Charles Peter Goodnough

COOPERSTOWN — Dr. Charles Peter Goodnough, 60, an orthopedic surgeon, an adventurer and an admirer of literature, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20, 2002, at his home in Cooperstown, due to complications from colon cancer.

Dr. Goodnough, known as Peter, was born Jan. 21, 1942, in Watertown, the oldest of six children born to Dr. Charles and Virginia (LaGraff) Goodnough.

He attended Watertown-area parochial schools through the ninth grade and became a dedicated Boy Scout, earning the top rank of Eagle Scout. He was also elected a member of the Order of the Arrow, an honorary division of the Boy Scouts of America.

He attended the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Mass., and then went on to Hamilton College in Clinton, graduating in 1964.

He began his career teaching English at Pebble Hill, a country day school outside Syracuse. There, he met his future bride, Nancy Taylor, who was teaching French at the school. They married on July 16, 1966, in Medford Lakes, N.J.

After teaching for a year, Dr. Goodnough switched gears and enrolled at New York Medical College in Manhattan, graduating in 1969. He served an internship and four-year residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont Hospitals in Burlington.

He then enlisted in the United States Army, serving for two years at its Aeromedical Center in Fort Rucker, Ala., and winning the Army Commendation Medal. Later in his life, he became active in the Army Reserves, serving in a medical unit in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm and treating Iraqi prisoners of war.

For 14 years, Dr. Goodnough was a partner at Elmira Orthopedic Associates in Elmira, until he was called to military duty during the Gulf War.

Afterwards, he moved to Raleigh, N.C., where he was employed by Kaiser Permanente, a health maintenance organization, for five years.

He was called to military duty again in 1997, treating American soldiers in Europe as part of the peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. Later that year, Dr. Goodnough returned to upstate New York — his favorite landscape — as an attending orthopedic surgeon with Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Dr. Goodnough managed to combine his love of medicine, writing and exploring other countries through his membership in Health Volunteers Overseas, a nonprofit organization that sends physicians to the world's poorest regions. He volunteered in Bangladesh in 1986 and 1993 and in Malawi in 1987, providing medical care that was typically unavailable and training local health-care workers.

He later wrote about all his travels in various publications, including the New England Journal of Medicine.

He was a member of the American Academy of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, where he served on the board of deacons as its treasurer.

Above all, he was a lifelong scholar, constantly delving into poetry, philosophy and literature and applying all he learned from it to his own life. His home overflowed with books and he often recited his favorite passages from memory.

He also loved big cities, especially New York and Paris, for their theatres, museums and restaurants.

He was an accomplished cook and bread baker, re-creating many of the dishes he sampled while traveling.

Three of his great passions are carried on by his children. His love of language lives on in his daughter, Abby Goodnough, a writer and reporter for the New York Times. His love of gadgets survives in his son, Peter Goodnough, who markets high-tech electronics for Samsung. And his love of medicine continues in his daughter,  Taylor Goodnough, a family practice resident at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.

His loving wife, Nancy, a steadfast companion on his many journeys, survives him, as do his three adoring children; and his mother, Virginia Goodnough of Watertown. He is also survived by five brothers and sisters, Anne Rupp of Bloomfield Hill, Mich., Martha Plumpton of Henderson, Kristina Goodnough of West Hartford, Conn., Stephen Goodnough of Boston and Bruce Goodnough of Watertown; and 34 nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Dr. Goodnough's family will be in attendance.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan and the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastors, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Moorestown, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326, or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
