Gertrude Worden

BLOOMVILLE — Gertrude Worden, 92, of Bloomville, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1909, in Minnesota.

She married Robert Worden on July 29, 1979, in Minnesota. She lovingly kept their farm home in Bloomville.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Worden, at home; two sons, David Cunningham of California and Daniel Cunningham of Colorado; a daughter, Ruth Everett of Minnesota; and several grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, with Lay Minister Enid Carter officiating at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the spring in Minnesota.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bloomville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Norean DiToto

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Norean DiToto, age 44, of Furman Road, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Albany Medical Center.

She was born on March 3, 1957, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Anthony Gugliuzza and the late Nancy C. Dickerson Gugliuzza.

She was raised and educated in New Jersey, where she graduated from high school.

She worked in New Jersey doing clerical work for many years.

She had resided in Richfield Springs for the past four years.

She first worked in the billing department of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, and for the past three years as a nurse's assistant at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Her life enjoyments were her home and family.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

Surviving are her fiancee, Gerald Tanner, of Richfield Springs; a son, Joseph DiToto of Sparrow Bush; two daughters, Norean and Amanda DiToto, both of Port Jervis; four brothers, Gary Livingston of Old Bridge, N.J., Douglas Livingston of Lodi, N.J., Vincent Gugliuzza of Uncasville, Conn., and Wesley Gugliuzza of Old Bridge, N.J.; two sisters, Bonnie Elflein of South Amboy, N.J., and Terri Blevins of Old Bridge, N.J.; and several, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healy officiating.

The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Norean will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery later this spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

James R. Brazie

PRATTSVILLE — James R. Brazie, 71, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Prattsville, passed away Feb. 7, 2002, at the Glencroft Nursing Home, Glendale, Ariz.

He was born March 4, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of Raymond S. Brazie and Ada Grant.

He married Anna L. Blodgett.

He is survived by his wife, Anna L. Brazie, Glendale, Ariz.; two sons, James T. Brazie and daughter-in-law, Alicia, Roxbury, and Richard O. Brazie and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, Glendale, Ariz.; three daughters, Anita and son-in-law, Willard Palmer, Grand Gorge, Susan and son-in-law, Wayne Hubbard, Hamden, and Linda Vallier, Bradenton, Fla.; many grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and wife, Bette Brazie, Cobleskill, and Raymond and wife, Geraldine Brazie, Ormond Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Edna Willman and her companion, Irvin Pickett, Cobleskill.

Graveside and burial services will be held at a later date in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Contributions may be made in memory of James R. Brazie to local animal shelters.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Christopher Burke

NEW BERLIN — Christopher J. Burke Sr., 85, of New Berlin, passed away Feb. 11, 2002, in Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 23, 1916, in the town of Butternuts, son of Emory and Edith (Hitt) Burke.

He married Ruth  Johnson Burke. She predeceased him Aug. 23, 1998.

He spent his childhood in the South New Berlin area, and attended South New Berlin School.

He is survived by his daughter, Pat Burke Gifford, New Berlin; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Jr. and Linda Burke, New Berlin; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dr. Paul Webb, Towanda, Pa.; six grandchildren, Kristina Behnke, Sidney, Marty Burke, New Berlin, Jonathan Burke, Norwich, Heidi Webb and Paul Webb IV of Towanda, Pa., and Elvie Smith, New Berlin; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Seeley, Salisbury Center; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Burke and Eleanor Burke; brother-in-law, James Saunders; one very faithful cousin, Mrs. Gertrude Marsters, South New Berlin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the owner and publisher of the New Berlin Gazette from 1946-83.

He was the town of New Berlin justice of the peace for 36 years. During his service as town judge, Chris performed many marriage ceremonies and after his retirement the state of New York empowered him to continue performing marriage ceremonies.

He was a member of the New York State Magistrate Association, and was a Boy Scout leader serving the Norwich area. He was former president and a member of the Riverside Cemetery Association; a 50-year member of Phoebus Lodge No. 82; a 50-year honorary member of the New Berlin Fire Department; a member of the New Berlin Town Board for many years and the New Berlin Planning Board; a charter member of the New Berlin Rotary Club; and a member of the New Berlin Fish and Game Club.

For the past year, Chris lived at the Gilmour Health Care Facility in Norwich. He enjoyed his stay there and made it his home. Before his stay at Gilmour, he had some very special care given to him at his home by Mrs. Elsie Belden, Mrs. Andrea Sherman, Michael Grant and Bette J. Moore.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, and chaplain of the Gilmour Health Care Facility, Norwich, officiating.

Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department, or to either the New Berlin or Gilmour Health Care Resident Fund, Norwich.

Paul Shaw

HAMDEN — Paul Shaw, 22, of Hamden, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 10, 2002.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1979, at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, the son of Leonard and Susan (Brock) Shaw, and the brother of Jeremy.

Paul graduated from Downsville Central School in 1997, where he was active in sports. After graduation he attended Herkimer Community College for two years.

He was employed at Sonny and Sons Stone Company in Downsville.

Paul enjoyed being a DJ at functions, dancing and hanging with his buds. Paul's greatest gifts were his friendship, trust and laughter.

Paul is survived by his parents; brother; and a grandmother, Frances Shaw of Hamden; aunts, uncles, cousins; and many friends.

Friends may call between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville. A memorial service to celebrate Paul's life will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Colchester Community Church, with the Rev. James Clarke officiating.

Florence Perry

VENICE, Fla. — Florence Elizabeth Perry, age 91, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, in Venice, Fla.

She was born on Oct. 6, 1910, in Sidney, N.Y., where she lived until she came to Venice in 1982.

She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include her son, Robert H. Perry of New Paltz, N.Y.; her daughter, Susan E. Badeau of Syracuse, N.Y.; brothers, Raymond and Donald Laraway of Sidney, N.Y.; sisters, Helene Hroncich of Venice, Fla., and Marian Hinkley of Sidney, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 2 p.m. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. before the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

William G. Yorks Sr.

OXFORD — William G. Yorks Sr., 70, died Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2002, at his residence in Oxford.

He was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Walton, the son of Wilton and Ora (Snyder) Yorks.

He married the former Kathryn Nauman on April 22, 1989. She survives him.

Bill lived in Oxford for the past 13 years, moving from Laurens, where he resided for many years.

He had been a grounds and maintenance man for the former Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta for 23 years before his retirement.

He was an associate member of the Laurens American Legion and was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting in his younger years.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Yorks, of Oxford; two daughters and one son, Carolyn Rose and her husband, Doug, of Oneonta, William G. Yorks Jr. of North Carolina, and Jacquelyn Quackenbush and her companion, Larry Harrison, of Oneonta; six stepchildren, Bonnie Besak and her companion, Don Burgher of Gilbertsville, Leonard and Edna Grabo and Mark and Karen Grabo, all of Gilbertsville, Jody and Steve Baldwin of Sidney Center, Melinda and Jon Tracy of New Lisbon and Tracie Parks of Oxford; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

A service to celebrate the life of William G. Yorks Sr. will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Frank W. MacCracken, retired minister of Maryland, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, when the family will be present.

Bill will be cremated and his ashes interred in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Lung Association or to the Oxford Emergency Squad in Oxford.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

James V. Meehan

HAMDEN — James V. "Jim" Meehan, 86, of Launt Hollow, Hamden, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Feb. 11, 2002.

The son of the late John and Adele (Moran) Meehan, he was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Brooklyn, where he married Dorothy M. Cooper on May 11, 1939.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Jim lived in Brooklyn most of his life where he was a self-employed truck driver, a member of the Brotherhood of Union Painters, doing union contract painting until his retirement, subsequently moving to Hamden in 1975.

After coming to Delaware County, Jim did professional painting for many area people, was a member of the Delhi Rotary Club, and will be remembered for his sociability and conversation.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Dorothy M. Meehan; two sons, Dennis M. Meehan and Paul D. Meehan; a daughter, Laura J. Giordano; a sister, Winnie Muller; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, James V. Meehan Jr., who died June 3, 2001.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., today (Wednesday, Feb. 13), at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More, officiating, and cremation following.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Eska Reed Borne

JEFFERSONVILLE — Eska Reed Borne, 63, of  Jeffersonville, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002.

She was born May 18, 1938, daughter of the late Kenneth and Eska Bareagher Beilby, in Deposit.

Eska is survived by her husband, Donald Borne; four sons, Otis Reed, Jason Borne, Robert Reed and Lavern J. Reed; five daughters, Donna Halstead, Juanita Kern, Lisa Key, Pam Bauernfeind and Amanda; brother, Francis Beilby; and sister, Betty Conway; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at 9 a.m. before the service.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Willard P. Martin

WARNERVILLE — Mr. Willard P. Martin Sr., 77, of Lockwood Road, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at his son's home in Jacksonville, Fla.

Mr. Martin was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Hobart, the son of Ward and Marie (Sternberg) Martin.

He retired from truck driving and had been employed with Williamsburg Transport of Saratoga.

Mr. Martin was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Fraternal Organization of Eagles Aeries No. 2695 of Cobleskill.

He was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Cole; and a brother, Donald Martin.

Survivors include his wife, Ida (Effner) Martin, of Schoharie; three daughters, Joan M. Warner of Richmondville, Pauline Briggs of Harrington, Del., and Kathy Kosinski of Schoharie; eight sons, Willard P. Martin Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., David Martin of Hudson, Stephen Martin of Richmondville, Douglas Martin of Schoharie, Steven Martin of Denver,  Colo., Stanley Martin of Saddlebrook, N.J., Cory Martin of Schenectady, and Ward Martin of Schoharie; two sisters, Helen Kelly of Delhi and Genevieve Zimmerman of Grand Gorge; two brothers, Richard Martin of Ballston Spa and Lambert Martin of Decatur, Ala.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Spring interment will be in the Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmondville Emergency Volunteer Squad, Richmondville, NY 12149 or the Fraternal Organization of the Eagles Aeries No. 2695, Legion Drive, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

John David Powell

HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. — John David Powell, 41., died on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, in Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, N.J.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., he grew up in Greenville, N.Y., and lived in Utica, N.Y., and Freehold, N.J., before moving to Hillsborough six years ago.

John was an assistant vice-president of data processing for Merrill Lynch in Pennington, N.J.

He loved volleyball and joined every league available. He was an avid collector of everything that interested him, especially coins, stamps, crystal, computers and baseballs.

Surviving are his wife of 13 months, Cynthia Ann (Banks); his stepdaughter, Lynnette Nichole Mace; his parents, Richard and Ann Powell of Oneonta, N.Y.; his brothers, Daniel of Palenville, N.Y., and Mark of Stoughton, Mass.; his sister, Carol Green of Albany, N.Y.; and his three nieces and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in the Montgomery Evangelical Free Church, 246 Griggstown Rd., Belle Mead, N.J., with the Rev. Dwight C. Hodne officiating. Relatives and friends may gather with the Powell family at 5:30 p.m. in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Colon Cancer Research Study Fund, care of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10021.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Route 206, Hillsborough, N.J. 08844.
