John G. Hendricks

MILFORD — John Garrett Hendricks, 73, of West Main Street in Milford died Friday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

John was born on July 15, 1928, in Kingston, the second son of the late Joseph and Bertha (Schoombeek) Hendricks. In infancy, he and his family moved to Milford, where he was raised and educated, graduating from the Milford Central School with the Class of 1946.

He was known throughout the area's athletic leagues as an exceptional athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball and football.

In 1950, John was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War with the  Oklahoma 45th Infantry Division as a military police soldier, as well as a special forces athlete in basketball, baseball and football.

Upon his honorable discharge from the military in 1952, he was signed by the New York Giants football team and played for them for three seasons.

Following an injury while playing for the Giants, John returned to Milford and married Gloria Gladstone on July 9, 1955, in the Andes United Presbyterian Church.

Upon his return to Milford, John also began what would become a 25-year baseball career playing for the Milford Macs. It is noted in the book "All We Had Was Us," that he "hammered out some prodigious home runs during his career with the Macs" and in 1977 he made the longest home run ever hit at Wilbur Park, "a shot which cleared everything, including the trees outside the left field fence."

John also formed the Cooperstown Indians baseball team and served as manager as well as a player.

In 1965, he returned to football, this time with the North Atlantic Football League, playing for the Syracuse Falcons. At 38, he retired from football and, at the time, was the oldest player in the league. He returned to Milford to once again play for the Macs.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, John was a self-employed livestock dealer for many years. At one time he also owned the former telephone building on Pioneer Street in Cooperstown, where he operated John's Sport Shop and Billiard Parlor.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1312 in Oneonta, Eagles Aerie No. 1260 in Oneonta, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566 and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary.

Known to all as "Big John," some of his greatest pleasures in life were watching interscholastic and Hartwick College basketball and, in later years, riding around in his golf cart and helping out at the Cooperstown Dreams Park.

John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gloria Gladstone Hendricks, of Milford; their four children, John G. Hendricks Jr. of Davie, Fla., Carole Hendricks of Cooperstown, Elizabeth Hendricks of Saratoga and Tom Hendricks and his wife, Polly, of Fairport; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Liza, Jonathan, Dane, T.J. and Tatum Hendricks, and Parker and Blake Protzman; a brother-in-law, Walter B. Gladstone of Andes; two sisters-in-law, Helen Hendricks of Davenport and Carol Loeb and her husband, Eliot, of Saratoga Springs; his mother-in-law, Edna Bresee Gladstone Benedict of St. Jame's Manor in Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Watson, and a brother, Carl Hendricks.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., in Cooperstown, when John's family will be in attendance.

The Order of the Burial of the Dead with a celebration of Holy Communion will be offered at noon Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating.

The committal service and burial will immediately follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery. Military funeral honors will be accorded by members of the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566, with Taps to be played by his granddaughter, Liza.

Following the graveside services, everyone is invited to The Pepper Mill in Cooperstown for a time of refreshment and fellowship with John's family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church Pew Fund, in care of the church at 4636 State Highway 28, Hartwick Seminary, NY 13326.
