John J. Morlano

SIDNEY — John J. Morlano, 76, of Sidney, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Cooperstown, N.Y., where he received excellent and compassionate care from all doctors and nurses.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1926, in Jersey City, N.J., son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Falzarano) Morlano.

At the age of 1, his family moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. He attended East New York Vocational High School where he trained to be a machinist.

John married Evelyn Frazier on July 8, 1945, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Brooklyn. On Jan. 1, 1944, at the age of 17, he volunteered to serve in the United States Navy and he was given duty on the destroyer USS McCall DD 4000. He served on the McCall as 3rd-class machinist mate, until his honorable discharge on March 20, 1946.

John and Evelyn relocated to upstate New York in 1947 and John held various positions until his employment at Bendix in February 1952. There he worked as a machinist for 31 years until his retirement as a supervisor on Jan. 1, 1983.

He truly enjoyed music, and for many years John sang and played guitar with a folk group during Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion Post 187 in Sidney and Sidney Elks Club 2175.

John is survived by his wife; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Donna and Harvey Fink of Taylorsville, N.C., Barbara and Douglas Bush Sr. of West Oneonta, Deborah Morlano of Sidney and Renee and Bruce Teale of Sidney Center; nine grandchildren John Fink and wife, Holly, Kim Bumgarner and husband, Eric, Douglas Bush Jr. and wife, Michele, Dan Bush and his wife, Kim, James Cannon, Charles Cannon, Melissa Morlano, Nathan Teale and Deanna Teale; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Carol Taglianetti of Brooklyn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by a brother, James Morlano, and two sisters, Sue Pisello and Florence Genna.

A Mass of Christian burial will offered Monday, April 29, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney. The Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, will officiate.

At John's request, there will be no visitation.

Burial, with military honors, will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, One Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Harry O. Hillis

STAMFORD — Harry O. Hillis, 85, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford, N.Y.

He was born April 7, 1917, in South Kortright, N.Y., the son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Hoagland) Hillis.

He married the late Ruth E.  Jackson Dec. 2, 1939, in Roxbury, NY. She passed away Jan. 12, 1995.

Harry graduated from Hobart High School. In 1936 he graduated from the State University College of Technology at Delhi with a major in animal husbandry. His employment was in carpentry and as a milk tester working at area farms, and GLF. He retired from Catskill Craftsmen in 1983.

Mr. Hillis was a 50-year member of the Stamford United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years. He was a charter member and secretary of the West Branch Rod and Gun Club and member and secretary of the Bloomville Senior Citizens.

He enjoyed his grandchildren and their activities and fishing and reading.

He is survived by his children, Roderick and Margaret Hillis of Hobart, Lawrence and Merrill Hillis of Hobart, Janet Hillis and Bill Tuttle of Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y., and Audrey Hillis of Grand Gorge; a sister, Esther Ackerly, of Charlotteville; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, April 29, at 9 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y., with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, April 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Roses Brook, South Kortright, N.Y.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Bloomville Senior Meals or Robinson Terrace Recreation Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Kathleen K. Donavan

BERRY CREEK,  Calif. — Kathleen Kelsey Donavan, 53, went to the with our Lord on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Oroville,  Calif.

She was born Oct. 8, 1948, in Oneonta, to Cecil E. Kelsey and Marie Ernestine (Lambert) Tubbs.

She had resided in California for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Berry Creek Grange during these years. She enjoyed and was the cook for the monthly breakfasts and dinners. She had worked as a hairdresser as well a bartender and restaurant cook for the Sugar Pine Saloon and Grill.

She is survived by her mother, Marie Tubbs of Maryland, N.Y., brothers John Lambert of North Carolina, Eugene Kelsey of North Carolina, Deforest Wellman of Hamden, James Wellman of Cherry Valley, Owen Wellman of Maryland, George Wellman of North Carolina, Richard Wellman of Maryland, Neal Wellman of North Carolina; sisters, Ramona Adolfsen of Oneonta, Sandra Hoag of Guilford, Delma Wellman of Oneonta, Lucila Pendleton of Cherry Valley, Alice Balogh of  South Carolina; her companion, Richard Kent Shores, of Berry Creek,  Calif.; one uncle, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many, many California friends.

Cremation was handled by the Scheer Memorial Chapel of Oroville,  Calif.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Kathleen's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, your grange or favorite charity.

A memorial service to celebrate Kathleen's life will be held later at the convenience of the family.

John E. Swanteson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — John E. Swanteson, 76, of county Route 25, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon April 25, 2002, in Saint Luke's Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford.

He was born on May 22, 1925, in Brooklyn, son of the late John and Johanna Jurgeson Swanteson. John was raised and educated in Smyrna, N.Y.

During World War II he proudly served with the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946.

He was married to the former Daisy Cole. She preceded him in death on Jan. 19, 1989.

A Richfield Springs resident since 1959, he and his wife moved there from Norwich. They owned and operated a dairy farm in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1979.

John was a friend to many and will always be remembered as caring, hard-working and humble person.

Surviving him are one son, John H., and his wife, Diane, Swanteson of Richfield Springs; a sister, Winnie Clark of Sherburne; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Twilight Rest Cemetery, Monticello.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Central New York Chapter, Learbury Centre, 401 North Salina St., Syracuse, NY 13203.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Gladys Rosher

LAURENS — Gladys Annette Rosher, 84, of Laurens, N.Y., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Gilmour Nursing Home, Norwich, N.Y.

She was born April 23, 1918, in North Franklin, N.Y., the daughter of Raymond and Millie (Fagan) Knapp.

Gladys was first married to Kenneth P. Crosby. Her second marriage was to Frank Rosher.

Gladys had worked for 20 years for Scintilla in Sidney, N.Y., as a coil winder. She lived in Stamford, Schenectady, Sarasota, Fla., and Laurens during her life. She was a member of the retired Aerospace Workers Union.

She is survived by three sons and two daughter-in-laws, Howard and Mary Crosby of Milford Center, Kenneth and Virginia Crosby of Laurens, and Wayne Crosby of New Berlin; two brothers, Oren "Doc" Knapp of Oneonta, and Wilfred "Spike" Knapp of Alabama, one sister, Mrs. James (Mary Ann) McNulty of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, from the Elm Row Cemetery, Laurens. The Rev. William Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Schenevus, N.Y., will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Barbara Zigon Holt

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Mrs. Barbara Zigon Holt, 66, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Friday, April 26, 2002, in Fort Lauderdale.

She was born in New York City, a daughter of the late Joseph Anthony and Emma Love (Udovich) Zigon.

Barbara is survived by her husband, John, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three sons, Michael Holt and his wife, Ruth, of Walden, N.Y., John Holt and his wife, Barbara, of Tampa, Fla., and Mark V. Holt of New York City; one daughter, Laura Holt of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Aufmuth, of Fly Creek.

She was predeceased by one son, Joseph Holt.

Ellis Sanborn

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Ellis Sanborn, 83, of Orange Park, Fla., and formerly of the Cooperstown and Utica areas, died Wednesday afternoon, April 24, 2002, at St. Vincents Medical Center in Jacksonville.

A Masonic graveside service conducted by Brothers of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons, Cooperstown, will be held in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery on a day to be announced in August of 2002.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Helen O. Oliver

ONEONTA — A graveside service for Helen O. Oliver, who passed away Dec. 15, 2001, at The Meadows Nursing Home, will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Her daughters will be in attendance.

Hazel L. Kingsley

BLOOMVILLE— Graveside services for Hazel L. Kingsley, who died Nov. 1, 2001, at the Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, will be held on Monday, April 29, at 11 a.m., at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Arrangements are by Mevec Funeral Home, Ballston Spa.

Bruce D. Kellner

COOPERSTOWN — Bruce Dana Kellner, 64, of Cooperstown, died peacefully with his family at his side on Friday, April 26, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a short illness.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1937, in Buffalo, the son of Ruth Dana Kellner and George Louis Kellner.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marolyn (Kelly) Kellner; a son, Peter H.D. Kellner of Telluride,  Colo.; a daughter, Christianne Dana Kellner, her husband, Ronald Hitzelberger, and granddaughter, Jayden Mae Hitzelberger, all of Greenwood, S.C.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Richard Miller of Tucson, Ariz.

Bruce was a kind-hearted and fun-loving man whose quiet presence will be sorely missed by his family and friends

Bruce was raised in Kenmore, where he attended the Kenmore schools and graduated from Kenmore High School in 1955. He received his bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University in 1959, a master's degree in automotive engineering from Chrysler Institute in 1961, and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1966.

After college, Bruce was employed by Linde Corp., Corning Glass Works and Honeywell.

In 1974, he opened NAPA Auto Parts in Cooperstown, which later included Radio Shack. He owned and operated this business until its sale in 1998.

Since his retirement, he has taught skiing at Windham Mountain, taught sports car racing at the Skip Barber Racing School in Lime Rock, Conn., and worked at Maho Bay Campgrounds, St. John, U.S.V.I.

He was a lover of nature, enjoyed skiing, riding his motorcycle, hiking, swimming and especially enjoyed the time he spent with family and friends on the island of St. John as recently as last month.

Bruce was involved with sports car racing throughout his life. He successfully campaigned his Triumph TR-4 into first place wins in the Northeast and, as a result, in 1962, he was invited to compete at Sebring as a part of the Triumph Factory Racing Team.

Bruce was a member of the Cooperstown Rotary Club, the Sports Car Club of America, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Cooperstown Country Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club.

A memorial service to celebrate Bruce's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Cooperstown, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road., Cooperstown, NY 13326 to support the Mobile Community Health Screening Van.

Funeral arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

George Sinstack

ONEONTA — George Sinstack, 78, of Oneonta passed away at home on Friday, April 26, 2002.

He was born in Oneonta on March 23, 1924, the son of Fred and Edith (Butts) Sinstack.

In 1946, he married Marilyn J. McClaughry of Greenwich. She survives.

He attended the Oneonta schools and graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1950.

He served in the U.S. Army Engineering Corp. during World War II, in France, Belgium, Okinawa and Korea. He was honorably discharged Jan. 4, 1946, as a corporal.

George was employed by the D&H Railroad in the Round House and the shops. He was also employed for 25 years with the New York State Department of Transportation as a construction engineer. Most recently he was a courier for Wilber National Bank.

George was a member of the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Oneonta.

He was a former member of the Klipnockie Beagle Club. He was an avid follower of harness racing, an avid gardener and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, at home; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Penny Sinstack of Oneonta; his daughter and son-in-law, JoDee and Paul Kogut of Hamilton; his mother, Edith Cooley of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Nicholas and Caitlin Sinstack of Oneonta, Lisa and her husband, Daniel, Mitchell, and Karen Kogut; great-grandchildren, Jacqueline, Nathan and Lauryn Mitchell; his brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Chris Sinstack of Oneonta; his sister, Lois Judd of Oneonta; two nephews and their wives, David and Grace Sinstack and Stephen and Vicki Judd; one niece, Bonnie Robinson, all of Oneonta; and five great-nephews, Samuel Judd, James Sinstack, Rick Robinson, Jeff and Eric Sinstack.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlson officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 or to the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave., Syracuse, NY 13206 in loving memory of George Sinstack.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Sherman Benjamin

DELHI — Sherman D. "Ben" Benjamin, 92, of Elk Creek, Delhi, passed away Friday night, April 26, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

The son of Sherman D. and Mina (Barth) Benjamin, he was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Albany, enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was a teen-ager, and married Dora (Kathmann) Fuller in 1954.

A heavy-equipment operator during the construction of the Pepacton Reservoir and, subsequently, a bulk milk transport truck driver until retirement, Ben was also an avid hunter and fisherman, booked and organized big-game hunting trips to Alaska, enjoyed traveling and camping, and bred Siberian Husky dogs.

Formerly of the Hudson Valley, Ben later lived in Fonda for 31 years, moving to Delhi in 1990.

Surviving are his wife, Dora K. Benjamin; 13 children, Pierette Commineaux, Nancy Jo Taylor, Patricia Svegl, Naomi, Cletus, Lathan, Sherman III "Danny," Wayne, Roger, Jay, Benson, Kendall and Craig Benjamin; three stepchildren, Grace Dietzman, Stanley and David Fuller; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; a sister, Agatha Taylor; and two nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Joseph; and brother, Cletus.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. John E. Priest at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Memorial contributions to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Charles D. Lehmer

NORWICH — Charles Dehn Lehmer, 88, formerly of Norwich, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 27, 2002.

He had been a resident at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, since 1999.

He was born in Lynhurst, N.J., on Dec. 20, 1913, the son of Fred and Dorothy (Dehn) Lehmer.

He was married to Maude M. Church in 1932. She died in 1981.

He had worked as a plater at the Curtis Wright Co. and had also worked as a maintenance and watchman for the Chenango Memorial Hospital for several years.

He was a resident of Chenango County since 1972, and had formerly lived in Wayne, N.J.

He was a faithful Christian, true friend and a loving father.

A son, David Lehmer; three daughters, Maude Zoon, Charlotte Jimenez and Grace King, survive him, along with several grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside memorial services will be held in the Eastside Cemetery in Afton at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Dennis O'Neill officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Dennis O'Neill Outreach Ministries, 116 Ridge Rd., Rutherford, N.J., 07070-2424 in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
