Anna Merritt

DELHI — Anna Merritt, 92, of Delhi, died at home Saturday, May 11, 2002.

She was born in New Hartford on Aug. 17, 1909, the daughter of J. Robert and Jessie H. Cruikshank.

She married Sheldon R. Merritt in New Hartford on Aug. 10, 1935. Mr. Merritt died Oct. 21, 1978.

Mrs. Merritt graduated from New Hartford High and from the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, Class of 1931. In 1935, she received the bachelor of library sciences degree from the same college.

She taught English in the public schools of New York state and also was a school librarian.

After her marriage and after moving to Delhi in 1942, she was employed as a library assistant at the Cannon Free Library for 23 years. It was work that she particularly enjoyed.

Mrs. Merritt was a longtime member of the Delhi Presbyterian Church, now the United Ministry of Delhi.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Field and her husband, Jerome Field, of San Francisco,  Calif., and Susan Parker of New York City; one son, Thomas S. Merritt and his wife, Dana Merritt, of Peekskill; three grandchildren in the San Francisco Bay area; and two great-grandchildren in Los Gatos,  Calif.

A memorial service will take be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2002, at United Ministry Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Woodlawn Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Evelyn B. Drake

STAMFORD — Evelyn B. Drake, 69, of Stamford, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born April 6, 1933, in  Jefferson, the daughter of Arthur and Ella (Reed) Wayman.

She married Charles H. Drake on Sept. 5, 1953. He predeceased her May 25, 1984.

Evelyn loved all crafts but especially knitting.

She is survived by three daughters, Jackie Wayman, Walnut,  Calif., Lori Brownell, Grand Gorge, and Joni LeRoy, Monticello; a son, Daniel Drake, Hobart; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Nola Barlow, Caroga Lake, Virginia Conklin, Grand Gorge, Shirley Scott, Grand Gorge, Patricia Van Nortwick, South Kortright, and Wanneta Porter, Stamford; and three brothers, Clayton Wayman, Stamford, Robert Wayman, Ashland, and Richard Wayman, Grand Gorge.

Mrs. Drake was predeceased by a brother, Harry Wayman; a sister, Laura Wayman; and a son, Kim Drake.

Graveside services will take place 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Stamford Emergency Squad, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Brent A. Armitage

DRYDEN — Brent A. Armitage, 36, of Dryden, died at home on Jan. 11, 2002, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Brent was born in Sidney.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service celebrating Brent's life at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2001, at Green Hills Cemetery on Highland Road in the village of Dryden.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.

Lewis Edwin Ough

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Lewis Edwin Ough, age 71, of Lake Street, son of the late J. Edwin and Meryl McRorie Ough, passed away on Monday morning, May 13, 2002, in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, where he was also born on Aug. 14, 1930.

He was a graduate of Springfield Central School, Class of 1947, and the Albany Business College.

Lewis then served with the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged 1953. After his military service he continued his education at Rider University where he graduated in 1956.

On Oct. 19, 1957, he married Marilyn E. Young in Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center.

For more than 10 years, he was an accountant for Wolverine World Wide, Tru-Stitch Footwear Division in Malone, retiring in 1992.

He and his wife, Marilyn, came to Richfield Springs in 1993, and have resided since.

Mr. Ough had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center.

He was a member and past master of Trumansburg Lodge No. 157 Free and Accepted Masons, a member and past patron of Trumansburg Star Chapter No. 479 Order of the Eastern Star, a former member of the National Association of Accountants and in his early years supervised the Little League and the Boy Scouts of America activities.

Surviving, besides his wife of 44 years, Marilyn; are a son, Daniel and his wife, Coral, Ough of Freeville; one daughter, Cynthia and her husband, Stuart, Cunningham of Amesbury, Mass.; a sister, Anne and her husband, Alvah, Stearns of Syracuse; several nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service with Holy Eucharist will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday May 18, 2002, in Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Persis Williams, rector officiating. Interment in Springfield Center Cemetery will follow.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 376, Springfield Center, NY 13468. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Mildred L. Beck

BINGHAMTON — Mildred L. Beck, 93, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Elizabeth Church Manor.

She was predeceased by her parents, Eric and Selma (Benson) Larson; her husband of 56 years, Howard A. Beck, in 1994, who was employed by New York State Electric & Gas Corp.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara B. and Howard Schue, Fairfax Va.; her granddaughters, Sandra S. Risko and husband, John, Manassas Park, Va., Kristen L. Schue and husband, Joshua Barr, of Fayetteville, N.C.; her two great-grandsons, whom she adored, Benjamin and Alexander Risko, Manassas Park, Va.; a brother-in-law, C. Gilbert Beck, Slingerlands; and sister-in-law, Ruth Beck Kelsey of Mount Dora, Fla.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was born in Belvidere, Ill., and moved to Westford as a child.

Mildred graduated from Oneonta Normal School in 1930, and taught first grade for eight years in Waterville, where she met and married her husband, Howard, in 1938.

As NYSEG moved the family to Walton, Liberty and Binghamton, she worked as a substitute teacher in those locations as well. The Becks also lived in Norwich and Oneonta.

She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and the Monday Afternoon Club of Binghamton.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 83 Main St., Binghamton. The Rev. Stephen R. Heiss will officiate.

Burial will be private at Vestal Hills Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends in the church narthex from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Louise Manor and Elizabeth Church Manor, 863 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13903.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the caretakers, staff and friends from St. Louise Manor and Elizabeth Church Manor for their compassionate and loving care of Mildred during these last months.

Arrangements are by the Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home Inc., 71 Main St., Binghamton.

Janet M. Turner

STAMFORD — Janet M. Turner, 103, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Mrs. Turner was a lifelong resident of Farmingdale, who relocated to Stamford seven years ago to live with her son, Billy.

Janet was born in New Brunswick, Canada, on Jan. 18, 1899, the daughter of James  Taylor and Janet Duncan.

She was married to John B. Turner on Nov. 1, 1918, in Farmingdale. He predeceased her in 1969.

She worked for many years as a cook in nursing homes on Long Island.

She was a member of Hope Restoration Church in Windham.

Janet was the mother of four; son, John, and daughter, Ruth, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her two sons, Harold Turner of Lake Wales, Fla., and William Turner of  Jefferson; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Arthur F.  White Funeral Home, Inc., Farmingdale, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, with the Rev. Cliff Cool officiating.

Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Lorena F. Shaw

ONEONTA — A graveside service will be held for Lorena F. Shaw, who died Dec. 20, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Salenda C. Bush

DeLANCEY — Graveside services for Salenda C. Bush, who died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Hamden Cemetery, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

John P. Clune

ONEONTA — Friends are invited to attend a graveside committal service for John P. Clune, who died on March 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Millard E. Gage

OTEGO — Millard E. Gage, 71 years, of Otego, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, Fla.

He was born April 2, 1931, in Delanson, the son of Clifford H. and Catherine M. (Barber) Gage.

Millard graduated from R.P.I., Troy, with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He married Maureen Tripp on June 29, 1952, at the Baptist Church in Walton.

Millard worked for Allied Engine Components Division in Sidney, retiring in 1983. He had also worked at Simmonds in Norwich for two years.

Millard was the former mayor of Otego; a past member and past president of the Otego Rotary Club; past exalted ruler of Sidney Elk's Lodge Post No. 2175; past member of the Otego Fire Department; a member of the Otego Baptist Church; and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Englewood, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen H. Gage, of Otego; five children and their spouses, Cynthia and Joe Keyser of Stamford, Deborah and Theodore Dlugosz of Rome, Douglas and Patricia Gage of Davenport, Iowa, Donald and Michele Gage of Salem, Conn., and Donna and Gary Conrade of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Matthew and Rebekah Keyser, Elizabeth and Jennifer Dlugosz, Kimberlee and Kristina Gage, Kathryn and Daniel Gage, and Amanda and Scott Conrade; one sister and her husband, Martha and Norman Rask of Columbus, Ohio; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Millard was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Guyder, of Delanson.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Otego Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Truax officiating.

Burial will follow at the Walton Cemetery, Walton.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2002, for those who wish may call.

It has been requested, that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 S. Lake Ave., Albany, NY 12208 in loving memory of Millard E. Gage.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.
