Mildred L. Sprague

NEW BERLIN — Mildred Lucella Sprague, 90 years, of New Berlin, passed away April 29, 2002, in New Berlin.

She was born June 30, 1911, in the town of Columbus, the daughter of Thaddeus and Ethel (Spurr) Chase.

She married Laurence R. Sprague on Jan. 19, 1928, in Franklin. He predeceased her Feb. 28, 1985.

She spent her childhood in the Columbus and New Berlin areas.

She attended Parks School and graduated from New Berlin Central School.

She worked at the egg processing plant and the high school cafeteria in New Berlin. During World War II. she worked at Scintilla in Sidney. In 1956, she became a family care provider until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin; and a member of the May Flower Society.

She will be remembered for her creative and artistic abilities as well as her love of her family and friends.

She is survived by five daughters, Robert and Joyce Spencer, DeLand, Fla., Barry and Winifred Barnett, Kaufman,  Texas, Bud and Marian Pylinski, Richmond, Va., Janet Davis, Astor, Fla., and Mark and Debbie Hine, Norwich; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Sidney and Roland Chase; and two sisters, Doris Carter and Eleanor Dye.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be in the Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin, N.Y., or the charity of one's choice.

Gladys Osterhout

CHERRY VALLEY — A graveside committal service for Gladys W. Osterhout, age 90, who passed away on Dec. 21, 2001, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2002, in Cherry Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Alvin Burnworth, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, officiating.

All relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Roy K. Bartlett

NEW LISBON — Roy K. Bartlett, 95, died at his home in New Lisbon, on the morning of Monday, April 22, 2002, with his friends at his bedside.

He was born in Clayville on July, 19, 1906, to Charles and Emma (Keeler) Bartlett, the youngest of five sons.

After graduating from high school in Clayville, he attended Mechanics Institute (now R.P.I.) in Rochester and graduated from there in 1929.

Shortly thereafter he was employed by J.L. Miller, manager of Manor House Farm, for 40 years.

Upon retiring, he moved to his home "Drumsticks" in New Lisbon, where he conducted craft classes until this past year. He was a charter member of the Butternut Valley Arts & Craft Center. Roy taught many classes there as well as adult education classes in area schools. His specialties were stenciling, country paintings and graining, but he was always receptive to new ideas and near the end of his life found great enjoyment in creating flowers from nut shells and lunaria petals.

Many of his arrangements were given to friends and visitors. He has been a driving force behind the arts and crafts of the area as well as the resurgence of interest in Victoriana. He was proud of his ability to create objects of beauty from "throw-aways" and gave freely of his ideas to interested groups, especially to garden clubs.

He was an honorary member of the Butternut Valley Garden Club and a longtime active member of the Morris United Methodist Church.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Charles Bartlett and family of Lebanon, Ky., Robert Bartlett and family, and Jamie Magruder and family, both of "Ringwood Farms" of Springfield Center.

A memorial service will be held at the Morris United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tom  Taylor officiating.

It was Roy's request that his body be given to medical science.

Memorial gifts in Roy's name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or Morris Methodist Church, Morris, NY 13808.

Sophia (Sophie) Terrell

WORCESTER — Sophia (Sophie) Terrell, 92, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a short illness.

She was born Feb. 18, 1910, in Dietz, Wyo., the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Hribar) Koker Sr.

She moved to Worcester with her family in 1920. In spite of having polio at the age of 6, she attended one-room schools and completed the standard course in home hygiene and care of the sick. She cared for many sick people in the area, before her marriage to Orville LeRoy Terrell in Worcester on July 4, 1936.

Most of her life she lived on a small dairy farm which she purchased in 1933, and assisted in the daily operations until 1966. Mrs. Terrell also worked in the glove shops in Schenevus, raised flowers to sell, made quilts and attended the Fox Creek Flea Market.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, and the Altar Rosary Society, for which at one time she was the corresponding secretary.

Mrs. Terrell is predeceased by her husband, Orville LeRoy Terrell, on May 13, 1985; a daughter, Anna (Terrell) Melvin on April 8, 1959; and all her brothers and sisters, Fannie, Joseph Jr., Mary Baker, Gregor, Sylvester, Stephen and Anton Koker.

Survivors include her children, Christopher and wife, Janet, Terrell of Worcester, Lloyd and wife, Carolyn, Terrell of Delanson, Helen and husband, F. William, Rudd of Syracuse, and Agnes Terrell of Worcester; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be at 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will at 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Jeffrey L'Arch as celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Terrell to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester, St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church in Summit or the Worcester Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Paul A. Spaziani

ONEONTA — Paul A. Spaziani, 69, of Oneonta, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 21, 2002, at his residence.

He was born April 1, 1933, in Oneonta, the son of Paolo and Julia (Stirpe) Spaziani.

Paul served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1996, he retired after 20 years of employment from Hartwick College, where he was the equipment manager in the physical education department. Before that, he served on the City of Oneonta Police Department for 13 years. Currently he worked as a courier for Wilber National Bank.

A lifelong area resident, he was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Paul was an avid sportsman, and especially enjoyed baseball, racket ball and golf. For many years he coached American Legion baseball. He also auditioned for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Dr. Eric and Jayne Spaziani of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Angela and Robert Sisson of Ballston Spa, Cathleen and John Treen of Frankfurt, and Wendy and George Tockey of Benbrook,  Texas; 16 grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Madeline Santos of Oneonta, and Connie and Al Bassani of Oneonta. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Spaziani; and two brothers and two sisters, Angelo and Alex Spaziani and Mary Sweeney and Jennie Gasbara.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Godwin Nnamani, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert J. (Tex) Downey

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — Robert J. (Tex) Downey, 78, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his home in Little River, S.C.

Mr. Downey was born on July 31, 1923, in Pottsville, Pa., the son of Anthony J. and Barbara Kliebenstein Downey.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Miller Downey; two sons, Robert A. Downey and his wife, Mary, of Albany, N.Y., and Michael S. Downey and his wife, Genny, of Bothell, Wash.; a daughter, Lynn Hunt of Little River, S.C.; two brothers, Anthony Downey of Pottsville, Pa., and Richard Downey of Temple, Pa.; and eight grandchildren, Stephen, Jason, Ashley, Christopher, Melissa, Michael, Kelly and Ryan.

Mr. Downey served 23 years in the Army, from 1942 to 1964, and retired at the rank of major. During World War II, he served in the 3rd Armored Division, 703rd Tank Destroyer Battalion with Gen. Patton. His unit fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was with Gen. MacArthur's Honor Guard in Tokyo, Japan, from 1949 to 1952. Maj. Downey served in Korea and was adviser to the New York National Guard.

After retiring from the service, he worked in the heating oil business for Oneonta Oil & Fuel in Oneonta, N.Y. He was promoted to president of the company in 1980, and worked until retiring in the late 1980s.

He and his wife later moved to Little River, S.C., in 1995.

Maj. Downey will be interred in the Indiantown Gap Military Cemetery in  Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 818 Jordan Ave., North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Arlene Louise McClenon

WALTON — Arlene Louise McClenon, 67, of Walton, had owned and operated her dairy farm on McCall Hill for most of her life.

Ms. McClenon died Monday, April 22, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital.

She was born in Walton on Sept. 23, 1934, the daughter of Bruce and Freda (Beecher) McClenon.

She worked for the ASCS for 111/2 years. Arlene enjoyed dairy farming and after buying her farm on McCall Hill, she won many dairy awards, including the Progressive Breeders Award in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

She enjoyed showing cattle at the Delaware County Fair.

Arlene was a director on the board of the Walton Cooperative Fire Insurance Co.

She was a member of the Happy Dairy 4-H Club as a child.

Arlene was a special lady who will be deeply missed by many, including friends, family and her beloved animals.

Surviving are her father, Bruce, of Walton; her brother, Donald McClenon and wife, Connie, of Walton; sister, Janet Hoyt and husband, Norm, of Bovina Center; nephews, Edward McClenon and wife, Ann, Andrew McClenon and friend, Malissa, Casey McClenon and fiancee Stacey, Thomas Hoyt and wife, Norma; nieces, Kami McClenon, Ashley McClenon, Lorriane Francisco and husband, Brian, Penny Hamilton and husband, Roger; and great-nephews and -nieces, Miranda, Chelsey and Jordan Hoyt, Devin Hamilton, Joseph and Jade McClenon.

Her mother, Freda, predeceased her on March 28, 2000.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Clark & Winter Funeral Home in Walton, with Bert More officiating. Burial following in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society in the name of Arlene L. McClenon are appreciated.

Viola L. Hunt

SIDNEY — Viola Lucy Hunt, 85, of Sidney, passed away Monday, April 22, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

She was born April 8, 1917, the daughter of the late Arthur and Katherine Eckenberg Kleinau in Brooklyn.

Viola married William H. Hunt on Sept. 30, 1933, in Brooklyn. He predeceased her on Oct. 3, 1966.

She was employed as the housekeeper for Sacred Heart Church Rectory for 16 years.

Mrs. Hunt was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sidney.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, William A. Hunt Sr., Sidney, and Robert H. and Betty Hunt, Sidney; grandchildren, Joanne Hunt and Ruben Dorta, Miami, Fla., William A. Hunt Jr., Miami, Fla., Charles and Sherry Place, Oneonta, Steven and Becky Place, Bainbridge, John and Cheryl Place, Deposit; seven great-grandchildren; one niece, Grace and James Brugaletta, Selden, Long Island; and two grandnieces.

She was also predeceased by brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Betty Kleinau.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 26, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. on Friday, the family will be attendance at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sidney.

Arrangements are under the directions of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Marion W. Ritter

CAPE CARTERET, N.C. — Marion W. Ritter, 93, of Cape Carteret, N.C., died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at home.

Marion lived in Oneonta, N.Y., for 14 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Lewis, Cape Carteret, N.C.; brother, Carl Wiedmann, Manasquan, N.J.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Herbert.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Continuum Home Care and Hospice, 3391 Henderson Drive, Jacksonville, N.C. 28546.

A private service will be held.

ONEONTA — A memorial Mass for Viola (Dolly) Bridger, who died April 19, 2002, in Oneonta, will he held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at St. Mary's Church on Walnut Street in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, as celebrant, and the Rev. Godwin as concelebrate.

Dolly was the mother of Jo-Ann LaMonica and Carol Bagnardi; and the wife of Albert "Bud" Bridger.

A reception will follow at St. Mary's Parish Center (the former St. Mary's School), across the street from the church. All are welcome.

WESTFORD — The committal service for Lola Lee Schrom, 49, who passed away Jan. 29, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Westford Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Burke officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Irene K. Bresee

BURLINGTON FLATS — Committal services and burial for Mrs. Irene K. Bresee, 80, of Burlington Flats, who died April 5, 2002, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2002, in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
