George Scofield Jr.

WALTON — George W. Scofield Jr., died suddenly on Friday, March 29, 2002. He was 64.

Mr. Scofield worked as a maintenance technician for Kraft Foods in Walton for more than 35 years before retiring in January of 1997. He was a member of UFCW Local 1 in Utica.

Mr. Scofield was born Sept. 14, 1937, in Walton, to George and Eleanor McCullagh Scofield.

He married Priscilla (Chick) Furgason in Cannonsville.

Mr. Scofield will be remembered as a craftsman and all-around fix-it man.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed his three grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla; his children, Dianne (George) Sonner of Walton and George (Roberta) Scofield III, also of Walton; his loving grandchildren, Stephanie and Kyle Sonner and Kelly Scofield; his sisters, Betty Waters of Oneonta, Barbara (Bert) Mullineaux of Walton, Linda Banks of Oneonta and Carol (Kevin) DeSilva of Oneonta; his brothers, Richard (Gerline) Sr. of Walton, Gerald of Otego and Gary (Rae Lynn) of Oneonta. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Carol Knapp of Delhi, Linda Sharpes of Mississippi and Jean (Jim) Scofield of Walton; brothers-in-law, Clarence (Linda) Furgason of Bainbridge and Eric Furgason of Walton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bruce.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Russell S. Whitbeck

FRANKLIN — Russell S. Whitbeck, 81, most recently of Norwich, and formerly of Franklin, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Valleyview Nursing Home in Norwich.

He was born in Franklin on Jan. 8, 1921, the son of Orlo and Lottie (Davie) Whitbeck.

Russell retired from the Amphenol Corp. in 1982, where he was employed for 30 years. He also operated a dairy farm on the Merrickville Road in the town of Franklin for 14 years.

After moving from Franklin, he lived in Cooperstown and most recently Norwich.

He is survived by three sons, Russell Whitbeck of Perry, Fla., Charles Whitbeck of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Gene Whitbeck of Franklin; a brother, Charles Whitbeck of Franklin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special niece, Donna Whitbeck; two dear friends, Madeline Cerar of Norwich and Bill Cerar of Greene.

He was predeceased by his wives, Thelma, Betty and Laura; along with a son, Daniel Roger Whitbeck.

A private funeral service, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating, will be held at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, followed by burial in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Daniel Schrom

COOPERSTOWN — Daniel Schrom, 82, of Cooperstown, died late Saturday evening, March 30, 2002, at The Meadows.

He was born on Dec. 9, 1919, in Fultonham, a son of Frank and Margaret (Wilber) Schrom.

He married Elizabeth Decker on July 11, 1959, in Worcester.

Raised and educated in Fultonham, Mr. Schrom was first employed on a farm in the Fultonham area. He then worked at the cement plant in Howes Cave before returning to farming. Most recently he was employed by the Delaware Otsego Corp. in Cooperstown doing many jobs, including laying railroad tracks. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Schrom is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth Schrom, of Cooperstown; his mother-in-law, Esther Silsby, of Duanesburg; two sisters, Carrie and Esther; several nieces, nephews and a close friend, Tamulia Finch, of Cooperstown.

A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Don Yarborough, pastor of the Community Gospel Church in Oneonta, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Paul L. Rorick

ONEONTA — Paul L. Rorick, 80 years, of Oneonta, went to be with our Lord on Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Susquehanna, Pa., the son of Arthur J. and Ruth Mary (King) Rorick.

Paul graduated from St. Mary's School in 1936, from Oneonta Junior High in 1937 and from graduated from Oneonta High School in 1941.

Paul drove trucks for Pepsi and also worked at Monser Bros.

On July 22, 1942, Paul enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served during World War II with the Regimental Weapons Co., 23rd Regiment, Fourth Marine Division. Those campaigns consisted of action against the enemy at Roi-Namur, Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He received the Presidential Unit Citation and ribbons for area M's were the Asia-Pacific Area with three Stars. Paul was also a member of the Survivors Club, Fourth Marine Division. On July 22, 1946, Paul was honorably discharged as a corporal.

He married Mary Rose Esposito on June 26, 1948, in North Haven, Conn.

Paul graduated from a vocational school for plumbing and pipe fitting in 1948. In November 1949, became a member of UA Local 691 in Norwich. He also worked for his father at A.J. Rorick & Sons Plumbing and Heating until the death of his father.

He then continued working for construction companies through Local 691. On July 1, 1977, Local 691 merged with Local 112 in  Johnson City. Paul retired with more than 30 years of service.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He helped out in various ways that included Knights of the Altar, usher, counting collections and involvement with cemetery maintenance. He was a past life-member at the Elks Club No. 1312 of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Oneonta; his children, Michael and his wife, Arlene, of Chittenango, Kathleen and her husband, Donald Couture, of Jacksonville, Fla., Arthur and his wife, Sandra, of Oneonta, and John and his wife, LouAnn, of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Anthony and his wife, Leanne, of Fairport, Jeanette and her husband, Lee Popwell, of Mayport, Fla., Yvonne Couture of Jacksonville, Fla., Dan and Katherine Rorick of Oneonta, Jacalyn Rorick of Bainbridge, and Brian and Kelly Dumond of Bainbridge; his great-grandson, Chase Anthony Rorick of Fairport; his brothers and sister, Joseph and his wife, Dorothy, of Vero Beach, Fla., Donald and Marian of Vestal, and Mary  Taylor of Seal Beach,  Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul A. Roman officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Resident Memorial Fund, care of Delaware County Countryside Care Center, R.D. No. 1 Box 417, Delhi, NY 13753, in loving memory of Paul L. Rorick.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary Kukenberger

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mary Katherine Kukenberger, 80, of Cooperstown, died Easter Sunday morning, March 31, 2002, at her home.

She was born on July 25, 1921, on Christian Hill, the eighth child of August J. and Antoinette (Ocakar) Konchar.

She married Frank J. Kukenberger on July 20, 1940, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Raised on Christian Hill, Mary attended a one-room schoolhouse there and later attended Milford Central School.

A farmer her whole life, Mary was a vital part of her and her husband's farm on Beaver Meadow Road, as well as their farm in Fork Shop.

She had a great love for the animals and worked in many capacities on the farm.

Mary was a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown and the Slovenian Club in Little Falls.

She enjoyed flower gardening, dancing and bowling and especially enjoyed golfing at the driving range her husband built for her on their farm.

Mary will be remembered as a wonderful housewife, especially for her cooking and baking. The family matriarch, she will be greatly missed by her loving husband, children, grandchildren and siblings.

Mary is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frank, of Cooperstown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank A. Jr. and Ruth Kukenberger of Cooperstown, Edward L. and Eileen Kukenberger of Fly Creek and Robert J. and Claudia Kukenberger of Cazenovia; one daughter, Cynthia M. Kukenberger  White, and her companion, Robert S. Kolka of Haymarket, Va.; six grandchildren, Amy Kukenberger, Thomas Kukenberger and his wife, Amy, Michael Kukenberger, Christine Kukenberger, Matthew  White and Bradley Kukenberger; two stepgrandchildren, Katie Folts and her husband, John, and Brian Boyle and his wife, Allison; one sister, Mrs. Frances Linich of Cooperstown; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, William H. and Eileen Konchar and Joseph R. and Dorothy Konchar, all of Milford, Edward J. and Dorothy Konchar and Anthony J. Konchar, all of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Mrs. Anna Mole in 1985, Mrs. Pauline Kralj in 1989 and Mrs. Antonia Giel in 1995; four brothers, Frank J. Konchar in 1978, Albin J. (Beanie) Konchar in 1992, August J. (Gus) Konchar in 1997 and Stanley L. Konchar in 1998; and her grandson, Christopher Todd  White, in 2001.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Mary's family will be in attendance from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John Hundt

WESTFORD — John Hundt, 96, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born Aug. 7, 1905, in Queens, the son of Frank J. and Emma (Herthe) Hundt.

He married Louisa Goshell on June 14, 1930. She predeceased him on July 29, 1985.

Mr. Hundt was formerly from Long Island, where he was a self-employed carpenter and roofer.

In 1955, he moved to Westford and worked for various local carpenters including Larry Habinc. One of his last construction jobs was building the concrete forms on Interstate 88.

He is survived by his daughters, Frances J. Loftus, Betty Crandall of Unadilla and Mary Lou "Honey" and husband, Bill Platt, of Westford; grandchildren, Bill Peeters and his companion, Jane Tybor, of South New Berlin, Tom and Connie Peeters of West Winfield, Phillip and Cheryl Peeters of Worcester, Linda and Paul Benjamin of Burlington Flats, Jim Loftus of  Texas and John Loftus of Delhi; great-grandchildren, Jolene, Billy and Dereck Peeters, Gina Talbot, Christopher, Ryon and Jessica Peeters, Paul M. and Mitchell Benjamin; great-great-grandchildren, Kyle Peeters and Zack and Katlin Talbot; two brothers, George Hundt of  South Carolina and Gus Hundt of Long Island; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Red and Billy Hundt; and a sister, Liz Jazalo.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Burial will follow at the Westford Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Hundt to The Meadows Activity Fund, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Robert E. Osborn

ONEONTA — Robert E. Osborn, 72 years, of Oneonta, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born March 20, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of Milton and Marion (Mallery) Osborn.

He married Shirley Nichols on March 10, 1955, at the United Methodist Church, Morris. Mrs. Osborn predeceased him on May 16, 1998.

A lifelong area resident, Bob worked as a machine operator at Bendix-Scintilla in Sidney. He had also driven a taxicab.

Bob was a member of the Mountain View Social Club of Oneonta, and enjoyed fishing and watching movies.

He is survived by his mother, Marion Sprague, of The Meadows; his two daughters, Frances J. Osborn of Oneonta and Clara and Charles Sutliff Jr. of Unadilla; his six grandsons, Josh and Cody Osborn of Oneonta, Charles Sutliff III and his fiance, Crystal Clapper, of Otego, Roger D. and Patricia Sutliff of Tupper Lake, Jeremiah Sutliff at the State University College at Brockport, and Patrick Sutliff; six great-grandchildren, Kyle Howe, Nicole and Katie Sutliff of Otego, and Ashley, Tanner, and Mackenzie Sutliff of Tupper Lake; his sister, Wanda Predmore, of South Otselic; and her children, Bill Cane of Oneonta and Barb and Ronnie Youngs; and grand nieces and nephew, Victoria and Ronnie Quimet of Oneonta, Laura Hollenbeck of Oneonta and Robert Lee Hollenbeck Jr. of Maple Grove.

Bob was predeceased by a niece, Shirley Hollenbeck.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Robert E. Osborn.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John James Turner

WORCESTER — John James Turner Jr., 83, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1918, in West Hoboken, N.J., the son of John James and Anna (Greuter) Turner.

He married Dorothy Ann Meinecke on Nov. 19, 1939, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Huntington Station. She predeceased him on Feb. 28, 2002.

Mr. Turner was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, on the USS Whitney during the Asiatic-Pacific theater.

Mr. Turner is formerly of Huntington Station.

He was the quality control manager for Telephonics Inc. in Huntington and was retired from Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage.

He was a member of the Huntington Manor Lyons Club and served as president from 1954 to 1955, and was also a member of the Grumman's Retiree Club.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and best friend. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by two sons, John H. Sr. and wife, Jackie, Turner of Worcester and James and wife, Jule, Turner of Allamuchy, N.J.; grandchildren, John Jr., Michael and wife, Sherri, Shannon, James, Jason and Tara; great-grandchildren, Michael (Moey) and Alyssa (Ali); two sisters, Loretta Hoffman and Anna Jorge, both of New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Calling hours will be held at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, from 1 p.m. to the funeral service time at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Mr. Turner will be cremated after the funeral service and the committal service with full military honors will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Turner to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, NY 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Gladys O. Patrick

FRANKLIN — Gladys O. Patrick, 85, of Franklin, went to be with her Lord, after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, March 31, 2002, at her residence.

She was born in Franklin on Dec. 25, 1916, the daughter of Albert G. and Mable (Andrews) Osterhout.

She married Robert Patrick on June 13, 1936. He died on Nov. 25, 1993, after 57 years of marriage.

During World War II, she worked in Scintilla, and later worked at the Oneonta Dress Factory on Chestnut Street in Oneonta. She retired in 1977 from Allied Corp. in Sidney after 22 years.

Gladys helped start the Fireman's Auxiliary in Franklin, along with being a member of the Aldrich Baptist Church, the Aldrich Baptist Guild and the North Franklin Women's Club.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jack Law of Franklin; three grandchildren, John and Ellen Law of Ballston Lake, James Law of Ballston Spa and Colleen Law of Potsdam; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Colleen and John Latham Law of Ballston Lake; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Phyllis Osterhout of Summerdale, Ala.; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest; and a sister, Alice.

Gladys was respected and loved by everyone she came in contact with.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Aldrich Baptist Church, North Franklin, with the Rev. Richard Sliter, pastor, and her nephew, the Rev. John Osterhout, officiating.

Friends may call on Friday evening, April 5, 2002, at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the Aldrich Baptist Church, 12679 State Highway 357, Franklin, NY 13775.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
