Albert J. VanDyke

SIDNEY — Albert J. VanDyke, 72, of Hubbells Corners, died Thursday, May 30, at home in the company of his family.

Albert was born Dec. 19, 1929, on Ferris Hill, Grand Gorge, the son of Adelbert and Evelyn (Mondore) Van Dyke. A lifelong area resident, he married Effie Brisbane on Oct. 15, 1961.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years; children, Diane and Michael Hoxie of South New Berlin, Albert VanDyke and Lisa Hoyt of Laurens, Allan VanDyke of Roxbury and Alberta VanDyke of Grand Gorge; stepsons and daughters, Arlene and Raymond Wood of Sidney, Joseph and Barbara Baker of Sidney Center and Gerald E. Baker; two sisters, Pearl Thomas of Schenectady and Betty Hunter of Stamford; and a brother Adelbert VanDyke Jr. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Althea Joy VanDyke; a stepdaughter, Joyce Ann Smith; a brother Thomas VanDyke; and three sisters, Gladys Williamen, Minnie Ryder and Gertrude Dauley.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 3, at 1 p.m. at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will follow in the Margaretville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday when the family will be in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials to Catskill Area Hospice in the name of Albert J. VanDyke are appreciated.

Gilbert B. Thomson

UNADILLA — Gilbert B. "Gibby" Thomson, 70, formerly of Schenevus, died unexpectedly, Thursday, May 30, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Watertown, N.Y., the son of Ivan and Kathleen (Briggs) Thomson.

Gibby was employed at Hannaford Food and Drug Superstore in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alice (Dubben) Thomson of Unadilla; a son, Thomas Thomson of Sidney; and a sister, Beverly Polczak of Mexico, N.Y.

Calling hours will be held Friday, June 7, from noon until the memorial service time at 1 p.m., at Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St. in Schenevus, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Gibby to the charity of ones choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St. in Schenevus.

Amisa Gunther

ONEONTA — Amisa Pamala Pope Gunther, the infant baby daughter of Ralph J. Pope and Jeanette Gunther, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. She was born Wednesday, May 29, 2002.

She is survived by her parents, Jeanette Gunther and Ralph J. Pope of Oneonta; her sisters and brothers, Katrina, Anthony and Sean Gunther of Oneonta and Re-Shawn Marshall of Mount Vernon; her maternal grandparents, Gary and Judy Sprague of Hartwick; her paternal grandparents, Linwood and Pamala Pope of Mount Vernon; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., with the Rev. Phillip Sell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hartwick, officiating.

Friends may call on Wednesday, from 1 p.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta.

James A. Kenyon

WALTON — James A. "Jim" Kenyon, 53, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2002, at his residence in Walton.

The son of Richard A. and Frances (Martin) Kenyon, he was born June 27, 1948, in Delhi, was a 1966 graduate of South Kortright Central School and, later, Royal Barber School in Schenectady.

Because of poor eyesight, Jim was unable to practice barbering, but, until his health declined, worked on dairy farms in the Bloomville area where he spent most of his life.

A 12-year Walton resident, Jim will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving are a daughter, Michelle and Dom Pucci of Oneonta; a son, Nathanael J. Kenyon of Stamford, Conn.; a granddaughter, Alexandra; his parents, Richard A. and Frances Kenyon of Kortright; two sisters, Linda and Larry Soule of Bloomville and Margaret and Dale Goodrich of Richfield Springs; a brother, Richard M. and Margaret Kenyon of Kortright; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The Rev. Steven Y. Kim will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Bloomville Methodist Church, where Jim was a member, and burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blind Work Association, 55  Washington St., Binghamton, NY 13901.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son in Delhi.

Kenneth Peer

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Kenneth "Ken" Peer, 67, of Dunham Cross Road in South New Berlin, passed away early Sunday morning, June 2, 2002, at his home.

Born March 11, 1935, in Landing, N.J., Ken was the son of Burton and Nancy (Molson) Peer.

He grew up in the Sussex County area of New Jersey and attended the Roxbury Township school.

On Feb. 28, 1959, in Hackettstown, N.J., he married Alice DeGroat Peer. Ken and his wife, Alice, lived and worked in New Jersey until 1977, when they moved to New York.

Known to friends as the person to go to if they needed anything, Ken was always there to help when needed, a true father and friend. He dedicated his life to raising his family and to others.

Ken was self-employed as a heavy equipment operator in New Jersey and New York, along with having many other talents.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping, and his children playing outdoors. He provided well for his family and friends, always thinking of everyone else first.

He struggled with diabetes for many years.

Beside his wife, Alice Peer, Ken is survived by his daughters, Donna Delameter and husband, Danny, of New Port Ritchey, Fla., Deborah Stacy of Sidney, Dawn Murray and husband, Noral (Pat), of South New Berlin, and Dolores Hulburt and her companion, Fred Barse, of Sidney; by his foster-children, Tina DeGroat of Portlandville, Leroy Bates and his companion, Nina Stieger, of South New Berlin, Kelly (Brandy) and family of Kentucky, Thomas and Philamina Bates of Norwich, and Tracy and Sam DeForest of Flemmington, N.J. Also surviving are Ken's grandchildren, Danielle, Dustin, Billy and wife, Tracy, Bruno, Tim Cox, Shane, Quinton, Ryan, Nate, Natosia, Renee, Kenny, Nickie and Dakota; a great-grandson, Kausher  Jackson Bruno; and his foster grandchildren, Brian, Clayton, Angel, Krissy, Brandon, Veronica, Stephanie, Skylene Liberty, and Heaven Rose. Ken is survived by his sisters, Joyce Carper and husband, Charles, of Ocala, Fla., and Betty Pirrone of Buffalo; and his brother, Burton Peer and wife, Viola, of Stockholm, N.J.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, Burton and Nancy Peer; his son, Kenneth Peer, on Dec. 24, 1961; his daughter, Diane Peer, on Aug. 10, 1989; his brother, Albert Peer; and sisters, Lillian VanHouton and Fannie Hoy.

Memorial services for Ken will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, from the Church of Christ on Route 8 in South New Berlin. There will also be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on June 18, 2002.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, New York State Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, Conn. 06150-1160; or to the Gilbertsville Fire Co., Gilbertsville, NY.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Howard Fairbairn

MARGARETVILLE — Howard J. Fairbairn, 88, of Margaretville, passed away Friday, May 31, 2002, at his residence on Southside Road in Margaretville.

He was born June 7, 1913, in Belleayre, the son of Benjamin H. and Bessie (Freer) Fairbairn.

His first marriage was to Dorothy VanValkenburg on Oct. 14, 1933, in Bovina Center. She died May 27, 1990. His second marriage was to Barbara DeLong Squires on Dec. 28, 1991, in Margaretville.

He graduated in 1932 from Margaretville Central School.

He was president of the Fairbairn Lumber Co. in Margaretville, retiring in 1989.

During World War II he worked in the toolroom at Scintilla in Sidney.

He was a lifelong area resident.

He attended the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville.

He has been an active member of the Old Stone Schoolhouse in Dunraven, where he served as a young superintendent.

Howard has been an avid bowler and had bowled in two leagues until last year. He enjoyed fishing, traveling with friends on fishing trips to Canada.

He spent winters in Arizona and Florida, where he owned homes with his first wife, Dorothy. Dorothy was assisted by Howard in her antique business known as Liberty Bell Antiques in Margaretville. Woodworking was one of Howards favorite hobbies.

Howard is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Fairbairn of Margaretville; one son, Richard Fairbairn of Margaretville; one daughter, Carolyn DeSilva of Digsboro, Del.; two sisters, Evelyn Norton of New Mexico, and Eloise Elliott of Vero Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Kevin DeSilva and wife, Carol, of Oneonta, Debra Gransbury and husband, John, of Virginia Beach, Va., Rowan and husband, Sergio, Bais of Italy, Regan Fairbairn of Louisville, Ky., Christopher Fairbairn of Fleischmanns; great-grandchildren, Michele, Ryan, Adam Nicholas and Desiree; three stepsons, Dennis, Bruce and Daron Squires; six stepgrandchildren; special friend Karen Archibald; special grandfather to many other children; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Donald Fairbairn; and one sister, Elva Traver.

Graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Margaretville Cemetery in Margaretville with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions in memory of Howard J. Fairbairn may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY or the Old Stone Schoolhouse.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Albert J. VanDyke

Anne Marie Wilson

SCOTIA — Anne Marie Donnelly Wilson, 62, of Habel Lane in Scotia passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady, after a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 27, 1939, in Cooperstown.

She received a bachelor's degree in education from the Oneonta State Teachers College. She taught second grade at the Charlton Heights Elementary School. She taught second and third grades locally for 36 years.

She enjoyed swimming during the summer months.

She married her beloved husband, Edward M. Wilson, on Aug. 29, 1980.

She is survived by her husband, Edward M. Wilson; three brothers, James Donnelly of Schuyler Lake, William Donnelly of Schuyler Lake, and Edwin Donnelly of Little Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, William Donnelly and Mary Kraham Donnelly.

A funeral service will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002, from the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road., followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 50, Glenville. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Sweetman Cemetery, Charlton.
