Violet D. Knight

NEW LISBON — Violet D. Knight, 77, of New Lisbon, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2002.

She was born in Maryland on Nov. 23, 1924, the daughter of Jay I. and Bessie (Ingerham) Knight.

She had lived near Gilbert Lake for the past 57 years.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Knight; and her brother, Jay Knight and his wife, Dorothy, all of New Lisbon. She is also survived by her aunt, Beatrice Folnsbee of Cold Brook; and several cousins.

Both of her parents predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the Living Water Faith Fellowship Church, 7 Lewis St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Ken. Brookens officiating.

The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Bassett Hospital, The Meadows and the Catskill Area Hospice for their kindness and concern.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Emma C. DuMond

LARGO, Fla. — Emma C. DuMond, 92, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Largo Hospital, Largo, Fla. She was formerly of Margaretville, N.Y.

She was born Dec. 3, 1909, in Arena, N.Y., daughter of Frank and Elva (McQueen) O'Connor.

Emma was a nurse at the Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta, N.Y.

Emma had spent the last several years in Florida after living in Margaretville and Oneonta.

She was a member of the Wesleyan Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia McLean of Largo, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville with the Rev. Royal Mattoon officiating.

Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held from noon until service time at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Clyde LeRoy Krofft

EAST GREENBUSH — A graveside funeral and committal service for Clyde LeRoy Krofft, 77, who died April 6, 2002, will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Full military honors will be accorded by Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

G. Duane Matthews

ONEONTA — G. Duane Matthews, 79, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Delhi, the son of Gordon and Hazel (Scott) Matthews.

He married the former Jean Thomas on Aug. 1, 1941, in Oneonta, who survives him.

Duane was a lifelong area resident of Oneonta, and was a graduate of Oneonta High School.

He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II.

In 1945, he started a moving business and in 1950, purchased Vet's Sanitation, Oneonta, of which his slogan was "Our business is picking up." In 1987, he started New York Environmental Services, a medical waste transport service and operated his businesses until his retirement in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Jean T. Matthews, of Oneonta; three daughters, Carole M. Overbey of Oneonta, Dr. Deborah J. Matthews of Lafayette, La., and Leanne M. Bookin of Otego; his stepmother, Agnes Matthews of Andes; one sister, Vera Matthews of Andes; and two grandchildren, Christopher Anecelle of New York City and Matthew Bookin of Otego. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of G. Duane Matthews will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mitchell Spring, pastor of Spirit and Truth Christian Assembly, Oneonta, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, NY 13417, in memory of G. Duane Matthews.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Orson (Jay) Patrick

SIDNEY CENTER — Orson (Jay) Patrick passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in the Manatee Hospital in Bradenton, Fla.

He was cremated and his ashes brought back for burial in the Sidney Center Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 1, 1912, in Loomis, the son of Fredrick and Minnie (Hotchkiss) Patrick.

He married Katherine Mildred Morenus in Sidney Center on Aug. 20, 1939. They were married more than 62 years.

He worked more than 33 years at Bendix Scintilla and retired in 1974.

Jay and his wife, Milly, lived in Sidney Center, and spent the winter months in Palmetto, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; one brother, Joseph Patrick and wife, Ella, of Unadilla; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and husband, Walter St. John, of Walton, Jean and husband, Elton Sanford, of Sidney Center, Joyce Terry of Sidney Center, Ann Morenus of Sidney Center, and Kathryn Mumford of Otego; brother-in-law, Frank Morenus and wife, Barbara, of Vestal.

He was predeceased by brothers, Leroy, Walter, James and Donald; sisters, Anna, Josephine and Cereta; sisters-in-law, Ruth Morenus, Beatrice (Morenus) Patterson; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Morenus and Rodney Gossoo.

A memorial service will be held at the Sidney Center Methodist Church on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 2 p.m. A luncheon will be served following the service.

Donations may be made to the Methodist Church in Sidney Center, N.Y.

Hubert H. Holden

ONEONTA — Hubert H. Holden, 80, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, April 23, 2002, after a brief illness.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was devoted to his family.

Hubert was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of Henry and Violetta (Shute) Holden.

He married Lois Gardner on July 4, 1945, in West Oneonta.

Hubert has resided in Oneonta for 56 years and grew up in Otego.

Hubert is survived by his wife, Lois, of 56 years; his children, Donald Holden Sr. and fiancee, Sue Kinderman, and his daughter and her husband, Mary Jane and Stanley Harrington, all of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Christine Ahearn of Arizona, Donald Holden Jr., Steven Harrington of Oneonta, Scott Harrington and his fiancee, Kerri McGrail, of West Oneonta; great-grandchildren, Susan and Michael Ahearn of Arizona, Thane Weigle of Laurens, Donald R. Holden of Oneonta; two sisters and their husbands, Ida and LeVern Mosier and Helene and Bill Nelson of Schenectady; his brothers-in-law and their wives, Ira and Marion Gardner of Oneonta and Stuart and Barbara Gardner of North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Eldred of Portlandville and Neva (Gene) Grzeskiewicz of California. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends; including his many camping friends at Meadow Vale Campground, where he enjoyed camping and helping around the campground.

He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Holden.

Hubert retired from Oneonta Oil and Fuel Co., Oneonta, where he held the position of Burner Service Manager. He was currently a courier for Wilber National Bank, Oneonta.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, for family and friends, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, that contributions may be made in Hubert's name to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert W. Saunders

ONEONTA — Dr. Robert W. Saunders, 82, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2002, after a brief illness at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born March 7, 1920, in Calais, Maine, the son of William and Ethel (Reilly) Saunders.

He married Jean C. Smith on April 22, 1943, in Hartford, Conn. Mrs. Saunders passed away Jan. 18, 1986.

Dr. Saunders served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations, where he participated in the Anzio Landing.

He has been a resident of Oneonta since 1947, and previously resided in Machias, Maine.

Dr. Saunders graduated from New York University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1946, and received his master's degree in 1947, from NYU, and his doctor of education also from NYU in 1956.

He has been on the faculty at the State University College at Oneonta since 1947, retiring as a professor in the education department in 1985.

Since his retirement he has been an active member of the United University Professions where he worked on behalf of retired faculty members.

He was a member of the St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta.

Bob is survived by his two sons, Robert F. Saunders of Oneonta and Dr. Brian S. Saunders of Ithaca; his twin brother, Franklin Saunders of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a niece.

Funeral services will be held in Calais, Maine, at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the Calais Cemetery, Calais, Maine.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905-4704.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Mabel A. Cavanagh

DELHI — Mabel A. Cavanagh, 90, a former Delhi resident, passed away Tuesday evening, April 23, 2002, in Little Egg Harbor, N.J.

The daughter of Frank H. and Annie (Duggan) Tayler, she was born June 29, 1911, in Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., and married Charles R. Cavanagh Jr., on June 18, 1938. He died March 6, 1992.

Before coming to Delhi in 1957, where she was a communicant of St. Peter's R.C. Church and an active supporter of Girl Scouts, Mabel lived in Allendale, N.J., and was a freelance reporter for the Bergen Record and weekly newspapers in Bergen County. A homemaker and Delhi resident for 38 years, she returned to New Jersey in 1995, to live with her daughter.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Ann and George Van Saun of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., and Mary and David Davis of Rocky Ridge, Md.; a son, Richard H. "Dick" Cavanagh of Oneonta; eight grandsons and their wives, Eric (Dawn), Butler, N.J., Phillip, San Diego, Peter (Dorothea), Kannapolis, N.C., and Matthew (Winsa) Van Saun, San Francisco, Patrick (Virginia), South Salem, and Christopher Cavanagh, Elmsford, Jacob (Kelly), Fredericksburg, Va., and Petty Officer Michael Davis, U.S. Coast Guard, Newport, R.I.; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan Cavanagh and Matthew Davis; and a sister, Mary Milliken, Haskell, N.J.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Tayler.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, when the family will be in attendance, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at St. Peter's Church. The Rev. Edward J. Ryan will preside, and burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Elmer J. Bliss

ONEONTA — A committal service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. for Elmer J. Bliss, who passed away March 7, 2002, at his home.

The service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Rob Kazinski, pastor of the Portlandville Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements were made by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Bertha Speenburgh

HOBART — Bertha Speenburgh, 70, of Hobart, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Hobart.

She was born July 26, 1931, in Long Eddy, the daughter of Thomas and Hazel (Furguson) Coddington.

She married Clifford Speenburgh, who survives at home; and a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Joel Birkett, Stamford; a son, Roger Coddington, Cochecton; a daughter, Arleta Geer, Cochecton; two sisters, Anna Deck and Thelma LeRoy, Hancock; many grandchildren; and nieces, Rosalie Gellow,  Pennsylvania, Angella Johnson,  Pennsylvania, Deb Irwin, Hancock, Connie Shea; and nephew, Ray Johnson, Hancock; and several other nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Calling hours will precede the service from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Cancer Society or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Paul A. Hults

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Paul A. Hults, 40, died suddenly on Sunday, April 21, 2002, in Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Laurens, N.Y.

Paul was the son of Norma Hilts of Arcadia, Fla., and the late Ralph E. Hults of Laurens.

He is also survived by his loving companion, Mary Healey; his grandmother, Marian Gundersen of Burlington, N.J.; two sisters, Carol Wilcox of Rotterdam, N.Y., and Sharon Powell of Franklin, N.Y.; a son, Nathan Hults of Oneonta, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

For those who wish to remember Paul, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army A.R.C., in memory of Paul Hults, Salvation Army A.R.C., 711 E.  Washington St., Indianapolis, Ind. 46202.

Ralph MacBlain

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Graveside service with military honors for Ralph MacBlain, age 68, of Little Lakes Road, Richfield Springs, who passed away Dec. 7, 2001, will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at 1 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Robert Bridger Sr.

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Robert A. Bridger Sr., 78, of 281 Continental Road, Cooperstown, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 26, 1924, in the town of Middlefield, the son of Floyd and Ida (Thayer) Bridger.

In 1945, he married Shirley Salisbury; she survives.

Mr. Bridger attended Cooperstown schools.

He owned and operated Genter Farms, his family dairy farm in East Springfield.

He was a member of Farm Bureau, Dairylea, Extension Service, Holstein Association, VanHornesville Co-op and the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield.

He served for 10 years on the school board for Springfield Central School.

Survivors besides his wife, Shirley Bridger, of East Springfield; include two sons, Richard Bridger of Milford and Gary Bridger of East Springfield; two daughters, Mary and Ray Roberts of Springfield Center and Sharon and Ken Smith of Fort Plain; a daughter- in-law, Barbara Bridger of Springfield Center; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Sara Bridger of Verona; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Milton Hart of Berne and Beverly and Arthur Blessin of Fly Creek; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jo Anne Herklotz; a son, Robert Bridger Jr.; a grandson, Mark Willoughby; two brothers, Norman and Raymond; and four sisters, Dorothy Van Brink, Helen Fink, Thelma Winner and Dora Gardner.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 29, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in East Springfield, with the Rev. Susan Burdsall officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery in Springfield Center.

Contributions in Mr. Bridger's memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders, P.O. Box 358, Springfield Center, NY 13468 or Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 504, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.
