J. Lewis DuMond

COBLESKILL — J. Lewis DuMond, a Cobleskill business leader for decades, died of pneumonia Friday, May 3, 2002, in Cleveland, Ohio, with his family by his side.

Mr. DuMond was born in Walton, Delaware County, in 1909, the only son of Charles G. and Alice Dann DuMond.

He graduated from Walton High School in 1927. He lived most of his life in Cobleskill, until suffering a stroke in January, when he moved to Cleveland to be near his daughter.

Mr. DuMond met his wife, Mary Porter, in 1928 at Syracuse University, where both were students. After an unusually long courtship, the two wed in 1939, and set up housekeeping in Cobleskill. Their marriage lasted nearly 60 years until Mrs. DuMond's death in 1998. During her last seven years, he served as her caregiver, showing a patience and tenderness that impressed everyone who knew him.

After graduation from Syracuse, Mr. DuMond began his apprenticeship in the insurance business, a field that had interested him since boyhood.

He worked for several years at the Sterling Insurance Co. before buying his own agency in 1935. Though he retired in 1976, the business still carries on as the Donna LaVigne Agency on Main Street. Mr. DuMond's association with the Sterling continued, as he served on the company's board of directors from the 1930s until his death.

He also became active in the New York State Independent Mutual Agents' Association (now PIA), serving for many years as its secretary, and as president in 1964-66.

Mr. DuMond was also devoted to the stewardship of Pine Grove Farm in Northfield, Delaware County, a property that came into the family in 1913, and that became one of the first reforestation projects in New York state. A longtime member of the New York State Forest Owners' Association, he won that organization's Outstanding Tree Farmer award in 1989.

He was a loyal member of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, active in the Cheerio group, choir and various committees responsible for church management.

One of his proudest achievements at church was his participation in a project to rebuild the organ some 30 years ago. A musical man, he was stirred by the power and dignity of the organ in worship and took joy in

helping to bring that beauty to others.

History — especially regional and family history — held a lifelong fascination for Mr. DuMond. He belonged to and supported the historical societies of Cobleskill, Schoharie County and Delaware County, as well as the Huguenot Society and the Dutch Settlers. He and Mrs. DuMond for many years hosted the DuMond family reunion at Pine Grove Farm.

Mr. DuMond found fellowship and service in a number of other organizations through the years, among them Rotary, the Schoharie County Farm Bureau, the Monday Night Club, Masons and Delta Upsilon fraternity.

He leaves two daughters, Mary Ann Kerr of Cleveland Heights and Diane Keech of Alameda,  Calif.; sons-in-law, Douglas Kerr and Edward Keech; grandchildren, Anne Keech of Chicago, Laura Kerr of East Los Angeles, Daniel Kerr of Cleveland, and soon-to-be granddaughter-in-law, Tatiana Belenkaya, also of Cleveland.

Viewing will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 6, 2002, at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home in Cobleskill. The funeral service at Cobleskill United Methodist Church will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
