Milton Tomlinson

HALCOTTSVILLE — Milton (Tommy) Tomlinson, 86, of Hacottsville, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville.

He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Dunraven, the son of John and Edna Tomlinson.

He married Allegra Clark on July 2, 1946, in Endicott.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Tommy worked for heating and plumbing contractors in the Kingston area and for a time was self-employed in the business.

He lived in Halcottsville since moving back from Kingston in 1977.

He was a member of Local 201 of the Plumbing & Steamfitters Union.

He was a very good hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Allegra Tomlinson, of Halcottsville; his son, John Tomlinson of Halcottsville; his daughter, Carrie George of Albany; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jessica; nieces, Donna Doughtery, Terri Finch, Nancy Breen, Cathy Tomlinson and Marie Grimm.

He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Edwin and Albert Tomlinson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Margaretville, where the Office of the Burial of the Dead will be celebrated with the Rev. James Clarke officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Halcottsville Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Contributions in memory of Milton Tomlinson may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church or St. Judes Children Hospital.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Helen E. Palackas

OTEGO — Mrs. Helen E. Lacek Palackas, Main Street, Otego, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Binghamton following an illness.

She was born in Larksville, Pa., on Oct. 8, 1918, the daughter of the late Andrew and Dorothy Yosh Lacek.

She attended school in Larksville. She was employed at the Base Exchange at Griffiss Air Force Base until her retirement in 1975.

She was an active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Rome.

After moving to Meshoppen, Pa., in 1985, she was active with St. Joachim's Parish.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred G.; granddaughter, Jennifer Palackas; brothers, John, Joseph, Andrew and Gaise; a sister, Lydia Maksimik.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sue Palackas, with whom she resided; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Brian Winchester of Bloomington, Ind.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Kristin, Richard Palackas and Joshua, Noah, Erin Winchester; sisters. Mrs. Joseph (Josephine) Ploski of Larksville, Pa., and Mrs. Anna Longo of Rome; and a brother; Thomas of Tamaqua, Pa.

A funeral was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, from the Williams Funeral Home, 114 W. Main St., Plymouth, Pa. Interment followed at St. Stephen's Cemetery, Lehman.

Memorial donations may be made to a local hospice.

Jason Jenkins

BAINBRIDGE — Jason Jenkins, 22, of Cemetery Road, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, March 9, 2002, in Port Huron, Mich.

He was born Sept. 3, 1979, in Sidney, the son of Daniel and Thelma Krom Jenkins.

Jason was a 1997 graduate of the Bainbridge-Guilford High School, Bainbridge.

He was employed by Bonkers Flooring of Temecula,  Calif.

He is survived by his parents, Daniel and Thelma Jenkins; paternal grandparents, Richard and Betty Jenkins; maternal grandmother, Hilda Krom; two brothers, Christopher Hamilton and Kelly and Angela Jenkins; three sisters, Amy Johnson, Christine and Chad Wilson, and Jonie Jenkins; and two nephews, Tyler  Johnson and Justin Wilson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. Wednesday until services at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in the West Bainbridge Cemetery, West Bainbridge.

Neilon J. Ainslie

LINCOLN, Neb. — Neilon J. Ainslie, 73, Lincoln, Neb., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in an auto accident near Parkston, S.D. He had been visiting in Rapid City and had decided to take an apartment there.

He was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Hartwick, N.Y., the son of James and Nina Ainslie.

He was proud of the fact that he graduated fourth in his class at Hartwick High School until he was forced to admit he had only six classmates.

He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy.

He was married to Grace Buckbee of Warwick, N.Y., March 26, 1954.

He graduated from Cornell University in 1956 and was proud of his Ivy League pedigree.

He then worked 28 years in hospitality services management with jobs in Indianapolis, Ind., Falls Church, Va., Dansville, Ill., Omaha, Neb., Sioux City, Iowa, Manhattan, Kan., and Salina, Kan. He retired to Lincoln, Neb., in 1984.

Neilon was affable, humorous, personable, happy-go-lucky and optimistic. He had a full life, loved many and was loved by all.

He kept short accounts and he acknowledged God's providential care over the affairs of his life.

He was proud of the "no-hitter" he pitched while at Hartwick High School, only 10 miles from Cooperstown, N.Y., home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

His interests included family, travel, poker and cribbage. He had a love for the outdoors and at the age of 72 floated on a rubber raft down the Snake River in Wyoming, with his children and grandchildren.

He was a Methodist and a member of the Lincoln Cribbage League, Korean War Veterans Association and, in years past, the Norwegian Choir.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Grace Ainslie, Overland Park, Kan.; four children, Jim Ainslie, Kenewick, Wash., Edie Green, Overland Park, Kan., Steve Ainslie, Jackson, Wyo., and Andy Ainslie, Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Helen Bristol, Argyle, N.Y., and Alice Gardella, Oneonta, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

Public memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2002, at Rimrock Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Robert Graham officiating.

A luncheon will follow at the church.

Inurnment will be in Hartwick Village Cemetery, Hartwick, N.Y., at a later date.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Helen M. Decker

WEST WINFIELD — Helen M. Decker, 71, of West Winfield, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born March 8, 1931, in Holmesville, the daughter of Howard and Meda (Maine) Davis.

She married Roger H. Decker on Aug. 11, 1956, in Leonardsville.

Helen was a past member of the Unadilla Forks Rebecca Lodge, and the West Winfield Fire Department Auxiliary.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed adorning her yard with flowers, being a demonstrator for the Friendly Toy Party Co., and she spent many hours crocheting for family and friends.

Helen had a competitive nature in bingo; she was a Mom's Mom and instilled in her family the importance of family.

Helen will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Roger, of 46 years; her children and their spouses, Theresa and Dennis Mayne, David and Linda Decker, and Darryl and Mitzi Decker; six grandchildren, Paula, Alan and Greg Mayne, Kenneth, Donald and Bradley Decker; her sister, Nellie Tanney; and sister-in-law, Lois Davis.

She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Liddle; and her brother, Lester Davis.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jerry Race officiating.

Calling hours are Tuesday, March 12, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Edmeston Union Cemetery in the spring.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to either the West Winfield Emergency Squad, or the New Hartford Area Hospice, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413.

John P. Spargo

MAHOPAC — John P. (the Rev. Paul) Spargo, of Mahopac, died March 9, 2002, at Somers Manor. He was 84.

He was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Elmira, to Jessie and Wilhelmina Pock Spargo.

He married Ruth Hubbard on July 7, 1943, in Wells Bridge.

He graduated from Milford Central School, Milford, in 1935. He graduated from Philadelphia School of the Bible in 1942; he received a three-year bachelor certificate in theology from Nyack College in 1949.

He was a staff sergeant during World War II and Korea 79th Infantry Division No. 304 and served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

He was a clergyman in Vermont and New York from 1949 to 1956.

He worked as a clerk in First National Stores 1956-1970. He was a U.S. Postal carrier for the Mahopac post office from 1970 to 1982, when he retired.

He was a member of Putnam County AARP, former pastor of Kent and Fishkill Baptist Church and a member of the Patterson Baptist Church where he was a former associate pastor.

His wife, Ruth; and four sisters, Mildred Monroe, East Springfield, Helen Spargo, Cooperstown, Nina Rose, Oneonta, and Leona Spargo, Sidney, survive him.

Visiting will be on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Adams-Cordovano Funeral Home, 15 Church St., (off Route 6) Carmel.

A funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Halstead Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Montrose Bible Conference, Montrose, Pa.

Gordon E. Hull

EDMESTON — Gordon E. Hull, 75, of Edmeston, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born July 8, 1926, in Burlington Flats, the son of Andy C. and Mary Blanche (Bull) Hull.

He married Anna L. Mabe on March 7, 1954. She predeceased him on Dec. 6, 2000.

Gordon had been previously employed by Kraft Foods in South Edmeston until his retirement.

He was an avid hunter mainly enjoying deer, pheasant and partridge.

Gordon served his country from 1948-54, in the United States Army, and was a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his stepchildren, Adonica Burns and Stephen Huffman; a daughter-in-law, Loretta, and son-in-law, Michael; six grandchildren, Erica and her husband, Paul Perrer, Terri, Christy, Amy and her husband, Robert Smith, Anthony and Stephen; two great-grandchildren; his cousin, Elaine; sister-in-law, Josephine Hull; and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Interment will be in Burlington Green Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Gordon's memory to the Edmeston Emergency squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Venona E. Orr

ONEONTA — Venona E. Orr of Oneonta, passed away Monday, March 11, 2002, at Willow Point Nursing Home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick D. Orr; two infant children; parents, David Henry Luquer and Anna F. (Fellows) Luquer Peebles; sisters, Genevieve Broas and Florence Donahue; and a brother, David Luquer.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, V. Anne and Howard Bellingham,  Johnson City; a son and daughter-in-law, David B. and Sue Orr, Wellsville, Ohio; three grandchildren and their spouses, Marie and Randy Rudik, Diane and Gary Suever, Stephen and Susan Bellingham; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Eherts, Middletown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Ann Luquer, Seattle, Wash., and Robert and Louise Peebles, Oneonta; and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home Inc., 150 Main St.,  Johnson City, on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m.

There will be no funeral service.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

David Johnson

WALTON — David Johnson, 61, of Walton, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Henry and Ruby (Cryer) Johnson.

David is survived by a sister, Suzanne Cooley of Hammond, Ind.; as well as his many friends in the Broome Developmental program and Delaware County ARC.

A service to celebrate the life of David  Johnson will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Lyon Brothers-Way Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Julia M. Clark

ONEONTA — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Julia M. Clark, who passed away March 3, 2002, will be held at the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, on Friday, March 15, 2002, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Blind Work Association, 55  Washington St., Binghamton, NY 13905.

Howard B. Conklin

BOVINA CENTER — Howard B. Conklin, 84, formerly of Bovina Center, died March 12, 2002, at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock, Pa.

He was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Shavertown, the son of Benjamin and Margaret (Davis) Conklin.

He married Theresa Hobbie on Oct. 12, 1945. She predeceased him.

Mr. Conklin owned his own dairy farm in Bovina for many years and belonged to the Bovina Center United Presbyterian Church; the Bovina Fish and Game Club; Bovina Fire Department and served as a Bovina town assessor for many years.

A son, Howard M. (Marty) and his wife, Mary Conklin, of Hamden; a son-in-law, Harrison (Butch) Morgan, Port Jervis; two sisters, Emma Barnes, Roxbury, and Hazel Filupeit, Hampton, Conn.; two brothers, Floyd Conklin, Middleburg, Pa., and Mervin Conklin, Walton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren survive.

His wife and a daughter, Betty Marie Morgan, and his brother John predeceased him.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

Burial will be later at Bovina Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Bovina Fire Department, Bovina Center, NY.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
