Clarabelle Stevens

ILION — Clarabelle Stevens, 64, passed away Jan. 17, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born June 18, 1937, in Oneonta, the daughter of James and Gussie VanBuren Steptoe.

Clarabelle had worked at Oneonta Dress Factory and The Meadows Nursing Facility in Cooperstown.

She had also been a volunteer at Valley Health in Herkimer.

She was a member of the People's Undenominational Church in Cedarville and the Christian Women's Club.

Survivors include four children, Pricilla McAdams of Cooperstown, Edward and his wife, Becky Lambright, of Westford, Gracie Forgit of Milford and James Northrup of Dannamora; a sister, Patty Weaver of Binghamton; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the People's Undenominational Church in Cedarville. Calling hours will be Sunday, at the church, from 2 p.m. until the time of the funeral.

Spring interment will be in Cedarville Cemetery.

Arrangements are in care of Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home in West Winfield.

Robert W. Foreman

WALTON — Robert W. Foreman, 88, of Walton, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, quietly at home with his loving family in attendance.

He was born the son of Robert G. and Dora Boggs Foreman on March 3l, 1913, in Bovina.

Bob lived most of his life in Walton, moving here from Bovina at the age of 4. He was raised on a dairy farm where, after helping his father milk registered Holsteins for some years, he purchased the farm on West Brook Road. Cauliflower was also a big part of his making a living, being cultivated on his Northfield farm.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the yearly trips to the north woods with his Old Hunting Gang. There were several trips West to Colorado to hunt elk and big horn sheep. He served as an officer of the Walton Co-op Fire Insurance Company and participated in the Walton Pistol Club. He was known well for his stories about his adventures and his knowledge of trappings, having had an 8-10 mile trap line until his stroke in 1996.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha (Youmans), who he married on July 9, 1938; three daughters, Phyllis Warner and Janet Hulbert of Walton and Carol (Mrs. Ivan) Bennett of Sidney Center; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Shirley Foreman of Walton; a loving and devoted care-giving granddaughter, Lauri Walley, and friend, Bob Patterson, of Walton. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Betty Foreman of Walton, Marion Foreman of Auburn, and Edith Foreman of Pittsford.

He was predeceased by four brothers Clifford, James Lester and Edward Foreman; two sons-in-law Lynn H. Warner and Carl W. Hulbert and one sister-in-law, Bernice Foreman.

Bob was a friend and good neighbor to many who will miss him and his friendly ways of making people feel welcome in his presence. May he rest in peace.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Walton United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home in Walton on Sunday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the church following the service.

Memorials, to Dollars for Scholars, c/o Walton Central School, Stockton Avenue, Walton, or to the United Presbyterian Church, 62 East St., Walton, in the name of Robert W. Foreman, are appreciated.

Doris Kenik

ONEONTA — Doris Kenik, 80, of Oneonta, died Friday Jan, 18, 2002, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Cooperstown Junction, to John and Clara (Morris) Scanlon.

She married Math Kenik on Nov. 16, 1939. Mr. Kenik died in 1992. She was a housewife and member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, James Kenik and Yvonne of Oneonta, and Michael Kenik and Joyce Adam of Davenport; four grandchildren, Krista Goins, Karen Bennett, James Kenik Jr. and Patricia Kenik, all of Oneonta; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Velma, and her husband, George Davis, of Richmondville; a brother, Gerald, and his wife, Sigma Scanlon, of Brooksville, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Maurice, Donald, Kenneth and John Scanlon; and three sisters, Mary Michaelitz, Ruth Dulkas and Virginia Scanlon.

Her funeral will be Monday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Maryland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4, when the family will be in attendance.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Cecil E. Robbins

WALTON — Cecil E. Robbins, a former Walton resident, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Catskill, N.Y., where had been residing. He was 92.

Mr. Robbins was born on Nov. 19, 1909, in Lounsbury, N.Y., to Orrin and Grace Gernert Robbins. On Dec. 10, 1941, he married Christina Rinsma in Walton. She predeceased him in 1981.

He began farming on Dunk Hill in the spring of 1942 and retired from farming in October of 1974. He then worked 10 years at the Walton Cemetery and at the William B. Ogden Free Library in Walton, retiring at age 85.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, a 50-year member of the Walton Grange, a member and 1973 Jersey Cattle Club Man of the Year and member of Walton Senior Citizens, as well as volunteer at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

Cecil E. Robbins is survived by daughters Crystal Monteverd of Freehold, N.Y., and Elaine Schaffer, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and grandchildren Jennifer, Matthew and Brian Monteverd and Katie Schaffer.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner of North and Delaware Streets in Walton, where friends may call Tuesday, Jan. 22, from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Martin, of his late church, officiating, and burial in Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the United Presbyterian Church, Walton, would be appreciated.

Susan M. Beckley

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Susan M. Beckley, 49, of Cooperstown, died Thursday evening, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on April 5, 1952, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Kenneth McShane and Virginia McShane Robinson. She married John L. Beckley on Sept. 2, 1972, in Mount Vision.

A Cooperstown native, Susan graduated from the Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1970. She devoted her life to her family and she also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, John, and her two daughters, Brenda and Barbie Beckley, all of Cooperstown; her sister, Gail A. McShane of Toddsville; her mother-in-law, Doris Beckley of Unadilla; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Myers of Valatie, Sally Smith of Blairstown, Pa., and Linda Mastroianni of Niskayuna; two aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Kenneth McShane, who died Oct. 23,1966, and her mother, Virginia McShane Robinson, who died Oct. 2, 1988.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring of this year.

Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Doris Kreck

MOUNT VISION — Doris Kreck, 77, of Mount Vision, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at her home in Mount Vision.

She was born in Morris on Aug. 19, 1924, a twin daughter of Ralph Lamb and Rosamond (Pickens) Lamb Jenner.

She married Mason L. Holbrook in 1941. Mr. Holbrook died in May 1976. She married Val Kreck on Feb. 18, 1972. They moved to Mount Vision in 1977. Here they enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing together. They also enjoyed their many travels throughout the United States and Canada.

Doris and Val were active in the American Legion in Hartwick and in Laurens. Doris and Donald Hulbert (Farmer) were honored for all their work and support in helping to make the Veterans Memorial Monument a reality at the Laurens American Legion in 2001.

Doris is survived by her husband of 29 years, Val Kreck; her mother, Rosamond Jenner, 97, of the Fox Nursing Home; and her brother, Bernald Lamb of Kennesaw, Ga.; along with two stepbrothers, Allen and Ronnie Jenner. There are two surviving daughters, Charlotte and Wayne Georgia of West Oneonta and Barbara and Roger Huggins of Norwich; two sons and a stepson, Bernald and Barbara Holbrook, and Keith and Glenna Holbrook, all of Laurens, and Randy Kreck and his companion, Heidi Schafer of Ventura,  Calif. She was also blessed with 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; along with several nieces, nephews and an aunt.

She was predeceased by her father, Ralph Lamb; stepfather, Roland Jenner; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Valentine Sr. and Emily Kreck. Her beloved twin sister, Dorothy Emerson Georgia, died on March 11, 1974.

It was Doris' request that no calling hours or funeral services be held.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Laurens Emergency Squad in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Spencer Feldmann

ONEIDA — Spencer G. Feldmann, 76, of 249 Coe Ave., died early Sunday morning, Jan. 20, 2002, in the Oneida Healthcare Center, where he had been a medical patient for the past two days.

Born in Brooklyn on Jan. 21, 1925, he was the son of George E. and Maude Stutts Feldmann.

A resident of Oneida since 1951, Mr. Feldmann was a graduate of Laurens Central School, Class of 1941, New York State Maritime College, Class of 1944, Hartwick College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949 and Syracuse University College of Law, Class of 1952. He was admitted to practice with the New York State Bar and the United States District Court in 1953.

He married Rosemary Halpin in St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet on May 8, 1949.

Mr. Feldmann was a practicing attorney, co-founding in 1958 with the late William Kiley and the late Verne Whalen, the firm of Kiley, Feldmann and Whalen, Attorneys, which is now known as the Kiley Law Firm. As a practicing attorney, he practiced general law, served as counsel to insurance companies in various defense actions, counsel to various types of businesses, and was appointed to the National Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association.

Mr. Feldmann served as trustee of the Oneida Savings Bank for many years.

He served as the Madison County district attorney from 1960 to 1974, where he instituted training seminars for local police agencies and was an instructor with the New York State Municipal Police Training Council.

Mr. Feldmann served as alderman of the Fourth Ward from 1953-1955, and president of the city of Oneida Common Council in 1955, and justice of the peace for the city, being elected in 1957.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, past chairman of the Madison County unit of the American Cancer Society, past vice chairman of the Madison County Chapter of the American Red Cross, past president of the Oneida Junior Chamber of Commerce, past vice president of the New York State Junior Chamber of Commerce, former director and secretary of the Oneida Area Industries Inc., former member of the Iroquois Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Oneida Elks Lodge No. 767 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a former member of the Oneidas Club, past member of the Oneida Greater Area Chamber of Commerce, and was recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award, Hartwick College's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1976, and the Civic Award at Colgate University.

He was a member and past president of the Madison County Bar Association, a member of the New York State and the American Bar Associations, a member of the Madison County Magistrates Association, a past member of the New York State District Attorneys Association, a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, a member of the Upstate Trial Lawyers Association, a past member and past chairman of the Committee on Professional Standards of the Sixth Judicial District.

Mr. Feldmann was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant (j.g.) in the Pacific Theater, where he participated in the invasions of the Philippine Islands and Iwo Jima.

Surviving besides his wife, Rosemary, are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Andrea and John Pontius of Oneonta, Elizabeth Barnhart of Brunswick, Maine, and Susan and Thomas Donegan of Oneida; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Spencer G. and Susan Feldmann Jr. of Manassas, Va., Robert and Teresa Feldmann of Oneida, Jeffrey and Janice Feldmann and Eric and Deborah Feldmann, all of Apex, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home Inc., 260 Main St. in Oneida, and at 10 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. William Lorenz and Deacon Elbert Niles. Interment will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., Oneida, NY 13421 or the Madison County Office of the Aging, 43 East Main St., Box 250, Morrisville, NY 13408. Envelopes for this fund may be obtained at the funeral home.

Antonio L. Sanchez

SIDNEY — Antonio L. Sanchez of Winegard Street in Sidney, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 20, 2002, at Binghamton General Hospital in Binghamton with his wife by his side.

He was born Feb. 11, 1937, in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, the son of Elby Sanchez and Maria Aponte.

On Aug. 19, 1968, he married Marlene Davis in Sidney.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Marlene Sanchez, Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Kenny Endicott of Absecon, N.J., and Lisa and Tim McCarthy of Bainbridge; four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Grace Sanchez of Atlantic City, N.J., Peter and Kristen Sanchez of Atlantic City, N.J., Adrian and Lisa Sanchez of Rochester, and Jason Sanchez of Elmira; parents, Elby and Maria of New York City; brother, Elby Sanchez Jr. of Delmar; sister, Lucy Aponte of Brooklyn; five grandchildren, Justin McCarthy, Mikayla and Andrew Sanchez, Lenny Schaffer and Cody Sanchez. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, from the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

There will be no formal calling hours.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 356 N. Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206 or to the Home Dialysis Center at Binghamton General Hospital, 10-41 Mitchell Ave., Binghamton, NY.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Buelah Bancroft

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Buelah Bancroft of Schuyler Lake died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at The Meadows.

She was born in Springfield on Aug. 31, 1919, a daughter of Victor and Anna (Werner) Galusha.

Buelah married Donald L. Bancroft on April 7, 1942. She and her family lived in the Schuyler Lake area where she devoted herself to her family, cooking and working on the family farm.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Peter Woytowich of South Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Diane Bancroft of Schuyler Lake; seven grandchildren, Ronald, Jason and Lindsay Bancroft, Peter Woytowich, Lisa Valentine, Cheryl Myers and Jodi Clark; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Helen Robinson of Richfield, Mildred Vair of Eaton and Margaret Vickerson of East Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald L. Bancroft; a son, Richard Bancroft; a granddaughter, Julie Woytowich; a great-granddaughter, Tammy Clark; a sister, Frances Beach; and two brothers, Robert and George Galusha.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring at the Schuyler Lake Cemetery in Schuyler Lake.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Robert J. Johnson

FRANKLIN — Robert J. Johnson, 75, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, after a long illness.

He was a resident of Franklin for nine years, relocating from North Harpersfield.

He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Johnson.

He resided in Franklin with his longtime companion Ann Haab.

Robert is survived by two sons, Robert Jr. of Troy and James of North Harpersfield; three daughters, Patricia Marrone of Merrick, Long Island, Debra Dieterich of North Harpersfield and Marjorie of Walton. Also surviving are five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and was a member of the Stamford VFW.

Robert was a retired New York City taxi cab and ambulance driver.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street) in Stamford. Services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, with Pastor Elliot Oakes officiating.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson in the spring.

Donations may be made in his name to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Peter E. Tophoven

EDMESTON — Peter E. Tophoven, 61, of Edmeston, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002.

He was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Leonardsville, the son of Emile and M. Lousie (Henkes) Tophoven.

He married Linda M. Crossman on Jan. 6, 1962, at the Church of the Nativity, Edmeston.

Peter was currently employed by the Mount Markham school district as a bus driver, and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Peter had a very dry sense of humor, and he loved working outdoors, farming and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his children, Timothy Tophoven and his wife, Belle, Tamara Tophoven, Wesley Tophoven and his wife, Kimberly, and Rebecca Tophoven; his grandchildren, Thomas, Suellyn and DeVon; his father, Emile; his brother and sister in law, Anthony and Ida Mae Tophoven.

He was predeceased by his mother, Lousie.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at noon at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Henderson officiating. Calling hours are one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Peter's name to the Edmeston Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the church.

Arrangements are by Houk Johnston Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
