Dorothy Turner

WORCESTER — Dorothy Ann Turner, 83, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her home in Worcester.

She was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Huntington, the daughter of Hollis W. and Dorothy (Donaldson) Meinecke.

She married John James Turner on Nov. 19, 1939, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Huntington Station.

Mrs. Turner is formerly of Huntington Station, and her husband, is a retiree of Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage.

She is survived by her husband, John J. Turner, of Worcester; two sons, John and wife, Jackie Turner, of Worcester and James and wife, Jule Turner, of Allamuchy, N.J.; grandchildren, John Jr., Michael and wife, Sherri, Shannon, James, Jason and Tara; great-grandchildren, Alyssa (Ali) and Michael (Moey); a sister, Grace Sullivan of Middleburgh, and two sisters from Long Island; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a best friend. She will be dearly missed.

Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. until the funeral service time at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the E.J. Skinner Co. in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Mrs. Turner will be cremated after the funeral service, and burial will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Turner to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Maurene Barrett

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Maurene Jeanette Barrett, age 54, of U.S. Highway No. 20, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2002, in her home with her loving family at her side.

She was born on July 12, 1947, in New York City, the daughter of the late Eugene and Helen Bulger Muller.

Maurene was raised and educated in the Bronx, until 1956, when her family moved to Richfield Springs.

She was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, Class of 1965.

On Feb. 25, 1966, she married Harold A. "Bud" Barrett in Richfield Springs.

For 19 years she worked as a secretary for the Bruce Hall Corp. in Richfield Springs. In 1989, she went to work for the Richfield Springs Central School District, retiring in 2000.

She had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs.

Her family and home came first in her life.

An artistic person, she loved ceramics and decorating each room in her home.

Maurene was an avid gardener and spent many hours planting and caring for the flowers in her yard. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her granddaughter and guiding light, Allison Barrett.

She will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person.

Surviving are her husband of 36 years, Harold; one son, Scott Barrett of Syracuse; two daughters, Donielle and her husband, Robert Bradley, of Whitesboro, and Christine Barrett of Richfield Springs, and Christine's special friend, Brad Bellinger; a daughter-in-law, Emily Barrett of Syracuse; one granddaughter, Allison Barrett of Syracuse; a very special niece, Lisa Kafer of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two nephews.

Funeral services will be on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, at 40 West James St. in Richfield Springs. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Interment will be later this spring in Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Laura VanDeusen

ONEONTA — Laura M. Stark VanDeusen, 89, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born July 13, 1912, in Hobart, the daughter of Urion and Jennie (Dunham) Todd, one of seven children.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Seymour and Everett Todd; two sisters, Clara Delameter and Edna MacFarland; a sister-in-law, Wilhemina Todd; and a granddaughter, Beth Frederick.

She married Frank Stark in August 1939, who passed away in 1977. She was later married to Leonard VanDeusen for a short time.

She was a resident of Delaware and Otsego counties all of her life.

She was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church in Oneonta and a past member of the Rebekahs.

Laura enjoyed fishing, sewing, embroidery work and reading, especially historical novels.

Surviving are sons, Robert H. Todd and wife, Lura, of Morris, Vincent Stark and companion, Elsie Colburn, of Gilbertsville; two daughters, Dianne Cardwell of Whippany, N.J., and Cynthia Young of Franklin; 14 grandchildren, Rita Richards and Linda Todd of Oneonta, LuAnn Todd of Morris, Steve Stark of Clarence, Lisa Gray and Marnie Ward of Florida, Jonathan Stark of New York City, Terry Block of Berlin, N.H., Brian Block of Flagstaff, Ariz., Bruce Block of Land O'Lakes, Fla., Nicole Adams of Naples, Fla., Debbie Bailey of Kerhonkson and Sharon Bakeman of Baldwinsville; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two brothers, Ferris Todd of Delhi and Robert E. Todd of Keene and wife, Fran, of New Hampshire; and sister-in-law, Grace Todd of Summerfield, Fla.

There will be no calling hours or funeral.

A memorial service will be held in the spring for the convenience of the family. Burial will be at East Sidney Cemetery.

Anyone wishing to donate in her memory may give to the Salvation Army.

Cremation will take place at Hillington Crematorium.

Helen P. Taylor

WALTON — Helen P. Taylor, a longtime Walton resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at her home. She was 93.

Mrs.  Taylor was born Dec. 23, 1908, in the town of Stamford, to William and Mabel Shutts Pickens.

She earned an associate's degree in teaching from Delhi Tech in 1929, and taught in a one-room school house on O'Dell Lake Road in Stamford.

On March 23, 1932, she was married to Ralph W. Taylor, who predeceased her in 1987.

She has lived in Walton for the past 67 years and was 4-H leader of the Happy Dairy Club for many years and a volunteer at Delaware Valley Hospital. She and her husband were members of the Delaware County Jersey Cattle Club and they were also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from State University Ag & Tech College at Delhi.

Helen P.  Taylor is survived by a son, Ralph  Taylor of Walton; three grandchildren, Nancy Burgey and husband, Richard, of Rochester, Janet  Taylor of Walton and William  Taylor and wife, Gretchen, of Marcellus; and four great-grandchildren, Cindy and Linda Burgey and Shirley and Alexis Taylor.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where friends may call Sunday, March 3, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 4, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bert More officiating and burial in the Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Walton Emergency Squad, 61 West St., Walton NY 13856; or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820, would be appreciated.

Eleanor Mae Utter

ONEONTA — Eleanor Mae Utter, 85, lifelong resident of Oneonta, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 22, 1916, in Honesdale, Pa., the daughter of Lynn and Ella (Rodenburg) Monington.

She married Herman L. Utter on Jan. 23, 1938.

Mrs. Utter was retired from the former W.T. Grants Department Store and Rodgers Appliances that were in Oneonta.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by her three children, Marilyn Gauthier of Georgetown, Mass., Merlin Utter of Hillsdale, N.J., and James Utter of Stormville; two sisters, Agnes Farrara of Oneonta and Charlotte Starkweather of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Angie Monington of Oneonta and Pauline Monington of Casper, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Utter was predeceased by her husband, Herman L. Utter; and three brothers, Merlyn, Edward and Llewellyn Monington.

Memorial services will be conducted by the family and held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta.

Friends may pay their respects to the family at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2002.

Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

It has been requested, that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 in memory of Eleanor Mae Utter.

Eugene R. Griffin

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Eugene R. Griffin passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002.

He was born Jan. 21, 1923, in Stamford, N.Y. He graduated from the Stamford Central School.

He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran.

He was a retired postal worker in Augusta, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Griffin, of Jacksonville, Fla.; his son, Dr. Rawson Griffin of Orange Park, Fla.; two daughters, Hope Atkins of Illinois and Alison Allen of Georgia; his stepdaughters, Delane Eichmiller of Illinois and Jennifer Marshall of Florida; and eight grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 1, 2002, between 3 and 5 p.m., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Griffin, 8914 Winrock Drive North.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Eugene R. Griffin's memory.

Jared Thomas Good

COOPERSTOWN — Jared Thomas Good, 22, of Cooperstown, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2002, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born on June 13, 1979, in Cooperstown, son of Thomas Warren and Margaret Ann (Lee) Good.

Our dearest, precious Jared passed away after a heroic fight against cystic fibrosis. Even in the midst of his fight, Jared was able to excel in all areas of life. A 1998 graduate of Cooperstown Central School, Jared was very involved in school activities. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the State Team of the Science Olympiad, SADD, the Choir, the Madrigal Choral Group, the Men's Vocal Ensemble, and participated in Cobleskill Days. He was given the Electronic Design Award through his involvement with the School Press Institute, was the computer editor for his Senior Yearbook, participated in his Senior Play, was champion in the Ping-Pong Tournament and was co-captain of the CCS Varsity Tennis Team. He also organized the first annual Clark Sports Center table tennis tournament and was a yearly participant in the Cooperstown Great Strides Walk-A-Thon for Cystic Fibrosis.

Jared was also honored with numerous awards for his academic achievement, including The Redmen Scholarship, The Clark Foundation Scholarship, the Syracuse University Chancellor's Scholarship, the sole male recipient of the North American Creon Family Scholarship awarded in Montreal, Canada, in 1998, the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Greater NY Scholarship, the Jesse Ridley Scholarship, and he was on the National Dean's List. His love for life allowed him to pursue many interests, such as card collecting, computer graphics/animation, playing tennis, listening to music, and just about anything that involved being in the sun.

Jared had attended Syracuse University and Hamilton College and was presently a student at the State University at Albany. He was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

He is survived by his parents, Margaret and Michael Welsh and Thomas W. Good, all of Cooperstown; his sister, Sarah Rebecca Good of Cooperstown; his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Edward Lee of Owego; paternal grandmother, Frances C. Good of Brockport; stepgrandparents, Jim and Teddie Welsh of Owego; aunts and uncles, Marian and James MacFarlane of Batavia, Barbara and Gerald Crampton of  Johnson City, Patricia and James Trek of Brockport and Christopher J. Welsh of Syracuse; cousins, Ada Lee MacFarlane of Batavia, Lester and John Crampton of  Johnson City and Trevor Welsh of Cleveland, Ohio; and his fiancι, Nicole Burt of Hartwick.

Jared was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Warren Good.

A funeral service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, March 4, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, at 82 Chestnut St. in Cooperstown, when Jared's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to The Jared Thomas Good Memorial Fund, c/o The Cystic Fibrosis Center, attn.: Dr. Ran Anbar, University Hospital, 750 East Adams Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lillian I. Palmer

UNADILLA — Lillian I. Palmer, 55, of Unadilla, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her home.

She was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Oneonta, N.Y., the daughter of Schuyler and Ella (Quick) Handy.

She was married to Lynn B. Palmer, on Jan. 20, 1968, in Laurens, N.Y.

Lillian was a graduate of Laurens Central School, Class of 1965, and a resident of Unadilla since 1968. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who will be truly missed.

She was a member of the Unadilla Center United Methodist Church and the Unadilla Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Lillian is survived by her husband, Lynn Palmer, of Unadilla; her sons, Jeffrey Palmer of Owego, N.Y., and Michael Palmer of Lexington Park, Md.; her mother-in-law and her husband, Irene and Robert  Johnson of Sidney; her sisters and brother-in-law, Donna and Joseph Tryon of Houston,  Texas, and Deborah Handy and Paula Jones, both of Ione,  Calif.; her brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Joan Handy of Gainesville, Fla., and Glen and Sheila Handy of Houston,  Texas; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Linda and Norman  Schmidt of Sherburne; her grandchildren, Samantha Palmer, Grant Palmer and Macy Palmer; also several nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Betty DeForest.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be later in Unadilla Center Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, March 3, from 2 to 5 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.

John G. Carmichael

UNADILLA — John G. Carmichael, 84, of Unadilla, N.Y., passed away Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Vestal Nursing Center, Vestal, N.Y.

He was born March 27, 1917, in Unadilla, the son of John J. and Bertha (Gager) Carmichael.

He was married to O. Jean Sherman on Dec. 16, 1944, in Los Angeles,  Calif.

John was a graduate of the Unadilla Central School Class of 1936 and was a lifelong Unadilla resident. He retired in 1980 from Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, N.Y., as a supervisor.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, Masonic Freedom Lodge #324 of Unadilla, Sidney Elks Lodge #2175, Unadilla Rod and Gun Club, trustee of the Evergreen Hill Cemetery Association, Unadilla, and the American Legion Joyce-Bell Post #578 of Unadilla.

John is survived by his wife, Jean Carmichael,of Unadilla; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Linda Carmichael of  Johnson City, N.Y., and Dale and Patricia Carmichael of Williston, Vt.; his grandchildren, Lauren, Jaclyn, Kristin, Ryan and Amanda; also a friend of many years, Robert Felske of Sidney. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Carmichael.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, at 123 Main St. in Unadilla, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.

Eleanor Mae Utter

ONEONTA — Eleanor Mae Utter, 85, of Oneonta, died Thursday Feb. 28, 2002, at her home.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, March 2, for those who would like to pay their respects.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.
