Irene K. Bresee

BURLINGTON FLATS — Mrs. Irene K. Bresee, 80, of Burlington Flats, died Friday evening, April 5, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1921, in Dorloo, a daughter of Joseph and LuLu (Brown) Kniskern.

She married Victor S. Bresee on Sept. 25, 1946. Mr. Bresee died on May 18, 1990.

Raised in the Dorloo area, Irene attended Cobleskill High School.

Following her marriage, she and her husband operated their own dairy farm in Burlington Flats, retiring in 1982.

For the past two years she had been a resident of the Welcome Home for Adults in Richfield Springs.

She was of the Protestant faith, and enjoyed farming and gardening.

Irene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis V. and Lois Bresee of Burlington Flats; one sister, Rachel Raedmakers of Rotterdam; three brothers, Ralph Kniskern and his wife, Elaine, of Schenevus, Douglas Kniskern of Dorloo and Lucien Kniskern and his wife, Betty, of  Jefferson; one brother-in-law, Richard Empie of Sharon Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and several siblings, she was predeceased by one son, Barry L. Bresee, on Feb. 13, 1965.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening, April 8, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Irene's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Old Stone Church, Box 61 B, Schuyler Lake, NY 13457.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Milton S. Hubbard

JEFFERSON — Milton S. Hubbard, 84, of  Jefferson, passed away on March 26, 2002, in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1917, in  Jefferson, the son of Marvin and Mabel (Smith) Hubbard.

He graduated from  Jefferson Central School in 1934 and from Hartwick College, Oneonta, in 1939, with a bachelor of science degree in business administration; served in the United States Army from 1941-1945; was employed by the General Electric Co., Schenectady, until he was appointed postmaster in  Jefferson, retiring in 1977.

He married Dorothy VanDusen on March 28, 1945.

His many years of community service include: Worshipful Master of Working Lodge No. 554, F&AM, and life member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Schenectady; president of the  Jefferson Central School Board of Education; commissioner of the  Jefferson Fire Department; adjutant of American Legion Post No. 1307 until 1993, when he transferred to the Ralph Sperbeck Post No. 249, Richmondville; trustee, member of the Administrative Board and church organist for the  Jefferson United Methodist Church; and member of the JCS Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Cheryl Hubbard, Alexandria, Va., and Van and Cynthia Hubbard, Holland Patent; three grandchildren, Vanessa, Katie and Darren; and a brother, Clinton Hubbard,  Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery will follow the service.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be given to the  Jefferson Central School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 245,  Jefferson, NY 12093-0245 or the  Jefferson United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 88,  Jefferson, NY 12093-0088.

Janet D. Darling

GILBERT, S.C. — Janet M. (Decker) Darling, 47, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., and most recently of Gilbert, S.C., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Newberry County Hospital in Columbia, S.C.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1954, in Oneonta, the daughter of William H. and Margaret M. (Wilcox) Decker.

She married Timothy Darling on April 16, 1977, in Oneonta.

Janet was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Albany Medical School of Nursing.

While living in Gilbert, S.C., she held several positions as a registered nurse. Before that, while living in Oneonta, she worked in the intensive care unit of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Janet was always held in high regard for her heart-giving ways in helping people.

She is survived by her husband, Timothy Darling, of Gilbert, S.C.; her mother, Margaret Wilcox Decker of Oneonta; three brothers, Thomas Decker of Fitzwilliam, N.H., William Decker of Athol, Mass., and Robert Decker of Mission Viego,  Calif.; three sisters, Carol Forman-Pemberton of Burnt Hills, Kathleen Byrum of Syracuse, N.Y., and Marianne Carter of Lake Oswego, Ore.; along with 16 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father, William H. Decker, in 1999.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, April 11, 2002, at 10 a.m., in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Anthony Chiaramonte officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Carolyn J. Mosley

COOPERSTOWN — Carolyn J. Mosley, age 61, of Susquehanna Street, passed away on Thursday evening, April 4, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare.

She was born on March 23, 1941, in Lewiston, daughter of the late William and Maybelle Printup Green.

Carolyn was raised in Richfield Springs and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, Class of 1959.

For several years she worked for the CVS Pharmacy in Cooperstown.

Her leisure time was spent enjoying music and reading.

At one time she wrote book critiques for the Cooperstown newspaper.

She will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person.

Surviving are one son, Calvin Mosley; a daughter, Deborah Skinner, both of Rochester; one brother, William Green Jr. of Syracuse; a sister, Jone and her husband, Clyde Robinson of Richfield Springs; three grandchildren, Lakesha, Christopher and Jeremy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Beside her parents, a sister, Barbara Green, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. James Barnes II, pastor of the Jordanville Federated Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Roberta J. Chase

COBLESKILL — Roberta "Robin" J. Chase, 48, of Quarry Street, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

Mrs. Chase was born March 20, 1954, in Stamford.

She was most recently employed at Wal-Mart in Cobleskill as a stock clerk.

At one time, she was a member of the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Chase of Albany and Jessica Graceson of Troy; a son, Daniel Chase Jr. of Kansas City, Kan.; her fiancee, Kenneth English of Cobleskill; two sisters and grandchildren, Shane Graceson of Troy, Samantha, Andrew and Tyler Chase, all of Kansas City, Kan.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Peter J. Debartolo of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Middleburgh.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Fire Department, Main Street, Cobleskill, or Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, 178 Grandview Drive, Cobleskill, NY 12043.

Gerald D. Hutton

DOWNSVILLE — Gerald D. Hutton, 80, passed away unexpectedly on March 27, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Hyndsville on Nov. 25, 1921, and was the son of Floyd and Anna (Dillenbeck) Hutton.

He graduated from Cobleskill High School, Cobleskill, in 1939, and received a bachelor of science degree in education from the State University College at Oneonta in 1947 and a master of education degree from St. Lawrence University in 1953.

Mr. Hutton began his teaching career at the Newcomb Central School, Newcomb, where he then became supervising principal in 1980. He left this position to become business manager at Cairo Central School, Cairo, in 1967.

He accepted the position of superintendent of schools for the Downsville Central School district, Downsville, a position from which he retired 10 years later. After retirement, Mr. Hutton continued in the education field by supervising student teachers for Hartwick College, Oneonta.

Mr. Hutton's military service began when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a cadet in 1942. He saw active duty from 1943-1945, as a pilot, flying with a Combat Cargo Squadron in China, India and Burma. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross and was discharged after World War II as a 1st lieutenant.

He was married to the former Dorothy I. Mallery of Albany on Aug. 13, 1960, in Albany. She predeceased him on April 10, 2001.

Dorothy and Gerald were summer residents of the Adirondacks at their camp on Eagle Craig Lake, near Tupper Lake.

Mr. Hutton was active in New York State Retired Teacher's Association, New York State Council of School Superintendents and AAA Tri County Motor Club, all in which he has served as an officer.

He was also a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion and the Colchester Community Church, all of Downsville.

An important organization for Gerald for the past 20 years has been the Association of Hump Pilots.

Dorothy and Gerald attended a reunion each year, which was held in different parts of the country. They had many friends from this organization, and Gerald attended the last reunion in  Washington, D.C., in August 2001.

He is survived by two brothers-in-law, John S. Mallery, Long Lake, and Les Brown, Cobleskill; and nieces and nephews, Lucinda Mallery, Ithaca, Susan Gurian, Tenafly, N.J., Judith Duffy, Hood River, Ore., Margaret Mallery, Kentfield,  Calif., Timothy Mallery, Williamsport, Pa., Lesley Ann Nelson and Dale Gersch, Albany.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Colchester Community Church in Downsville, with the Rev. Maybelle Renzi, pastor of the Colchester Community Church, officiating, with interment at the Seward Center Cemetery, Schoharie County.

The family will be in attendance at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville, on Friday, April 12, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Those wishing to remember Mr. Hutton through memorial donations are asked to consider the Downsville Rescue Squad, the Downsville Lions Club or the Colchester Community Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville.

Marjorie R. Bachman

SIDNEY — Marjorie R. Bachman, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Aug. 2, 1923, in  Johnson City, the daughter of the late Jay and Irma (Head) Borden.

She was married to Emerson G. Bachman on Aug. 8, 1942, in Unadilla. Mr. Bachman predeceased her on Sept. 18, 1996.

She had been a resident of Sidney for the last 28 years and had previously resided in Mount Upton and Unadilla.

At one time she and her late husband owned and operated the former Wood Shed and the former Sugar Bowl in Unadilla. For a time, Marjorie was employed at the Unadilla Public Library as a librarian.

Mrs. Bachman is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jerry Losie of West Davenport; her sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Bonnie Bachman of Delhi and Keith and Jean Bachman of Oneonta; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Hugh and Donald Borden.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Public Library.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Gerald H. Atwell

MILFORD — Mr. Gerald H. Atwell, 68, of Milford, died Tuesday morning, April 9, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer, with his family at his side.

Jerry was born in Oneonta on March 11, 1934, the son of Hubert and Lulu (Fox) Atwell.

Gerald was a Milford area resident his entire life and attended Milford schools.

He married Nancy Waters in Oneonta on Jan. 15, 1956.

Gerald worked for many years for Utter Trucking. He also owned and operated his dairy farm. After his retirement from trucking, he worked part-time for the Town of Milford Highway Department.

Jerry enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, fishing, his antique car and especially his family.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy; three sons and their spouses, Chuck and Marilyn Atwell, Rick Atwell and Beth Finch and Gene and Bernadette Atwell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Thomas Finch and Lisa and Douglas Pegos; two sisters-in-law, Inga and Betty Waters; 12 grandchildren, Bonnie, Kelly, Eric and Melissa Atwell, Steven and Breanna Bernhardt, Randy, Corey and Brian Atwell and Danielle and Nicole Finch; four great-grandchildren, Keanna, Daniel, Ryan and Caitlyn Atwell; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Randall Atwell, who died on Sept. 7, 1995.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Milford United Methodist Church in Milford, with the Rev. John C. Young of Schuyler Lake officiating.

Burial will be private at a later date.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, April 11, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, NY 13807 or to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
