June I. Harris

OTEGO — June I. Harris, 76, of Otego, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at the Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was a very independent, strong-willed person.

She was born Feb. 21, 1926, in Hartwick, the daughter of Harold Daniels and Isabell (Richards) Daniels Smith.

She cherished her childhood years in Gilbertsville, growing up with her five siblings.

She graduated in 1944, from Gilbertsville Central School and attended the Utica School of Commerce.

She held various office work positions around Utica and New Berlin.

In 1988, she retired from the accounting department of the New York Central Mutual Insurance Co. in Edmeston.

She was an avid reader and loved jigsaw and word puzzles. She also enjoyed embroidery, latch work, wallpapering, painting and refinishing furniture, playing cards and watching television.

She loved flowers, particularly red ones and bird watching. One of her greatest joys was collecting mice, most of which were gifts from family and friends.

Above all, she loved her family and would do anything she could for them. Family get-togethers were her favorite times.

She is survived by four children, a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Susan Potter of Mohawk, a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and David Wilkinson of Otego, a daughter, Wendy Ruffles of Otego, and a daughter, Kimberly Nelson and her companion, Michael Carlson of Alameda,  Calif.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, Bonnie Allen of Herkimer, Melissa Fischer of Mohawk, Kari Potter of Herkimer, Cory Ruffles of Otego, Jessica Backus and Ryan Nelson of Almeda,  Calif.; three brothers, Richard Daniels of Gilbertsville, Eugene (Stub) Daniels of Plainview,  Texas, and Charles (Bud) Daniels of South Zanesville, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Philip Nichols of Gilbertsville; three aunts, Dora Osborne of Gilbertsville, Viola Harrington of New Berlin and Minnie Pope of South New Berlin; two uncles, Herb Richards of South New Berlin and Ralph Richards of Mount Upton; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; a stepfather, Frank Smith; three husbands; a brother, Harold (Danny) Daniels; and a sister, Marie Nichols.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Fox Nursing Home in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Jean J. Judd

WALTON — Jean  Jones Judd of Walton passed away at her home after an extended illness Monday, April 8, 2002.

She was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Walton, to Gerald W. and Clara Stokes Jones.

Jean was raised in Walton where she returned with her husband upon retirement.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Colonia N.J.

Jean will be remembered as a devoted and loved wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family.

Jean Judd is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Bernard F. Judd, at home in Walton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy and Butch Neale, Walton, and Jo Judd, Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Jacqueline Judd, Maryland; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Scott Valentine, Virginia, Gale Neale, Kyle Neale and Katherine Judd; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Bud Caffery and Irene and James Northrup, all of Walton.

Also surviving is one aunt, Adelia Signor, Florida.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Bernard Butler, Hardy and Mona Judd, Beverly and Robert Horton and Peter and Mary Judd, all of  Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Jones.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where friends may call Wednesday, April 10, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. and also from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

The funeral will be held Thursday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Joe Bokel officiating and burial in the Walton Cemetery.

Contributions to the Delaware County office of Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753 would be appreciated.

Clara Ploutz

MARGARETVILLE — Funeral and committal services for Clara Ploutz, who died Feb. 20, 2002, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, pastor of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

Following the services at the Roxbury Cemetery family and friends are invited to the Arena Fire Department Hall for a reception.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Caslyn W. Squires

MARGARETVILLE — Caslyn W. Squires, 75, of Margaretville, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Feb. 9, 1927, in Denver, the daughter of Irving Squires and Lucie Kelly.

She was a dietary aide at Margaretville Memorial Hospital for 43 years.

Caslyn was a lifelong area resident. She attended Margaretville Central School. She was a member of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

Caslyn was a person who loved cats and dogs.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Squires Fairbairn, Margaretville; and three nephews, Dennis, Bruce and Daron Squires.

She was predeceased by her mother and father; and one brother, Barry Squires.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Advent Christian Church.

Contributions may be made in memory of Caslyn W. Squires to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Robert V. Riddell

COLLIERSVILLE — Robert V. Riddell, 75, of Colliersville, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, after a brief illness peacefully at his home with his family.

He was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Colliersville, the son of Alton B. and Mabel P. (Stilwell) Riddell.

He married the former Janice Church on July 24, 1956, who survives him.

Mr. Riddell was a lifelong resident of Colliersville.

He was a member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church from 1942 to the present and was very active in the church holding many offices as well as teaching Sunday school for 25 years.

He also attended the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, for many years.

He entered the United States Navy in 1945 upon graduation from Oneonta High School and served on board the Destroyer USS Taussig and the USS Alamosa A.K. 156 until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He worked briefly for Seward Sand and Gravel of Colliersville and for six years at the Milford Highway Department. He worked for 38 years as a tool and die maker, 14 years of which were as a tool and mold maker.

He started his tool and die making career in 1952 at the former Enterprise Aluminum, Oneonta, through July 1963, when it closed. From August 1963 through November 1977, he worked for American Plastics in Bainbridge, and then at Del-Met Inc., Walton, from November 1977 to February 1991, when he retired.

He was a 37-year member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and on the Town of Milford Planning Board for several years.

He was a member of the Cooperstown Junction Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed gardening in his Cooperstown Junction garden and enjoyed cutting wood and taking long walks on the old family farm. He was an avid jogger for 30 years and was a caregiver and support person to family, friends and neighbors for many years.

Mr. Riddell is survived by his wife, Janice Church Riddell; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Riddell Kent and her husband, Steven L. Kent, of Oneonta; his stepmother, Helen Riddell of Cooperstown Junction; three sisters-in-law, Edna Brandow of Binghamton, Helen Slocum of Oneonta and Edith Loller of Fairport, formerly of Sidney; and one brother-in-law and his wife, Edward and Irene Church of Oneonta. He also is survived by nieces and one nephew; and his faithful companion, his dog, Buster.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert B. "Bobby" Riddell, who died Sept. 27, 1974.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, from the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the church, as well as the Rev. Spencer van Gulick, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Friday evening, April 12, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery, Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, the Elk Creek Cemetery Association care of Nancy Malavic treasurer, 185 Tuscan Rd., Worcester, NY 12197 or the Colliersville Cemetery Association for the cemetery in Cooperstown Junction, P.O. Box 1, Colliersville, NY 13747.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Charlotte S. Smith

SYRACUSE — Charlotte S. Smith, 85, of Syracuse, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville.

She was born Oct. 25, 1916, in East Worcester, the daughter of Victor Guy and Leah (Guernsey) Snyder.

She married Matthias E. Smith of Worcester on Oct. 8, 1937, in Binghamton.

After graduation from East Worcester Union School, she attended Browne's Business School in Jamaica.

During two different periods, she was employed at the Wilber National Bank in Oneonta.

Always active in the Worcester United Methodist Church, Mrs. Smith was superintendent of its Sunday school for many years and while in that capacity was instrumental in the addition of the educational building which was named in her honor.

Also she served as president of the local WSCS for several years and as president of the Oneonta District WSCS for four years.

In 1965, she moved with her husband to Fayetteville and continued her interest there in the United Methodist Church and its women's organization.

After her husband's retirement, they returned to Worcester where they spent their summers with winters in Bradenton, Fla.

For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Worcester Women's club and served that organization in many capacities including president at different times. She was also a member of the Schenevus Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Worcester and Schoharie County Historical Societies.

Active with her husband in Grange work, she was a member of Worcester Grange and its higher degrees. She had served in several local Grange offices and as Otsego County Juvenile Grange Deputy and on State Grange committees.

In 1996, she and her husband moved into an adult retirement home in Syracuse.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Matthias Smith, of Fayetteville; a son, Lowell and wife, Judy, Smith of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Ellen and husband, Keith, Butler and Jill Smith; two great-granddaughters, Allison and Joanna Butler; a sister, Leah Benjamin of Coral Gables, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jeanne Smith.

Calling hours will be held at the Worcester United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the funeral service time at 11 a.m. The Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Smith's memory to the Worcester United Methodist Church or the Worcester Historical Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Gerald H. Atwell

MILFORD — Mr. Gerald H. Atwell, 68, of Milford, died Tuesday morning, April 9, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer, with his family at his side.

Jerry was born in Oneonta on March 11, 1934, the son of Hubert and Lulu (Fox) Atwell.

Gerald was a Milford area resident his entire life and attended Milford schools.

He married Nancy Waters in Milford on Jan. 15, 1956.

Gerald drove for Utter Trucking for 24 years and for two years was on the mail delivery route with Utters. He also owned and operated his dairy farm. After his retirement from trucking, he worked part-time for the Town of Milford Highway Department.

Jerry enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, fishing, his antique car and especially his family.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy; three sons and their spouses, Chuck and Marilyn Atwell, Rick Atwell, and Gene and Bernadette Atwell, all of Milford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Thomas Finch of Brackney, Pa.; and Lisa and Douglas Pegos of Port Crane; two sisters-in-law, Inga and Betty Waters; 12 grandchildren, Bonnie Atwell, Kelly Atwell and Brian McAdams, Eric Atwell, Melissa Atwell and Scott Jubar, Steven and Breanna Bernhardt, Randy, Corey and Brian Atwell and Jamie, Danielle and Nicole Finch; four great-grandchildren, Keanna, Daniel, Ryan and Caitlyn Atwell; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Randall Atwell, who died on Sept. 7, 1995.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Milford United Methodist Church in Milford, with the Rev. John C. Young of Schuyler Lake officiating.

Burial will be private at a later date.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, April 11, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, NY 13807 or to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Eleanor Watson

MIDDLEFIELD — Mrs. Eleanor Watson, 78 years, of Middlefield, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at The Meadows.

She was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Stonington, Conn., the daughter of Walter S. and Bertha F. (Sloan) Smith.

She married George Heaver who predeceased her in 1968. Eleanor and George moved to the Oneonta area from Long Island, purchasing a farm, which together they operated. After the death of her husband, she moved to the Wells Bridge area, at which time she did various jobs such as waitressing and baking.

In 1970, Eleanor married John Watson who predeceased her on April 26, 1997.

Eleanor was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, jigsaw puzzles, cooking and baking, reading, traveling and playing cards.

Her family will remember her for her devotion to animals. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children, George Heaver of Center Beach, Long Island, Allen Heaver of Binghamton, John and Michelle Watson of Chenango Forks, Robert and Tania Watson of Binghamton and Ellen and John Cobb of Morris; 13 grandchildren, Carol Ann Bernstein, Kimberly Lee, Vanessa Heaver, Sean Heaver, Laural, Krista, Caden, Callie and Colton Watson, Adrianna and Alex Watson, and Tara and Latisha Cobb; two sisters, Myrtle Andrews of Wilcox, Ariz., and Olive Clancy of Gainesville,  Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Thomas, on Nov. 30, 2001; and one sister, Milicent Bruno; and two brothers, Robert Lawson and Jimmy Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Ned Eastman officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date at the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Friday, April 12, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time friends may call.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Theresa M. Caruso

DELHI — Theresa M. Caruso, 71, of Federal Hill, Delhi, began her journey to eternal life on Monday, April 8, 2002, with her family by her side at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, following an extended illness.

One of 10 children of Mariano and Angelina (Altamari) Capalbo, she was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Brooklyn, where she married Anthony B. Caruso on Aug. 26, 1955.

Theresa was a Delhi resident since 1973, a graduate of the nursing program at the State University College of Technology at Delhi and, subsequently, a nurse at the Delaware County Infirmary.

A communicant of St. Peter's R.C. Church, her very essence was within her family, to which she was devoted.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Anthony B. Caruso; two daughters, Toni Case of Esperance and Michele (David) Bailey of Cayuga; a son, Anthony M. (Carol) Caruso of Delhi; three grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Dearie and Ann Pizzimenti of New York City, and Nina Weisensee of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. The Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell will officiate, after which the family will receive friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9 Ave., Miami, Fla. 33163.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.
