Debra M. Kirby

DELHI — Debra M. Kirby, 44, a native and lifelong Delhi resident, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2002, at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, following an extended illness.

The daughter of the late Dale G. and Eleanor L. (Storey) Mason, she was born Aug. 4, 1957, in Delhi, received her education at Delaware Academy, and married Rollie C. Kirby Jr. on June 23, 1974.

Though much of her time was devoted to her home and family, Debra had been employed for a number of years at Delaware Academy, first in the cafeteria and subsequently, for seven years, as a secretary in the high school district office, until her health declined last year.

Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Rollie C. Kirby Jr.; two daughters, Rollamay and Nicole Kirby; a granddaughter, Emma Turkoane; her mother, Eleanor Mason; her grandmother, Hilda Storey; three brothers, Gary Mason, Kevin and his wife, Michele Mason, and Michael and his wife, Anna Mason; a sister, Pamela and her husband, Brian Purdy; her parents-in-law, Rollie Sr. and Carolyn Kirby, all of Delhi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Delhi, by her cousin, the Rev. Bert More, and burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Robert Hedman Sr.

MARYLAND — Robert Walter Hedman Sr., 69, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 15, 1932, in Maryland, the son of Herbert Walter and Florence Marie (Cough) Hedman.

He married Dolores I. Oldes on Sept. 19, 1954, in Portlandville Methodist Church.

Mr. Hedman was a graduate of Milford Central School, Class of 1952.

He was a diesel truck mechanic at Reinhardt Oil Corp. in West Oneonta for 25 years, retiring is 1994.

He was a member of the Oneonta Moose Lodge No. 465, and had an interest in collecting antique tractors and motors.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores I. Hedman, of Maryland; children, Robert W. Jr. and his wife, Cheryl Hedman of New Mexico, Fred and his wife, Rhonda Hedman of Davenport and Ralph and his wife, Jackie Hedman of Oneonta; grandchildren, Lorrie Ann, Bobby, Brandon and Savannah; one great-grandson; brothers and sisters, Paul and Berniece Lavine of Phoenix Mills, Jack Hedman of Bainbridge, Rosalyn McNeilly of Delhi, Shirley and Elmer Bliss of Oneonta and Christine Klugh of Bainbridge; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Betty Butler.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Maryland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expression of sympathy may be made to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Rose Mary Dewey

UNADILLA — Rose Mary Dewey, 47, of Unadilla, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born July 20, 1954, in Oneonta, the daughter of Tony and Laura (Sorensen) Mongillo.

She was married to Robert A. Dewey on Feb. 2, 1980, in Oneonta.

Rose was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1972.

She loved the outdoors, where she rode and showed horses, raised pug dogs and enjoyed walking and hiking in the countryside.

She was employed as a buyer for Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for the last 20 years.

She was a member of the Unadilla Fire Department.

Rose is survived by her husband, Robert A. Dewey, of Unadilla; her father and stepmother, Tony and Ann Mongillo of Oneonta; her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Chris Winkler of Unadilla; her brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Joy Mongillo of Taupo, New Zealand; her grandmother, Ethel Sorensen of Oneonta; her stepbrother, John Spence of Oneonta; a nephew, Joseph Winkler of Unadilla; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Philip and Marie Schreher of Plano,  Texas; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her mother, Laura Sorensen.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Joseph J. Schuck, associate pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department, Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Walter B. Michaels

SIDNEY — Walter B. Michaels, 73, of Sidney, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born June 1, 1928, son of the late Clarence B. and Clara Pierce Michaels in Oneonta.

Walter was a graduate of Oneonta High School.

He was employed as a design engineer for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when he retired and later worked for Nestle-Beechnut in Fort Plains.

Walter was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by son-in-law, Myron E. Gifford, Sidney; two nieces, Susan and Anselmo Marin, Bainbridge and Cathy J. and Terrance Green Jr., Unadilla; one nephew, David A. Gifford, Sidney; three great-nephews, Robert Wiswell Jr., Ray Wiswell II, and Matthew E. Green; one great-niece, Linda E. Marin; and three great-great-nephews.

He is predeceased by a sister, Eda M. Gifford.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Chuck Gleason, pastor of the Anchor of Hope Church in Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

James Bobnick

DRYDEN — James Edward Bobnick of 18 Logan's Run, Dryden, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, of an apparent heart attack.

Jim was born Aug. 10, 1936, in Schenevus, a son of Mary Milavec Bobnick of Worcester, and the late Joseph Bobnick.

Jim graduated from Worcester Central School in 1954 and from Cornell University in 1961.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1984, retiring from the Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Bobnick was employed at Cornell University as an administrative manager in the agronomy department until retiring in 1996.

Active in many civic organizations, Jim was a member and past master of the Dryden Lodge No. 472 F.&A.M., the Flashing Feathers Bow Club and served as president of the Dryden School Board of Education.

He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and was a past president of the parish council and served on many other committees.

Jim was an avid hunter who loved the outdoors and spending time with his wife and family.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, RoseMarie Butler Bobnick, of Dryden; his children, Sharon (Robert) VanDeMark of Newfield, Deborah (Tom Quaile) Bobnick of Locke, James E. (Cindie) Bobnick Jr. of Willseyville, Thomas Bobnick and Lorena Bobnick, both of Dryden; his siblings, Lawrence (Toni) Bobnick of Worcester, Joan Bobnick of Wilmington, Del., and Brenda (Jim) Yergey of Binghamton; grandchildren, Brett James VanDeMark, Amelia Rose VanDeMark, Tanis Michael Bobnick, Logan James Bobnick; aunts, uncles; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Holy Cross Church, 375 George Rd., Freeville, with the Rev. Bernard Carges, as celebrant. Friends are invited to call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are directed to the Holy Cross Church, 375 George Rd., Freeville, NY 13068.

John Guastanimo

ONEONTA — John Guastanimo, 79, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his friends.

Mr. Guastanimo was born on Feb. 14, 1923, the son Jacob and Emilia (Stackler) Guastasna.

He lived in Oneonta and worked at the ARC Otsego for the last 21 years.

John was an avid collector of train memorabilia. He enjoyed going to church every week and then out to dinner, as well as, spending time with friends, his birds and his cat.

He is survived by a brother, Frank Guastavino of  Pennsylvania; and many close friends at Upstate Homes of Milford and St. Mary's Church.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Carlene Perkins

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Carlene Perkins, 74, of Pioneer Trail, formerly a legal assistant in Oneonta, N.Y., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at home.

Mrs. Perkins was born in Oneida, N.Y., and moved to Florida in 1976.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta. She enjoyed camping.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Kenneth; three sons, John of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Kenneth Jr., of Orange Park, Fla., and Donald of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Fla., 32129.

Clifford Harris Sr.

WEST FULTON — Clifford "Boomer" Harris Sr., died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Florida.

Born in South Gilboa, July 28, 1936, the son of Wiltsie and Margaret Harris.

He grew up in South Gilboa and attended South Gilboa School.

He served for eight years with the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict.

Clifford worked at the New York Power Authority in Blenheim, retiring in 1998. He was also employed by Gables in Cobleskill.

He was a member of the Stamford VFW, Kiwanis and Masons.

Clifford was involved with the  Jefferson Rescue Squad, served as  Jefferson town justice for eight years, and on the  Jefferson school board.

He was actively involved with the Stamford Little League.

Clifford is survived by his wife, Peg Harris; his five children, Steven and his wife, Melody of Petersburg, Stanley of Queens, Clifford "Boomer" Jr. and his wife, Brenda, Stacey Danley and her husband, Paul of Maryland, and Elizabeth "Bee" Lawyer and her husband, Bradford of Schoharie. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nathaniel Danley, Brianne Harris, Brandon Harris, Amelia Trimbell, Andrew Harris, Jennifer Cole and Perry Lawyer. He is also survived by his children's mother, Gladys Harris of Schoharie.

Contributions in Clifford's memory may be made to the Stamford VFW and the American Heart Association.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., corner of Liberty Street, Stamford, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Masons' service will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Carol Coaltrain officiating.

Interment will follow at the Stamford Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Richard M. Potts

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Richard M. "Rick" Potts, 54, of Lake Street, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday evening, Feb. 16, 2002, in his home with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born on March 2, 1947, in Ilion, son of the late Eugene and Anne Dawley Potts.

A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Richfield Springs.

On May 29, 1970, he married Shirley Barrett Yaw in Richfield Springs.

At one time he had managed Tom Senif's Texaco Station in Richfield Springs.

In 1975, he went to work as a horticulturist for the Clark Foundation in Cooperstown, retiring in 1990.

To his family, Rick was the strength that held them together, he was the one they leaned on and he stood by them.

He was of the Presbyterian faith. He was an exempt volunteer fireman with the Richfield Springs Fire Department, a former member of the Richfield Springs Lions Club.

Rick loved NASCAR racing and was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. He also enjoyed all kinds of music, fishing and old classic cars.

He was a friend to many and will always be remembered.

Surviving him are his wife of 31 years, Shirley; a daughter, Stacey and her husband, Cody Mayne; a stepson, William Yaw and his wife, Carrie, all of Richfield Springs; two stepdaughters, Beth Ann and her husband, Randy Gage of Mohawk, Sue Ann and her husband, Gary Horner of Herkimer; his twin sister, Andrea C. Bouteiller of Lexington, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Matthew Yaw, Cody Mayne, Brandon and Austin Gage, Tyler Yaw, Kelvin and Jason Berberick, Jessica and Crystal Horner; his special little pal, "Boogie;" several nieces including a special niece, Denise Bouteiller Rigo of Richfield Springs; and several nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Renee Lynne Bouteiller in 1990.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday two hours before the memorial service 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Herbert W. Hood

WALTON — Herbert W. Hood, of Walton, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in Oneonta. He was 63.

He was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Downsville, to William and Birdella Raisner Hood, and was a lifelong area resident.

On July 2, 1971, he married Irva Wood in Walton, who survives him.

He was in the U.S. Army from 1961-62, and worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Walton Post Office.

Herbert Hood was a member of the American Legion, Walton Mountain Sportsman's Club, the NRA and an honorary fireman.

Besides his wife, Irva; he is survived by four children, Randy Stone, Suann Maler, Brian Hood and Sara Gerow, all of Walton; a sister, Dolores Gray, Walton; a brother, Clayton Hood, South New Berlin; and nine grandchildren, Cody Stone, Shaylee Maler, Adam Maler, Christina Hood, Tiffany Hood, Katlyn Gerow, Brianna Hood, Chelsey Hood and Lucas Gerow.

He was predeceased by a son, William Clay Hood; and a sister, Virginia Liddle.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner North and Delaware Streets, Walton, where a memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Earl Pomeroy officiating.

There are no prior calling hours.
