Richard Holdrege

AFTON — Richard Holdrege, 84, of Afton, died April 17, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Home in Binghamton.

He was born on June 8, 1917, in Afton.

Richard was employed as a supervisor for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when he retired.

He was a past mayor of Afton and the chairman of the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency.

Richard was also a member of the Chenango County Planning Board and the Afton Fire Department for years.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Luann Holdrege of Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and James Lacey; four grandchildren, Sean McClure of Toronto, Ontario, Shelagh McClure of Montreal, Quebec, and Erin and Amy Holdrege of Sidney; two great-grandchildren, Ceilidh and Flynn Merk of Montreal, Quebec; two stepbrothers, Ray and Roy Holdrege; and a stepsister, Shirley Gould.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Afton Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Melvin R. Yager

St. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Melvin R. Yager, 84, most recently of St. Petersburg, Fla., and formerly of Tampa, Fla., died Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Carrington Nursing Home in St. Petersburg.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1918, in Oneonta, N.Y., the son of Charles and Dorothy (Kearney) Yager.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Tampa.

Survivors include a sister, Viola Wilsey of Wallingford, Pa.; along with several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani, associate pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta, on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Irene F. Ardolf

FRANKLIN — Irene F. Ardolf, 77, of Franklin and formerly of Stamford, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2002, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Nov. 27, 1924, in Sidney Center, the daughter of Harry and Alice (Reynolds) Fletcher.

She was self-employed home maintenance person in the Delaware County area.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the Stamford American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sisters, Florence Beers of Sidney and Elizabeth Grant of  Jefferson; one brother, Harold Fletcher of Sidney Center; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

William Daley

ONEONTA — Graveside services for Mr. William Daley, who passed away Jan. 14, 2002, will be held Monday, April 22, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Tracie Martin officiating.

George L. Steele

MASONVILLE — George L. Steele, 72, of 525 Olmstead Road, Unadilla, N.Y., fought the battle against cancer with a tremendous amount of strength and courage until he went to his eternal rest on Friday morning April 19, 2002, at Wilson Hospital,  Johnson City, N.Y.

He was born July 10, 1929, in New York City, the son of the late Charles A. and Margaret Anna Kovas Steele.

On Oct. 1, 1994, he married Mary  Jones in Masonville, N.Y.

George was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country during Korea. For 29 years he was a member of the New York Police Department, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi, Post 183 American Legion, the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 V.F.W., Loyal Order of the Moose #277 and the Sidney Chapter 2175 BPOE, all in Sidney, N.Y. George also was a member of the Amvets, Delaware County Shield and the P.B.A.

He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Steele, of Masonville; five daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Kean Turner of Masonville, Cheryl Zienkowicz of Glendale, Peggy and Red Bardes of Queens Village, N.Y., Kim Fox of Merrick, N.Y, Amy Steele of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Gyetko of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and 14 grandchildren. A niece, Dr. Margaret Rose Gyetko, and nephew, Stephen Charles Gyetko, also are surviving.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2002, from the C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher of McGraw officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call Sunday at their convenience with his family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. The American Legion will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening and the Elks Lodge will follow with services at 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Masonville Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 362, Masonville, NY 13804.

Hans Overgaard

LAURENS — Hans Overgaard, 93, of Laurens, died Friday, April 18, 2002, at Martin Luther Home in Clinton, N.Y., after a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec. 5, 1908, in Haderslev, Denmark, to Jens and Inger Overgaard.

He married Edith Hansen on Sept. 30, 1933, in Laurens, who died July 11, 1995.

In his earlier years, Mr. Overgaard was employed with the D&H railroad for 20 years before his employment at the East End Lumber Co. in Oneonta, and most recently owned and operated the Arrowhead General Store in Laurens, until his retirement.

He had been an area resident since arriving in this country from Denmark in 1921. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens and was a former member of the Laurens Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marilyn Overgaard of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two granddaughters Jenanne Chittick of Sommerland, Fla., and Lisa Gilligan of Castalian, Tenn.; two brothers, Verner and Kaj Overgaard; two sisters, Meta Robinson and Asta Terwilliger; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, George Overgaard.

A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, April 22, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Laurens with the Rev. Robert Busch officiating.

Burial will follow in Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Martin Luther Home, 108 Utica Rd., Clinton, NY 13323.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Erwin D. Caswell Jr.

FRANKLIN — Erwin D. "Sonny" Caswell, Jr., 81, a longtime Franklin resident, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Roxbury, the son of Erwin D. and Bertha (Bookhout) Caswell.

A laborer in earlier years, Erwin had been employed on the Sickler farm in Franklin for 17 years, and subsequently lived with the Lambrecht family in Franklin for an additional 23 years until becoming a resident at "Countryside," Delhi, in November 2000.

Sonny enjoyed gardening, was a member of the New Hope Community Church, Walton, and held a special place in the hearts of those who knew him.

Surviving are a sister, Ada Wright of Monroe, Conn.; several nieces; and his longtime friends and caregivers, Lorraine and Edward Lambrecht and family of Franklin.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the New Hope Community Church, Walton. The Rev. Larry Light and the Rev. Jack Steel will officiate, and cremation will be made through Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial contributions in Sonny's memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Marion Lutzenkirchen

MARGARETVILLE — Marion Lutzenkirchen, 88, of Margaretville, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at her residence.

Born Oct. 21, 1913, in New York City, she was the daughter of John Stiefelmaier and Marie Seifert.

She was married to Charles Lutzenkirchen. He died Oct. 14, 1983.

She moved to Margaretville in 1992 from Merrick, Long Island.

She is survived by her granddaughter Linda Fischer of Kingston and was predeceased by her daughter, Doris.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time.

Burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pine Lawn.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Betty A. Hobbie

UNADILLA — Betty A. Hobbie, 77, of 1670 state Route 7 in Unadilla, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 18, 2002, surrounded by the loving arms of her family at home in Unadilla.

She was born Dec. 28, 1924, in Middleburgh, the daughter of the late Martin and Bertha Shaver Almy.

On March 15, 1944, she married Norris Hobbie in St. Charles, Mo.

Betty for many years worked for the Amphenol Corp. as an inspector. She retired in 1973. After her retirement, Betty and Norris purchased the Hamden Inn in Hamden. They sold the Inn in 1980.

Betty was an active member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 502 in Sidney. She received the Regents Degree from the Moose several years ago. She was the organizer for the mixed shuffleboard tournaments.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Norris L. Hobbie, of Unadilla; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Lewis Talbot of Mesquite,  Texas, and Barbara and Gary Lord of Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Jackie Hobbie of Unadilla; nine grandchildren and families, Tammy and Mike Butts, Jeff Harrington and Dee, Terry Becker, Nicole and Brian Redmond, Michelle Yeager, Shayne and Toni Becker, Jenniffer and Josh Bonker, Holly Hobbie and Bud Lord. She is survived by six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty was predeceased by her daughter, Beverly Carpenter; sister, Hazel Scofield; and her two brothers, George and Willard Almy.

Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

The Women of the Moose will conduct memorial services at 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Edmund R. Jesionowski

FLY CREEK — Mr. Edmund R. Jesionowski, 86, of Fly Creek, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Compassionate Care Hospice, St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, N.J., with his sons at his side.

He was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Pepacton, the son of Stanislaus and Hedwig (Pommerenke) Jesionowski.

He was married to the late Helen Polinski Jesionowski. He was married to Goldie Sauer Jesionowski, she survives.

Edmund attended Oneonta High School.

He was retired from the Otsego County Highway Department road crew and the Dairymen's League Co-op, after many years of loyal service.

Edmund was an avid bowler who participated in many local leagues and bowled in many pro-ams around the country. He also loved to just get in his car and travel the back country roads.

Survivors besides his wife, Goldie Jesionowski, of Fly Creek; include two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Ingrid Jesionowski of Jacobstown, N.J., and Robert and Marge Jesionowski of Snyder; three sisters, Mary Wilbur, Anna Gunther, and Frances Sheldon; grandchildren, Yvette and Russ Comisky, Eric and Karen Jesionowski, Amy Jesionowski, Robert Jesionowski Jr. and his fiance, Liz Marquette; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Madison Comisky and Erin Rose Jesionowski; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley with the Rev. Richard Jesionowski, nephew of Edmund, officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Contributions in Edmund's memory may be made to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 516 High St., Mt. Holly, NJ 08060 or The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33 W, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Viola M. Bridger

ONEONTA — Mrs. Viola M. (Dolly) Bridger, 78, passed away, after a short and courageous battle with cancer, on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Frederick John and Viola (Klaus) Baumann Jr. In 1938, Dolly and her family moved to Oneonta.

On Sept. 7, 1944, she married Albert (Bud) Bridger at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Dolly worked for 24 years as the Catalog Department Manager at Sears in Oneonta. Prior to that she worked at the Mica Plant in Oneonta.

She enjoyed camping and horses. Together, her and Bud belonged to several horse clubs.

Dolly was a wonderful and loving wife and mother and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Albert (Bud) Bridger, of Oneonta; two daughters and their husbands, CarolAnn and Albert Bagnardi of Oneonta and JoAnn and Diz LaMonica of Oneonta; two sisters, Audrey Naatz of Emmons and June Anne and her husband, Robert, VanBuren of Schenectady; several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

Memorial services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that anyone who wishes to make memorial contributions may make them to either the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Viola (Dolly) Bridger.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marjorie A. Banuat

MARGARETVILLE — Marjorie A. Banuat, 81, of Margaretville, passed away Friday, April 19, 2002, at the O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Marjorie has been residing at Hearthstone Home for Adults in Hobart for two years.

She was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Bovina Center, the daughter of Anthony Banuat and Margaret Craig.

She graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1938, and attended Albany Business College.

She was a licensed practical nurse at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville for 40 years. She retired on Jan. 6, 1988.

She taught school in Africa for three years.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Margaretville, the Word of Life Fellowship in Schroon Lake and also R.I.D. (Remove Intoxicated Drivers.)

She is survived by one sister, Catharine Foster of Fort Plain; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Mary B. Reynolds; and one brother, Craig Banuat.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with Diane Wickham officiating. Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours will be held from noon until service time on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Marjorie A. Banuat can be made to the Memorial Fund of the Margaretville-New Kingston United Presbyterian Church or the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, NY 12455.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.
