Charles Norton

COLUMBUS — Charles Howard Norton, 93, of the town of Columbus, passed away Jan. 21, 2002, in Cobleskill.

He was born Jan. 5, 1909, in the town of Columbus, the son of Walter and Minnie (Westmoreland) Norton.

He married Alta W. Whitacre on April 15, 1933, in Unadilla Forks. She predeceased him July 3, 1988.

He spent his childhood in the town of Columbus area.

He was a graduate of New Berlin Central School and attended an accelerated-ag course for one year in 1928.

He was a dairy farmer in the town of Columbus.

He was on the Town Board of Columbus for many years.

He was a member of the Columbus Community Church, town of Columbus.

He loved to play baseball and watch his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Josephine) Kaiser, Wells River, Vt., and Mrs. Frank (Janet) Masterson, Sharon Springs; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one cousin, Dorothy Hammond.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Columbus Community Church, town of Columbus, with the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church officiating.

Interment will be in the Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Gaston Pelletier

BOVINA CENTER — Gaston (Gus) Pelletier, 68, of Bovina Center, died peacefully at his home on Jan. 21, 2002, surrounded by his family, after a six-month battle with renal cell cancer.

Teacher, writer and musician, Gus was a man of diverse interests and talents.

He was a beloved husband, father and mentor, not only to his extended family, but also to a broad circle of friends and students whom he touched with his insight, humor and counsel.

Gus was born Joseph Jean Louis Gaston Francois Pelletier in Cohoes on Aug. 14, 1933, the son of Charles and Anita Pelletier.

He married Janet (Jan) Hurley in 1954. They celebrated their 47th anniversary this past July.

Gus graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, where he played varsity basketball. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Siena College and received his doctorate in English from the State University at Albany.

He began his teaching career at Stillwater High School. In 1964, he joined the English Department at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, where he taught a variety of courses, including writing, fiction, poetry and film until his retirement in 1994.

He received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1980. He was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the University of North Carolina in 1980-81, and a visiting scholar at Yale University in 1982, and Cornell University in 1986.

Gus was a widely published poet. His work appeared in many anthologies and journals, including "Our Mothers, Our Selves;" "Notre Dame Review;" "Kentucky Poetry Review;" "Maryland Review" and "Poet & Critic."

He was an accomplished pianist and a lifelong devotee of many types of music, especially blues. He was a great sports fan, particularly of the University of North Carolina basketball team and the New York Yankees.

Gus was an active traveler. He cherished his extensive correspondence with friends, family and former students. He enjoyed working on carpentry and other household projects.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church.

Gus is survived by his wife, Jan; their nine children and their spouses, Steve and Janet of Rockville, Md., Mark and Mary Anne of Brandon, Vt., Matt of Altamont, Dan and Sarah of Chapel Hill, N.C., Andy and Erin of Altamont, John of Bovina Center, Joe and Becky of Cambridge, Mass., Mary and James of Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Christine and Jim of Somerville, Mass.; and eight grandchildren, Adam, David, Heather, Elizabeth, Will, Julia, Evan and Sophie.

Gus is also survived by his sisters, Diane Howe of Niskayuna and Doris Spencer of Ballston Spa; a sister- and brother-in-law, Mary Ellyn and Mike Bach of Albany; a brother-in-law, Thomas Hurley of Oakland,  Calif.; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's in Delhi on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James McDevitt and the Rev. Edward Ryan, co-celebrants, officiating, and Mr. Thomas O'Connell will deliver the homily. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be in the spring at the Bovina Cemetery.

Those who wish may send contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown or the Bovina Center Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Joseph J. Sarnelle

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Joseph J. Sarnelle, 74, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born March 21, 1927, in Brooklyn, the son of Joseph and Anna (Sepe) Sarnelle.

On March 27, 1989, he married Delores Nichols in Oneonta. She survives.

Mr. Sarnelle served in the U.S. Army from 1945-47.

He was assistant supervisor for New York City Transit Authority.

He lived in the Cherry Valley area for 15 years.

He was a member of the Schoharie County Woodchippers (carving club) and St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley.

Survivors besides his wife, Delores Sarnelle, of Cherry Valley, include his mother, Anna Sarnelle of Hazlet, N.J.; a daughter, Geraldine, and her husband, Dominic Aliventi, of Longwood, Fla.; a son, Robert and his wife, Ann Sarnelle of Lake Mary, Fla.; stepsons, Matthew Morrell of Longwood, Fla., and Patrick Morrell of Coram; a sister, Irene Pisani of East Northport; brothers, Alphonse Sarnelle of East Northport, and Anthony Sarnelle of Brooklyn; and three grandchildren, Joie Aliventi, Elizabeth Sarnelle and James Sarnelle.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Herman A. Prime

FORT PLAIN — Mr. Herman A. Prime, 93, of Timmerman Avenue, St. Johnsville, passed away Monday evening, Jan. 21, 2002, at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born April 6, 1908, in Minden, the son of William Prime and Edna Nestle Prime.

Mr. Prime was educated at the former Salt Springville Country School.

Mr. Prime was the owner, proprietor, car salesman and mechanic of Herman A. Prime Garage Inc., in Fort Plain, from 1956 to 1987. He retired in 1987.

He lived in St. Johnsville since November 2001. He had lived in Fort Plain and spent summers at camp in Otsego County.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain.

He was the former treasurer of Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department and a member since 1938. He was a member of local area coin clubs for many years.

He married Evelyn Mowers Prime on July 6, 1928, in Minden. She predeceased him on Feb. 20, 1980.

He was also predeceased by four brothers, Sidney, Howard, Emery and William Prime, and one sister, Ethel Burns.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Derelene and Harry Peplinski of Cooperstown; one son, Loren F. Prime of Fort Plain; two sisters, Marion Cook and Mabel Cool, both of Fort Plain; one brother, Merritt Prime of Canajoharie; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 374, Fort Plain or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 36 Lydius St., Fort Plain NY 13339.

Funeral arrangements are by the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Fort Plain.

Frances M. Bishop

POTSDAM — Frances M. Bishop, 96, passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Messena Hospital.

She was born July 5, 1905, in Irwin, Pa., the daughter of John and Frances (Pozes) Mostar.

She married Howard Bishop on May 12, 1926, in Cobleskill. He predeceased her in 1972.

In 1919, she moved to East Worcester and attended the East Worcester High School.

She was employed by General Electric in Schenectady for one year during World War II.

Mrs. Bishop moved to Potsdam in February of 1999.

She was a member of the East Worcester United Methodist Church, attended the Worcester United Methodist Church, and was a member of the United Methodist Women's Club.

Mrs. Bishop was a good mother and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Sherman of Ruskin, Fla., Bette and her husband, Pat Frassa, of Mesa, Ariz., and Peggy and her husband, Don Burlingame, of Potsdam; a son, J. William Bishop of Worcester; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Bishop was cremated and a graveside service will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Bishop to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, the Worcester United Methodist Church, Main Street, Worcester, NY 12197 or the East Worcester United Methodist Church, East Worcester, NY 12064.

Mary Jean Morse

JUPITER, Fla. — Mary Jean (Case) Morse, 84, beloved wife of Harrison Morse of Roxbury, N.Y., passed away at Jupiter Medical Center, Jupiter, Fla., on Jan. 20, 2002.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1917, in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Edwin C. Case and Margaret Beattie Case.

She married Harrison C. Morse on Oct. 22, 1937.

She is survived by her husband; children, Patricia Straehley (Terry) of Santa Barbara,  Calif., Nancy Haring (David) of Portage, Mich.; and Carol Wilson (Robert) of Roxbury; grandchildren, Stephen Straehley, Kristen Veros, David Straehley, Barbara Straehley, Susan Steel, Kari Shankland, Pamela Johnston, Christine Wilson, Robert Wilson Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Isabelle Marinelli and Louise Smale; and brother, Jack Case.

Mary Jean graduated from Roxbury Central School.

Her interests included her grandchildren, gardening, flower arranging, bridge and reading.

A memorial service will be held at the Roxbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Goeckel, pastor officiating, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roxbury United Methodist Church, Roxbury, NY 12474.

Paul J. DuBois

UTICA — Paul J. DuBois of the Masonic Home in Utica, and formerly of Whitesboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Home.

He was born Jan. 25, 1908, son of James and Ina (Bracy) DuBois, in Oswego.

Mr. DuBois was a graduate of Oswego High School and Oswego State Normal School (now SUNY Oswego).

He was at one time employed at the YMCA and the Binghamton Gas Co. (Columbia Gas & Electric Co.), both in Binghamton.

In 1942, he relocated with his family to Unadilla, where he was employed by Bendix Aviation Corp. of Sidney.

In 1950, he and his family moved to New Hartford, and he was successively employed by Divine Brothers Co., Moser & Cotins Advertising Agency which became affiliated with The Rumrill Agency, Rochester, MacFarland Associates Advertising Agency and Dodge-Graphic Press, all in Utica.

He had been a member of First United Methodist Church of New Hartford for 52 years where he was active on many committees and sang with the church choir for 37 years.

He became a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartets Singing in America Inc. (SPEBSQSA), maintaining his affiliation throughout his life. He was director of the chorus, Crimson Chords for a number of years. In addition, he was a longtime member of Freedom Lodge No. 324 F&AM, Unadilla.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, P. Elliott and Patricia DuBois of Maryland, and a daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Stephan Butler, of Marcy. Surviving him also are two sisters, Vivian Hibbard of Saginaw, Mich., and Reta Wallace of Minetto; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Imogene, in February of 1989, after a loving marriage of 57 years; and his brother, Carl DuBois.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in New Hartford on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.

Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Albertine Brand

HALCOTT CENTER — Albertine Streeter Brand, 90, of Elk Creek Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Benedictine Hospital.

She was a native and lifelong area resident. Many years ago, she was a hospital lab technician for the U.S. military.

She was a member of the I.O.O.B.

Mrs. Brand was born Nov. 17, 1911, in Halcott Center, daughter of the late Ward and Bertha Hallenbeck Streeter.

She married Harold Brand in 1947.

In addition to Mr. Harold Brand, survivors include two sisters, Shirley Streeter Finch of Halcott Center and Virginia Streeter Sanford of Surfside Beach, S.C.; and a brother, Virgil Streeter of Halcott Center.

She was predeceased by Smith Streeter, Kenneth Streeter, Neva Streeter  Johnson and Alberta Streeter.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Brand will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia.

Spring interment will be in Bedell Cemetery.

Friends will be received Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Conrad Wirtz

STAMFORD — Conrad Wirtz, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Born in Stamford, Conrad was the son of Gustav and Merle (Reynolds) Wirtz.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and was a retired meat cutter formerly employed by Victory Markets in Stamford.

A member of the Stamford VFW, he enjoyed nature and was an avid fisherman, hunter, trapper and skier. As a skier, he was a member of the Ski Patrol at Scotch Valley Ski Area in Stamford and a member of the 70-plus Ski Club.

Conrad is survived by his wife, Marjorie Herman; and three daughters and their husbands, Jean and Edward Wroblewski of Kingston, Barbara and Fred Knott of Oneonta, and Diane and Gary Dean of Houston,  Texas. Also surviving are two grandchildren and nieces.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mary Cuyle of Rochester.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held in the spring at the Stamford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
