Elena M. Llewelyn

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Elena M. Llewelyn, 88, of Cooperstown, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare.

She was born in New Rochelle on Jan. 16, 1914, a daughter of Giusseppe and Maria (Giuffra) Garbarino.

Elena graduated from high school in New Rochelle. She married W. Donald Llewelyn, who predeceased her on Dec. 29, 1998, on June 11, 1938, in New Rochelle. She was an administrative assistant for the Holy Rood Cemetery, Diocese of Rockville Centre in Westbury, L.I., for 27 years.

Donald and Elena lived in New Rochelle, the Bronx and Westbury, L.I., before moving to Cooperstown in 1981.

Elena was a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, a member of the Cooperstown Art Association, a volunteer at Bassett Healthcare and a member of the M.I. Bassett Auxiliary.

She enjoyed painting, crocheting, knitting and other crafts.

Elena is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dylis and Herb Burdt of Richfield Springs and Dorothy Lewis of Medford, L.I.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jaqueline and Mark Baxendell of Groton, N.Y., Valerie and Robert Durfee of Saranac Lake, Richard and Tammy Burdt of Saranac Lake and Richard and Pam Gerard of Littleton, Col.; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a sister, Rose Hennigar of Bethpage, N.Y.

She was predeceased by three brothers, August, Frank, and Emil Garbarino; a grandson, Michael Gerard, in 1973 and a son-in-law, Stan Lewis, in 2000.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. John Rosson, pastor officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

For those who prefer not to send flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown or to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Treatment Center, 1 Atwell R0ad, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Henry Christmann

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Henry Christmann, "O.F.," 82, of U.S. Highway 20, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at his residence.

He was born, on Oct. 14, 1919, in Patterson, N.J., son of the late Henry and Hattie Wuensch Christmann.

Henry was raised in Patterson and was a graduate of Patterson High School. During World War II he served with the United States Army, where he received the European African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Oct. 5, 1949, he married Rose Marie Russo in Brooklyn, a blessed union of 53 years until her passing in October of 2001.

Mr. Christmann worked as a linotype operator for the Patterson News, retiring in 1986. He and his wife moved to Richfield Springs in 1991.

Henry was a gentle man with a warm sense of humor. To all who new him, they will remember his smile and easy-going manner.

Surviving him are two sons, Christopher and his wife, JoAnn, Christmann of Richfield Springs, Mark Christmann of Edmeston; two brothers, Charles Christmann of Richfield Springs and Roy Christmann of Los Angeles,  Calif.; three grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Rose, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine Christmann, and a brother, Harold Christmann.

Funeral service and interment are private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Grace M. Millias

SIDNEY — Grace M. Millias, 92, of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Friday, March 29, 2002, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Sept. 10, 1909, in the Town of Richmondville, N.Y., the daughter of Almon and Mona (Rickard) Warner.

She was married to Joel S. Millias, Sept. 10, 1927, in Worcester, N.Y. Mr. Millias passed away Jan. 31, 1988.

Grace and her late husband owned and operated a poultry farm in the town of Butternuts for many years. She had been a resident of Sidney since 1968, and retired in 1972 as a district manager for Avon Products Inc., following 24 years of service.

She was very active in many church organizations throughout the years and attended the First Baptist Church in Sidney.

Grace is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Neva and Richard Furlong of New Hartford, N.Y., Ruby Stilwell of Palmyra, Pa., and Edna Cribbs of Clifton Park, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, N.Y., with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be later in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday, April 1, from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Evelyn J. Hammerle

SCHUYLER LAKE — Evelyn J. Hammerle, 85, of Schuyler Lake, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born April 5, 1916, in Salamanca, N.Y. the daughter of Edward and Judita (Ambuske) Kalamanka. She married John Arnold Hammerle Nov. 27, 1943. He predeceased her in 1974.

Evelyn was valedictorian of the Class of 1934, and retired as the controller from the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown.

Evelyn was a participant in life. After her retirement, she served as a volunteer at Bassett Hospital, was member of the Richfield Springs Lioness Club and the Quilt Club of Cooperstown. She enjoyed all types of gardening and had traveled extensively around the world including China, Europe, Hawaii, and several trips to Aruba.

Evelyn pampered her Saab, and loved her cats and dogs, especially Heidi. As her health began to fade she traveled closer to home in the companionship of her family, Edward and Lo.

Evelyn is survived by her children John Hammerle, Edward and his wife, Lo; her sister and brother-in-law, Bea and Chuck Megivern, and her sister Barbara Feichter; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 4, at 6 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Burns officiating.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Kathleen O'Hara

Kathleen O'Hara, 57, died unexpectedly Monday, March 25, 2002, at her home in Norwich, N.Y.

Born March 20, 1945, Miss O'Hara was a graduate of St. Paul's School and Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart in Albany. She received a bachelor of arts degree in history from Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y. in 1967.

Following college, Miss O'Hara taught at the Sacred Heart School in Miami, Fla. Upon her return to Norwich, she was a reporter for The Evening Sun. Her talent and wit were reflected in her writing as she reported on local government and community affairs.

Miss O'Hara is survived by her mother, Elizabeth C. Locke; her stepfather, Dr. James C. Locke; two brothers, F. Ted O'Hara of Schenectady, N.Y., and Robert O'Hara of New Orleans, La.; two stepbrothers, William Locke of New Hartford, N.Y., and Peter Locke of Fishkill, N.Y.; three nephews; three great-nieces; and one great- nephew.

She was pre-deceased by her father, Edward H. O'Hara, the former president of Norwich Mills Inc. Champion Products.

Calling hours will be at Devine-Wilson Memorial Home on Monday, April 1, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy's memory can be made to the Doan Stuart School (formerly the Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart), 799 South Pearl St., Albany, NY.

Ronald E. Lindsley

OTEGO — Ronald Edward Lindsley, 57, of Otego, died suddenly Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital emergency room, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 4, 1945, in Oneonta, the son of Gerald and Alice (Powers) Lindsley.

He married the former Charlotte Anne Card on Aug. 10, 1968. She survives him.

Mr. Lindsley was the chief technician at Time Warner Cable in Oneonta, having been associated with the cable industry for 35 years until his recent retirement. He cared for his technicians at Time Warner Cable.

He had lived in Otego since 1968, when he moved from Oneonta.

His family always came first. He had many friends he enjoyed being with, including Tom Osborne with whom he built cars and hot rods. His golfing buddies, the Elks Club, VFW, Moose Lodge, Oneonta Country Club and Oneonta Sportsman Club, where he was a life member, were all a part in his life.

He enjoyed motorcycling with Skeeter and Tommy Todd, as well as his daughter, Angella.

Ron was a veteran of the Vietnam War and obtained the rank of sergeant in the Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Anne Lindsley, of Otego; two daughters, Angella Lindsley of Otego and Kimberley Lindsley Buccheri of Laurens; one sister, Norma Jean Thomas of Oneonta; one brother, Ken Lindsley of Newington, Conn.; several nieces and nephews, including Bob Thomas of Oneonta; and a first cousin, Jerry French of Maryland.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Norman Lindsley.

At Ron's request there will be no funeral service.

It has been requested that those who wish may send donations to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 in memory of Ronald Edward Lindsley.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

Virginia Lattocco

ONEONTA — Virginia E. Lattocco, 75, of Oneonta, died Friday evening, March 29, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 10, 1926, in Troy, the daughter of Thomas and Rose (LeMay) Evers.

She married Dominick J. Lattocco on July 11, 1948, in St. Paul's Catholic Church, Troy.

Virginia moved to the area in 1944. She worked as a special education teacher for BOCES, serving in the Oneonta Senior High School for 20 years. She retired in 1982.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

She was a member and an officer of the Oneonta Federated Garden Club. She was also a member of the Oneonta Family Services.

She loved playing bridge, gardening, reading and doing the daily crossword puzzle in the New York Times. Virginia especially enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and many friends.

She is survived by her husband, Dominick Lattocco, of Oneonta; her son, Steven Lattocco of Milwaukee, Wis.; her two daughters and their spouses, Susan and Michael Bracci of Rochester and Sally and Lawrence Shaffer of Vernon, Conn. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Evers of Allentown, Pa.; her grandchildren, An-Marye Finch, Jeremy, Jacey, Jeanna and Joshua Bracci and Erik Shaffer. Her great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jaiden and Christopher; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Thomas, James, Robert and Jack Evers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. toady at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Phillip K. Nelson

MIDDLEBURGH — Phillip Keith Nelson, 91, of Middleburgh, died Friday evening, March 29, 2002, in Middleburgh.

He was born Aug. 13, 1910, in Breakabeen, the son of Harry James and Irene (Baldwin) Nelson.

He married the former Ruth Beams on May 19, 1934. She died Sept. 10, 1989.

Mr. Nelson was a dairy farmer on his own farm in Breakabeen for 40 years. He lived in Schoharie County all his life.

He served as superintendent of highways in the town of Fulton for 12 years and had been very active in the Republican Party in Schoharie County. At one time he served as a deputy sheriff and deputy game warden.

A 1928 graduate of Middleburgh High School, Mr. Nelson was a semi-professional baseball player in the 1930s with the Sodbusters out of the Albany-based Suburban League.

His family was one of the first settlers of Schoharie County in 1759.

He was a member of the Eastern Milk Producers and National Rifle Association.

He is survived by a niece, Elna George of Oneonta; a cousin, Anne Henning O'Donnell; and several special friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, from the Breakabeen Presbyterian Church in Breakabeen, with the Rev. Robert Kendall, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Palmer and Shaylor Funeral Home, River Street in Middleburgh, from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Burial will be held at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 MacArthur Ave., Cobleskill, NY 12043 in memory of Phillip Keith Nelson.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Alice Yager

ONEONTA — Alice Yager, 84, of Oneonta, died Saturday morning, March 30, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born May 25, 1917, in Oneonta, the daughter of James Edward and Gracelia (Harley) Kane.

She married J. Kenneth Yager on Dec. 25, 1945, in Oneonta. He died Dec. 14, 1986.

Alice was a homemaker in her own home. She was a lifelong area resident of Oneonta and a 1934 graduate of Oneonta High School.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and had worked in the sanctuary guild of the church.

She was a volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 40 years.

She is survived by a son, David D. Yager of College Park, Md.; and a daughter, Cinda C. Yager of Minneapolis, Minn. A nephew, James E. Kane Sr.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Paul Kane, who had lived in Oneonta.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Spencer vanGulick, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Oneonta.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Alice Yager.
