Rick D. Schmitz Jr.

FRANKLIN — Rick D. Schmitz Jr., 24, of Franklin, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Old Forge.

He was born Jan. 23, 1978, in Atlanta, Ga., the son of Rick Sr. and Lisa (Nolan) Schmitz.

He was a graduate of Unatego Central School, Class of 1996, where he participated and excelled in football, basketball and baseball.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.

He was employed as a tree surgeon for K.W. Reese, Inc., of Mercersburg, Pa.

Rick is survived by his parents, Rick and Lisa Schmitz of Franklin; his sisters and a brother-in-law, Sheila and John Nolan of Wells Bridge, and Stacey Schmitz of Franklin; his brother, Craig Schmitz of Franklin; his maternal grandfather, Ronald Nolan of Unadilla; his paternal grandmother, Marjorie Schmitz of Otego; his very special friend, Jackie Hurtubise; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Lois Nolan; and his paternal grandfather, Clarence Schmitz Jr.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Cremation will follow at Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, Feb. 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unatego Central School, care of Roger Brown, 2641 State Highway 7, Otego, NY 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Henry Zaluski

LINCOLN, Rhode Island — Henry Zaluski, 84, died Jan. 23, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, R.I.

He was the husband of the late Mary T. (Mullen) Zaluski.

He was born in New York City, a son of the late Charles and Julia (Pouhach) Zaluski.

He retired to Lincoln, R.I., and had lived there for the last six years.

Mr. Zaluski was an electrician at Medical Coaches for 28 years before he retired in 1991.

Hank leaves four daughters, Sarah M. Gray of Lincoln, R.I., Diane Levy of Maryland, N.Y., Barbara Schulman of Claremont,  Calif., and Genevieve Wittenbach of Lebanon, Ohio; three sons, John Cullen of Long Lake, N.Y., Paul Zaluski of College Point, R.I., and Louis Maddaloni in Ireland; a brother, Alfred P. Zaluski of Warrenton, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Any remembrances in Hank's name can be sent to Deacon Dan NezMartin for the Southwest Indian Foundation, P.O. Box 86, Gallup, NM 87302-0001.

The funeral service was at the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home in Cumberland, R.I.

Robert H. Harrison

WEST ONEONTA — Robert H. Harrison, 71, of West Oneonta, died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born Dec. 16, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of James and Mamie (Burgess) Harrison.

He married the former Thelma Loucks on Feb. 24, 1952, who survives him.

Bob was raised and grew up in New Lisbon.

He had worked for the D&H Railroad at one time before starting his career in farming. In 1952 he started farming in West Burlington until he moved to West Oneonta in 1958, where he started the Harrison Farm, which he owned and operated.

He was a member of the Morris Baptist Church where he attended services in his early years. He was a member of the Edmeston Fire Department when he lived in West Burlington and was a former member of the West Oneonta Fire Department. He was a member of the Oneonta Elks and had been a member of Oneonta Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was vice president of the West Oneonta Cemetery Association.

In 1963 and 1964, Bob and Jack Reed teamed up and were Oneonta's first place winners of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta.

Bob is survived by his wife, Thelma Harrison, of West Oneonta; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and Norma Harrison of Washhougal, Wash., Larry Harrison of West Oneonta, and John and Janice Harrison of West Laurens; three grandchildren, Nadine Cook, and Roxanne and William Harrison; a stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Sherman; three great-grandchildren of  Washington state; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was predeceased by a brother, Donald, who died in 1950.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Frank MacCracken Sr., retired pastor of Maryland, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the West Oneonta Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy to the West Oneonta Rescue Squad, West Oneonta, NY 13861 or to the charity of one's choice in memory of Robert H. Harrison.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Floyd B Keith Jr.

DELHI — Floyd B Keith Jr., 85, professional musician and teacher, and longtime Delhi resident passed away Monday evening, Feb. 4, 2002, at Countryside Care Center.

The son of the late Floyd B and Hannah J. (McWilliams) Keith, he was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Ripley, Chautauqua County, and married F. Elizabeth "Betty" Ives on June 28, 1941, in  Jefferson. Betty died Feb. 3, 1973.

Floyd was a graduate of Sewanaka High School, Floral Park, received his bachelor of arts degree from the State University College at Fredonia and master of arts degree in 1946 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.

A World War II veteran, he served an extended tour in Europe (1941-45) as a member of the U.S. Army Band.

Floyd's teaching career began at Davenport and  Jefferson (1939-41), later at Wilson (1946-47) and, subsequently, Delhi (1947-72). At the time of his retirement there were three unprecedented bands at Delaware Academy under his tutelage.

He was a member of the Oneonta Symphony/Catskill Symphony Orchestra of which he was principal second violin, and often played in a string quartet as well as pit orchestras for musical productions at the State University College at Oneonta and the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

An honorary member of the Delhi Fire Department, Floyd played in its marching band; served as choir director and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; and was a member of the Delhi Pistol Club. He was also conductor of the former Delhi Village Band, and his likeness, along with that of the band, appeared on the cover of the July 7, 1951 issue of "The Saturday Evening Post."

Throughout his life, Floyd maintained an active interest in model railroading while amassing an extensive collection of H-O gauge equipment, as well as a large model car collection which he passed on to his grandson.

Remaining active after retirement, he enjoyed astronomy, also volunteering his spare time to read for the visually impaired at Delhi Tech.

Surviving are his daughter, Carol Diane Keith, of Delhi; his son, Timothy David and his wife, Lori Keith of Bloomingburg; and four grandchildren, Isaac and his wife, Rachel Keith, Jonah, Naomi and Malachi Keith.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. William T. Ward Jr. will officiate. Burial will be later in the Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

Memorial contributions to the Delhi Fire Department EMS will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Mildred Dykeman

ONEONTA — Mildred R. Dykeman, 100, formerly of Oneonta, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at The Meadows.

She was born July 14, 1901, in Otego, the daughter of George B. and Lulie M. (Moak) Race.

She was married to Charles Nixon in 1927, and he died in the 1960s. She then married Douglas Dykeman on Nov. 11, 1969, and he died on Nov. 4, 1987.

Mildred held various jobs, including being a sewer, dressmaker and chambermaid.

She was of the Baptist faith, and a former member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a niece, Charlotte Shefl of O'Neill, Neb.

There will be no funeral service, and burial will be in the spring in the Maplewood Cemetery, Worcester.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John H. McDade

INVERNESS, Fla. — John H. McDade, 78, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Inverness, Fla.

He was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Los Angeles,  Calif., to William Joseph MacDade and Anna (Corallo) MacDade, but lived most of his life in Pomona, N.Y., and Otego, N.Y., until moving to Inverness in April 2001.

He retired from his excavating business in 1987.

He was a World War II U.S. Coast Guard veteran. Under the G.I. Bill, he learned to fly and served as a lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol for 10 years, where he received the Exceptional Service Award in December 1953, for exceptional heroism while participating in a CAP mission on March 16, 1953.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 259 in Oneonta, N.Y., and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 200 of Oneonta.

He was a member of the Ladentown Methodist Church in Pomona.

He was predeceased by his mother and father; two sons, John H. McDade Jr. and George Joseph McDade; and two brothers, Sgt. William G. McDade, U.S. Marine Corps., killed in Incheon, Korea, and Lt. James Joseph MacDade in the Maritime Service.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Elizabeth (Anderson) McDade, whom he married May 21, 1944; two sons, James William McDade of Suffern, N.Y., and William George McDade and his wife, Deborah McDade of Otego, N.Y., and Jensen Beach, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Linda Marie McDade of Garrattsville; five grandchildren, William G. McDade Jr., Serina L. McDade, Amanda M. McDade, Kayla J. McDade and Meaghan M. McDade; and one great-grandchild, Kyler Blanco.

Burial will be in the National Veteran's Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ruth Brooks Braley

SPENCER, Ind. — Ruth Brooks Braley, 90, of Spencer, Ind., passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the residence at McCormick's Creek in Spencer, Ind.

She was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Afton, the daughter of Frank and Daisy (Hurd) Decker.

She was employed as an office manager at a meat packing plant in Syracuse before her retirement.

Mrs. Braley is survived by her son, Walter Brooks of Unadilla; her daughter, Marjorie Terpenning of Bloomington, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Fay Brooks; her second husband, Harry Braley; one grandchild, Carol Baxter; one sister; and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Unadilla.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 3501 N. Prow Rd., Bloomington, IN 47404.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Edward Drannbauer

STAMFORD — Edward Drannbauer Sr., 73, of Stamford, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Queens, the son of Edward and Ladora (Dyer) Drannbauer.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna in 1998.

He has resided in Stamford for the past 28 years, relocating from Queens.

He was a World War II veteran and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Edward was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughter, Ladora Drannbauer of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Lisa Drannbauer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and William McCue of New Milford, Conn.; six grandchildren, Edward and Donald VanEtten of Stamford; William, Melissa and Matthew Drannbauer of Phoenix, Ariz., and Edward Drannbauer II of Florida; and several nieces and nephews in Germany.

A son, Edward Drannbauer Jr., predeceased him.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St. (corner of Liberty Street), Stamford, on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the funeral home with the Rev. Lynn Ash officiating.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Edward's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Carolyn P. Jordan

UNADILLA — Carolyn P. (Kay) Jordan, 81, of Unadilla, passed into the spiritual world Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at her home.

She was born May 17, 1920, in Binghamton, the daughter of Maurice and Margaret (Milk) Peake.

She was a graduate of the Franklin Literary Institute, Class of 1938.

She was married to Charles E. Jordan on April 2, 1939, in Port Crane, and has lived the remainder of her life in Unadilla.

Kay was a homemaker most of her life and in later years was a saleswoman for Bates Realty of Sidney and Insigna Realty of Sidney.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.

Kay is survived by her husband, Charles E. Jordan, of Unadilla; her daughter, Meredith and Bob of Bar Harbor, Maine; her sons, Richard and Ellie of Unadilla, Dennis and Georgia of Dorset, Vt., and David and Elnora of Sidney; her sister, Elizabeth Neish of Sidney Center; her brother, Jacob Peake of Franklin; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Melissa Jordan; and her sisters, Janette Sturock and June Hammond.

She was a member of the American Legion Joyce-Bell Post No. 578 Auxiliary, Sidney Women of the Moose Lodge No. 277, Unadilla United Methodist Church, Unadilla Martin Brook Park Committee and TOPS.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Leon B. Hurlburt

GILBERTSVILLE — Leon B. (Jack of Diamonds) Hurlburt, 88, of Gilbertsville, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at his residence.

He was born June 20, 1913, in the town of Butternuts near the Upton Castle and later lived in the Upton Castle for more than 30 years. He was the son of Lee and Mary (Hall) Hurlburt.

He married Lawanda Welch on Aug. 1, 1937, in Gilbertsville. She passed away June 13, 1981.

He was a dairy farmer all of his life and worked at the Bendix-Scintilla Corp. during World War II.

Jack was an avid coon hunter, fisherman and all-around outdoorsman.

He was well-known for his impressive arrow head collection and he was also known to always be a friend to his fellow man.

He was a former member of the Dairymen's League.

He is survived by his children who are Louise Lowe and her husband, Willis, of Gilbertsville, Mary Wildenstein and her companion, Ed Houghtaling, of Sherburne, Marie Miner and her husband, John, of Gilbertsville, Richard Hurlburt and his wife, Evelyn, of Rome, Ruth Wright and her husband, Larry, of Norwich, Shirley Mostyn and her husband, Thomas, of Rochester, Susan Andrade and her husband, Earl, of Colorado Springs,  Colo., and Leon Hurlburt Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Binghamton.

Jack was blessed with 24 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. His uncle, Lynn Hall of Oneonta, and a special friend, Glendora Heller, also survive him.

Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Jerry Bovee, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton, officiating.

Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville at a later date.

It is the family's request, that in lieu of flowers, friends donate to the Catskill Area Hospice in Jack's memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
