Edith M. Daly

ONEONTA — Edith M. Daly, 77, of Oneonta, died Thursday, March 13, 2002, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Christopher and Marion (Lott) Daly.

Edith graduated from the University of  Pennsylvania with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. However, she pursued work in the Episcopal Church, beginning as a paid organist and choir member during college.

She earned her master's degree in theology at Windham House/Union Theological Seminary, then affiliated with Columbia University, in New York City, and went on to serve in various parishes working in Christian education, beginning in Ames, Iowa. After a career of more than 20 years in Christian education with the Episcopal Church headquarters in Greenwich, Conn., she made a career change and earned a Ph.D. in counseling at The Ohio University in 1970.

Edith joined Hartwick College in 1970 as a member of the counseling center. She then became director of institutional research for several years. She retired from Hartwick in August of 1991 as assistant to the vice president of academic affairs. In 1994, the Hartwick College Board of Trustees named Edith associate vice president emeritus.

In her retirement, Edith enjoyed continuing her active membership in her book group. She joined the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Auxiliary through which she worked in the gift shop. She was also active with the auxiliary newsletter and cookbook editing.

She was a founding member and member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Continuing Adult Learning, adamantly believing in a lifetime love of learning. She became an avid supporter of Catskill Area Hospice in her last few years. She continued to enjoy classical music, entertaining, keeping track of her family members, and certainly her much loved dog, Scottie.

She is survived by a brother, Brian Daly and his wife, Isabel, of Medford Lees, N.J.; four nieces, Barbara Metcalf and husband, Tom, of Berkley,  Calif., Florence Mini and husband, Michael, of Philadelphia, Pa., Susan Marsh and husband, David, of Longmeadow, Mass., Ruth Arnold and husband, Ken, of Houston,  Texas; and one nephew, William Daly and wife, Kate, of Langhorne, Pa.

She is also survived by many grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, her long time friends Susan and Douglas Mayer of Northport, Maine; her godson, the Rev. Peter W. Mayer of  Washington, D.C.; and a goddaughter, Melissa Roan Naegelin of Boston, Mass.

There will be no calling hours.

At Edith's request, a memorial service will be held at Shineman Chapel on the Hartwick College campus on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. Her godson, the Rev. Peter W. Mayer will officiate. A reception with family members will follow.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Edith's name to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY or The Center for Continuing Adult Learning, 31 Maple St., Oneonta NY 14820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Edna B. Chase

ONEONTA — Mrs. Edna B. Chase, 92, of Oneonta and formerly of Pierstown and Middlefield, died Thursday evening, March 14, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on June 15, 1909, in Wadesville, Ind., a daughter of Edward and Cora (Endicott) Forcum. She married Lewis E. Chase on June 15, 1937, at home in Whig Corners. Mr. Chase died on Nov. 6, 1973.

At the age of 8, she and her family moved to the Cooperstown area and she attended a one-room schoolhouse in Hartwick. Following her graduation from the Knox School in Cooperstown, she was employed on the wait staff by the Clarke family at their residence, Hyde Hall. After her marriage she devoted herself to her home. In the early 1980s she moved to the Main Street Apartments in Oneonta and resided there until becoming a resident of the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in 1999.

Mrs. Chase was currently a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, as well as, the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown and at one time was a member of the former Toddsville Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Home Bureau of the Otsego County Cooperative Extension, Pierstown Grange No. 793, and later Red Creek Valley Grange No. 1583. She was also a member of the Oneonta Garden Club

She is survived by eight nieces, Beverly Chase and her husband William Anton, of Venice, Fla., Mary Chase and her husband Bobby Richardson, of Milton, Fla., Cora Wikoff and her husband, Walter, of Cherry Valley, Ellen Coon and her husband, Douglas, of Morris, Ann Morton and her husband, Norman, of Garrattsville, Charlotte Harrington and her husband, George, of Morris, Barbara Ort and her husband, Bob, and Iola Borton and her husband, Wally, all of Morenci, Mich.; six nephews, Stephen Chase and his wife, Barbara, of Georgia, James Chase and his wife, Edna, of Fly Creek, David Chase and his wife, Betty, of Hartwick Seminary, Charles Markel and his wife, Sandra, of Milford, Willard Douglas of West Winfield, and Lawrence Markel and his wife, Catherine, of Waldron, Mich.; two cousins, Russell W. Matthews and his wife, Peggy, of Evansville, Ind. and Gerald Matthews and his wife, Rosemary, of Elberfeld, Ind.; 15 great-nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Ernest Chase, John and Betty Chase and Esther Markel, all of Cooperstown; and a very close friend, Wanda Kubiak of Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor, officiating. The committal service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2002, in the Hartwick Cemetery with the Rev. Bonebrake, officiating.

Friends and family may call this evening, Saturday, March 16, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 112 Chestnut St., Cooperstown.

Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ruth Sporer

PARK RIDGE COUNTY, Ill. — Ruth Hane (Fenner) Sporer, 74, died on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in the Palliative Care Hospice Center of Skokie, Ill.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1927, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Gerald Milo and Margaret Elizabeth Hane Fenner.

Raised and educated in Herkimer, she graduated from Herkimer High School in the Class of 1945. Ruth continued her education, graduating from Ohio State University with a bachelor of science in education in 1948. She received her master's degree in psychology from Syracuse University in 1949.

Soon after completing her education, she moved to Illinois where she raised her family along with pursuing a career for more than 30 years as a school psychologist with the public school system in the south suburbs of Chicago. She retired in 1994.

Surviving are four daughters, Susan J. Sporer and her friend, Mary Cameli, of Chicago Ill., Sara A. Marienthal and her husband, Frederic III, of Boulder,  Colo., Jennifer L. Oosterbaan and her husband, Ronald, of Park Forest, Ill., Abigail M. Wingen and her husband, Neal, of Algonquin, Ill.; two brothers, and their wives, Donald M. and Mary Ellen Fenner of Springfield Center, Dr. Bradford J. and Joanne Fenner of Dayton, Ohio; six grandchildren, Samuel, Thomas and Matthew Wingen, Alessandria Marienthal, Fenner and Tava Oosterbaan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. Persis Williams, rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center, and the Rev. David Kirpatrick, chaplain of the Masonic Home, Utica, will co-officiate.

Interment will follow in the family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday morning from 9 to 11 a.m.

Ivan Frear

SIDNEY — Ivan Frear, 81, of Sidney, passed away Friday, March 15, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 27, 1920, son of the late John and Minnie Chamberlain Frear in Walton, N.Y.

Ivan served his country in the United States Army during W.W.II. He married Dorothy Rogers on Dec. 31, 1943, in Endicott, N.Y.

Ivan was employed as a machinist for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney. He retired in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 9277 in Sidney for 22 years. He served as junior governor and prelate and was a awarded the Fellowship Award in 1997. Ivan was also a member of the Sidney American Legion,

Ivan is survived by his wife Dorothy Frear, of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law Roland Frear of Binghamton and Kenneth and Charlene Frear of Masonville; four daughters and three son-in-laws, Sharon Nichols of Unadilla, Nancy and Skip Morrow of Sidney, Dianne and John Crisell of  South Carolina, Donna and Bruce Linker of Vermont; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by a son, Gary Ivan Frear; three grandchildren, Ivan J. Frear and Denise and Dale Frear; five brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 18, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m. with the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 9277 and the Rev. Christopher Prezorski, pastor of the Afton Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call Monday morning. The family will be in attendance at 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Sarah E. Wood

ONEONTA — Sarah E. Wood, 92, of Oneonta, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 25, 1909, in West Laurens, N.Y., the daughter of John Thomas Wade and Delila May (Thorpe) Wade.

Sarah was a longtime resident of Oneonta and did housekeeping in many area homes. She was a former member of the West Laurens Community Church and the West Laurens Fire Department Auxiliary. She enjoyed solving word find puzzles and playing dominoes with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed making fudge for families around Christmas time and special occasions.

Sarah is survived by a son, Robert Louis Wood of Sidney, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Robert Polley of Oneonta; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by special friends Mary Shoemaker of Oneonta and Phyllis Koepke of Otego.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter; a brother John T. Wade; and two sisters, Estella and Matty Wade. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Mark Cairo, and daughter-in-law, Gwen Wood.

Funeral services will be hold 11 a.m. Monday, March 18, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Sunday, March 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Raymond Papini

ONEONTA — Raymond Papini, 92, of Oneonta, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1910, in Teaneck, N.J., the son of Peter and Marion (Cara) Papini.

On June 6, 1936, he married Phyllis Rotunda. She predeceased him in 1978.

Raymond Papini was a long time resident of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California. He worked as a machinist and as a commercial sewing machine mechanic for companies like Levi Strauss of San Francisco and Peck and Peck of New York City. He was a dairy farmer for many years and owned a muck farm and grew onions for commercial sale.

He is survived by a son, Ronald Papini of Fairfield, Conn.; daughters Judith Pavone of Shelton, Conn., and Nancy Giannini of Waterbury, Conn.; and grandchildren Marc, Brian and Jesica Papini, Gregory Pavone and Leah Henchcliffe.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley,

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mr. Papini's memory may be made to the A.O. Fox Hospital Cardiac Care Unit, Oneonta.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Lawrence Davenport

SCHUYLER LAKE — Lawrence Elden Davenport, age 65, of 7373 State Highway No. 28, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2002, in his home after a long illness.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1937, in Milton, N.J., son of Verna Kimble Davenport Fredericks and the late Paul Roger Davenport.

Larry was raised in Butler, N.J., and was a graduate of Butler High School.

In 1960 he entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1962.

A resident of Schuyler Lake since 1990, he came here from Milton, N.J.

He was employed locally at the Rosewood Adult Care Home in Richfield Springs.

He had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. He was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, where he played the organ at the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturdays.

He was a caring, hopeful person and will be missed by many.

Surviving are his mother, Verna Fredericks; one aunt, Elizabeth Antis, both of Sparta, N.J.; a cousin, Marie O'Brien; three stepcousins and their wives, Robert and Denna Fredericks, Calvin and Karen Fredericks and Wayne and Sharon Fredericks.

Funeral will be from his residence on State Highway No. 28 on Friday at 9:15 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial to follow in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Terrance Healey officiating.

The family will be present in his home to receive friends and relatives on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Davenport will be laid to rest in the Norman Cemetery, Milton, N.J., on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders; envelopes will be available at his home.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Walter H. Stein

De LANCEY — Walter H. Stein, 77, of DeLancey, a lifelong Delhi area resident, was stricken suddenly at his home and passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002.

The son of the late Ernest V. and Anna (Mason) Stein, he was born Sept. 21, 1924, in the town of Meredith, was a 1942 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi, where he was active in sports, and married Esther Cook on May 24, 1947, in New York City.

Walter was employed for 37 years at the former Delhi GLF (Agway), where he was mill foreman at the time of his retirement.

A Delhi resident most of his life, he was a member of the former United Methodist Church.

Walter served 20 years in the Delhi Fire Department and played trombone in the department band; also in local dance bands in earlier years and, later, in several musical productions at the State University of Technology at Delhi. He moved to DeLancey in 1999.

An ardent lover of the outdoors, Walter was an avid hunter and fisherman, but also derived much pleasure from his flower and vegetable gardens, always sharing his abundant produce with his friends.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Esther C. Stein; his children, Stephen and wife, Debbie, Stein and children, Jeff, Kyle and Josh of DeLancey; Bradford Stein and children, Madia and Brad Jr., of Santa Fe, N.M.; Catherine and her husband, Andy Hewitt, and children, Carrie and Jason of Lake Delaware; Kevin Stein and sons, Colin and Thomas, of Kinderhook; two brothers, Charles and Marie Stein of Delhi, and Ralph and Constance Stein of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15. The Rev. Bert More will officiate, and burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Nellie C. Williams

DELHI — Nellie C. Williams, 89, of Tanglewood Lake, a lifelong Delhi area resident, passed away Monday, March 11, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital.

The daughter of the late Clarence M. and Catherine Mae (Sheldon) Carpenter, she was born July 20, 1912, in South Gilboa, was a 1931 graduate of Delaware Academy, and married Alvin C. Williams on Feb. 15, 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. "Alvie" died Aug. 22, 1997.

During her earlier life, Nellie worked as a switchboard operator for seven years at Delhi Telephone Co., and later as a receptionist for the late Dr. Orin Flint. Subsequently, she was a cafeteria cashier for the College Association at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, until her retirement.

A supportive member of the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church and Missionary Society, Andes, until her health declined, Nellie loved children and had been active with the youth at the former Second Presbyterian Church and at Delaware Academy. She was also an avid sports fan.

Surviving are her son and his wife, John C. and Janice V. Williams of Medina; a grandson, Toby John Williams of Bethesda, Md.; her brother, Maurice and Jeannette Carpenter of Havertown, Pa; and nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral and committal services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Daniel McCollister will officiate, and burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

John P. Spargo

MAHOPAC — John P. (the Rev. Paul) Spargo, of Mahopac, died March 10, 2002, at Somers Manor. He was 84.

He was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Elmira, to Jessie and Wilhelmina Pock Spargo.

He married Ruth Hubbard on July 7, 1943, in Wells Bridge.

He graduated from Milford Central School, Milford, in 1935. He graduated from Philadelphia School of the Bible in 1942; he received a three-year bachelor certificate in theology from Nyack College in 1949.

He was a staff sergeant during World War II and Korea 79th Infantry Division No. 304 and served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

He was a clergyman in Vermont and New York from 1949 to 1956.

He worked as a clerk in First National Stores from 1956 to 1970. He was a U.S. Postal carrier for the Mahopac post office from 1970 to 1982, when he retired.

He was a member of Putnam County AARP, former pastor of Kent and Fishkill Baptist Church and a member of the Patterson Baptist Church where he was a former associate pastor.

His wife, Ruth; and four sisters, Mildred Monroe, East Springfield, Helen Spargo, Cooperstown, Nina Rose, Oneonta, and Leona Spargo, Sidney, survive him.

Visiting was held on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Adams-Cordovano Funeral Home, 15 Church St., (off Route 6) Carmel.

A funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Halstead Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Montrose Bible Conference, Montrose, Pa.
