Ethel Allene Morrow

AFTON — Ethel Allene Morrow of Afton, died on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 7:38 p.m. at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born on March 2, 1924, in Bainbridge, the daughter of Clifford and Ruthanne (Graney) Mead.

She was married to James Morrow on July 29, 1945, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bainbridge.

She worked as an inspector at Bendix Corp. in Sidney, for 37 years, retiring from Bendix in 1984.

She was a den mother for many years in Pack No. 51 in Afton.

She had been active in the Bainbridge-Guilford Alumni Association, first as a secretary and then as president for many years as well as the editor of the Alumni Newspaper.

She was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Afton, and a member of the Afton VFW Auxiliary and served as president for eight years. She was also a graduate of the Bainbridge Central High School in 1942.

She is survived by her husband, James Morrow, of Afton; and three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Morrow and his fiance, Becky DelCanto, of Endicott, Richard and Kay Morrow of Afton and David (Skip) and Nancy Morrow of Sidney; her former daughter-in-law, Kathy Morrow of Afton; three grandchildren, Anne Marie Tavi of Vantaa, Finland, Jeremy Morrow and Kim Morrow of Afton; and stepgranddaughter, Dorothy Burke, of Sidney.

Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Katya and Daniella Tavi of Vantaa, Finland.

She was predeceased by four brothers and a sister; and her grandson, Robbie Morrow.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 121 Main St., Afton. The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, officiating.

Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Waneta C. Patton

ONEONTA — Waneta C. Patton, 85, of Goodyear Lake, Oneonta, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002, after a brief illness at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Wayne County, Pa., the daughter of Marion and Bessie (Bryant) Decker.

She married Donald F. Patton in Oneonta on June 10, 1935. Mr. Patton died Oct. 3, 1985.

Mrs. Patton was employed as a dietary supervisor at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 20 years, before her retirement in 1980, and was formerly employed along with her husband at the Homestead Restaurant in Colliersville and also the Montgomery Wards Catalog Outlet.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Rae Webster of Dover, Del., and Kitty Rae Louchs of Cliffside; two sons, Donald F. Patton Jr. of Milford and Loren and his wife, Nancy, Patton of Otego; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Maryland Cemetery in Maryland.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Fox Hospital Building Fund, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Jeannette Hunt

DELHI — Jeannette Hunt, 97, of Delhi, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Feb. 25, 1905, in Walton, the daughter of Alvin and Anna (Benedict) Patterson.

She married Arthur L. Hunt on Jan. 2, 1924, in Mundale. He predeceased her Oct. 31, 1985.

Mrs. Hunt was a 77-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, and belonged to the Esther Circle of the church.

She was an avid quilter and was inducted into the Catskill Mountain Quilter's Hall of Fame for the heirlooms she created. She also enjoyed crocheting and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alma (Peter) Rasmussen, Delhi; two sons, Harold (Donna) Hunt, Petersburg, Va., and Ralph (Vera) Hunt, Delhi; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Gertrude Hewitt Mondore, predeceased her.

Services will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore, officiating.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 2, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will be at a later date at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Linnea J. Neu

HAMDEN — Linnea J. Neu, 48, of Hamden, was welcomed into the arms of our Lord, on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Jennifer L. Bilinski of Monroeville, N.J., and Nickolas J. Neu of Walton; a grandson, Elijah; two sisters, Susan G. Clark of Stony Point, and Nancy R. Clark of Chowchilla,  Calif.; nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Fred, Donna, Jimmy, Jessie, Corey, Hayley, Janet and Jamie.

Linnea was born July 3, 1953, in Nyack, the daughter of the late Stanley N. and Joan L. (Polhemus) Clark, and married Ron Neu in 1978.

A 24-year area resident, Linnea was a self-employed home-health-care provider, loved her children and family, and had a deep, personal relationship with the Lord.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. The Rev. Randall Eliason will officiate, and the family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Loretta Anderson

SIDNEY CENTER — Mrs. Loretta D. Anderson of 2050 Roof Road, Sidney Center, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Mrs. Anderson was born on March 29, 1926, in Yonkers, the daughter of John and Loretta (Wellenbrink) Nugent.

Her childhood was spent in Yonkers and College Point, where she met and married James P. Anderson. He predeceased her in 1971.

Most of her life was spent in the Sidney Center area. She worked as a home health aide.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney Center.

Survivors include her daughters, June Daly of Freemansburg, Pa., and Loretta Cable of Sidney Center; her son, James P. Anderson of Mount Upton; her grandchildren, Jameson Daly, Cassandra and Bryant Cable and Annette and Ashley Anderson; her sisters and their husbands, Carol and Richard Beard of College Point and Therese and James Sheridan of College Point; many nieces and nephews; many grand nieces and grand nephews; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Highland Cemetery in Sidney Center.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions in Mrs. Anderson's memory may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad or the Sidney Center United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. of Unadilla.

Albert G. Hall

STAMFORD — Albert G. Hall, 84, of Stamford, died Monday morning, April 1, 2002, at home.

Born in Troy, he was the son of Albert E. Hall and Jessie Clum Hall.

He was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School and Cornell University.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with distinction in the European Theatre of operations as sergeant-chief of the 155 mm Howitzer Gun Section.

Mr. Hall worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for 35 years, becoming director of Fish and Wildlife in 1968. He retired in 1973 and became the executive director of the Catskill Study Commission.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Beebe Hall; two sons, James A. Hall and his wife, Carol, of Tannersville, Pa., and Donald A. Hall and his wife, Sharon, of Camillus; a daughter, Joanne Hall of Albany; six grandchildren, Timothy Hall, Kristina Hall Leshnower and Kathryn, Brian, Troy and Matthew Hall; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, John D. Hall; and a son, William B. Hall.

Friends may call Thursday, April 4, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, at 40 Main St. in Stamford.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 5, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford. Interment will follow in the Stamford Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 or the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home of Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Clinton Van Zandt Hawn

COOPERSTOWN — Dr. Clinton Van Zandt Hawn, 86, of Cooperstown, died March 30, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born in Albany on Nov. 27, 1915, the son of Clinton Benjamin and Ethyl Jean (Van Zandt) Hawn.

He was educated at the Albany Academy, Williams College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Medical School, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He was elected a member of the Society of Fellows of Harvard University, 1944-47.

Dr. Hawn was appointed pathologist in chief at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in 1947. In 1950-51, he was associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and pathologist in chief at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.

He returned to the Bassett Hospital as pathologist in chief in 1951 and retired in 1980. He was clinical professor of pathology emeritus at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Helms Hawn; four children, Cynthia Hawn Coleman of Potsdam, Van Zandt Hawn of Wayzata, Minn., Gates Helms Hawn of Far Hills, N.J., and Richard Pearsall Hawn of Sherborn, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

For many years he was president of the board of trustees of the Village Library in Cooperstown.

He was a member of the Mohican Club, the Clark Sports Center and the Cooperstown Country Club.

There will be no calling hours or funeral.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Bassett at 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Ernest Hoyt

BINGHAMTON — Ernest Hoyt, 99, formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Good Shepherd Fairview Home in Binghamton.

He was born Feb. 13, 1903, the son of the late Frank D. and Jennifer M. Terry Hoyt in Cherry Valley.

Ernest married Irene Robbins on Aug. 18, 1926, in Bainbridge. She predeceased him on April 30, 1999.

He was employed for 52 years for Borden's Chemical Co., in Bainbridge. He started sweeping the floors and retired as the purchasing agent.

In his younger days, Ernest played baseball in the Bainbridge Baseball League, and was a three time tennis champion.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bainbridge, serving 13 years as treasurer, several years as trustee and teaching Sunday school.

At the Good Shepherd Home he volunteered to greet new arrivals and at the front desk. Ernest scheduled the devotions and prayers in the dining room.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Charles  White of South Portland, Maine; grandson, Anthony Salerno Jr.; granddaughter, Cheryl Isom; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Sundar Samuels officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

John Hundt

WESTFORD — John Hundt, 96, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born Aug. 7, 1905, in Queens, the son of Frank J. and Emma (Herthe) Hundt.

He married Louisa Goshell on June 14, 1930. She predeceased him on July 29, 1985.

Mr. Hundt was formerly from Long Island, where he was a self-employed carpenter and roofer.

In 1955, he moved to Westford and worked for various local carpenters including Larry Habinc. One of his last construction jobs was building the concrete forms on Interstate 88.

He is survived by his daughters, Frances J. Loftus, Betty Crandall of Unadilla and Mary Lou "Honey" and husband, Bill Platt, of Westford; grandchildren, Bill Peeters and his companion, Jane Tybor, of South New Berlin, Tom and Connie Peeters of West Winfield, Phillip and Cheryl Peeters of Worcester, Linda and Paul Benjamin of Burlington Flats, Jim Loftus of  Texas and John Loftus of Delhi; great-grandchildren, Jolene, Billy and Dereck Peeters, Gina Talbot, Christopher, Ryan and Jessica Peeters, Paul M. and Mitchell Benjamin; great-great-grandchildren, Kyle Peeters and Zack and Katlin Talbot; two brothers, George Hundt of  South Carolina and Gus Hundt of Long Island; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Fred and Billy Hundt; and a sister, Liz Jazalo.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Burial will follow at the Westford Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Hundt to The Meadows Activity Fund, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Ruth Keesler

SIDNEY — Ruth Keesler, 80, of Sidney, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born July 6, 1921, the daughter of the late Herbert and Leta Holbrook Anthony in New Berlin.

Ruth married Gleason Keesler on Nov. 25, 1950, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney. He predeceased her on March 15, 1988.

She was employed as a cashier for GTE in Sidney and Norwich for 38 years.

Ruth was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is survived by daughter, Linda Mondore of Sidney; grandson and his wife, David L. and Audra Mondore of Sidney; great-grandson, Dylan Mondore of Sidney; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Herbert and Emma Anthony of Riverview, Fla., and Virgil Anthony of Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by brother, Maurice Anthony; and sister, Leta Chase.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2002, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Shank officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.
