Helen Parry

MORRIS — Helen Parry, 82, of Morris, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born in Scranton, Pa., on Dec. 15, 1919, the daughter of Charles S. and Dora F. (Felts) Hildebrand.

She married Albert William Parry in Angels, Pa., on June 4, 1943. He passed away Feb. 26, 1982.

She was a homemaker and had worked at Bresee's Department Store in her younger years.

She was of the Catholic faith and was a charter member of the Morris VFW.

She enjoyed crocheting until her eyesight failed her.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Shylene Parry and her companion, Allen Robinson, of Morris; and her two sons, Robert W. Parry and his wife, Marie, of Amanda, Ohio, and David Parry of Crow Creek,  Texas. She was also blessed with two grandsons, James and Steven Parry.

It was Helen's request that no funeral service or calling hours be held.

She was cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris, and interment of her cremains will be on May 3, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Ronald Joseph Pasho

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ronald Joseph Pasho, age 71, of Gould Avenue, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1930, in Syracuse, son of the late John R. and Mary Kollar Pasho.

John was raised and educated in both Syracuse and Madison.

An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served with the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.

For many years he worked as a painter for WT Grant Co. in Mattydale, retiring in 1982.

Surviving him are his special friend, Judy Timberlin, of Rosewood Terrace; three brothers, Ralph Pasho of Utica, Fred and his wife, Mary Pasho, of Syracuse, and John R. Pasho of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, June Argeese of Skaneateles and Miriam and her husband, Eugene Piltcher, of Fabius; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, William Pasho.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, at 40 W. James St. in Richfield Springs. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour before the memorial service.

Edward Gloeckler

SIDNEY — Edward Gloeckler of Sidney died unexpectedly on Monday, March 4, 2002, at home.

He is the son of James and Julia (Hall) Gloeckler.

Edward served his country in the United States Air Force.

He was employed by Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Mr. Gloeckler is survived by his mother, Julia Gloeckler of Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Terri Baciuska of Syracuse; daughter and son-in-law, Mikki and Keith DeVost of Unadilla; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Richard Alcott of Binghamton; and two grandchildren, Ronald and Elizabeth Weeden of Franklin.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Funeral and committal services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 E. Main St., Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

David William Schutz

WEST WINFIELD — David William Schutz, infant son of David Edward and Cynthia R. Amos Schutz, passed away March 4, 2002.

He was born Jan. 15, 2002, in Albany.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Kerry and Katrina; maternal grandparents, the Rev. R. Michael and Carol Amos; paternal grandparents, Daniel and Teresa Schutz; and other loving family members.

The funeral service will be Thursday, March 7, at 4 p.m. at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home in West Winfield. Interment will be in Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 p.m. until the funeral time.

Wendelin A. Mertz

UNADILLA — Wendelin "Wendy" A. Mertz, 81, of Unadilla, passed away March 6, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 2, 1920, son of the late Wendelin and Anastasia C. Hoffman Mertz in Brooklyn.

Wendy served his country in the Army Air Corps in Korea.

He was a car salesman in the Tri-Town area since 1970.

Wendy married Sandra Edwards in 1989 in Unadilla.

He was a past member of the Sidney American Legion and a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney.

Mr. Mertz is survived by his wife, Sandra Mertz, of Unadilla; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Mertz of Canajoharie, Steven and Beverly Mertz of Otego and Randall O. and Annette Mertz of Sidney; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Ted Roberts of Rome, Deborah McGee of Sidney and Wendy Lee and Tim McGrady of Kenai, Alaska; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Geneva Mertz of Waddington and Raymond and Dolores Mertz of Ocala, Fla.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gertrude Lerwick of Coventry, Catherine and Robert Davy of Coventry and Rita and Leo Terry of Pine Beach, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Infant brother, Arthur; and sister, Margaret Riley, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Nellie Gill

SIDNEY CENTER — Mrs. Nellie French Gill of Center Street, Sidney Center, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Mrs. Gill was born July 14, 1905, in Franklin Depot, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Goodrich) French.

She graduated from Walton High School. Most of her life was spent in the Sidney Center area.

For several years she worked for Bendix in Sidney.

She was a member of the Baptist Church in Sidney Center and was its oldest member.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Jenkins, and son-in-law, Richard Jenkins, of Bainbridge; her son, Jack Gill of Bainbridge; and her daughter-in-law, Janice Gill of Sidney. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gill was predeceased by her children, Patricia Gill, William Gill and Barbara Schultz. She was also predeceased by her three sisters, Nina Stanley, Dorothy Morenus and Marjorie French; and her three brothers, George, Clayton and Clark French.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., at 179 Main St. in Unadilla.

The family will receive friends at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. on Saturday, March 9, 2002, from noon to 2 p.m.

Burial will be in the spring at Highland Hill Cemetery in Sidney Center.

Contributions in Mrs. Gill's memory may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad, Main Street, Sidney Center, NY 13839.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.

Lawrence C. Van Curen

ONEONTA — Lawrence C. Van Curen, 87, of Oneonta, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Fox Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 1, 1914, in Oneonta, the son of Charles and Mabel (Skillen) Van Curen.

He married Grace Lord on July 7, 1943, in Louisville, Ky.

Mr. Van Curen served with the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater of operations.

Mr. Van Curen was a former employee of the D&H Railway. After retirement, he worked at Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta and then he worked in the maintenance department at the State University College at Oneonta until 1976.

He was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Oneonta American Legion.

Mr. Van Curen is survived by his wife at home; a brother and his wife, George and Eleanor Van Curen of Oneonta; a sister, Mrs. Frederick (Dorothy) Beams of Schenevus; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, at 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating.

Those who wish may call at the funeral home one hour before the funeral service on Friday.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Blind Work Association, 55  Washington St., Binghamton, NY 13901-3770 or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Julia Kilanowski

DELANCEY — Julia V. Kilanowski, 90, of Terry Clove, DeLancey, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

The daughter of Joseph and Sophie (Wozniak) Osada, she was born Jan. 27, 1912, in Brooklyn, and married Boleslau A. Kilanowski in 1931. He died May 27, 1973.

A homemaker, Julia came to DeLancey in 1961 from Brooklyn. After her husband's death, she lived in Massapequa for several years, returning to DeLancey in 1992. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church in Delhi and had been a resident at Countryside since January 1996.

Her son, Joseph F. Kilanowski, of DeLancey, died two months ago.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Rosemary Kilanowski; six grandsons, Joseph, Nicholas, Andrew, Christopher, Matthew and Eric Kilanowski; a sister, Ann Ciganek; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call from 1 to 5 p.m. today, Thursday, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, and a funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, at St. James R.C. Church in Seaford, where Julia was a former parishioner, with burial following at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son of Delhi.

Mathilde Reiter

VENICE, Fla. — Mathilde "Tillie" Reiter, 84, a resident of Venice, Fla., formerly of Guilford, N.Y., died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at the Whispering Sands Care Center in Venice, Fla.

She was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was raised in Valley Stream, N.Y.

In 1942, she married Michael V. Reiter, and in 1947, they moved to Guilford, N.Y.

She was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Norwich, N.Y.

In August of 1982, they moved to Florida where she has been active at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Michael V. Reiter.

She is survived by two sons, William and wife, Edith Reiter, of Clinton, N.Y., and Keith Reiter of Guilford, N.Y.; two sisters, Sigrid Tenden of Los Angeles,  Calif., and Edith Dean of Norwich, N.Y.; three nieces, Marlene Tenden of Los Angeles,  Calif., Sandra Rydewald of Sweden, and Candy Midkiff of Lopez, Wash.; three special lifelong friends, Ethel Thierer and Florence (Babe) Unterweger, both of Florida, and Bernie Wahlberg of Bainbridge, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, with the Rev. Jeffrey R. Gross officiating.

The family requests memorials to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 800 S. Tamiami Trail, Venice, FL 34285.

The Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home in Punta Gorda is serving the family.

Karl Schwed Sr.

OTEGO — Karl Rudolph Schwed Sr., 79 years, of Otego, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born May 9, 1922, in Bronx, the son of Karl Johann and Emilie (Vogeltanz) Schwed.

Karl was a United States Water Tender 3rd Class Navy veteran, having served in World War II during the Pacific campaign aboard the USS Vincennesas.

After his discharge he moved to the Otego area where he married Emma McLeod on July 29, 1961, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

While in Oneonta, Karl had worked for Sampson's Flooring, Brooks House of Bar-B-Q's, OURS Associates, Opportunities For Otsego and the State University College at Oneonta.

Karl enjoyed watching baseball and football on television, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and being a full-time grandfather.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and had attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Karl will be deeply missed by his family and many, many friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Emma, of Otego; his four children and their spouses, Emma and Fred Siems Jr. of Wells Bridge, Fred and Kim (Pearce) Schwed of Oneonta, Karl R. Schwed Jr. of Otego, and Eric Schwed of Otego; three grandchildren, Rebecca-Lyn Siems of Wells Bridge, Olivia Schwed of Oneonta, and Zachary Siems of Wells Bridge; and one grandson on the way; one sister, Frieda Fankhauser of Castleton; one niece, Steffie Halpin of East Greenbush; and one cousin, Maria Nickmann, and her family.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Baker, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Saturday, March 9, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m. at which time friends may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, NY 13417, the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 or to the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206 in loving memory of Karl Rudolph Schwed Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Gerald Adee

VESTAL — Gerald Fredrick Adee, 79, went to be with his Lord, March 7, 2002, at Vestal Nursing Center, Vestal.

He was born Oct. 15, 1922, the son of Joseph and Matilda (Sprague) Adee, in New Kingston.

He married Marjorie C. Case on Oct. 26, 1944, in Otego.

Gerald and Marjorie and their family lived in Oneonta until 1968, when Gerald was transferred to a new position with New York State Electric and Gas Corp., from Goodyear Lake to Binghamton. He worked for NYSEG for 39 years, retiring in August 1983.

Gerald was a longtime member of the Presbyterian church in both Oneonta and  Johnson City. He served as both a trustee and a deacon for many years.

He was a charter and life member of the Oneonta Amateur Radio Club, a 50-year ham radio operator and was known as K2DLB to other ham operators.

He also enjoyed his antique cars and belonged to the Antique Automobile Club of America-Iroquois Region.

He also served in the US Army during World War II.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers and a sister-in-law, William and Edward and Catherine; an infant sister, Mary Elizabeth; a son-in-law, John Torrey; and his mother and father-in-law, Allen and Beatrice Case.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Barbara L. Torrey, Oneonta, and Kathy A. (Roger) Drumm,  Johnson City; son, Brian S. Adee, Vestal; grandsons, Tim and Philip Drumm,  Johnson City; sister, Gertrude Faulkner (Curtis), Chenango Bridge; brothers-in-law, Allen W. Case (Gloria), Unadilla, and George Case (Robin), Bangor, Maine; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of  Johnson City, with his pastor, the Rev. Robert T. Peak, officiating.

The family will be in attendance at the Barber Memorial Home Inc., 428 Main St.,  Johnson City on Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at church from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Interment will be at Vestal Hills Cemetery, Vestal.

For those wishing to remember Gerald with a contribution rather than flowers, please send your donation to the First Presbyterian Church, 2 Main St.,  Johnson City, 13790-1995.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Vestal Nursing Center especially those from Magnolia Lane.
