John P. Clune

ONEONTA — John P. Clune, 44, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Monday, March 25, 2002, in Cobleskill.

He was born Dec. 21, 1957, in Oneonta, the son of Daniel and Mattie (Mauer) Clune.

He married Colleen M. Crandall on Aug. 17, 1985, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, John worked at New York Central Mutual in Edmeston as an insurance underwriter.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church.

He had many interests but especially enjoyed playing golf and watching NASCAR racing. He was also a soccer coach for the Jay Cee Soccer League.

John loved spending time with his family and many friends and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Clune, of Oneonta; his two daughters, Jaclyn and Julianne at home; his mother, Mattie Clune, of Oneonta; his sisters and brothers, Diane and William Leo of Florida, N.Y., Mike and Heidi Clune of Branchville, N.J., Marie and Jerry Pitarresi of New Hartford, Janet and Ron Baker of Perry, Daniel and Martha Clune of Norwell, Mass., Robert and Linda Clune of Bethany, W.Va., Paul and Susan Clune of Oneonta; his mother-in-law, Joan A. Crandall, of Oneonta; his sisters-in-law, Maureen and William Decker of Athol, Mass., Kathleen and Ted Bailey of Oneonta, Eileen Crandall of Phoenix, Ariz., Darleen and Randy Bussy of Indianapolis, Ind., Charleen and George Parslow of Portlandville; his brother-in-law, Michael and Kim Crandall of Lancaster, Pa.; his uncle, the Rev. Gerald Clune, of Oneonta; and many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his father, Daniel Clune; and his father-in-law, Gerald M. Crandall.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jaclyn and Julianne Clune College Fund, care of Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of John P. Clune.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen Gage

HOLMESVILLE — Helen Gage, 64, of Holmesville, longtime caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery at  White Store, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, March 26, 2002, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born and raised in the town of Butternuts, Helen attended school in the Mount Upton district, and then took up painting and paper hanging, which she did in many area homes.

She had been caretaker of the Evergreen Cemetery from 1959 through the present time. Helen was also the custodian of the South New Berlin School from 1975 until her retirement in 1997.

A woman who truly loved life, Helen was always an outgoing, rambunctious type of person. She really enjoyed cutting wood, which was her specialty; and loved to hunt, fish and go four-wheeling.

She was especially fond of picnics at any time of the year, and had enjoyed one during the warm spell in January of this year.

Helen was born Feb. 17, 1938, the daughter of Howard and Pearl (Webster) Townsend.

She was married to Gordon Gage, who passed away in 1991.

Helen is survived by her son, Brian A. Gage, of Syracuse; her longtime companion, Ike Jones, of Holmesville; her granddaughter, Brittany Ann Gage, of Cortland; two sisters, Anna Camp of Lathams Corners and Wanda Brown of Bainbridge; and her brother, Howard Townsend, of Guilford. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Besides her husband, Gordon, Helen was predeceased by her brother, George Townsend.

Funeral services for Helen will be held on Friday, March 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South New Berlin Fire Department, care of the treasurer, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

Violet May Downes

EL PASO,  Texas — Mrs. Violet May Downes, age 99, widow of the Rev. Paul Downes Sr., died March 24, 2002.

Mrs. Downes was born Nov. 27, 1902, in Camden, N.J. The second oldest of 14 children, she worked as an accountant and office manager until her marriage in 1936.

She was a graduate of Philadelphia College of the Bible and served as a missionary to Nicaragua with her husband from 1936 to 1941.

She lived in Vermont, New York and Ohio, where her husband served as pastor of several churches and where many dear friends remain.

She is survived by her son, Paul L. Downes Jr., of Scotia, N.Y.; her daughter, Violet M. Gilson and son-in-law, Byron Chesbro, of El Paso,  Texas; by eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Seddon and Grace Unrath; by her brother, Lawrence Humes; numerous nieces and nephews; and cousins of Delaware County, N.Y.

Visitation will be at her El Paso home from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002.

A memorial service will be at the Unitarian Community, 4425 Byron St., at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2002.

A short graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland,  Texas.

Contributions in her memory should be made to the Beulah and Lee Moor Children's Home.

Theresa Mae Rudnitski

GILBERTSVILLE — Theresa Mae Rudnitski, 92, formerly of Gilbertsville, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born on May 16, 1909, in Unadilla, the daughter of Fred and Lucy (Daniels) Musson.

She married Albert F. Rudnitski in Gilbertsville on March 16, 1928. He died March 19, 1988.

They operated the "Little Grocery" in Gilbertsville for more than 20 years and retired in 1969.

She was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville.

Theresa is survived by her two sons, Donald Rudnitski of New Paltz and Gerald Rudnitski of Chenango Forks; her sister, Louise Richards of Morris; her brother, Albert Musson of Gilbertsville; and several grand and great-children.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert, Richard and James Musson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service time.

Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery at a later date.

It was Theresa's request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Deborah J. Loeser

FARMINGTON — Deborah J. Loeser, 49, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Rochester General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 27, 1952, in Oneonta, the daughter of Betty and Louis Brienza, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her sons, Matthew Loeser and Daniel Loeser; sisters, Andrea Sawyer-Delamartar, Toni Brienza, Tammy Dean and Bonnie Bowen; brother, Tarry Brienza; aunts, Rose Pallace and Louise Puylara; dear friend, Gene Loeser; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta, on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at 1 p.m.

Gifts in her memory may be directed to Humane Society at Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Rd., Fairport, NY 14450.

Francis H. Young

WEST ONEONTA — Francis H. Young, 82, of West Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, March 26, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 28, 1919, in West Oneonta, the son of Burdette and Frances (Van Luvan) Young.

He married the former Anna Watson on March 11, 1948, in Afton, who survives him.

Francis was a lifelong area resident and had worked for Nielson Construction Co. of Oneonta before his retirement.

He was a sergeant in the United States Air Force during World War II. He served in the infantry from 1939-1945, in the 9th Air Force Division Company G. During his enlistment he received an American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, with two bronze stars, meritorious unit commendation emblem and a Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar.

Francis was a member of American Legion Post 259, Oneonta.

He enjoyed gardening and his flowers as well as fishing and camping. He was also an avid trapper and enjoyed playing his harmonica.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Young, of West Oneonta; six daughters, Sharon Young of Sidney Center, Deborah Young Sanchez of Florida, Cindy Young Davis of Wells Bridge, Karen Anderson of Otego, Linda Young of Wells Bridge and Laurel Hill of Otego; four sons, Laverne Young of Oneonta, Lawrence Young of Bainbridge, Darrell Young of Otego and Ronald Young of Laurens; one sister, Violet Wagner of Syracuse; and one brother, Roland Young of Arizona. He also is survived by several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Francis was predeceased by a brother, Grover Young; and a sister, Margaret Graham.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward L. Eastman of Oneonta officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Thursday evening, March 28, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be later in the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

James Robinson Jr.

SIDNEY — James W. Robinson Jr., 45, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born July 30, 1956, the son of James W. and Karene Burdick Robinson in Sidney.

Jim served his country in the United States Army for nine years.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 277 in Sidney and a chapter member of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter No. 85.

Jim is survived by his wife, Maureen Robinson, Sidney; his mother, Karene Robinson, Sidney; two sons, Jeffrey and Christopher Robinson, Kentucky; four stepchildren, Jessica Sullivan, Erica Marble, Joseph McPartlan and Mark Beilby Jr., Sidney; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Alan and Sharon Robinson,  Pennsylvania, Dennis and Donna Robinson,  Pennsylvania, Keith and Suzanne Robinson, Guilford, and Thomas and Maryann Robinson,  Pennsylvania; sister and brother-in-law, Valerie and Walter Henriksen, Mount Upton; good friends, James Butler and Duane Hunt; special racing buddy, Matthew; several friends; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, James W. Robinson Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 30, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m. Friends may call before the service; the family will be in attendance at noon.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter No. 85 or the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Dennis L. Callan

AFTON — Dennis L. Callan, 62, of Afton, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Dec. 24, 1939, the son of the late Robert L. and Lula Treadwell Callan in Maine, N.Y.

Dennis served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-1959.

He married Shirley Stanton on March 17, 1959, in Glen Castle.

Mr. Callan was employed as a counselor for Camp Brace, Division for Youth, in Masonville.

He was a member of the Afton Golf Club and bowled in Bainbridge for Blue Seal.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Shirley Callan, Afton; son, David Callan, Scranton, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Ronald Ingham, Bainbridge; sister, Roberta Darling, Port Crane; five grandchildren, Summer and Daniel Hromada, Ronald Ingham Jr., David Callan Jr., Stephanie Callan and Kristena Ingham; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Hromada and Eathan Ingham; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by brother, Gary Callan; and two sisters, Nancy Kenyon and Shirley Jones.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Afton Emergency Squad and the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Mary Winnie

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Mrs. Mary Neal Becker Winnie, 93, of Kings Grant Retirement Village in Martinsville, Va., and formerly of Cooperstown, died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2002, at Kings Grant Healthcare in Martinsville.

She was born on March 18, 1909, in Pleasant Brook, a daughter of John and Mary (Neal) Becker. She married Gordon S. Winnie on June 15, 1935, in Cooperstown. Mr. Winnie died on Jan. 30, 1996.

A graduate of Cooperstown High School, Mrs. Winnie also graduated from business school in Albany. She was employed at the Otsego County Clerk's Office in Cooperstown for many years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown and was active in its Women's Guild. She was also a member of Otsego-Hartwick Chapter No. 201, Order of the Eastern Star in Cooperstown and the Otsego Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Winnie is survived by two daughters, Sally Campbell of South Dennis, Mass., and Jean Gulbranson of South Dartmouth, Mass.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Doris Weaver of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Bernard Becker and his wife, Virginia, of Martinsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one granddaughter, Sarah Neal Gulbranson.

A graveside funeral and committal service will be held at a later date in Lakewood Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas M. Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Elizabeth R. Young

BURLINGTON FLATS — Mrs. Elizabeth R. Young, 88, of Burlington Flats, died Thursday evening, March 28, 2002, at Valley Health Services in Herkimer.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1914, in Windber, Pa., a daughter of Steve and Elizabeth (Boros) Richvalsky. She married John S. Young on Feb. 27, 1943, in Bound Brook, N.J. Mr. Young died on Aug. 1, 1994.

Raised and educated in Windber, Pa., Mrs. Young was employed by RCA in Sommerville, N.J., where she assembled components. She later assisted her husband in operating taverns he owned in Raritan and Bound Brook, N.J. In 1972 the Youngs moved to Angel Hill in Burlington Flats and for 10 years, Mr. Young owned and operated Young's Mill Tavern in Phoenix Mills.

Mrs. Young possessed a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed all aspects of gardening including planting trees and vegetable and flower gardens, as well as landscaping and building stonewalls. She also enjoyed interior decorating, refinishing furniture and antiques. Among her other hobbies were cooking and baking, especially Hungarian cookies, as well as crocheting, sewing and knitting.

Mrs. Young was of the Catholic faith and attended the Old Stone Church in Schuyler Lake.

She is survived by her four sons, the Rev. John Clark Young and his wife, Irene, Frederick Andrew Young and his wife, Jacqueline, and Stephen Bruce Young, all of Burlington Flats, and Richard Charles Young and his wife, Renee, of DeBary, Fla; 10 grandchildren, Holly Peretin, and Sara, Maggie, Josh, Richard, Stephen, Kelly, Joel, Keith, and Brett Young; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Pelesky; three brothers, Andrew Richvalsky of Sacramento,  Calif., Franklin Richvalsky of Westchester, and Charles Richvalsky of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Steven Richvalsky; a sister, Barbara Bukovich; a great-grandson, Raymond Peretin; a granddaughter, Petra Young; and a sister, Helen Gingrass.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Old Stone Church in Schuyler Lake, with the Rev. John C. Young, officiating. Burial will be in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday morning from 10 until 11, when Mrs. Young's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the Old Stone Church, P.O. Box 51B, Schuyler Lake, NY 13457.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
