COLORADO SPRINGS,  Colo. — There will be a committal service for Harry S. Ward, 89, formerly of Oneonta, who died May 11, 2002, in Colorado Springs,  Colo., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, at St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

The family will be attending. Burial will be private in the Page Cemetery in Downsville.

Priscilla Palmeter

ONEONTA — A committal service for Priscilla L. Palmeter, who died on Jan. 10, 2002, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, in the St. Lawrence Corners Cemetery in Clayton.

Charles F. Mang

COLUMBIA — A graveside committal service for Charles F. Mang, age 78, beloved husband of Esther Eaker Mang, town of Columbia, who passed away on Dec. 20, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, in the Dolgeville Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph Jansen, pastor of the New Life Church and Ministry, Herkimer, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Leland Smith

WARREN — A graveside committal service for Leland Smith, age 76, beloved husband of Gladys E. Tooley Smith, town of Warren, who passed away on Dec. 11, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas Burliegh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Katherine Magnus

SEMINOLE, Fla. — A graveside committal service for Katherine Marion Magnus, age 88, of Seminole, Fla., who died on Feb. 27, 2002, in Seminole will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Springfield Center Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Theresa Rudnitski

OXFORD — Graveside committal services for Mrs. Theresa Mae Rudnitski, who died March 25, 2002, at Oxford, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2002, in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Elizabeth F. Hull

ONEONTA — Graveside committal services for Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" F. Hull, who died Feb. 20, 2002, in Oneonta, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Andella L. Tripp

SOUTH VALLEY — Committal services for Mrs. Andella L. Tripp, 85, who passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary Pernat

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Mary Pernat, 87, of Fly Creek Valley, died Tuesday evening, May 21, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Mary was born on Dec. 7, 1914, in Davis, W.Va., a daughter of Anton and Agnes (Sernel) Oblak.

She married Felix Pernat on Aug. 27, 1938, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Pernat died on May 1, 1995.

As a young child, Mary and her family moved from  West Virginia to  Pennsylvania, where she attended school. The family later moved to New York state, settling in Burlington Flats, where they started farming.

For many years she and her husband owned and operated a family farm in Fly Creek Valley. Until her death, she continued to reside there and was actively involved in its operation. She truly loved working on the farm and keeping diaries of daily events.

Mary was a member of St. Mary's `Our Lady of the Lake' Catholic Church in Cooperstown and the Fly Creek Historical Society.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Patti Pernat of Fly Creek Valley; two daughters, Shirley McCaffrey of Highland and Jean Eldred of West Sand Lake; seven grandchildren, Matthew Pernat and his wife, Ellen, of Fly Creek, Mark Pernat and his wife, Deborah of Greenwich, Bryan Pernat and Julie Pernat, both of Fly Creek, Debra Ramsay and her husband, Craig, of New Paltz, Michael McCaffrey of Highland and Marcy Eldred of West Sand Lake; three great-granddaughters, McKenna George and Emily and Elizabeth Ramsay; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Agnes Reed of Walton, Mollie and Edward Kirn of Cooperstown, and Julia and Gerald Bruce, and Dorothy Kelly, all of Burlington Flats; one brother and sister-in-law, Louis A. Oblak and his wife, Columbine (Tootie), of Burlington Flats; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers; one son-in-law, Joseph McCaffrey; and two brothers-in-law, William Reed and Charles Kelly.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, at St. Mary's `Our Lady of the Lake' Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown when Mary's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 41, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Marie Woznick

BLOOMVILLE — Marie Woznick, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, died unexpectedly at her home in Bloomville on May 22, 2002.

We do not mourn the loss, but celebrate her life. Her heart was filled with warmth and love, giving generously to all without second thoughts. Marie's smile would welcome a conversation with a beloved friend or even a complete stranger.

She was born July 5, 1932, in Lakeview, Long Island, the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Hurley) McGowan.

She shared her life with John Woznick for 48 years. Together they were blessed with five children, David Woznick, Margaret Coager and Patricia Woznick of Bloomville, Mary Ann Owens of Syracuse, and Kathy Tompkins of  Jackson Hole, Wyo. Her sister, Mary Lou Deacy, of Port  Jefferson also survives Marie.

Marie will continue her journey in a new place now. She will be missed deeply.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bloomville Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 784, Bloomville, NY 13739.

Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Bloomville Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Porto officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Mildred M. Monroe

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mildred May Monroe, 86, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine.

She was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Horseheads, the daughter of Jesse and Willomenia (Pock) Spargo.

On April 21, 1935, she married Roy Monroe in Portlandville. He survives.

She was a homemaker in East Springfield for approximately 50 years.

She was a member of the Springfield Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid.

Survivors besides her husband, Roy Monroe, of East Springfield; include a son, Edward Burke Monroe; a daughter, Yvonne Hoyer; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leona Spargo, Helen Spargo, E. Nina; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, in the Springfield Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Susan Burdsall officiating. Burial will follow.

Contributions in Mrs. Monroe's memory may be made to the East Springfield Fire Department, East Springfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Laura B. Evans

NORTHUMBERLAND — Laura B. (Johnson) Winkler Evans of Northumberland, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

She was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Middlefield.

She was a retired bookkeeper for the New York State Civil Service Department in Albany.

She enjoyed bowling, ceramics and playing cards.

She was the daughter of the late Percy and Lena Gage Johnson.

She is survived by her three children, Phyllis Winkler, Jean DiGirolamo (Louis) and Kenneth Winkler Sr. (Cindy); 10 grandchildren, Ronald and Michelle Genre, Mark and Scott Fitzgerald, April Hillier, Chastidy Baker and Michele, Connie, Kenneth Jr. and Amy Winkler; and nine great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, June Rowley, Glen Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Gary Johnson, Theodore Johnson, Pricilla Aviza and Vivian Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Calvin Johnson.

Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Wilton Funeral Home, at 395 Ballard Road in Wilton.

Interment is scheduled at a later date at the Gansevoort Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, at Wilton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, her family request donations be made in her name to the Diabetes Association or the Saratoga County Association for the Blind.

Douglas Faulkner

NEW KINGSTON — Douglas A. Faulkner, 77, of New Kingston, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Sept. 12, 1924, in New Kingston, the son of Ralph O. and Helen Ruff Faulkner. Doug spent his childhood on the family farm in New Kingston where he attended district school. He graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1941.

Doug enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1942, serving his country in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1945.

He later became a member of American Legion Post 216 in Margaretville.

Doug married Frances Annette Mayhew on Sept. 10, 1949, in Tenafly, N.J.

He was employed by Myron J. Faulkner at the New Kingston General Store and was appointed postmaster of New Kingston in 1948. He purchased the store business in 1950, operating it until his retirement in 1979.

An entrepreneur, Doug's business enterprises included partnerships in a logging business and Laundromat. In addition, he worked in the excavating and real estate fields.

Doug and his wife were avid antiquers, traveling throughout the country adding to their extensive collections.

In 2001, they were recognized for their donation of New York state stoneware to The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown.

His other interests included woodcarving, gardening, pitching horseshoes, bowling, hunting and golfing. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman who enjoyed spending countless hours in the mountains he loved.

Doug was active in the community, serving on the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Board, M-ARK Board, Town of Middletown Planning Board, and as a Middletown-Hardenburgh Fire District commissioner.

Surviving are his wife, Fran; daughter, June Faulkner of Rhinebeck; son, Lee Faulkner, and fiancee, Adele Fuller, of Audubon, Pa.; son, Glen, and wife, Elaine Faulkner, of New Kingston; and grandchildren, Brian and Erica Faulkner and Calli Schroeck.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the New Kingston Presbyterian Church.

Donations in his memory may be made to: Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi; Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1075 Santa Fe Dr., Denver  Colo. 80204; or Humane Society of Central Delaware County, P.O. Box 88, Delhi.

Gerald A. Place

LAURENS — Gerald "Jelly" A. Place, a quiet, gentle and loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.

He was predeceased by his parents, Merton and Leona Place of Laurens; a grandson, Thomas M. Place, in 2000; and his sister, Beatrice Rose, in 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Place, of Laurens; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Loretta Place of Oneonta; two grandsons, Mark Place of Oneonta (attending graduate school at State University at Albany) and Sgt. Craig Place, serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Missouri; his sister's son and his wife, Doug and Carolyn Rose of Oneonta; and his sister's daughter, Rena Rose of Laurens. He also has several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Gerald was a World War II veteran; he served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. He re-enlisted in 1950-1952. After serving in the Army, he came home and helped run his father's farm.

Gerald was also a U.S. postal carrier.

He loved the outdoors, and upon retiring from the post office, he spent a lot of his time puttering around the house.

If you couldn't find him there, then you would look to the nearest golf course. He was an avid golfer (playing at least five days a week) and extremely proud of his "Hole in 1" at Woodhaven Golf Course.

He will be dearly missed by his family and all his friends.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Laurens Cemetery in Laurens, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New Berlin, officiating. Laurens American Legion will accord military honors at the cemetery.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in his name, be sent to Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens, NY 13796.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
