Frederick Reynolds Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Frederick William Reynolds Jr., 70, of Chestnut Street in Cooperstown, died while on vacation early Sunday morning, March 3, 2002, at the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas,  Texas.

Fred was born on May 20, 1931, in Woonsocket, R.I., a son of Frederick William and Roby Mae (Stearns) Reynolds Sr.

He married Janet Thurlwell on Aug. 19, 1967, in Colorado Springs,  Colo.

As a young boy, Fred and his family moved from Rhode Island to Glendale,  Calif., where he graduated from Glendale College. He further pursued his education and went on to graduate from the University of Colorado and the University of  Texas.

During the Korean War, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

For 37 years, he was employed by IBM and was active in all areas of product development.

He and his family lived all over the United States during his career with IBM and finally settled in Ridgefield, Conn., where they lived for 10 years. In 1992, Fred and Jan moved from Ridgefield, Conn., to Cooperstown and, until last year, owned and operated Angelholm Bed and Breakfast on Elm Street.

Of the Episcopal faith, Fred was an extremely active and dedicated member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, where he served in many capacities including senior warden, lay Eucharistic minister, chalice bearer and Stephen minister.

He was also the founding president of the Empire State Bed and Breakfast Association and was active with the Cooperstown Rotary Club and the Executive Service Corps in Oneonta.

He was a big man in many respects and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Fred is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jan, of Cooperstown; two sons, Dean Curtis and his wife, Susan, of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, and Frederick William Reynolds III, Esq., and his fiance, Gretchen Andry, of Dallas,  Texas; one daughter, Nancy Ellen Franklin of Houston,  Texas; eight grandchildren; his father, Frederick William Reynolds Sr., of Hemet,  Calif.; one brother, Robert Reynolds and his wife, Donna, of Reno, Nev.; one sister, Mae Schubert and her husband, Richard, of Glendale,  Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

The Office of the Burial of the Dead with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

A reception will follow in the Sill Parish House at Christ Church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Food Bank, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frances  White

ONEONTA — Frances  White, 79, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Houghton, Mich., the daughter of Chester and Evaden (Thatcher) Smith.

Frances attended Suomi College in Michigan before entering Purdue University, where she received a bachelor of science degree in home economics, majoring in nutrition, in 1944.

She became a facility member at Penn State University doing experimental work in nutritional studies.

In 1946, Frances married Donald  White and accompanied him as he pursued his graduate work at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

She and her husband moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., then to Madison, Wis., where they lived for 12 years. In 1959, they moved to Oneonta when Mr.  White joined the faculty at the State University College at Oneonta, and have been residents of Oneonta since that time.

She is survived by her husband, Donald, at home; one daughter, Vivian  White of Seattle, Wash.; three sons and their wives, Ronald and Patricia of Bloomville, Chris and Mary of Greenville, N.C., and Dale and Suzanne of Oneonta; eight grandchildren, Kristin, Patrick, Alex, Felicia, Heather, Jessie, Evan and Melissa; a sister, Mildred Bennett and her husband, Edward, of Berkley,  Calif.; her brother, Douglas and wife, Margaret, of Hartford, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, where she was very active until her illness of rheumatoid arthritis limited her former active life.

Mrs.  White was also a member of the P.E.O. Women's Group.

She was a devoted, loving and giving wife and mother and was a homemaker by choice, preferring to practice that art, rather than seeking a career.

Frances will be grievously missed by all those that had the privilege of knowing her.

Private funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Phillip Lord, retired minister, officiating.

Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Otsego County SPCA Hyde Park, Cooperstown NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Doris E. Shannon

SCHENEVUS — Doris E. Shannon, 81, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Highlands, N.J., the daughter of Frank and Ruth (Parker) O'Neil.

She married Harold William Shannon at All Saints Church in Highlands, N.J., on Dec. 25, 1939. He predeceased her in 1980.

Doris lived in Greenwich for more than 45 years.

She worked at many jobs and retired from Argyle Catheter in 1985.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Highlands, N.J.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret and husband, Richard Tucker, of Schenevus and Susan and husband, Donald Rundblad, of Decatur; two sons, William and wife, Erica Shannon of North Easton and George Shannon; two sisters, Mae Rugg and Barbara Andrews, both of Highlands, N.J.; two brothers, William and wife, Margurita O'Neil, of Highlands, N.J., and Edward O'Neil of Atlantic Highlands, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

As per Doris' wishes, there will be no calling hours and no services.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Doris to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Richard Hugh Evans

WEST WINFIELD — Richard Hugh Evans, 76, passed away March 3, 2002, at home.

He was born March 24, 1925, in the town of Plainfield, son of the late William Richard and Annie Parry Evans.

He was educated in West Winfield schools and was a World War II Army veteran, serving in France in the European Theater, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

Richard married Eleanor Shaul on Oct. 2, 1948, at the Universalist Church in Schuyler Lake.

Mr. Evans was truck driver for local businesses, including Beacon Feeds, and most recently George Welch Sons and Ferguson Fuels.

He was a member of the West Winfield Federated Church, a 50-year member of the West Winfield Fire Department, having served as fire chief, a member and past president of Herkimer County Firemen's Association, member of Winfield Lodge No. 581 F&AM, Winfield Chapter 418 OES, serving as past patron 1978, 1980 and 1990, past grand sentinel 1996, DAV and VFW.

Besides his wife, Eleanor; he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Monica and R. Peter Munford and Marlene and Thomas Gifford; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard B. and Beth Evans and Rodney and Barbara Evans; sisters, Elizabeth Seamon, Jane Land and Kathleen Land; brothers, John Evans, Russell Evans and Robert Evans; grandchildren, Michael Munford, M. Gregory Munford, Tommy and Melissa Gifford, Joshua and Shayla Gifford, Jonathan Gifford, Elizabeth and Alan King, Jacob Evans, Jordan Evans and Meghan Evans; great-grandchildren, Ally and Ashley King and Sydney Gifford; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.

He was predeceased by brothers, Wilbur O. Evans and Stanley Evans.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Federated Church in West Winfield.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home in West Winfield. Winfield Lodge No. 581 will have ritualistic services Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by Winfield Chapter No. 418 OES.

Interment will be in Unadilla Forks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider Eastern Star-Masonic Mount Markham Scholarship Fund or the West Winfield Ambulance Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Alexander Thomas

HARTWICK — Mr. Alexander A. Thomas, 81, of Hartwick, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 30, 1920, a son of Adolf and Kathryn (Grynkiewicz) Thomas.

Alexander attended schools in Brooklyn.

He enlisted in the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, resulting in a permanent disability.

He married Barbara Smith on Nov. 2, 1964. They moved to the area in 1971, and settled in Hartwick in 1978.

Alex was a member of the VFW in Garden City Park, Long Island, for many years.

He enjoyed electronics, dogs and deep sea fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Thomas, of Hartwick; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Alexander and Polly Thomas of Hartwick; two grandsons, Robert and Todd Mayton; a sister and brother-in-law, Estelle and Walter Chmara, and their son, Gregory; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Cecelia Smith; a sister-in-law, Adriane Sutton; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Janet and Gerry Starks and Patricia and Bill Pokon; a sister-in-law, Gloria Smith; a brother-in-law, Paul King; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Mary King; and a brother-in-law, Robert Smith.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Church in Cooperstown, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. John Rosson, pastor, officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring at the Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga.

The family of Alexander A. Thomas can't thank Hospice enough for their care and attention they provided.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820 or to the World War II Monument, P.O. Box 96766,  Washington, D.C. 20090-6766.

Milford.William Harris

ROSEBOOM — Mr. William Harris, 80, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, after a short illness.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1921, in Richmondville, the son of Fred and Lila (Snyder) Harris.

On Feb. 27, 1944, he married Marjorie A. Moore in Harpersfield. She survives.

A lifetime area resident, he was a veteran of World War II and worked as a heavy equipment operator for S.J. Grove and Sons, Engineer Local 106.

Survivors, besides his wife of 58 years, Marjorie A. Harris, of Roseboom; include a daughter, Bonnie Kay L. Loper; a granddaughter, Susan J. Loper, both of Saratoga Springs; a brother, Richard Harris and his wife, Marion, of Sprakers; and a sister, Madlyn Wright of Knox.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc. in Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Contributions in Mr. Harris' memory may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Julia Clark

ONEONTA — Julia (Raymond) Clark, 97, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Oneonta, formerly of Springville.

She was the wife of the late Willis G. Clark Jr.

She is the beloved mother of Mary E. (late Bryan) Sheesley, Barbara (Robert) Benninger and Willis (Mary Jane) Clark III; grandmother of seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Elizabeth Dutcher, Norris and Virginia Raymond.

Friends may call Thursday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 2809 East Church St., Eden, at which time funeral services will be held.

Arrangements are by Wentland Funeral Home of North Collins.

Mary Alice Grant

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Mary Alice Potter Grant, 76, of Gainesville, Fla., and formerly of Toddsville, N.Y., died early Monday morning, March 4, 2002, at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, following an extended illness.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1926, in Cooperstown, N.Y., a daughter of Bennett O. Potter Sr. and Hannah (Gaughan) Potter.

She married Louis G. Grant in July of 1952, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Grant died on May 21, 1987.

Mary Alice was raised in Toddsville and graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1942.

Following graduation she moved to Schenectady, where she worked for General Electric. It was while she lived in Schenectady that she met her future husband and they continued to live there until 1960, when they moved to Florida. After Lou's death, Mary Alice became a staff assistant for the Code's Enforcement Office of the city of Gainesville until her retirement.

She is survived by her three children, Paul Grant of Gainesville, Fla., and Katherine Grant Murphy and Elizabeth A. Grant, both of High Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren, Sean, Ronnie, Ricky and Renee Murphy, also of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Joan Potter Field in 2000; and her brother, Bennett Potter Jr. in 1999.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Saturday, March 9, 2002, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the Save the Children Federation, 54 Wilton Rd., Westport, Conn. 06880.

Florence E. Musk

PITTSFIELD — Florence E. Musk, 94 years, of Pittsfield, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002, in Norwich.

She was born Oct. 7, 1907, in the town of Gilbertsville, the daughter of Alvin and Margaret (Watts) Austin.

She married Clifton W. Musk on Nov. 2, 1929. He predeceased her in 1978.

She spent her childhood in the Gilbertsville area. She was a graduate of Mount Upton Central School.

She is survived by her daughter, Ada Mae Musk Burrs of South New Berlin; adoptive son, Paul Wayne Musk of New Berlin; and two sisters, Esther Ingalls of Franklin and Irene Phillips of Sidney.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Mary Elizabeth in 1933; two sisters, Ethel Ingalls and Lina Barnes; and one brother, Henry Alvin Austin.

She worked as a child-care provider, farmer and nurse's aide for the Chase Nursing Home.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin. She was a member of the Home Bureau & Grange.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 7, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin officiating.

Interment will be in Copes Corners Cemetery in the town of Gilbertsville.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home of New Berlin.
