Howard S. Byam

COLONIE — Howard S. Byam, 89, of Colonie, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Albany Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born and educated in Oneonta, and has resided in Colonie for more than 65 years.

Mr. Byam had worked as a machinist at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady for 35 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a longtime active member of Lisha's Kill Reformed Church and a member of the Lisha Kill Seniors.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beulah Briggs Byam. He is the beloved father of Carol L. Rice and her husband, William, of Niskayuna, Joan K. Byam of Guilderland and Diane R. McConnelee and her husband, Paul, of Rotterdam. He was brother of Walter Byam of Syracuse and Dorothy Peete of Unadilla. He was the grandfather of Jeff and Holly Kimble, Kristi and Dan Holtz, Dan McConnelee and Linda McConnelee. Howard is also survived by five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private interment will be in Memorys Garden.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Lisha's Kill Reformed Church, 2131 Central Ave., Colonie. A reception will follow the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lisha's Kill Reformed Church or the American Diabetes Association in memory of Mr. Byam.

Elsie Brockner

ONEONTA — Elsie Brockner, 89, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born on April 6, 1913, in Ridgewood, the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Burkhardt) Wasmus.

She married Charles P. Brockner on June 27, 1931. He died on March 11, 1982.

Elsie was a licensed practical nurse and worked in various hospitals and nursing homes in New York City.

A local resident since 1973, moving here from Richmond Hills, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta, as well as being a member of the Center City Senior Citizens and the Italian American Club.

She is survived by her sons, Charles P. Brockner Jr. of Commack, Howard A. Brockner of Climax, and Frederick J. Brockner of Morris; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Arthur Brockner.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral and committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Michael J. Fennell

PITTSFORD — Michael J. Fennell, formerly of Fairport, entered into eternal rest after a courageous battle with non-smokers' lung cancer, May 15, 2002.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Erin (Gallagher); three children, Ryan, Kaelan and Meghan; parents, Joseph Fennell and Norma Fennell; sister, Pamela (Bruce) Baker; brother, Tim (Judy Mayne) Fennell; nieces and nephews, Matt and Maggie Fennell and E.J., Julia and Kate Baker; as well a multitude of supportive friends.

A graduate of Fairport High School and LeMoyne College, Mike played eight years with the New York Yankees Organization. Mike was the McQuaid varsity baseball coach.

Friends are welcome to call at the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home, Egypt location, 7501 Pittsford-Palmyra Road, Fairport, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 150 Varinna Drive, Rochester (Brighton). Private entombment will be at  White Haven Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Fennell Children Fund, care of Pamela Baker, 500 Allen Creek Rd., Rochester, NY 14618.

Stephen L. Foline

ONEONTA — Stephen L. Foline, 48, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his residence unexpectedly.

He was born June 27, 1953, in Patterson, N.J., the son of Louis and Pauline (Rountree) Foline.

He was never married.

Mr. Foline was a former chef in New York City, and most recently worked at Hummels and the Red Apple in Oneonta.

He has been a resident of Oneonta for the past 12 years.

He is survived by his mother, Pauline Normandia, of Ocala, Fla.; his father, Louis Foline of Warwick; a brother, David Foline of Florida, N.Y.; and a friend, Lee Mathieu of Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Gloria Y. Cotten

MILFORD — Graveside inurnment for Gloria Y. Cotten, 1930-1996, will be held at the Milford Cemetery in Milford, at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 20, 2002, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski officiating.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend by request of the family.

Samuel J. Lutz

ROXBURY — A service to celebrate the life of Samuel J. (Jack) Lutz, 72, who passed away on Jan. 22, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the J. Gould Reformed Church in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Margaret Stafford

MORRIS — Committal services for Mrs. Stafford, 86, who died Jan. 20, 2002, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Stafford family plot in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Emma S. Chase

COOPERSTOWN — Committal services for Mrs. Emma S. Chase, who died Dec. 13, 2001, will be held on Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Hartwick Cemetery in Hartwick at 2 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Pearl E. Higgins

ONTARIO — Mrs. Pearl Elizabeth Renwick Higgins, 83, of Brown Square in Ontario, N.Y., and formerly of Toddsville, Mount Vision and Altoona, Fla., passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, May 16, 2002, at her son's home in Ontario surrounded by her loved ones.

Pearl was born on Feb. 24, 1919, in Middlefield, at her family's Beaver Meadow Homestead, the sixth of eight surviving children, of Charles Fowler and Susie Ann (Thayer) Renwick.

She married Reginald F. Higgins on Oct. 5, 1941, in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Mr. Higgins died on Dec. 18, 1994.

Raised in Cooperstown, Pearl graduated from the Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1937.

She and her husband started a mobile door-to-door grocery business that later expanded into the Higgins Grocery Store in Toddsville, which they owned and operated from 1946 until 1971. She was later employed at Michaels' Meat Market, Hill's Farm and Home Store and as a tour guide at The Farmers' Museum until retiring with her husband to Altoona, Fla., while still maintaining a residence in Mount Vision. In 1999, she became a resident of Brown Square in Ontario, in order to be near her son and family.

A devoted Christian who had great strength of character and a loving heart, Pearl attended The First Baptist Church either in Toddsville, Altoona or Ontario. Her family and the many friends she made over the years will dearly miss her.

Pearl is survived by her son, Reginald P. Higgins II and his wife, Daughn, of Ontario, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Marjorie Odle and her husband, Michael, and Michelle Higgins; one grandson, Reginald P. Higgins III; eight great-grandchildren, Kelly, Jessica, Scott, Jamie, David, Jennell, Lisa and Jacob; one brother, Charles Renwick, and his wife, Norma; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Renwick, Mildred Renwick and Alma Higgins; one brother-in-law, Gerald Higgins, and his wife, Margaret; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Dorothy LaGasse, Winnie Anderson and Katie Scheiderer.

She was predeceased by her brothers, James, Homer, Walter, Roland, Robert and infant twins; and her sister, Lydia.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, at The First Baptist Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Pearl's family will be in attendance.

At the request of Pearl and her family, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The National Childhood Cancer Foundation (The Foundation for the Children's Oncology Group), 440 E. Huntington Dr., Suite 402, Arcadia, CA 91006, or The Pines of Peace, P.O. Box 238, Ontario, NY 14519.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Sharon Lee Wells

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Sharon Lee Wells, 48, of state Highway 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2002, in her home after a long illness.

She was born on Sept. 17, 1953, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Romaine A. and Florence Phillips Wells.

Sharon was raised in East Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School.

For many years she worked as a paralegal for various law firms throughout the area, most notably William Calli, attorney at law, in Utica.

To all that knew her they witnessed an adventuresome spirit and a zest for life itself. In more recent years she drove tractor-trailer for Swift Transportation Co. She traveled the entire United States and parts of Canada. While on the road, she visited every National Football League stadium in this country. She retired in 1996.

A Springfield Center resident since 1986 coming from Herkimer, her leisure time was spent riding motorcycle with her life mate, Raymond Charles Guyer. They traveled from coast to coast.

Sharon will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person. She will be greatly missed by many.

Surviving her are her life mate of 16 years, Ray, of Springfield Center; her extended family, Ashley Sikkema of Springfield Center, Samantha Augur of Cooperstown, Donna Countryman of Fort Plain, Cathy Tabor of Cobleskill and Dayle Evans of Springfield Center; her best friend, Beth Gregory of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; her loyal friends Boots and Tigger; several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous relatives throughout the Mohawk Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, at 40 West James St. in Richfield Springs. The Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Richfield Springs, will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA, Cooperstown, NY. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Daniel A. Slover

WARNERVILLE — Daniel A. Slover, 89, of Mineral Springs Road, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

Mr. Slover was born Aug. 6, 1912, in Scotia, the son of Walter L. And Maude (Ryer) Slover.

He was a 1935 graduate of Scotia High School. Mr. Slover owned and operated D&D Supply, Redi Mix And Trucking in Cooperstown from 1940 to 1968, when he sold the business. He then moved to Tucson, Ariz., and was a truck driver for ONC until retiring in 1984, when he moved to Warnerville.

Mr. Slover was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cobleskill and the Schoharie County Senior Center. He was a 32 degree Mason of the Blue Lodge Chapter, a member of the Commandery, Knights Templars 57-58, Ziyara Temple of Utica and the Lions Club of Cooperstown.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Benedict) Slover, who died July 1, 1976; his second wife, Gladys Watson; and a sister, Oretta (Slover) Brault.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Lou Bobnick of Cooperstown and Dottie and Roger Smith of Warnerville; a son, Harold Slover of Fairfax, Va.; sister, Nellie Mae Coulson of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Michael, Dan and John Bobnick, Roger, Russell and Megen Slover and Kathy, Dan and David Slover; and five great-grandchildren, David, Robby, Jacob, Lucas and Lindsay Slover.

A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, at 171 Elm St. in Cobleskill.

Friends may call from 6:30 to 7.30 p.m., one hour before the service.

Burial will be private at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396.

Gloria Y. Cotten

MILFORD — Graveside inurnment for Gloria Y. Cotten, 1930-1996, will be held at the Milford Cemetery in Milford at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski officiating.
