Arthur J. Bouvier

OXFORD — Arthur J, Bouvier, 85, of Oxford passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Facility in Norwich.

He was born July 5, 1916, son of the late Alfred and Eva Wood Bouvier in Malone, N.Y.

Art married Lillian Besley on March 8, 1941, in Sidney.

He was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney and retired as a foreman in 1976. Art also drove school bus for the Unadilla Central School District. He coached in the Unadilla Little League and was also a volunteer firefighter in Unadilla.

Mr. Bouvier was a past member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club and the Sidney Elks Lodge. He loved to read was an avid gardener and bowler.

He is survived by his wife Lillian Bouvier, of Oxford; a son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Linda Bouvier, of Milford, Conn., three daughters and sons-in-law Michele and Ken Newton, of Santa Clarita,  Calif., Nicole Shaver, of Oxford, Jacqueline Bouvier and John Pardee, of Sidney, N.Y.; two grandchildren Geoffrey Bouvier, of San Diego,  Calif., Courtenay Bouvier, of Iowa; a sister and brother-in-law Bertha and Patrick Donnelly of Florida.

He is predeceased by one brother and two sisters.

Memorial services will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Lola Lee Schrom

WESTFORD — Lola Lee Schrom, 49, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 24, 1952, in Albany, the daughter of Harvey and M. Margaret (Parker) Schrom.

She married David C. Mould on April 11, 1970.

Lola worked for several years at The Meadows as a nurse's aide. She enjoyed helping people and had a keen sense of humor. She was a kind and caring person who loved all animals, especially horses. Lola was very proud of her American Indian collection and heritage.

She is survived by her life-long companion David C. Mould Sr. of Westford; her children Charles M. III and Cathy Mould of West Davenport, David C. II and Bonnie Mould of Enfield, Conn., Alfred E. Mould Sr. and Anita Seals of Westford, Lonetta and Michael Tooley of Maryland; grandchildren Nicholas, Timothy, A.J., Christopher David and Janet Sylvia; her mother M. Margaret Barton of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; brothers and sisters Gloria and John Munson of Maryland, Harvey and Lynda Schrom of Glendale, Ore., Golda Mae Duncan of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Johanna VanDenBerg of Maryland, Freda Koncelik of Westford, Mary Evelyn and Tony Loehr of Maryland, Bridget and Jerry DeGruchy of Maryland, Burton Barton Jr. of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Elaine Irene and Jim Gaylor of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Harvey Schrom.

Calling hours are Friday, Feb. 1, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Westford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Burke, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Westford Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Lola to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 Co. Hwy. 34, Schenevus, NY 12155, Westford First Responders, PO Box 187, Westford, NY 13488 or the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals, Hyde Park, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Wanda Churchill

STAMFORD — Wanda Churchill, 68, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. She was a lifelong area resident and was predeceased by her loving husband Glenn.

Wanda is survived by her mother Dorothy Clapper of Delhi; four children, Alan (Lynn) Churchill, of Schenectady, Ginny (Jim Rogers) Austin of Stamford, Carolyn (Michael) Hillis of Hobart, Ralph Churchill of Stamford; and a sister Marion Lewicke, of  Jefferson. Also surviving are five grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call today, Friday Feb. 1, at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street) Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Richard Alders officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Mary Jane Effner

DELHI — Mary Jane Effner, 58, of Delhi, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 22, 1943, in Oneonta, the daughter of Roy and Rose (Decker) Goodspeed.

She married Stephen W. Effner on July 1, 1961, who survives her.

Mary was a homemaker and was a lifelong area resident. The biggest joy in her life was her family. Her grandchildren were what gave her sunshine every day.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Stephen Effner of Delhi; son and daughter-in-law LeRoy and Sebrena Effner of Delhi; daughter and her special friend Michele Effner and Pete Halterman of Hamden; seven grandchildren who she adored, David Smith, William Effner, Stephen Scott Courtney Doenges, Christin Doenges, Frank Coss Jr., and Shakari Coss; four brothers and their wives, Harry and Dot Goodspeed, Robert and Ann Goodspeed, Douglas and Sandy Goodspeed and Ernie and Madeline Goodspeed; two sisters and their husbands, Arlene and Marvin Oakley and Vivian and Robert Brown; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Chris and Russ Sperry, Butch and Wendy Effner, Alan and Betty Wamsley, Marie and Paul Koerner, Pat Hodge and Nancy Goodspeed. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers Roy Goodspeed and Bill Oliver.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, N.Y. in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., New York Mills, NY 13417 in memory of Mary Jane Effner.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Alan J. Emerson

OTEGO — Alan Jay Emerson, 48, of Otego, died Thursday morning, Jan. 31, 2002, at his residence.

He was born July 29, 1953, in Oneonta the son of Glenn Russel and Esther (Harris) Emerson.

He married Sharon Dillenbeck on July 4, 1974.

Alan is survived by his wife Sharon; two daughters Lisa and Carrie; his mother Esther; four brothers Russel, Lee, Dana, and Arthur; an aunt Dorothy Kent; and an uncle and aunt Edwin and Dorothy Harris.

Alan was predeceased by his father Glenn and sister Catherine.

At the request of Alan, there will be no funeral services or calling hours. He will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Otego Fire Department, River Street, Otego, NY 13825, in memory of Alan Jay Emerson.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Helen M. Houck

FRANKLIN — Helen M. Houck, 75, of Franklin passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born April 1, 1926, in Tylers Switch, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Geneveve (Dean) Rhinebeck.

Helen retired from Amphenol in 1988. She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, as well as the Legions Women's Auxiliary for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and watching her family grow.

Helen married her husband Willmott on March 19, 1945, in Otego.

Helen is survived by her husband, Willmott of Franklin; four children, Peggy French of Franklin, Anna and Henry Davis of Blanchester, Ohio, Everett and Debbie Houck of Lavaca, Ark., and David Houck of Franklin; seven grandchildren, Rebecca and Alfred Hotaling, Natalie, and Craig Houck, Janel Cox, Amanda Staruchowicz and Brian Mettler, Dawn Houck, and McKensie Cullipher; as well as four great-grandchildren, Chase and Dana Hotaling, Abigail Staruchowicz, and Elijah Houck and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen is also survived by four brothers, Everett and Shirley Rhinebeck of Hancock, John and Diane Rhinebeck of Hancock, Melvin and Kay Rhinebeck of Binghamton, and Harold and Pearl Rhinebeck of Cleveland, Tenn.

She was predeceased by a daughter Kathy and by a sister Clara Griener. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Franklin with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Raymond Shackelton

TREADWELL —Raymond Shackelton, 59, of Treadwell, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 30, 2002, at home with his loving family and friends by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 24, 1942, in Bainbridge, the son of John and Elizabeth (Cummings) Shackelton.

He married Joan Scheiner on Oct. 3, 1966, in Treadwell.

Ray served four years in the United States Air Force. After 20 years of driving tractor-trailer, Ray retired from the Dellwood Dairy Group. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Delaware County Highway Department. He was also a part-time bus driver for Eastern Travel of Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, Ray was a member of the Treadwell United Methodist Church as well as the Teamsters Union Local 338 and the CSEA Union.

Ray will be remembered for his limitless sense of' humor, his quiet courage and compassion and his devotion to his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years Joan Shackelton of Treadwell; his mother Elizabeth Shackelton of DeBary, Fla.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Shackelton of Troy, N.Y. and Michelle and Eric Schwenzfeier of Clifton Park, N.Y.; his two treasured grandchildren Noah and Sophie; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bette and Donald Hall of DeBary, Fla., and Bonnie and Richard Keech of DeBary, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Jetta Shackelton of Treadwell; and several nieces and nephews.

Ray was predeceased by his father John in 1984.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta with Richard Scheiner, his brother-in-law presiding,.

Burial will be in the spring in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home at which time the family will be in attendance.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in loving memory of Raymond Shackelton.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ruth S. Musson

GILBERTSVILLE — Ruth S. Musson, 93, of Home Acres in Gilbertsville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Harding Nursing home in Waterville.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ruth's memorial service today, Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, at 19 Marion Ave. (Route 51) in Gilbertsville, with Dr. Rev. Donald Boardman officiating. Ruth's family will receive friends at the conclusion of the service.

She was born June 15, 1908, in Norwich, N.Y. She was the daughter of the late Crosby J. and Ruth Jaynes Smith and received her education in Norwich, graduating with the Class of 1925. She furthered her education at Albany Teachers College, where she graduated in 1929. Ruth began her teaching career in Morris, N.Y., where she taught Latin and French until 1940.

Ruth was married to A.B. Musson on Oct. 19, 1940, in the Episcopal Church in Norwich. She moved to Home Acres and soon left the teaching profession to raise her children, but later resumed it as a substitute teacher in area schools.

A.B. passed away on Sept. 30, 1999, after a loving union of 59 years.

Ruth's memberships include the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, where she taught Sunday school and was active for many years. Ruth was also a member of the Tianderah Chapter of the DAR, having served as its corresponding secretary. She was also a member of the Girl Scout Council.

In addition to being a most-dedicated wife and mother, Ruth was a gentle person whose love, selfless, devotion and courage have been a constant source of strength and support to her family. They will miss her deeply and remember her with smiles, well-deserved respect and much fondness.

Ruth is survived by her loving family of three daughters and a son and their families, Martha (Marty) and Carl Gus of Sauquoit, N.Y., and their two children, Michael Gus and Tammy and Carl Kilborne; Dorothy Reed of Kansas City, Mo., and her son, Dana; Molly and Chuck Hall of Hamilton, N.Y., and their four children Heather, Dan, Travis and Sarah; and Scott and Anne Musson of  White River Junction, Vt., and their three children Ben, Sam and Will; a sister-in-law, Bobbie Musson; a nephew, Bill Musson; nieces, Robbie (Musson) Corcoran, Andrea (Smith) Buer, Betsy Smith, Mary Jane Schaeffer and Anne Kellogg; cousins, John and Winifred Smith and Rosalyn Jaynes Staeuble and family.

Ruth was predeceased by her brother Andres in 1997.

Donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the Gilbertsville Free Library or the Major's Inn Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service or donations may be mailed to Martha Gus at 3061 Oneida St., Sauquoit, NY 13456.

Ruth's family extends their heartfelt appreciation to their mother's caregivers, Pat, Ginnah, Madeleine and Judy, and to the entire staff at the Harding Nursing Home for their exceptional and compassionate care and dedication.

Arrangements are with the J. Donald Smith Funeral Home in Sauquoit.

James V. Shannon

HARTWICK — James Vincent Shannon, 77, of Park Avenue in Hartwick, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on May 26, 1924, in the Bronx, a son of James and Alice (Herlihy) Anglin.

He married Eileen Mary Beall on Nov. 14, 1954, in Patchogue. Mrs. Shannon died on Nov. 9, 1983.

Raised and educated in the New York City area, Jim served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He then attended Farmingdale Tech and graduated with a degree in engineering. For 47 years he was employed by National Cash Register as an area representative and was well-respected for his skills in repairing all makes and models of cash registers, both old and new. Jim was also a master craftsman in the area of refinishing furniture, a hobby he greatly enjoyed in his retirement.

A resident of Hartwick for the past 40 years, the highlight of Jim's day for many years was having breakfast with his friends at Laura's Restaurant and Coffee Shop (now Brooks' Country Kitchen). He was a member of the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567, as well as a former member of the Lions Club of Cooperstown. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Kennebunkport, Maine, where he and his wife shared many happy memories.

Jim is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Sharon S. and Stanley Silber of Davenport, Mary E. and Brady Howells of Modesto,  Calif., Nora A. Shannon of Binghamton, Margaret Shannon of Saranac Lake and Chester Winslow III of Schuylerville; nine grandchildren, Brett Decker, Hannah and Leandra Howells, Michael and Chester Winslow, Kathy Hribar, Liz Rose, Susan Phillippe and Gary Shove Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sister Alice Shannon of the John F. Kennedy Convent in Somers, N.Y., and Mrs. Ruth Smith of San Diego,  Calif.; and two nieces.

He was predeceased by four children, James V. Shannon Jr., who died in 1960; Linda Shannon, who died in 1983; Edward J. Shannon, who died in 1986; and Dorothy A. Winslow, who died in 1998; and a great-grandson Matthew Hribar, who died in 1994.

The Office of the Burial of the Dead will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick NY 13348.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Mildred D. Weaver

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Mildred Darlene Weaver went into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Matthews, N.C.

She was born March 28, 1923, daughter of the late Harry and Nellie Bevil in Charleston, S.C.

Mildred married Arthur F. Weaver on Sept. 12, 1942. He predeceased her on Nov. 17, 1981.

Mrs. Weaver will be remembered for her love for her Lord and her service to him. She served him as a pastor's wife at the Sidney Center Baptist Church, the Bible Baptist Church in Bangor, Maine, and the Kemptville and Carleton Baptist churches in Nova Scotia.

Mildred loved children and served many years in Sunday school, vacation Bible school and Bible classes.

Mildred raised 14 children and at the age of 57, returned to school and earned her degree in elementary education. She taught in Vermont and Virginia for several years. Mrs. Weaver had been living with her son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Melissa Weaver in Matthews, N.C., where she continued to teach Sunday school and home schooled her grandchildren.

Mrs. Weaver is survived by 13 children and their families, Carol and Neso Wessels, Martha and Daniel Phillips, Dr. Paul and Esther Weaver, David and Linda Weaver, Stephen Weaver, Daniel and Edith Weaver, Esther and Alfred Riewerts, James and Patricia Weaver, Michael Weaver, Deborah Weaver, Melody and Al Lewis, Jonathan and Melissa Weaver and Rachel and Kevin Bassett; a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Bill Petty; and two brothers, Larry and June Bevil and Dale Bevil.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrea Bentley, Gregg and Spencer Pinney, Daniel and Jonathan Phillips, Andrew, Mickey, Marcus, Tory, Matthew, Eve, Marcie, Jessie and William Weaver, Joshua and Adam Riewerts, John, David, Rachel, Seth, and Jared Weaver, Shannon Lasell, Christopher Lewis, Amanda and Scott Bassett, Nicholas Panchy and Jonathan, Abigail and Caleb Weaver; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Panchy.

A celebration of Mildred's life and service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Circle Drive Alliance Church in Sidney, N.Y. The family will receive loved ones and friends at 1 p.m., before the service.

Interment will be in Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center in the spring.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., at 21 Main St. in Sidney.
