSeur and Lena Agostano.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani officiating.

Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to A.O. Fox Nursing Home, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary K. Wenck

ONEONTA — Mary K. Wenck, 81, of Oneonta, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born April 11, 1920, in Watervliet, the daughter of Andrew and Eva (Dzubach) Kesluk.

She married Robert Seifarth in 1945, and was later married to Paul Wenck in 1968. Mr. Wenck died in 1987.

Mrs. Wenck was a bank teller from 1949 until her retirement in 1982. She was first employed at the Citizens National Bank and continued on as a teller with the National Commercial Bank and the Key Bank, all in the same building on the corner of Main and Dietz streets in Oneonta. She was a dedicated employee, having enjoyed her contact with fellow employees and the customers at the bank.

Mrs. Wenck was a lifelong area resident, having spent winters in Florida, since her retirement.

She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters, Andrea Seifarth  Jones and her husband, Kenneth, of Oneonta, Karen Moore of Saratoga Springs, Kathy Spytko and her husband, Joseph, of Richfield Springs, and Barbara Church and her husband, Peter, of Hoosick Falls; six grandchildren, Marissa and Amanda Jones, Michelle Baker, Adriane and Kevin Spytko and Michael Church; one great-grandchild, Chase Baker; and two cousins, Agnes Dzubach of Watervliet and Delores Burns of Warren, Mich.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her stepmother, Rose Kesluk; a son, Gerald Wenck; and a grandson, Michael Stockman.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to either the Oneonta PBA, Police Department, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the FOF, 31 Maple St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Julia Palmater

JEFFERSON — Julia Marie Palmater, 82, of  Jefferson, died Jan. 14, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 27, 1919, daughter of the late Lloyd and Minnie Whitehead Burnside in Masonville.

She is survived by a son, James Holland, Sharon Springs; daughter, Yvonne VerValin, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Nettie Haynes, Schenectady, and Virginia Buffo, Otego; brother, Sanford Burnside, Fly Creek; two grandchildren, Nancy VerValin and Jeffrey VerValin; and eight nieces and two nephews. Julia and her husband raised Allen Palmater.

Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Masonville Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Russell J. Van Steemburg

WELLS BRIDGE — Russell J. Van Steemburg, 89, of Wells Bridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 9, 1912, son of the late Almonda and Agnes (Deamer) Van Steemburg.

Russell was a self-employed carpenter and mason in the Tri-City area before his retirement.

He married Mina Birdsall Gassler on Oct. 27, 1974, in Unadilla.

Mr. Van Steemburg was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church and the Wells Bridge Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Mina Van Steemburg, Wells Bridge; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Dean Williams, Bennettsville; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Lois and Bruce Mitchell, Bennettsville; six granddaughters, Teresa Talambas, Fort Worth,  Texas, Sharon and Frank Bell, Unadilla, Karen and William Jerman, Bainbridge, Sheryl Hopkin, Herndon, Va., Heather Williams, Frederic, Md., and Judith Ann and David Cobb, Japan; and seven grandsons, John Williams, Houston,  Texas, James Williams, Bennettsville, Stephen Petzold, Harrisburg, Pa., Thomas Mitchell, Afton, James Mitchell, Mount Upton, Jeffrey and Alison Mitchell, Harpursville and Andrew Mitchell, Bainbridge.

He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Milton H. Petzold, Bainbridge; daughter, Lucille Petzold; grandson, David Petzold; and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Steensma, pastor of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, and the Rev. Robert Wesley of Sidney officiating.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Gladys Devenpeck

ALBANY — Gladys P. Devenpeck of 357 Kings Road, died Jan. 11, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a short illness.

Mrs. Devenpeck, 84, was born in Middlefield Center, Cooperstown and came to this area 25 years ago.

She was a graduate of Cooperstown High School.

Mrs. Devenpeck was an avid antique collector and was a member of the DAR, the Schenectady Bridge Club and the Port Charlotte Florida Cultural Center.

She is survived by her son, Allen Devenpeck and his wife, Linda, of Altamont. Her grandsons, Stuart Devenpeck of Duanesburg and Mark Devenpeck of Long Beach,  Calif., also survive her. Her dear companion of many years, Sam Gilmore, resides in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Contributions to the Cooperstown Rescue Squad and the Altamont, New York, Rescue Squad will be appreciated.

There will be no calling hours, and spring interment will take place in Cooperstown.

Arrangements are by Richard DeLuccia.

Stuart O. Howe

BAINBRIDGE — Stuart O. Howe, 76, of Bainbridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

He was born Sept. 23, 1925, son of the late Homer D. and Mildred G. (Teed) Howe in Unadilla.

Stuart served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Ruth Rowland on Oct. 15, 1944, in Sidney. She predeceased him on May 15, 2001.

Stuart was the postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service in Sidney for more than 40 years.

He was on the board of directors for the Delaware County ARC where he was instrumental in starting the Delaware County ARC Workshop. Stuart was also on the Board of Visitors at the Broome Developmental Center in Binghamton. He was president of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association in Sidney.

He was a life member of the Sampson Naval Base. Stuart was a member of the Rockdale Rod and Gun Club and the R.H. Arrandale Post No. 7914 VFW in Sidney.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Lauren and Fay Howe of Otego; brother, Ralph L. Howe, Willow Creek,  Calif.; two sisters, Betty Ackert, Sidney and Vivian Peck, Sidney; granddaughter, Deborah and Jace Hurlburt, Guilford; grandson, David Howe, Bainbridge; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Duane A. Howe; and sister, Arlene Shaw.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Amos of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Unadilla officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience Saturday morning before the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Prospect Hill Cemetery Association or the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Alice D. Weller

NEW BERLIN — Alice Daniels Barber Weller, 93, of New Berlin, and formerly of Deltona, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Wayne Aldrich.

She was born April 22, 1908, in Butternuts, the daughter of Frank and Elma (Culver) Daniels.

She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters; and one son, Howard L. Barber.

She married William L. Barber, who died in 1970.

She is survived by three children, Albert Barber and wife, Marian, of Walton, Dora M. Carr of Galway, and Florence Aldrich and husband, Wayne, of New Berlin.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She married John Weller, who predeceased her in 1992.

Alice attended a one-room schoolhouse until eighth grade. She graduated from Gilbertsville Central School and Oneonta Normal School. In high school and normal school, she played basketball and softball.

At age 7, she learned to drive a team of horses, and raked hay for her father and her grandfather during the summers.

Alice lived in Mount Vision for many years, and worked at the Oneonta Dress Factory.

In 1970, she relocated to Florida, and worked making custom drapes until retiring at age 74. After retiring, she enjoyed going to plays, competing in outdoor shuffleboard leagues, a bowling league and playing cards with her friends. She continued this until reaching the age of 90.

She was a very talented seamstress, who also enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Alice was an avid reader right up to the time of her death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815 in loving memory of Alice D. Weller.

A memorial service will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kurt Funke, pastor of the South New Berlin Baptist Church, officiating. The family will be in attendance at 1 p.m. to greet friends.

Burial will take place at the Hillington Cemetery, Morris, at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
