Winifred L. Schuyler

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Winifred Schuyler passed away Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her daughter's home.

She was born March 23, 1927, in Salem, Ind., the daughter of Leslie and Rebekah Leatherman.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene C. Schuyler.

Mrs. Schuyler was a retired clerical, and a lifetime member of the Montclair Opretta Club.

She is survived by her children, a daughter, Susan R. Burdsall of Cooperstown; three sons, Kenneth E. Schuyler of Montclair, N.J., Lee A. Schuyler of Columbia, Md., and Douglas C. Schuyler of Venice, Fla.; and a grandson, Christopher. She is also survived by her sister, Hannah Jacobs of Little Egg Harbour, N.J.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair, N.J.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mrs. Schuyler's memory can be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or a local hospice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Wallace M. McLain

SEBRING, Fla. — Wallace M. McLain, 64, of Sebring, Fla., passed away Saturday, April 13, 2002, in Sebring.

Mr. McLain was born in Lexington, N.Y., and had been a resident of Sebring since 1999, moving from Davenport.

He was a carpenter in the construction business, and of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte McLain, Sebring, Fla.; sons, Scott McLain, Sebring, Steven McLain, Pittsburgh, Pa., James Brown III, Tulsa, Okla., Michael Haribet, Oneonta, N.Y., Raymond Haribet, Oneonta; daughters, Jessie Thorsland, Milford, N.Y., Sabrina McLain, Mount Vision, N.Y., Eva Breese, Davenport, N.Y., Sue O'Donnell, Davenport, N.Y.; sisters, Minnie Huck, Hobart, N.Y., Anna McCulley, Davenport, N.Y.; brother, Donald McLain, Davenport, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 7 p.m. at Davenport Presbyterian Church in Davenport, N.Y.

Cremation arrangements handled by Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, Sebring, Fla.

Vera Van Dyke

ENDICOTT — Vera Connor Kimball Van Dyke of Endicott, born Dec. 30, 1917, Otego, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Earl W. Kimball, in 1967; and her second husband, Roy H. Van Dyke, in 1998; and a brother, Hugh Connor.

She is survived by two daughters, Roberta Kimball Ackerson and husband, Fred, of Endicott, and Ruzilla Kimball Fink of East Setauket, Long Island: eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Doris Ruff, Florida, and Betty Jewwett, Reno, Nev.; also several nieces and nephews.

Vera worked at Scintilla in Sidney. She was a member of Otego Chapter of the Eastern Star.

She lived in Savannah, Ga., and Summerton, S.C., for 30 years and returned to this area four years ago.

Memorial services will be held at a later time.

Arrangements by the Allen Memorial Home, Main Street, Endicott.

Patrick J. Brennan

COOPERSTOWN — Patrick J. Brennan, 75, of Cooperstown, and formerly of East Norwich, Long Island, died late Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1926, in New York City, a son of Joseph B. and Sarah (O'Connor) Brennan.

He married Maureen Duffy on Sept. 11, 1954, in Brooklyn.

Pat grew up in the  Washington Heights section of New York City and graduated from Commerce High School.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

Following the war, he attended Fordham University, graduating in 1949. He later attended Fordham Law School and graduated from there in 1954.

For more than 30 years, Pat was director of leasing for the General Motors Corp. building on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the sale of the property to Corporate Property Investors, he remained in that position until his retirement in 1997.

Pat was a member of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, a past president of the Oyster Bay/East Norwich Police Boys Club and an avid New York Giants Football fan.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Maureen, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Eileen Brennan of Oyster Bay, Long Island, and Colleen Weale and her husband, John, of Beaconsfield, Quebec, Canada; one son, Thomas Brennan and his wife, Jacinta, of Milford; eight grandchildren, Meaghan and Daniel Espinosa, Sarah and Elizabeth Weale, and Julia, Emily, Fiona and Grace Brennan; one sister, Catherine Moran of Rockaway Beach; one brother, John Brennan and his wife, Fran, of Brooklyn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening, April 19, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., in Cooperstown, when Pat's family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Thomas W. Baker

TRIBES HILL — Thomas Wilbur Baker, 72, of Tribes Hill, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, as a result of a farming accident.

He was born July 7, 1929, in Neversink, the son of Arthur and Edith (Parish) Baker.

He was married to Ethelyn Baker of Garrattsville.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and worked all of his life as a dairy farmer.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Denise Lewis of Mount Upton, Timothy Baker of Gilbertsville, John Baker, Richard and (Amanda) Baker, and a daughter-in-law, Chastidy Baker, all of Garrattsville, and a son, James Baker of Ames.

He is also survived by his brothers, Ralph and (Melba) Baker of Amsterdam, Cecil and (Carol) Baker of Tribes Hill, John and (Caroline) Baker and Virgil Baker of Florida, N.Y., Robert and (Cheryl) Baker of Amsterdam; and a sister, Mary and (Gene) McGinnis of Amsterdam.

He was blessed by his grandchildren, James Baker Jr. of Amsterdam, Robert, Sarah, Courtney, Andrew, Tara and Thomas Baker Jr., all of Garrattsville, Kris Baker of Mohawk, Rebecca and Stefnie Baker of Gloversville, and Jessica Lewis and Ashley Hill of Mount Upton; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas J. Baker; a sister-in-law, Beverly I. Monk; a granddaughter, Katlin Hill; and his brothers, Harry and Floyd Baker.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until service time. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Thomas  Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Jack R. Coon

SCHENEVUS — Jack R. Coon, 62, passed away suddenly Friday, April 12, 2002, at his home.

He was born April 29, 1939, in Ossining, the son of the late James and Carol (Anderson) Coon.

He was a graduate of Ossining High School Class of 1957.

Following high school he joined the United States Navy, serving from 1957 to 1961, on the USS Piper 409.

He married Marjorie Partlow in 1961.

Mr. Coon was a retired corrections officer from the Department of Corrections in Stormville, N.Y. He was a former Mason at the Schultzville Lodge, before moving upstate.

He dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading and writing poems.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Coon, of Schenevus; two daughters, Cynthia L. Engel of Cambridge, Vt., and Cheri L. Szostak of Big Indian, N.Y.; two grandsons, Martin Szostak and Erik Engel; a granddaughter, Ashley Ann Szostak; a brother, James Coon of Ossining; a sister, Nancy Zingaro of Ossining; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester from 2 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, officiating.

At Mr. Coon's request, he will be cremated following the service.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Thomas M. Brennan

ANDES — Thomas M. Brennan, 56, passed away Monday, April 15, 2002, as a result of an accident on Barkaboom Road, town of Andes.

He was born Sept. 20, 1945, in Metuchen, N.J., the son of Vincent Brennan and Helen Bishop.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1968, serving in Vietnam from 1967-68, acting as a chief gunner on helicopter crew.

He was a retired plumber.

He moved to Andes from New Jersey, having a home in Andes for several years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 65, Metuchen, N.J., a life member of VFW Post 1400 and Local Union No. 24, Newark, N.J., of the Plumbers-Pipefitters and Sprinklerfitters.

He is survived by his mother, Helen Brennan, Massachusetts; and sisters, Bernadette and brother-in-law, Ronald Kaschner, and Sheila Brennan, all of New Jersey. He was the uncle of Renee and Aurora Kaschner and Randy and Erin Brennan.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 10 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as the celebrant.

Committal services will be held at a later date in the Shavertown Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours will be held Friday, April 19, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Charles L. Howard

SPRAKERS — Charles L. Howard, 58, of 206 Monk Road, Sprakers, formerly of Grand Gorge, passed away April 16, 2002, at his residence in Sprakers.

He was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Prattsville, the son of Orlin L. Howard and Florence Irene Buhl.

He married Linda Harris on Aug. 13, 1966, in Portlandville.

He graduated from Grand Gorge Central School. He worked at the Life Saver Plant in Canajoharie, and later worked at the Buddy L. Toy Factory, Gloversville.

Charles enjoyed going to antique car auctions.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Howard, Sprakers; one sister, Barbara Howard, Atlanta, Ga.; one brother-in-law, David Harris; one nephew; one uncle; and two aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Calling hours will be held Friday, April 19, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Glenn H. Webb

SHERBURNE — Glenn H. "Webbie" Webb, 71, of Classic Street, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

Born Sept. 22, 1930, in Norwich, he was a son of Charles I. and Cora Smith Webb, and was a graduate of Sherburne High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

On July 14, 1951, Glenn was united in marriage to the former Retha Westover in Fort Worth,  Texas.

A life resident of Sherburne, he was associated with Webb & Sons for several years, and then owned and operated Glenn H. Webb Excavating for 30 years, returning to Webb & Sons until his retirement.

Mr. Webb was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Sherburne.

He was a life member of the Sherburne Fire Department, where he served as first assistant chief, as well as many other offices.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 876 of Sherburne and was a member of the Sentinels Drill Team.

He was also parade marshal for the Sherburne Pageant of Bands for more than 20 years.

Surviving are his wife, Retha Webb, of Sherburne; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Michael Hicks of Sherburne, Debra and Brian Phelps of Baldwinsville and Denise Anne and Bill Doliver of Mooresville, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Glenn Webb and Vicky Paddock of Sherburne, Donald "Butch" and Bonnie Knapp Webb of Hartwick and Douglas Charles and Kristine Palmer Webb of Sherburne; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Mary Webb of Norwich; 18 grandchildren, Tiffany Webb, Tracy Webb Fowler, Jennifer and Sara Paddock, Glenn Charles Webb, Kristi Mane Webb, Jeremy, Josh and Jessica Hicks, Jennifer and Katie Seymour, Canaan and his wife, Anna Phelps, Mindi Phelps, Cory, Derek, Devin and Cody Webb and Tyler Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Breanna Foster and Cassi and Jordan Doss; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Julian Webb; and a sister, Eloise McManus.

Funeral services will be held at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, from the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany on Classic Street in Sherburne.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the West Hill Cemetery in Sherburne.

Friends are invited and may call at the Burgess Funeral Home, at 10 South Main St. in Sherburne, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Sherburne Fire Department, the Sherburne Emergency Squad, or the American Legion Post No. 876, Sherburne NY.

Betty Elizabeth Barrett

MARGARETVILLE — Betty Elizabeth Barrett, 80, of Margaretville, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in Brunswick, Maine.

She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Margaretville, daughter of Roy and Viola (Harrington) Place.

She married Ransom R. Barrett on Jan. 12, 1944, in Margaretville. He predeceased her April 19, 2001.

Betty worked as a chief medical secretary at the Veteran's Hospital in Wilmington, Del.

She moved to Margaretville in 1982, from Wilmington, Del.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville; Ladies Auxiliary of Middletown American Legion Post 216; election inspector for the village of Margaretville.

She graduated from Margaretville Central School. Betty enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Dusty Barrett of Orr's Island, Maine, Bill and Donna Barrett of Brunswick, Maine, and Don and Phyllis Barrett of Brunswick, Maine; brother-in-law, Kenneth Miller of Margaretville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one sister, Millicent Miller.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Margaretville, with the Rev. George Carpenter and the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating.

Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery in Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Contributions in memory of Betty Barrett may be made to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville NY.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

Alice Mae Barrows

UNADILLA — Alice Mae Barrows, 88, of Unadilla, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born Dec. 19, 1913, in the town of Union, the daughter of Willis and Mae (Walker) Titus.

She was married to Charles M. Barrows on May 30, 1936, in Binghamton. Mr. Barrows predeceased her on July 24, 1975.

Alice was a graduate of Binghamton High School, a member of the New York State Covered Bridge Society, a lover of dogs and carousels.

She lived in many places during her life including Franklin, Old Forge, Phoenix, Ariz., and Unadilla.

Alice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sandy Barrows of Otego; her granddaughters and their husbands, Penny and David Seeger of West Oneonta and Karie and Joseph Kaffko of West Chesterfield, N.H.; her great-granddaughter, Michelle Seeger; also several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Paul and George Titus, Olga Hall and Louise Prentice.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, April 21, 2002, from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions in Alice's memory may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, Sidney, NY 13838 or the NYS Covered Bridge Society, 958 Grove St., Elmira NY 14901.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home of Unadilla.
