Herman Funke

WORCESTER — Herman Funke, 74, of Worcester, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Brooklyn, the son of Hermann F. and Stephanie H. (Richter) Funke.

He married the former Beatrice Baldwin on July 23, 1983, in Decatur. She survives him.

Herman moved to the area in 1954, from Brooklyn.

He was a language instructor for the U.S. Army and had attained the rank of Sergeant 1st Class during his career. Herman served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He traveled extensively while in the service and after his retirement.

He enjoyed birds and animals and enjoyed taking rides in the country.

Herman is survived by his wife, Beatrice Funke, of Oneonta; one sister-in-law, Barbara J. Baldwin of Oneonta; two brothers-in-law, Herbert C. Baldwin of Franklin and Claude N. Baldwin and his wife, Reva, of Oneonta; two cousins, Fred Fisher and his wife, Young, of Seattle, Wash., and Norman Pape and his wife, Edith, of Long Island; special nieces and nephews, Mary Anne Tucker and her husband, Scott, of  South Carolina, Michael A. Baldwin and his wife, Sandra, of Sidney, and Burton Becker and his wife, Bonnie, of Laurens. He is lso survived by special friends, Martha D. Baldwin of  South Carolina and Arthur Miller and his wife, Rita, of Virginia.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, Mr. Nelson Parks, chaplain of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, March 4, when the family will be present.

Burial will be in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

William W. Craig

DAVENPORT — William W. Craig, 57, of Davenport, died suddenly at his home on Friday, March 1, 2002.

He was born April 3, 1944, in Montague City, Mass., the son of Walter and Anna (Wolfe) Craig.

He married Janet Lawson on Aug. 16, 1964. The Craigs both graduated from  Jefferson Central School and were longtime residents of  Jefferson and recently of Davenport.

His parents and two sisters, Bernice and Ellen, predeceased him.

William is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren: his son, Master Sgt. William Craig Jr.; his wife, Melissa; his daughter Kimberly of Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, his daughter Mary Mullineaux, her husband, Bruce, and children, Erika and Nicholas of Sidney; and many nieces, nephews and great-nephews.

The family will be receiving friends at home on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, from 3 to 8 p.m.

The family requests, instead of flowers, that donations be made in William's memory to the Davenport Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Virginia Alger

SIDNEY — Virginia Alger, a resident at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi, and formerly of 57 Pleasant St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, March 2, 2002, in Delhi.

She was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Sidney, the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Cora Slawson Charles.

For several years, Virginia was employed by Keith Clark in Sidney. She retired in 1986.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Charles Henriksen of Mount Upton, and Ruth and Dale Davis of Smiths, Ala.; two sisters, Wauneita Lord of Stamford and Thelma Dalrymple of Delhi. Also surviving are five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virginia was predeceased by her son, Gerald R. Alger, on Nov. 23, 1973.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the Guilford and Mount Upton United Methodist Churches, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi, NY if desired.

Irene F. Bronson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Irene F. Bronson, 68, of Brick House Road, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, while vacationing in Humboldt, Ariz.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1933, in Chateaugay, a daughter of the late Smith and Mary King Grimshaw.

Raised and educated in Chateaugay on June 4, 1955, she married Morris Bronson in Poland. They had a devoted union of 45 years until his passing on May 5, 1995. She and her family had resided in this area for 33 years, coming from Cold Brook.

Along with raising a family of eight children, for several years she had worked at the Bella Vista in Richfield Springs.

She was a friend to many and will be remembered as a caring and helpful person. Her love was her home, children and grandchildren. Her hobby was making hand-crafted wind chimes.

Surviving are four sons, Ronald and his wife, April, Bronson of Richfield Springs, Daune and his wife, Fawn, Bronson of Amsterdam, Morris Bronson Jr., and Michael and his wife, Patty, Bronson, all of Cooperstown; four daughters, Polly Tylee and her husband, Robert, of Canajoharie, Bonnie Neuschel and her husband, John, and Irene Bond, all of Richfield Springs, Maureen Cotton and her husband, Gary, of Little Falls; three brothers, Allan Grimshaw of Georgia, Francis and his wife, Sandy, Grimshaw of Middleville, Thomas and his wife, Beverly, Grimshaw of Humboldt, Ariz.; 33 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Delbert and Frank Grimshaw, and one sister, Marion Victor.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday evening at 7 in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7.

Evelyn May Fuller

HERKIMER — Evelyn May Fuller, 65, of 690 W. German St., formerly of 38 Lake St., Richfield Springs, passed away on Saturday evening, March 2, 2002, in Valley Health Services Inc., after a long illness.

She was born on Feb. 25, 1937, in Cooperstown, daughter of the late Charles and Mertie Ethyl Thompson Jacobs.

Evelyn was raised in Burlington Flats and was educated there and in Edmeston.

On Dec. 23, 1955, she married Glenn F. Fuller Jr., in Burlington Flats, a blessed union of 42 years until his passing on Nov. 14, 1998.

Evelyn's life was devoted to her home and family. She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person.

Surviving are seven sons, Charles and his wife, Christal, Fuller of Kissimmee, Fla., Roy and his wife, Kim, Fuller of Frankfort, Glenn and his wife, Bonny, Fuller of Leonardsville, Donald and his wife, Debbie, Fuller of New Berlin, Thomas Fuller of Rome, Michael and his wife, Deb, Fuller of Cherry Valley, and William and his wife, Shawn, Fuller of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Glenda and her husband, Raymond, Dygert Jr., of Cherry Valley, and Kristie Fuller of Ilion; two brothers and their wives, Claude and Alice Jacobs of Richfield Springs, and Fred and Evelyn Jacobs of Deansboro; two sisters, Helen and her husband, Erwin, Thompson of York, Pa., and Josephine Colburn of Garrattsville; 18 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Glenn, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Peter Jacobs; and her grandson, Travis Michael Fuller.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs.

Mrs. Fuller will be laid to rest later this spring in the Burlington Flats Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m.

Carolyn B. Kane

FLY CREEK — Carolyn B. Kane, 73, of Fly Creek, died early Saturday morning, March 2, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1929, in Kemmerer, Wyo., a daughter of Joseph and Frances (Remitz) Bider Sr.

For 22 years, she was married to Everett Kane.

A graduate of the Cooperstown Central School, Class of 1947, Carolyn was employed as a telephone switchboard operator for New York Telephone in Cooperstown from 1949 until retiring in 1982.

In her retirement, she was employed part time for more than 10 years by the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown at its switchboard. In later years, she was also employed by First Choice Cleaners in Cooperstown.

She was of the Catholic faith, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and greatly enjoyed following her grandchildren around to their various sporting events.

Known by her family as "Pooh Bear," she always had a pocketful of candy that she shared with everyone she met.

Carolyn is survived by her four children, Ronald Kane and his wife, Marilyn, of South Hartwick, Robert Kane and his wife, Barbara, of Fly Creek, Rahlene Welch and her husband, Michael, of Fly Creek, and Rodger Kane and his wife, Fay, of Toddsville; 11 grandchildren, Chad Welch of Cooperstown, Renee Vigilante and her husband, Albert, of Tennessee, Eric and Amy Kane of South Hartwick, Andrea and Sean Kane of Fly Creek, Mindi and Amanda Kane, Nicole Bergman, Rodger Kane Jr., and Allison Jodway, all of Toddsville; and her nephew, Victor Joseph Fenus and his wife, Donna, of Westmoreland.

She was predeceased by her three brothers, Adolph ("Duffy"), Joseph and Victor Bider; and her sister, Frances B. Fenus.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, March 5, 2002, from 7:30 until 9, when Carolyn's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 or the Tribute Fund, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Shirley Underwood

WALTON — Shirley Mae Underwood, 76, of Loomis Brook, Walton, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Delaware Valley Hospital.

Shirley was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Masonville, the daughter of Lewis and Bernice (Barnes) Jump.

She married Kenneth Underwood on Jan. 7, 1942. He survives.

A longtime Walton resident, she worked more than 30 years at Bendix Aviation in Sidney.

She was a member of the Riverside Alliance Church in Walton and the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Her family came first in her life and she enjoyed them greatly, along with her embroidery and reading.

In addition to her husband, Kenneth, of Walton; she is survived by her son, Lawrence and his wife, Sharon, of Walton; three daughters and their husbands, Kathlyn and Samuel Bakker of Hinkley,  Calif., Rose and Dwight Phoenix of Walton and Lisa and George Haynes of Bloomville; 13 grandchildren, Lawrence Underwood Jr., Neil Underwood, Janelle Underwood, Troy Bakker, Duane Bakker, Debra Sines, John Bakker, Timothy Bakker, Tammy Phoenix, Raquel Doig, Michael Phoenix, Michelle Phoenix and Kenneth Wagner; plus 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Alliance Church in Walton, with the Rev. Edward Lowell, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Carl Butler, assisting. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call today, March 4, at the Clark & Winter Funeral Home in Walton. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Walton Emergency Squad, 61 West St., Walton NY 13856; the Delaware Valley Hospital, Titus Place, Walton NY 13856; or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820; in the name of Shirley Mae Underwood are appreciated.

Laura Mae Whitbeck

UNADILLA — Laura Mae Whitbeck of Unadilla passed from this life on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the age of 91.

She will be greatly missed, but we can be thankful that she is now resting peacefully.

Laura Mae Haynes was born Sept. 8, 1910, at the Haynes family farm in Unadilla. She was the daughter of Lynn Haynes and Nellie Barton.

In the early 1900s, Laura attended school at the one-room schoolhouse in Martinbrook.

She had lived in this area for most of her life, and attended college at Lowell School of Business in  Johnson City. She was proud of her shorthand and typing abilities.

Laura was an avid piano player, and would spend hours playing or listening to music. She also enjoyed word-search games and crossword puzzles.

Laura was a strong believer in her faith, reading the Bible daily, until she lost her sight a year ago.

Laura married Stanley Herron on July 6, 1943, and together they have one daughter, Marlena Card, of Unadilla. Laura was very close to Marlena, and traveled around the United States with her in earlier years. Laura was later widowed, and married Russell Whitbeck of Norwich. Russell is now living in the Oxford Veterans Home.

Laura's grandchildren will always have fond childhood memories of visiting her when she lived in Norwich. They would spend time with her over summer vacation, sitting in lawn chairs to watch the drive-in movie, enjoying banana splits she had made them.

They would also take turns riding her three-wheeled bicycle to the local store to buy penny candy. On most visits, she would also take them to the park, where they would play together for hours.

Everyone will remember Laura as a beautiful redhead with dazzling blue eyes.

Laura was always a lady and believed in wearing skirts every day. She also loved to wear her favorite turtlenecks with scarves and pins. Her nails were often painted a soft pink, and she smelled of Emeraude and talcum powder. She was a woman of strong conviction, but had a quiet demeanor. Laura was very happy when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit.

Ms. Whitbeck is survived by her daughter, Marlena Card of Unadilla; five grandchildren, Angela Hurd of Gilbertsville, Cynthia Hall of Gilbertsville, Joseph Barton of Governeur, Robert Barton Jr. of DeLancey and Matthew Card of New York Mills. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Nate, Brad and Gary Hurd, Adam, Luke and Cody Hall, Scott Barton, Joshua and Justin Barton, and Brittany Card.

Laura was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Lester; and a sister, Thela, who died at the early age of 26.

Laura and Thela were soul mates and shared a special bond. Laura missed Thela greatly throughout her life and spoke of her often.

Funeral services and committal will be Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla. Family and friends are welcome to attend. The Rev. Kip Stratton of the Unadilla United Methodist Church will be officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the request of Ms. Whitbeck.

Burial will be later in the family plot at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

Donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in Laura's memory. Without their help, she would not have been able to pass peacefully at her home; with dignity and loving family surrounding her.

LeRoy F. Poling

PALM BAY, Fla. — LeRoy F. Poling, 83, formerly of Garrattsville, N.Y., died at his home in Palm Bay, Fla., on Saturday, March 2, 2002.

Born in Union, Ohio, in 1919, he lived in Garrattsville until 1972, when he moved to Belle Glade, Fla.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He landed in France on D-Day and took part in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was superintendent of highways for the town of New Lisbon until 1972.

After moving to Florida, he was sanitation superintendent for the city of Belle Glade and also taught mechanics at the vocational school there. After moving to Palm Bay in 1984, he went to work for Avis as a driver.

He was especially proud of his four children and his 20 years on the Morris Central School Board of Education, several as its president.

His survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Hull Poling, of Palm Bay, Fla.; his children and their spouses, Nick and Sue Poling of Juliaetta, Ind., Jeff and Kathie Poling of Oneonta, N.Y., Sharon and Nick Lambros of Oneonta, N.Y., Bonnie Burke and Bruce Dietzen of Key West, Fla.; grandchildren, Matt, Sean and Kayla Poling, Maria and Jaclyn Lambros and Derek Burke; a brother, Charles and Pat Poling of Oneida, N.Y.; sisters, June and Richard Rollins of Garrattsville, N.Y., Billie and Ron Snyder of Belle Glade, Fla., and Florence and Robert Arnold of Burlington Flats, N.Y.

Graveside services will be held at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Fla., at noon on Tuesday.

Donations may be made to Hospice of South Brevard, 1900 Dairy Rd., West Melbourne, Fla., 32904.

Laura Mae Whitbeck
