Lawrence Gleason

SIDNEY — Lawrence E. Gleason, 79, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Wilson Hospital.

He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Endicott, to Erwin R. and Ruth A. (Pulling) Gleason.

He grew up and attended school in Cortland.

Larry married Louise M. (Stephens) Gleason in April 1946. They were married 53 years. She preceded him in 1999.

Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He retired in 1984 from the Bendix Corp. as a machinist after 43 years of dedicated service. He also worked many years ago part time at Mertz's Flying "A" station in Sidney and was a free-lance carpenter and painter.

He was a member of the Sidney American Legion Post and the Sidney V.F.W.

Larry enjoyed bowling and was especially fond of golf. He spent his winter months in Florida to pursue that passion and traveling throughout the country.

Lawrence is survived by his three children, Cynthia Capaccio and son-in-law, Vincent, of Raphine, Va., Lawrence Gleason Jr. of Guilford, and Mary Anne Porter and son-in-law, Michael, of Walworth; five grandchildren, Vincent D. Capaccio and his wife, Lynda, of Harrisonburg, Va., Brian P. Gleason and Aaron S. Gleason, both of Putnam, Conn., April Fairweather of Rochester, and Kevin B. and his wife, Danielle Morris of Owego; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Jeanne D. (Gleason) Buhl of Cortland; and uncle, Quenten H. Pulling of Sidney. Also several loving relatives, friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 29, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Deacon Thomas Pritchard of Hartwick will officiate.

Burial with military honors will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

M. Esther McConnell

CHARLTON — M. Esther (Manzer) McConnell, 81, of Callaghan Boulevard, Charlton, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2002, at the Wesley Health Care Center, Saratoga Springs, of natural causes, after a long illness.

She was born March 10, 1921, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Fischer) Manzer.

She graduated from the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1941.

She was a registered nurse for Ellis Hospital Operating Room. She worked as a registered nurse for Glendale Home in Glenville after Ellis Hospital. She retired in 1965.

She was a member of the Alplaus United Methodist Church in Alplaus.

She transcribed Braille for 30 years in Schenectady.

She married Clifton A. McConnell on Jan. 3, 1942, in Milford, they had been married for 60 years. He predeceased her Jan. 23, 2002.

She is survived by her son, David F. McConnell, of Ballston Spa, and his wife, Linda; daughter, Shirley J. Neander of Saratoga Springs and her husband, Frank; and three grandchildren, Patrick Neander, Laura Neander and Maggie Neander.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Burial will be held Saturday, April 27, 2002, in the Milford Cemetery in Milford, at 9:30 a.m.

A memorial service will be held for Esther and her husband of 60 years, Clifton A. McConnell, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Alplaus United Methodist Church, Brookside Avenue, Alplaus, NY 12008.

Contributions may be made to the National Braille Association, 3 Townline Circle, Rochester, NY or to the Alplaus United Methodist Church, Brookside Avenue, Alplaus NY 12008.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, Inc., 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, NY 12302.

Gaius E. Shew

DEPOSIT — Gaius E. Shew, 72, of North Sanford Road, Deposit, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Mary Imogene Basset Hospital in Cooperstown.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian M. Shew, of Deposit; a daughter, Kathy Jane Daniels of Cooperstown; two sons, Paul Justin Shew of Rochester and Timothy James Shew of Deposit; a sister, Wilma Baldwin of Deposit; three brothers, Chester Shew of Fleischmanns, Leo Shew of Deposit and Allen Shew of Masonville; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He had retired after 40 years with the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

He was a member of the North Sanford First United Methodist Church and had served on its board of trustees. He was also a member of Sidney Lodge No. 1529 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the North Sanford First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Horbert and the Rev. Jack Klosheim officiating. Interment will be in the Anthony Cemetery at North Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make memorial donations to the Children's Home of the Wyoming Conference or to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are through the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit.

Sherrie Randall

ROCHESTER — Sherrie (DuMond) Randall, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2002, after a long illness.

She was a loving daughter and mother.

Sherrie was a longtime guidance counselor in Pittsford, and a graduate of Unadilla High School, Connecticut College and the University of North Carolina.

She is survived by her mother, Bonnie Jean DuMond, of Unadilla; daughter, Elizabeth W. Randall of New York City; son, John H. Randall of Rochester; brother, Brian V. (Janet) DuMond Jr.; sister, Mary Lou Grant; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Bill Lauderbach.

Friends may call Saturday, April 27, 2002, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Anthony Funeral Chapel Inc., 2305 Monroe Ave., Rochester.

Services will be held at a future date to be announced. Inurnment will be private.

Michelle Campbell

DILLWYN, Va. — Michelle Marie Campbell, 27, of Dillwyn, Va., passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, March 25, 2002.

She was a native of Newark Valley, N.Y., and was employed by Buckingham County Schools as a third-grade teacher at Gold Hill Elementary School.

She is survived by her father and mother, Verne L. and Marie D. Campbell, of Smith Mountain Lake; her brother, John Patrick Campbell and fiancee, Susan McAlexander; and daughter, Chelsea Martin of Rocky Mount. She is also survived by her grandmothers, Dorothy Weeks and Marjorie Campbell.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 11 a.m., at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, with Mark Deweese officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday, March 27, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gold Hill Elementary School, care of Dr. James C. Dumminger, Route 1, Box 173-A, New Canton, Va. 23123.

Ruth D. Hall

WALTON — Ruth D. Hall, a longtime Walton resident, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in  Johnson City. She was 90 years old.

She was born June 10, 1911, in Brooklyn, to Ernest and Emily Day.

She was a production worker at Bendix in Sidney, and she attended Plymouth Church in Walton.

Ruth Hall is survived by a son, Ronald (Linda) Hall; a daughter, Shirley Bowker and longtime friend, Paul Rodgers, all of Walton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets in Walton, where friends may call Monday, April 29, 2002, from 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Bokel officiating and burial in the Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Emergency Squad, 61 West St., Walton, NY 13856, would be appreciated.

Orlando G. Misner

ONEONTA — Orlando Giles Misner, 88 years, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Shandaken, the son of Wilbur and Carrie (Knight) Misner.

Orlando worked on farms from the age 14 to 22 in the Prattsville area. From 1951-58 he was a laborer for Neilson Construction. He has also worked for Lanes out of Meridon, Conn., doing road construction and worked with the dynamite gang helping make the Route 20 Bypass of Cherry Valley and help build the Massachusetts Turnpike. For 17 years he worked at Laskaris Restaurant in Oneonta retiring in 1965.

He was a member of the River Street Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, worked as the maintenance man and all-around handy man for many years.

In 1982, Orlando was inducted into the New Berlin Horseshoe Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his brother, James Misner, of California; two nieces, Betty Misner of East Meredith and Patricia Misner of California; three aunts, Helen Swan, Florence Whipple and Josephine; and several great-nieces and nephews and their families.

Orlando was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Marshall Misner; a niece, Robin Misner; and a longtime friend, Lila Galbreth.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Shandaken Cemetery, Shandaken.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Memorial Fund at the River Street Baptist Church, 133 River St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Orlando G. Misner.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Harold B. Gilbert

ROCKDALE — Harold B. Gilbert, 83, of Rockdale, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Unadilla at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Allen Presby, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, May 1, 2002, the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Wesley W. Carvill Sr.

ONEONTA — Wesley W. Carvill Sr., 91, of Oneonta, Otsego County, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a long illness.

He was the husband of Rosewitha Marshall Turner Carvill and the late Ivinetta Oliver Carvill.

Born and educated in Schenectady, he was the son of the late George R. and Angelina Warner Carvill. A graduate of the former Milne School, Albany, he resided in Latham from 1919 until moving to Oneonta in 1969.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Carvill served in the Army Air Corps in Europe.

He was employed at National Commercial Bank & Trust, which later became Key Bank, for 46 years, and at the time of his retirement in 1975, he was a vice president in charge of the Oneonta branch, where he had been for six years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta; the Oneonta American Legion Post #259; and the Oneonta Country Club. A former member of the Newtonville United Methodist Church; he was also a member of several Albany Masonic Bodies, including the Mount Vernon Lodge, Scottish Rite and Cyprus Temple.

Besides his wife; he is survived by a son, Wesley W. Carvill Jr., Londonderry, N.H.; a sister, Della Winter, Decatur, Ill.; a brother, Gordon Carvill, East Greenbush; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by a son, Raymond R. Carvill; two sisters, Beatrice Willey and Ruth Lobdell; and a brother, C. Raymond Carvill.

A memorial service will be held at a later date, under the direction of the Bowen Funeral Home, Latham.

There will be no calling hours.

Jeffrey L. Westcott

DAVENPORT CENTER — Jeffrey L. Westcott, 40 years, of Davenport Center, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 24, 1961, in Oneonta, the son of Thomas L. and June (Blanchard) Westcott.

He married Carla Buzie on Aug. 16, 1997, in Davenport.

Jeff was the plant manager at BK Associates International in Oneonta.

He was a member of the East Meredith Fire Department; an avid NASCAR fan; and a bowler on the Delhi Merchantile League.

Jeff was a loving husband, father, son and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Carla, of Davenport Center; his daughter, Brittany Westcott of Oneonta; his mother, June Porteus of Oneonta; his stepson, Nathan Hults of Davenport Center; his mother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and many, many friends.

Jeff was predeceased by his father on Feb. 9, 1989.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, from 6 to 9 p.m. for those who may wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the East Meredith Fire Department, East Meredith, NY 13757, or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Jeffrey L. Westcott.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary Grant

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A Mass of Christian burial for Mary Alice Potter Grant, 76, of Gainesville, Fla., and formerly of Toddsville, N.Y., who died March 4, 2002, will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, N.Y., with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. The committal service and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy C. Gage

CANAJOHARIE — Dorothy C. Gage, 78, passed away quietly in her sleep on April 27, 2002, at the Folts Home in Herkimer.

She was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Decatur, the daughter of Lorenzo and Cora (Coger) Clapper.

She married her sweetheart, Raymond Gage, Aug. 9, 1942, in Cherry Valley. They raised six daughters while sharing 59 loving years together.

Dorothy was employed by Beech-Nut Inc. from 1961 until her retirement in 1984.

Loving God's word, she was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 29 years.

She also enjoyed family gatherings, camping, bowling, gardening and canning.

Besides her husband, Raymond Gage, of Canajoharie; her surviving loved ones include Gloria Gage of Palatine Bridge, Janice and Dwight Pickrell, Deanna and Harry Morey and Ramona Brown of Canajoharie, Linda and Steve Brownell of New Berlin, Debra and Keith Suits of Fort Plain; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Gordon Clapper of Altamont, David Clapper of Oxford, Ala., Claude Clapper of Canajoharie, Clark Clapper of Springfield Center, and Ray George Clapper of Amsterdam; and two sisters, Alta Herrington of Schenevus and Jean Handy of East Worcester.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Golda Mae Coffin and Mildred Gage.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at 6 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Palatine Bridge, with Jake Crewell of Fort Plain officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy's memory may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Palatine Bridge, NY or the Folts Home, Herkimer, NY.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
