David L. Hoy

PORT RICHEY, Fla. — David L. Hoy, 78, of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Sidney, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002, after losing his battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 26, 1923, the son of Percy and Evelyn (Doyle) Hoy.

He was predeceased by both of his parents; his first wife, Jean (Cole); brother, Herbert Hoy; and his sister, Aliene Constable.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Port Richey, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Marie Loomis of Poquoson, Va., and Gary and Kathy Hoy of Bainbridge, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and William Evans of Norwich, N.Y., and Andrea and Scott Keaty of Endicott, N.Y.; two stepsons, John and Brian Marek; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Hoy of New Port Richey, Fla., and Theo Christianson of Vermont; and brother-in-law, Leonard and Janice Cole of Binghamton, N.Y. David is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was a superintendent for William H. Lane Inc. of Binghamton, and a member of the Hudson Valley Carpenter's Union Local 258. David also belonged to the VFW and American Legion Post, was member of the Moose Club and was a life-time member of the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate David's life at the Sidney Center Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for any donations to be made in David's name to the Hernando Pasco Hospice, 12029 Majestic Blvd., Suite 1, Hudson, Fla. 34667 or to a charity of your choice.

Local arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y.

Mary Brigham

ONEONTA — Mary Anne Brigham, 57, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday evening, May 21, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Born in New Berlin, Mary Anne grew up in the Oneonta area and attended their local schools.

While living in Oneonta, she had been employed by the Robynwood Adult Home and The Meadows Nursing Home in Cooperstown, as a nurse's aide, until she became disabled.

Born Aug. 12, 1944, in New Berlin, Mary Anne was the daughter of Loyal and Mary (Ahlstrom) Shoemaker.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Shoemaker of Oneonta; and her children, Laurie Brigham of Harpursville, Karen Brigham Bruce of Davenport, Eddie Brigham of Cooperstown and Jackie Brigham of Oneonta; her husband, Lester A. Brigham Jr. of South Kortright; one sister, Geraldine Shoemaker of North Carolina; and one brother, Loyal Shoemaker Jr. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Bonnie Shoemaker of Oneonta; her best friend, Eleanor Monroe of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father, Loyal Shoemaker; and her brother, Louis E. Shoemaker.

Funeral services for Mary Anne will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Gary Doupe, pastor of the Centenary Chenango Street United Methodist Church of Binghamton, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery of Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Robert J. Donohue

DAVENPORT — Robert J. Donohue, 72, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 11, 1929, in the Bronx, the son of John and Viola (Heckman) Donohue.

He married Marie I. Brennan on Oct. 10, 1953, in Brooklyn.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.

Bob has been an area resident since 1972.

For a number of years he has been in the optical business, and most recently was associated with Minuteman Optical. Before that he worked for Oneonta Public Transit.

While living in the New York City area, he worked for United States Lines.

He is survived by his wife, Marie T. Donohue, of Davenport; two sons, Brian J. and Michael J. Donohue of Connecticut; and a grandson, Shane A. Donohue of Connecticut.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, May 25, 2002, from the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Burns, pastor of Holy Cross Church in Morris, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, this evening, at the funeral home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Laura B. Evans

NORTHUMBERLAND — Laura B. (Johnson) Winkler Evans of Northumberland, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

She was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Middlefield.

She was a retired bookkeeper for the New York State Civil Service Department in Albany.

She enjoyed bowling, ceramics and playing cards.

She was the daughter of the late Percy and Lena Gage Johnson.

She is survived by her three children, Phyllis Winkler, Jean DiGirolamo (Louis) and Kenneth Winkler Sr. (Cindy); 10 grandchildren, Ronald and Michelle Genre, Mark and Scott Fitzgerald, April Hillier, Chastidy Baker and Michele, Connie, Kenneth Jr. and Amy Winkler; and nine great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sisters and brothers, June Rowley, Glen Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Gary Johnson, Theodore Johnson, Pricilla Aviza and Vivian Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Calvin Johnson.

Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Wilton Funeral Home, at 395 Ballard Road in Wilton.

Interment is scheduled at a later date at the Gansevoort Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002, at Wilton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, her family request donations be made in her name to the Diabetes Association or the Saratoga County Association for the Blind.

H.R. `Bob' Wenck

ONEONTA — H.R. "Bob" Wenck, 77, of Oneonta passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1924, in Oneonta the son of William F. and Mary Jane (Shepard) Wenck.

He served as a torpedo-man's mate 3rd class in the United States Navy during World War II.

For 37 years, Bob served as a city of Oneonta police officer, and held the honor of wearing badge No. 1, which was retired with him in 1982.

He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association and the NRA.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman and took great pleasure in gardening. He was very proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed the special times spent with them. He will be sorely missed by his buddies at the Neptune Diner, where they had their morning coffee klastch.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Martha and Gary Sandike of Oneonta, David and Kathleen Wenck of East Meredith, Daniel and Lisa Wenck of Fly Creek, and Mary Foy of Amsterdam; his eight grandchildren, Melinda Graves of Oneonta, Jeffrey Graves of Selkirk, Christopher and Colin Wenck of Fly Creek, Stephanie and Anemarie Wenck of East Meredith, and Lucas and Meghan Foy of Amsterdam; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Wenck) and Linus Houck of Oneonta, and a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Madeline Wenck of Otego.

He was predeceased by six sisters and three brothers, including fellow police officer, Paul Wenck.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert F. Haskell of St. James' Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday evening, May 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund or the Oneonta PBA.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Arthur E. Neeves

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Arthur E. Neeves Jr., age 82, of Millstone Road, passed away on peacefully on Thursday afternoon May 23, 2002, in his home after a long illness.

He was born on Sept. 13, 1919, in Westport, Conn., son of the late Arthur E. Sr. and Anka Angell Neeves. Arthur was raised in Silver Lake, graduated from  White Plains High School and had attended New York University.

An honorably discharged United States Air Force veteran, he served our country during World War II. On May 8, 1954, he married Marcella Myer in Milford, Pa.

Mr. Neeves life was devoted to aviation. He was a self-employed flight instructor and was the fixed base operator at the Mahopac Airport in Putnam County. In 1987 he and his wife moved to Richfield Springs, where he still maintained his interests in flying.

He had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Richfield Springs Bible Church. He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family.

Surviving besides his wife of 48 years Marcella; are four sons and their wives, Brian and Carol Neeves of Sioux Falls, S.D., Arthur and Catherine Neeves of Ipswich, U.K., Walter and Patricia Neeves of Reddington, Conn., Peter and Brenda Neeves of Syracuse; one sister, Melba Bradford of  White Plains; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Neeves, on Feb. 10, 1999.

Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Richfield Springs Bible Church with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Neeves will be laid to rest in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, at a time convenient to the family.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 3 until 6 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Bible Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Odell Williams

UNADILLA — Odell (Pops) Williams, 88, of Unadilla, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Grassland, N.J., to William and Little Mae (Rasberry) Williams.

He married Daria Simpson on July 31, 2001, in Franklin, N.Y.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II.

He was a dairy farmer and a former general contractor in the New York City area.

Mr. Williams was a 34-year resident of the Treadwell area.

He is survived by his wife, Daria, at home; 10 children, Linda DeSilva, Greg, Tyrone, Perry, Gail, Eric, and Odell Jr., all of New York City, Jeffrey of Chicago, Michelle of Virginia, and Michael Williams, of Norwich; several grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, two hours before the service.

Burial will follow in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Viva M. Chase

NEW BERLIN — Viva M. Chase, 87, of New Berlin, died May 23, 2002, in Norwich.

She was born March 27, 1915, in Sidney Center, to Jay and Bertha (Ackley) Furgason. She spent her childhood in Sidney Center.

She married Elmer A. Chase on March 27, 1932. He died Nov. 8, 1999.

Viva was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin and the Pittsfield Homemakers and Mothers Club.

She is survived by a son, Roger Chase, of New Berlin; and cousins Ena Carvin of Rogers Hollow and Beaula Prindle of New Berlin.

Funeral services for Viva will be Sunday, May 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin. The Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin will officiate.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin.
