Robert Heffner

ONEONTA — The Rev. Dr. Robert Earl Heffner died Jan. 19, 2002, at Oneonta Nursing Home, after a four year struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

An active presence in the Oneonta community for almost 40 years, Heffner served Hartwick College, first as chaplain, and eventually as dean of student services, until his retirement in 1989.

An ordained Lutheran minister, Heffner was an active supply preacher at churches throughout upstate New York. From 1972 to 1991, he served as stated supply pastor of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens, helping to grow that congregation and spur a successful building expansion. He also served as interim pastor at Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta for several brief periods.

Born May 25, 1927, in Buffalo, Heffner graduated from Hartwick College in 1948. He attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa., and was ordained in 1952.

As a full-time pastor he served Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Mount Kisco, and First English Lutheran Church in Lockport, before coming to Hartwick College as chaplain in 1963.

Throughout his adult life, Heffner was active in many professional, church and service organizations.

In 1993, Heffner received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Hartwick College in recognition of his spiritual and administrative leadership.

A vivacious and loving family man, Heffner is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan (Wetlesen), of Oneonta; four children and their spouses, C. William and Mary Heffner of Ithaca, John Mark and Claudette Heffner of San Diego,  Calif., Laurie and Lauron Lewis of Katonah and Steven and Mary Heffner of New York City; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Vantine of Buffalo; and a brother, Bill and Marge Heffner of Dayton, Ohio.

Calling hours at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, will be Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at 3 p.m. Clergy are invited to robe.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Laurens, NY 13796 or to Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Edwin H. Hunt

OTEGO — Edwin H. Hunt, 80, of Otego, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born March 20, 1921, in Delhi, the son of Harry Peter Hunt and Louise S. (Loucks) Hunt.

He married the former Mary Miller on Sept. 16, 1942, in New York City. She survives him.

Ed was a lifelong area resident of Otego.

During his working years he worked for the D&H railroad and had been a mechanic working for Bob Oliver at his Studebaker dealership in Oneonta and later at Fendicks Chrysler in Sidney.

Ed served as a corporal for the U.S. Army at West Point during World War II. While serving in the Army he played for the all star basketball team at West Point in 1941.

He was a member of the Otego Presbyterian Church and a member of the Otego Fire Department for more than 50 years.

Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and basketball.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Hunt, of Otego; a daughter, Sara Ann Hunt, of Otego; two sons, Edwin H. Hunt Jr. and his wife, Christel, of Colonial Heights, Va., and John David Hunt of Otego; one sister, Eleanor S. Utter, of Florida; one uncle and aunt, Ralph and Jeannette Hunt, of Delhi; a grandson and his wife, Patrick D. and Rose Hunt, and their daughter, Heather, of Virginia; and a nephew, Wayne Utter, and niece, Sue Lynn Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, before the service when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Otego Fire Department, River Street, Otego, NY 13825 in memory of Edwin H. Hunt.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Clyde E. McLean

HARTWICK — Mr. Clyde E. (Chub) McLean, 75, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Cooperstown on May 11, 1926, a son of Willard and Ella (Southworth) McLean.

Chub attended Edmeston Central School.

He married Elaine Fish on Aug. 2, 1947.

He worked his family farm for 20 years and did some logging as well. He was also a machine operator for the town of Burlington.

Chub was a former member of the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club, the Hartwick Veterans Club and a member of the Otsego Ramblers Country and Western Band.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a musician as well. He played the mandolin, fiddle and the harmonica. He also enjoyed clog dancing.

Chub will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as a person who enjoyed life to its fullest.

Chub is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elaine, of Hartwick; four daughters, Linda and Frank Wenz of Burlington, Carol and Buck Hoover of West Winfield, Sandra Laymon and her friend, Waters, of Brooklyn and June and Richard Dolhun of Richfield Springs; two sons, Martin and Joan McLean of Hartwick and Timothy McLean and his fiance, Janet Preston, of Hartwick; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer and Larry Truax Jr., Frank Wenz IV, Tammy and David Browning, Michael and Heather Hoover, Robert Hoover, Melissa Beach, Lisa McLean, Chad and Holly McLean, Cory Laymon and Donald Mitchell Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Erma Hughes of Oneonta, Beulah Osborn of Burlington Flats, Edna Ruland of Binghamton, Betty Crockford of Ithaca, Columbine and Louis Oblak of Hartwick, Gladys and Harold Scrivener of New Berlin, Alberta Eastman of Freeville, Albeama and Kenneth Gaborsek of Fly Creek and Marjorie and Ralph Snyder of Fuguay-Varina, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Dorothy McLean, of Hartwick; and many close nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Nelson, Kenneth, Lyle, Norman and Leonard McLean; and a sister, Wanda Stewart.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Burial will be in the spring.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Margaret Stafford

MORRIS — Margaret Austin Stafford, 86, of Morris, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born in Greensboro, N.C., on Feb. 3, 1915, the daughter of Arthur L. Austin and Elizabeth Albright Rose Austin.

She married Richard Bradt Stafford in Arlington, N.J., on June 22, 1935. He died May 31, 1975.

She was a resident of Morris for more than 65 years and had formerly lived in Southern Pines, N.C., Knoxville, Tenn., and Arlington, N.J.

Peg had worked for the Gabriel Harris Jewelers of Oneonta for many years.

She was a very active member of the Morris Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard B. Stafford Jr. of Baldwinsville and Peter Stafford of Morris; and seven grandchildren including, Scott Stafford of Durham, N.C., Heather Stafford of Fuquay'Varna, N.C., Jennifer of Redondo Beach,  Calif., Holly Stafford of San Francisco,  Calif., Peter Stafford II of North Brookfield, Mass., Kimberly Wilkerson of Little Elm,  Texas, and Mark Page of Garland,  Texas. She is also survived by three great-granddaughters, Paige Wilkerson of Little Elm,  Texas, Sarah Page of Garland,  Texas, and Colleen Stafford of North Brookfield, Mass. A sister, Virginia Lull, also survives her.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Virginia Stafford Page; and a brother, John Austin.

Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris and funeral services will be on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Morris Baptist Church in Morris, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund, dear friend and former pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to either the Morris Baptist Church or the Morris Emergency Squad in Peg's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Warren Whitbeck

FRANKLIN — Warren Lavern Whitbeck, 86, of Franklin, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at the residence of his son in Oneonta.

He was born at home in Franklin on June 1, 1915, the son of Walter S. and Mary E. (Sanford) Whitbeck.

He married S. Elizabeth Wilsey on Aug. 14, 1937, in Franklin. She died on May 7, 1998, after 60 years of marriage.

He was a member of the West Delhi Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his sons and their wives, Walter L. and Sharon Whitbeck of Endwell, Larry and Marcia Whitbeck of Oneonta and Rudy and Loretta Whitbeck of Franklin; his grandchildren, Julie Hammond, Kathy Gosney, Scott and Marlene Whitbeck of Binghamton, Stacia Whitbeck, Chad and Jennifer Whitbeck of McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, and Sarah Whitbeck and Janel Whitbeck, both presently of Franklin. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and another expected soon.

He was predeceased by two sons, Timothy and Arnold.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Eva Carter officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Delhi Presbyterian Church, RD #1 Box 352, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Mary Jean Morse

JUPITER, Fla. — Mary Jean (Case) Morse, 84, beloved wife of Harrison Morse of Roxbury, N.Y., passed away at Jupiter Medical Center, Jupiter, Fla., on Jan. 20, 2002.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1917, in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Edwin C. Case and Margaret Beattie Case.

She married Harrison C. Morse on Oct. 22, 1937.

She is survived by her husband; children, Patricia Straehley (Terry) of Santa Barbara,  Calif., Nancy Haring (David) of Portage, Mich.; and Carol Wilson (Robert) of Roxbury; grandchildren, Stephen Straehley, Kristen Veros, David Straehley, Barbara Straehley, Susan Steel, Kari Shankland, Pamela Johnston, Christine Wilson, Robert Wilson Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Isabelle Marinelli and Louise Smale; and brother, Jack Case.

Mary Jean graduated from Roxbury Central School.

Her interests included her grandchildren, gardening, flower arranging, bridge and reading.

A memorial service will be held at the Roxbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Goeckel, pastor, officiating, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roxbury United Methodist Church, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Margaret Stafford

MORRIS — Margaret Austin Stafford, 86, of Morris, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Dorothy M. Adler

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Dorothy M. Adler, 70, passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, with her family by her side.

She was born April 19, 1931, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Carl and Norma (Beck) Boos.

Dot married Robert A. Adler on March 8, 1953, at the Bellmore Methodist Church on Long Island.

She and her husband bought property in Charlotteville in 1986. Together they built their cabin and moved in permanently in 1991. Immediately she became active in the community. She was the Charlotteville Fire Department Commissioner from 1997 to present. She was a founding member of the Schoolhouse Restoration Committee and was the recording secretary. She was also was one of the founders of the Charlotteville Annual Old Home Day Celebration, and was a member of the Summit Senior Citizens and the Schenevus Young at Heart.

She was affectionately known as Nana or Dot and was a very generous person who was loved by all who knew her.

Dot is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert Adler; her daughter, Linda (Adler), and her husband, Albert Bertos; two sons, Warren, and his wife, Christina Adler, and Arthur and his wife, Colleen Adler; her three brothers, Carl, Norman and Robert Boos; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and numerous other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents and her daughter, Donna Jean Linton.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Charlotteville Fire House.

There will he no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Dot to the Charlotteville Fire Department or the Charlotteville Schoolhouse Restoration Committee.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.
