Gino Ganio

ASTATULA, Fla. — Gino Ganio, 83, of Astatula, Fla., formerly a longtime Mount Vision, N.Y., resident passed away peacefully Monday morning, Feb. 11, 2002, at Florida Waterman Hospital in Eustis, Fla.

He was born Dec. 19, 1918, in Manhattan, N.Y., the son of Favarino and Clementina (Regruto-Tomalino) Ganio.

He married Rosabel Miller on July 13, 1945. She died March 19, 1988.

He enlisted in the Army in 1941. He was a tank commander and earned a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for Valor in Action at Saipan.

He was a member of the American Legion in Laurens, N.Y., for many years.

He graduated from the State University College of Technology at Delhi, N.Y., in 1948, valedictorian of his class.

He and his wife, Rosabel operated a dairy farm in Mount Vision from 1948 to 1963.

He was a devoted father who chose to become a dairy farmer for the family oriented lifestyle farming provided. After farming, he worked for a short time for the Navy in Bayonne, N.J. He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route carrier for the Mount Vision Post Office.

After retiring from the Postal Service, he and his wife spent winters in Florida and summers in Mount Vision until her death in 1988. He married Virginia (Collins) Keeney in 1990. She died in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Waite, whom he married in 1998; his sister, Elvira Ganio, Dunedin, Fla.; his children, John and Mary Lou Ganio, Roseboom, N.Y., Gino and Joan Ganio, Franklin, Tenn., Susan and Kent Hoyt, Morris, N.Y., Virginia Ganio, Mount Vision and Robert Ganio, Mount Vision; grandchildren, Nathan Ganio, New Paltz, N.Y., Christina, Timothy and Gregory Ganio, Roseboom, N.Y., Holly and Darren Seigard, Cortland, N.Y., Gino and Matthew Ganio, and Jody Land, Franklin, Tenn., Sandra and Andrew Meyers, Morris, N.Y., Kent Hoyt, Morris, N.Y., Laura and Kelly Hoyt, Syracuse, N.Y., James and Lori Ganio, Mount Vision, N.Y., Bradley Ganio, Tampa, Fla., Brooke Ganio, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Meghan Ganio, Miami, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren.

He also left stepchildren, Ralph Hipple, Oakland,  Calif., Virgina Keeney, Westminster, Md., Donald Hipple, Reistertown, Md., and Henry Waite, Mansfield, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Contributions may be made to the Rosabel-Gino Ganio Memorial Scholarship Fund at Laurens Central School, Laurens, NY 13796.

M. Evangeline MacLaury

HARPERSFIELD — M. Evangeline "Vangie" MacLaury, 85, of Harpersfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at home.

She was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Harpersfield, the daughter of Arleigh and Anabel (MacCracken) Hendry.

She married Hugh P. MacLaury on Aug. 20, 1943. He passed away March 21, 1975.

A lifelong area resident, she was a 1935 graduate of Stamford Seminary and a graduate of the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

Vangie was a member of the North Kortright Presbyterian Church for 74 years, having the distinction of being the oldest and longest member of the church. She was confirmed at the age of 11 in 1928. She served the church as treasurer for many years. She was also secretary and treasurer for more than 30 years of the North Kortright Cemetery Association.

She was instrumental in the organization preparation and service of many church suppers, including their turkey and oyster dinners.

She was employed at Stamford Central School in the cafeteria before serving as Harpersfield town clerk for 30 years. During this time, she founded the Harpersfield Historical Association and served as town historian for many years.

She enjoyed memberships in the Delaware County Historical Association and the New York State Historical Association.

As an author she wrote "Those Rugged Hills and Green Valleys" as a means of "preserving a bit of the history of the Town of Harpersfield so newcomers and future residents can know the part this town has had in the changing world." Vangie was in the process of writing another book.

A strong supporter of 4-H, she served as a leader with the Utsayantha Aggies Club. Vangie's special passion was quilting, a love she shared with many.

She is survived by a son, Judson P. and Lynn MacLaury, Harpersfield; two daughters, Kandy and Clinton Collins, Davenport, and Margaret (Peggy) Corchran, Biloxi, Miss.; grandchildren, Rebecca and Paul Garrison, Davenport, Maureen, Kevin, Brian Corchran, Mississippi; a great-granddaughter, Honnah Garrison; a daughter-in-law, Gloria MacLaury, Fla.; two sisters, Erma and LeRoy MacArthur, Hobart, and Wylma and William Peters, Fort Myers, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Kenneth MacLaury, predeceased her.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, North Kortright, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tracie E. Martin officiating.

Calling hours will be Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will take place in the spring at North Kortright Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the North Kortright Cemetery Association or the North Kortright Memorial Fund; 115 Underpass Road, Davenport, NY, 13750.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Linden Sanford

SELMA, N.C. — Linden Eugene Sanford, 66, of 125 Tally Ho Drive, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, 2002, at home with his loving family after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 4, 1935, in the Catskills of New York, to the late Ken and Elsa Sanford.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Brigitte Zillig Sanford; sons, Stephen and wife, Sandra, of Clayton, N.C., David and wife, Anna, Sanford of Florence, Ala.; daughter, Lisa of Selma, N.C.; grandchildren, Jason and wife, Leanne, Sanford, Andrew Sanford, and Kathryn Sanford; brother, Dennis Sanford of San Juan Capistrano,  Calif.; sisters, Ruth Sanford of Fleischmanns, N.Y., and Elaine Krum of Afton, N.Y.

Lin was preceded in death by his brothers, Doug and Lyle Sanford.

Lin moved to Wendell, N.C., in 1963, to become plant manager of Norwich Mills (later Champion Products).

Lin was a town commissioner, member of the Wake County Board of Education, deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church and member of the Rotary Club.

After leaving Wendell, N.C., Lin went on to establish his own business in Florence, Ala., (Lin-D's Inc.) and later Knit-Rite of Clayton, N.C.

After retirement, Lin pursued his passion for woodworking, fishing and surfing the World Wide Web.

He always had a ready laugh and a positive outlook on life, which he shared with all who loved him.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, N.C.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wendell, N.C.

Burial in Greenmount Cemetery.

Those desiring to make memorials may do so to Johnston Memorial Homecare and Hospice or the Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Wendell, N.C. 27520.

Ethel Scobie

DELHI — Ethel Scobie, a lifelong area resident, formerly of Walton, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been residing. She was 87.

Mrs. Scobie was born in Walton on Sept. 14, 1914, to George and Edna Stranigan Coulter.

She married Andrew Scobie in Walton on June 25, 1935. He predeceased her in 1970. She was a housewife.

Ethel Scobie is survived by a son, Bruce Scobie, of Virginia; grandchildren, Linda Balcom, Sidney, and Jodie and Jessica Scobie of Virginia; a great-granddaughter, Yvonne Swislosky; a great-grandson, Anatolie Donenko; and great-great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Victoria Swislosky.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son, George Scobie; and a brother, Arthur Coulter.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, where friends may call Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Louis A.W. Enders

NEW LISBON — Louis A.W. Enders, 80, of New Lisbon, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at his home in New Lisbon.

He was born in Pelham on Jan. 31, 1922, the son of Louis A.W. Enders and Dorothy (Femister) Enders.

He married Joyce Mansfield on Feb. 28, 1942, in the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris. They would have been married 60 years at the end of this month.

Louis was a mechanical engineer who was employed by Babcock & Wilcox of Boston, Mass., for many years.

His interests included bow hunting, photography and the great outdoors. He was also an avid animal lover and downhill (Alpine) skier.

He is also remembered by his friends and family for inventing various useful gadgets.

Louis is survived by his wife, Joyce, of New Lisbon; his two children, Lucia Davison and her husband, Jeffrey, of Jericho, Vt., and Mark Enders and his wife, Sarah, of Pleasant View, Utah. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Lea and Sabra Davison and Zane and Destrey Enders. A sister, Carole Mirabella of Scarsdale, and a favorite nephew, Chip Mirabella of Wappingers Falls, also survive him.

The family will receive friends at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring at the Enders family plot in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Those who wish may make donations to The Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, NY in Louis' memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Joseph M. Hill Sr.

KINGSTON — Joseph M. Hill Sr., 58, of Millers Lane, died at his home Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002.

He was born in Kingston on Nov. 14, 1943, a son of the late Agnes Vedder.

Mr. Hill was employed as a security officer for Fleet Processing, town of Ulster, and was a bus driver for the city of Kingston and Adirondack Trailways, until his illness.

Surviving are four sons, Joseph M. Hill Jr. of Saugerties, Michael Hill of Margaretville, Jesse Decker of Glasco, and Kenneth Decker of Saugerties; seven daughters, Tammy Alandt and Tina Catalano, both of Knightdale, N.C., Linda Sloane of Glasco, Barbara Decker of Kingston, Diane Decker of Kingston, Patricia Decker of Lake Katrine and Donna Vitek of Kingston; a sister, Janice Pavilides of Kingston; 27 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Maryann Hill of Kingston.

His wife, Catherine Kahrs-Hill died Feb. 18, 1995.

The funeral service will be held at the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Ave., Kingston, Friday at 11 a.m.

Friends will be received at the funeral home, Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Wiltwyck Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to The Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie NY 12601.

Enes  Schmidt

MERIDALE — Memorial services for Enes  Schmidt, 95, of Meridale, who died Feb. 8, 2002, will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, at 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. John Osterhout, pastor of the Meridale Community Church, officiating.

Margaret Tryon

AFTON — Mrs. Margaret Stilwell Tryon of Afton, died Feb. 14, 2002, at Wilson Hospital in  Johnson City.

She was born April 20, 1911, the daughter of Paige and Carrie (Webb) Stilwell.

She married Irving C. Tryon of Unadilla on June 22, 1935, at the North Afton United Methodist Church. He predeceased her on June 3, 1979.

Mrs. Tryon was a graduate of Afton Central School.

She was employed as an inspector during World War II at Scintilla in Sidney for six years. She later was employed in the payroll department of Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 14 years.

She was a former member of the North Afton Methodist Church and a member of the Afton United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Tuscarora Chapter, NSDAR, in Binghamton.

Her sister, Elizabeth Colton, recently passed away.

She is survived by a son, Richard I. Tryon; a daughter and son-in-law, Carrolyn and Norman Davies; a granddaughter; a niece; cousins; and her loving cat, Muffy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Jose Valencia officiating. Friends are invited to call one hour before services with the family in attendance on Saturday.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, Bainbridge, NY, or to the Sidney Animal Shelter, Sidney, NY.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Mary Agnes Lewis

MIDDLEBURGH — Mary Agnes Lewis, 54, of Middleburgh, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, after succumbing to cancer.

Ms. Lewis was born in Manhattan, to Leo and Elizabeth Shevlin, where she attended Cathedral High School.

After a successful career in the photographic industry, Ms. Lewis attended the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill and earned her bachelor's of science degree.

While at Cobleskill Tech, Ms. Lewis contributed heavily to campus life by her involvement in student organizations and by serving as a mentor for students in the Equal Opportunity Program.

She is survived by two sisters, Patricia Federico and Catherine Shevlin; and one son, Richard Lewis.

Mary will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Roger Hofsdal

BLOOMVILLE — Roger Hofsdal, 54, of Bloomville, passed away on Friday morning, Feb. 15, 2002, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where he was admitted the previous week.

The son of the late Arne and Mable (Ingram) Hofsdal, he was born April 20, 1947, in Margaretville, and received his education at Andes Central School.

A United States Army artillery veteran, he served in Vietnam (1966-68) where he was wounded in action and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He married Elaine Hardenburgh on Dec. 31, 1974.

A lifelong area resident, Roger was a self-employed drilling contractor, a member of Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion, Delhi, and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are a daughter, Erin K. Hofsdal, and his former wife, Elaine Brooks, both of Charles City, Va.; three brothers, Jack and Ronald Hofsdal of Andes and Tex Hofsdal of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a brother, Christ Hofsdal, who died Feb. 19, 2000.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, by the Donald W. Gleason Post, which will also accord military honors. The family will receive friends following the service. In keeping with Roger's wishes, cremation will follow the service.

Memorial contributions to the Donald W. Gleason Post 190, American Legion, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son of Delhi.
