Orville L. Clark

GILBOA — Orville L. Clark, 78, died Feb. 6, 2002, at Albany Medical Center, after a long illness.

He was a lifelong area resident, a veteran of World War II and a member of the Stamford VFW.

Orville was predeceased by his wife, Hazel May Carl in 1985.

He is survived by his seven children, Larry of Fairfield,  Calif., Patricia Martino of Colonie, Janet Berish of Greencastle, Ind., Frank of Delanson, Gloria Calco of Hampton, Va., Carolyn Clark of Schenectady, and Wayne of Gilboa; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Disabled Veterans of America.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home at 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty Street) in Stamford, on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at 2 p.m.

Interment will be in the spring at the Gilboa Rural Cemetery, Gilboa.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Marion Holmes

MORRIS — Marion Anna Knowles Holmes, 81, of Morris, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 5, 1920, in Oneonta, the daughter of Stanley George Knowles and Anna (Chase) Knowles.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1938.

She was married to Clarence Sherwood Holmes, who died Dec. 18, 1988.

Marion loved to ride horses and will also be remembered for assisting in the operation of the Holmes Pinto Acres Tack Shop at the Otsego County Fair for many years. She also assisted the 4-H programs as a sponsor.

The Bendix Corp. of Sidney had employed her for several years until her retirement.

She is survived by her nieces, Mrs. Karen Anderson and her husband, Randy of Morris, Mrs. Nancy Gezzo and her husband, John of Troy; her nephews, Mr. Ronald Knowles of Virginia Beach, Va., Mr. Thomas Knowles of Long Island, Mr. Robert Knowles of Germany.

She was predeceased by all her brothers and sisters, Mildred, Orville S., Agnes, Keith L., and Donald Knowles.

It was Marion's request that she be cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris, and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating.

Interment of her cremains will be at a later date in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery in West Davenport.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Carolyn P. Jordan

UNADILLA — Memorial contributions for Carolyn P. (Kay) Jordan, 81, of Unadilla, who passed into the spiritual world Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at her home, may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Doris I. LaMartina

ONEONTA — Doris I. LaMartina, 77, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

She was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Otego, the daughter of Jay and Florence (Myers) Cole.

She married Leonard LaMartina on July 21, 1973, in Oneonta. Mr. LaMartina predeceased her on April 20, 1997.

Doris worked in many departments at Bendix in Sidney for many years retiring in 1987.

She loved dancing and listening to country music.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Alex Spaziani of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Betsy Mattice of Downsville, and David and Cathy Mattice of Rush; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Skidmore of Oneonta; and a stepson, John LaMartina of Dover, Del.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Welch of Delhi; one niece and one nephew.

Doris was predeceased by two sisters, Serena Wilber and Marion Cole; and a brother, George Cole.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. James Clark, pastor of the St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Downsville, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be present.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220 or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, Md. 20852-9813, in loving memory of Doris I. LaMartina.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Elizabeth Monahan

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) A. Monahan, 76, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home.

She was born June 17, 1925, in Albany, the daughter of John and Edna (Godfrey) Hughes.

On Dec. 28, 1940, she married Daniel P. Monahan in the grotto of St. Vincent's Church in Albany. He predeceased her in 1993.

Mrs. Monahan was a resident of East Springfield for 56 years and a business teacher for the Springfield Central School, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of NYSUT, Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield Center and the College of St. Rose Alumni Association.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Chris and Cecilia and grandchildren Jeff, Scott, Aubrey of East Springfield, Jim and Kay and grandchildren Kelly, Bob, Amanda of Stanley and David and Susan and grandchildren Justin and Kyle of East Springfield; three daughters and their husbands, Mary Jo and Dennis Eldredge and grandchildren Erin and Kaitie of Clifton Park, Kathy and Tony Kasprowicz of East Springfield and Eileen Bleem and grandchildren, Allison and Ryan of Naples, Fla. She was predeceased by a son, Tom, in 1954.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Cherry Valley with the Rev. John Roos officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Springfield Center Cemetery in Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 11 only, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mrs. Monahan's memory may he made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Bassett Healthcare Clinic in Richfield Springs.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Frank E. Stacey

SIDNEY — Dr. Frank "Doc" E. Stacey, 83, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born March 1, 1918, son of the late Alfred and Edith Nash Stacey in Brooklyn.

Frank served his country in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 as a physical therapy technician.

He married Eleanor M. Pina on Nov. 9, 1946, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Brooklyn. She predeceased him on June 8, 1998.

Dr. Stacey owned and operated his chiropractic office out of his home until six months ago.

He was a past member of the Sidney Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post #183 in Sidney.

He is survived by his devoted daughters, Beth Ann and Kathleen Stacey of Sidney; and two nephews, Kenneth Reilly of California and Wallace Reilly of Connecticut.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Feb. 11, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Bainbridge at 11 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, pastor, will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church in Bainbridge or the Delaware Valley Humane Society in Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. in Sidney.

Harold Zimmerman

WALTON — Harold G. Zimmerman, 70, of Walton, a lifelong Delaware County resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in Cooperstown.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1931, in South Kortright, to Fred and Violet Borst Zimmerman.

He was married to Barbara Scudder in 1952 in Downsville. She predeceased him in 1999.

Mr. Zimmerman was a truck driver for Sunoco Country Stores, of Roscoe, and a member of Plymouth Community Church, Walton Mt. Sportsman's Club and past commander of the Walton VFW. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and also enjoyed bowling and mechanical work.

Harold G. Zimmerman is survived by his sons, Tim Zimmerman of Orlando, Fla., Rick Zimmerman of Walton and Wayne Zimmerman of Treadwell; a daughter, Debra Neale of Walton; brothers, Stanley Zimmerman of Columbus, Ga., and Fred Zimmerman Jr. of Tennessee; a sister, Doris Newman of Delhi; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

There will be a memorial service Monday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at Plymouth Community Church, on Walton-Franklin Road in Walton, with Joe Bokel officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820; Plymouth Community Church or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home of Walton.

Frank Mason

NEW LISBON — Frank "Barney" Mason, 91, of New Lisbon, comfortably passed away at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002.

He was born in New York City on Sept. 6, 1910, the son of William and Mary (O'Dea) Mason.

He married Veronica Smith on July 2, 1939, and loved her till the end.

He served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Army in the European Theater during WWII.

He owned and operated a fish market in Brooklyn until 1963 when he and his family moved to New Lisbon, where he worked for the Bendix Corp. of Sidney for 15 years. Since his retirement, he took great pleasure in reading, feeding birds and enjoying the quiet of the country. He was always a gentleman.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica Mason; his son, William Mason, and his wife, Deborah; his daughter, Kathaleen Mason; and his grandchildren, Christopher and Erin, who all adored him.

As per his wishes, no calling hours or funeral services will be held at this time.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Velma A. Aspinwall

MEXICO — Velma A. Aspinwall, 88, a native of Oneonta, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home in Mexico, N.Y.

Daughter of the late John E. and Alma Jane (Miner) Hay, Velma was employed in a defense plant in Oneonta during World War II and married Charles G. Aspinwall on Aug. 17, 1941, in West Oneonta.

A member of First Presbyterian Church of Mexico, she was also a member and matron of Victoria Chapter #205 OES, and a member and past president of Stone David Post #384, American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived be her husband of 60 years, Charles G. Aspinwall; a daughter, Alma Scaggs of Mexico; son, Wesley Aspinwall of Epping, N.H.; two brothers, Kendall E. Hay of Oneonta and Melville Hay of Schenectady; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Harter Funeral Home, 9  Washington Ave., Mexico.

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Westville Cemetery in Milford.

Donald Holdridge

HARTWICK — Donald A. Holdridge, 82, passed away Friday Feb. 8, 2002, at the New York State Home for Veterans in Oxford.

He was born April 4, 1919, in Burlington, N.Y., the son of DeForest and Rosa Moran Holdridge.

Donald was a World War II Army veteran and a self-employed dairy farmer.

In accordance with Mr. Holdridge's wishes, there will be no funeral services.

Arrangements are in care of Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home of West Winfield.

Lillian E. Marquit

PRATTSVILLE — Mrs. Lillian E. Marquit, 90, of Prattsvillle, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

Mrs. Marquit was born in Kitchawan on Jan. 11, 1912, a daughter of Ferdinand and Lillian Bell Trede.

She married James Marquit at the Prattsville Methodist parsonage on Aug. 4, 1929. Mr. Marquit died on Feb. 12, 1968.

During World War II Mrs. Marquit lived in Kerhonkson and worked in a defense plant in Ellenville. At the end of the war she returned to Prattsville working for 25 years at the Victory Market.

A 78-year member of the Prattsville United Methodist Church, Mrs. Marquit served on the official board as well as the women's association. She was a past matron of the Oasis Chapter of the Eastern Star, a life member of the Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Auxiliary, life member of the Pratt Rock Fireman's Auxiliary and a member of the Senior Citizens Club.

She was an active member of the community until her death, enjoying dinners and pinochle with her friends.

Mrs. Marquit is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Annemarie Marquit of Middleburgh; her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Sayers Lutz of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Karen Marquit of Keene, N.H., Robert Marquit of Colorado Springs,  Colo., David Marquit of Klamath Falls, Ore., Diane Berdan of Middleburgh, Rachel Jessup of South Gibson, Pa. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister, Louise Kelsey; and grandson, Steven Lutz.

A celebration of the life of Mrs. Marquit will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Prattsville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto, retired, officiating.

A spring burial will be made in Fair Lawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

The family will be at the church to receive friends of Mrs. Marquit from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Donations in memory of Mrs. Marquit may be made to the Prattsville United Methodist Church, Prattsville, NY 12468 or to the Steven Lutz Scholarship Fund, Oneonta High School, East Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home in Middleburgh and the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home in Cobleskill.

Helen A. Stannard

COBLESKILL — Mrs. Helen A. Stannard, 42, of MacArthur Avenue died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Mrs. Stannard was born May 8, 1959, in Cobleskill, and was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport.

For the past three years, Mrs. Stannard was an expediter at Kintz Plastics of Howes Cave. She had also worked as head of the threading department at Interknitting and for a while was employed in all aspects of business at Harmony Acres in Cobleskill.

Mrs. Stannard attended the First Christian Church of South Valley.

As a hobby, she enjoyed painting and had received numerous awards for her work at the Cobleskill Sunshine Fair.

Helen was a kind, wonderful person, making everyone smile, and thought of others before herself.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Stannard, whom she married on July 26, 1980; her parents, Carl D. and Carol (Shafer) Miller Sr. of Summit; three sisters, Elizabeth Stannard of Davenport, Cathy Miller of Cobleskill and Connie Chase of Summit; a stepsister, Rosemary  Jackson of Cobleskill; four brothers, Carl D. Miller Jr. of  Jefferson, Kevin Miller of Charlotteville, the Rev. Alan Miller of Richfield Springs and Brian Miller of Richmondville; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Officiating will be the Rev. Alan Miller, Helen's brother.

Cremation will follow the service at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, NY 12203-3572.
