Marie Kobuszewski

ONEONTA — Marie Carolyn (Ross) Kobuszewski, a lifelong Oneontan, who was loved by many, died on Sunday, June 2, 2002, at 4:45 p.m. in her home.

She was born March 31, 1941, the daughter of Milo J. and Mary E. (Scott) Ross.

She was predeceased by her father in 1992; her sister, Donna L. Nolan of Syracuse in August 1994; and her mother in 2000.

Marie touched the lives of many people through the years. Her smile was infectious, and she lived her life as if she never encountered a stranger, only a friend whom she hadn't met yet.

The following quote best describes her philosophy of life: "Don't walk ahead of me, I may not follow; don't walk behind me, I may not lead; just walk beside me and be my friend."

Marie graduated from Oneonta High School in 1958. She attended Broome Community College before beginning a job with General Electric in Syracuse for a short time.

She entered the State University system in an administrative position in Cortland before returning to Oneonta for a position in the student affairs office at the State University College at Oneonta. Perhaps the one thing she enjoyed the most in this position was interacting with dorm directors and resident assistants while helping them administer their responsibilities. She retired from there in 1996 after 31 years of loyal service.

Upon retiring, Marie and her husband, Fred, began spending winters at the Deer Creek golfing community near Orlando, Fla. While there she became an avid golfer playing almost daily. She celebrated a hole in one last season. Marie would often stop to speak to the baby alligator that had found a home near the 15th green.

Marie was an active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, where she was a Eucharistic minister, St. Mary's Rosary Society, the Oneonta Business Women's Club and the Golden Alumni Association of SUCO.

She volunteered at Saturday's Bread and, besides golf, enjoyed cross country skiing, gardening, racquetball and reciting her mother's limericks.

She is survived by Fred John Kobuszewski, her husband of 37 years; two sons, Michael John and Laura (Sykora) Kobuszewski of Parma, Ohio, and David James and Shani (Bultemeier) Kobuszewski of Charlotte, N.C. She also leaves three grandchildren, Kaitlin and Andrew Kobuszewski of Parma, Ohio, and the soon-to-be-born, William John Kobuszewski of Charlotte, N.C.; three nieces, Laurie Grinnell, Christine Salanger and Kathy Fellion, all of Syracuse; an uncle, Lawrence Scott of Oneonta; and several cousins.

A service to celebrate her life with a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002, in St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
